Erik the Red
Erik the Red was a Viking. He was born in Norway, but he lived in Iceland. He sailed west and became the first European to visit Greenland. He told people that the land was beautiful and green, and convinced many people to sail there with him. Erik established two colonies on Greenland. He had four children: one girl and three boys. One of his sons, Leif, is famous for being the first European to discover America. In the year 1002, immigrants brought disease to the colonies and many people died, including Erik.

Desert life
Around one third of land on Earth is desert. Deserts are dry areas of land with very few plants and very little water. Most deserts are in hot regions of the world. In summer, the temperature is very high during the day, but in winter it can be freezing at night! Desert plants and animals have adapted to the extreme conditions. Cacti store water in their trunks, and have long roots to access underground water. Desert animals such as large lizards and snakes only need to eat once or twice a month. 1. There isn’t much water in the desert. 2. There aren’t any plants. 3. All deserts are very hot. 4. The temperature in the desert can be very low. 5. Cacti store water inside their trunks. 6. Claire’s dream holiday Last year, I went on holiday with my family to the most amazing place. When we landed at the airport, we looked out of the window and saw the tallest trees and the highest mountains. The weather was cooler than at home, but that was OK because I don't like really hot weather. When we arrived at our hotel I saw the swimming pool. It was bigger than the pool at my school! And the water was warmer! We all jumped in played for hours and hours. We did lots of really exciting things - some things were more dangerous than others. For example, one day I held a snake with the most venomous bite in the country! I wasn't scared, though, it was a friendly snake. And another day we went on the fastest roller coaster, I was a bit scared then, and so was my brother!

Charlie’s weird weekend It was the weekend and Charlie was at home doing nothing. He went to the window to see what the weather was like. What a surprise! It was raining. Charlie was fed up with everything and decided to go to his room. Charlie started walking up the stairs but he fell over and banged his head. When he opened his eyes, he realised he wasn’t in the house anymore! He was in a spaceship! ‘What happened?’ thought Charlie as he got up and looked around. ‘You’re in the future,’ said a strange voice behind him. Charlie turned around and saw a little green alien waving at him. ‘How did you hear me?’ said Charlie. ‘I only thought that, I didn’t say anything!’ The alien smiled. ‘Well, Charlie,’ it said, ‘This is the future and in the future everyone will be able to read people’s thoughts too.’

2 Read and complete. One day, after school, my friend Joe and I went skateboarding. Joe is brilliant at skateboarding and he said he would teach me too. We walked to the skate park. There were lots of children skating up and down huge ramps. I felt a little bit frightened but Joe said, ‘Don’t worry, Jane, you are going to be great at skateboarding!’. I wasn’t sure, though. ‘Before we start,’ Joe said, ‘Let me tell you about the park’s safety rules. You must always wear your helmet and pads. And you mustn’t skate barefoot.’ ‘OK,’ I said. ‘Why don't we start with something easy?’ I put on my helmet and pads and we went to the small ramp. I stood on my skateboard and Joe gave me some advice. ‘Just enjoy it. And try not to fall off!'. I did fall off. Many times. But it was not a problem because Joe said that’s how you learn. Now, I love skateboarding and Joe and I go to the skate park every Friday after school. Thanks, Joe!

1. Woman: So, Francesca, tell me about your best friend. Francesca: OK. Well, her name is Lucy and she’s from Australia. W: Australia? That’s nice. F: Yes, but she lives here now. W: And what does she look like? F: Well, she’s got long hair. W: And is her hair curly? F: Oh, no, it isn’t. She’s got straight hair. W: OK. Long, straight hair. Is her hair dark or fair? F: Oh, it’s fair. She has long, blond hair. 2 W: Where do you and Lucy hang out? F: Well, one time we went to the mountains. It was amazing. W: I love the mountains, too. F: Me too. And sometimes we go to the park if it’s sunny. W: But where do you usually hang out? F: Oh, well we usually meet at my house and hang out in my room. W: Ah, OK. 3 W: And when you hang out at your house, what do you eat and drink? F: Well, last Saturday it was Lucy’s birthday so we ate pizza. W: Mmmm, delicious! F: I know, but we don’t usually eat pizza. W: What do you usually eat and drink then? F: l Well, my mum makes really good chicken, and Lucy really loves it. So when she comes to my house we usually eat roast chicken and drink juice. W: That sounds delicious too. F: Yes, we always have it with chips too. W: Roast chicken and chips! Lovely. 4 W: Do you play games when you hang out? F: Yes, we do. We often play the same game. Guess which game we play? W: Mmmm, let me think. Do you play computer games? F: No, we don’t often play computer games, only if my brother is there. W: Well, do you play tennis in the garden? F: We do if the weather is nice but that’s not what we usually play. W: Errr. I don’t know… Do you play chess? F: Yes, we do! We often play chess because Lucy taught me how to play and I love it. W: Great! Chess is a great game. 2
Emily: Hello! We’re not at home at the moment! Please leave a message after the beep. Tom: Hi, Emily. It’s Tom. I hope you’re having a good day. I’m washing the dog because he’s really dirty. I’m washing him in the garage because it’s really cold outside. I’ve got lots of homework but I’m not doing it. It’s really boring! Anyway, I’m meeting Jack at 5 this afternoon. Do you want to come? I’m meeting him in the park. Call me if you are coming. My mobile phone number is six-zero-zero-three-nine-nine-four-seven-one. See you later! Bye! 3
1 Grandmother: Peter! How are you? How was your holiday? Peter: It was amazing Grandma. We saw lots of things. G: What did you see? P: Well, we went to a museum and saw a big ship and lots of old coins. G: Oh, that sounds interesting. Did you buy anything at the museum? P: Yes, I did. I bought a toy ship. Like the one we saw. G: Oh, can I see it? P: Of course.
2 Grandad: Hello, Karen! Welcome back! Did you enjoy your holiday? Karen: Oh, yes, Grandad. It was great! Gr: Why? What did you do? K: Oh, we did lots of things. We went sailing and we went camping. Gr: Wow! And what was your favourite thing? K: Definitely camping. I loved it. Gr: Really? K: Yeah. And look, I bought back a compass. Dad gave it to me. Gr: A compass? Aren’t you lucky! 3 Peter: Dad! Show Grandma and Grandad what you brought back. Dad: Why don’t we let them guess? P and K: Yes! Good idea! G: OK, mmmmm. Did you bring back some sweets? D: No, I didn’t. Guess again. Gr: But you love sweets! D: I know, but I ate too many during the holidays and I didn’t want to bring any back. G: OK then. Oh, I know! Did you bring back a map? D: Yes, I did. Well done. P: How did you guess, Grandma? Gr: Because he collects maps of all the places you visit! G: Yes! 4 Karen: Now guess what Mum brought back! Gr: OK, I think I know this one. Mum: Really? G: Ah yes, me too. You were looking at them when we arrived. Gr: Did you bring back some jewellery? M: Yes, I did! Karen and Peter bought it for me. Peter: We bought it in the market! M: And it’s very beautiful jewellery. G: That’s very kind of you both. 4
Mrs Turner: Hi, Mandy! What are you doing? Mandy: Hello, Mrs Turner. I’m finishing my picture. It’s a picture of the school trip yesterday. MT: Oh that’s nice. Are you going to colour it? M: OK! What should I colour first? MT: Let’s see. Well, can you see Suzie? M: Yes, she was sailing in the boat with Max. MT: Yes, and she was wearing a hat. Colour the hat purple. M: OK, I’m colouring her hat purple. MT: That looks great! And now, can you write something? M: Of course. What should I write? MT: Write… Explorers! M: OK. But where should I write it? MT: On the side of the boat, where Suzie and Max were sailing. M: OK, I’m writing it on the boat. Oh. Can you help me spell it? MT: Sure. E-X-P-L-O-R-E-R-S. M: Got it. Explorers. M: Can we draw something now? MT: OK. Let’s draw a ball. M: Excellent. MT: Let’s draw a ball next to the dog. M: Which dog? There were two. MT: The dog that was playing with Dan and Ben. M: OK, I’m drawing a ball next to the dog that was playing with the boys. MT: Where’s Simon? M Well, he wasn’t playing with the dog. So… Oh, there he is. He was playing his guitar. MT: Oh, yes. Lily: Hello, Richard. Richard: Hi, Lily. Look at this picture of Sports Day. I’m in it! L: Let me see. R: Look, there’s Peter before the race started. L: Which one is Peter, the boy wearing a hat? R: No. Peter is the tallest one, in the middle. L: Ah yes, he’s really tall, isn’t he? R: Yeah, he’s the tallest boy in our year. R: There’s Charlotte, sitting on the grass. L: There are two girls sitting on the grass. R: Oh, you’re right. Charlotte is the girl with long hair. L: They both have long hair! R: Sorry! Charlotte is the girl with the longest hair. L: OK, I see. Her hair is longer than the other girl’s. R: Yeah. L: And who is having their picture taken? R: Well, one of the boys I don’t know but the other is William. He won a trophy for football. L: Cool. Is he the boy with bare feet? R: No, he’s the shorter boy, next to the boy with bare feet. L: He looks very happy! L: Hey, there’s a girl with two trophies. What’s her name? R: That’s Andrea. She won trophies for running and swimming. L: Wow. R: Yes, she’s the fastest runner in our school. L: Is she in your class? R: No, she’s older than me. She’s in year 6.
L: Cool! I love running. S: I know. The Jamaican running team are going to be there. L: Really? S: Yes. They’re going to be answering people’s questions. L: That’s interesting. S: And, there’s a competition and the prize is that one fan gets to train with them for the day. L: That’s even better! One fan is going to be very happy. S: Definitely! So, are you going to get a ticket? L: Of course. Can you get them on the day? S: Yes, but they’re more expensive on the day. Buy them online in advance. It’s cheaper. L: Good idea. I’m so excited! S: Me too! 7
1 Mike: Where’s your Dad, Sally? Sally: Oh, he’s at work. M: At the hospital? S: No, my dad doesn’t work at the hospital. M: Oh, sorry. I thought he was a nurse. S: No, my mum’s a nurse but my dad’s a journalist. M: Oh yes, I remember you told me before. S: Yes. Today he’s interviewing a chef in a very expensive restaurant. M: Cool. 2 S: Did you do anything last night, Jonathan? Jonathan: Well, I wanted to go to the magic show but my mum couldn’t take me. S: Why? Was she busy? J: Yes, she had to go and buy groceries. S: Oh, no. Did you go with her? J: Yes, I did. S: That’s nice of you. J: Thanks, but to be honest, I really wanted to stay at home and go to sleep. I was really tired and it was boring! 3 Mum: So, what would you two like for lunch? S: I don’t know. Jonathan, you’re the guest, you should choose. J: OK, could I have a salad, please? M: A salad? Of course, you can. But what would you like with it? J: A cheese sandwich, please. M: OK. And you Sally? Do you want the same? S: Mmmmm, I’d like a salad but can I have a hamburger with it? M: No. We’re having hamburgers for dinner. Remember? S: Oh yes. Well, I’ll have the same then. M: OK. Two cheese sandwiches with salad. 8
L: And is that you, Richard? R: Yes, it is. I went on the Big Wheel. It was a bit scary. L: Why? R: Well, I don’t like heights. L: Who went on with you? R: Sarah. She loves the Big Wheel! L: So, she wasn’t scared. R: Not at all. She loved it!
Presenter: So, on today’s programme we will be finding out how different people spend their weekends. And to start, let’s say hello to Michelle. Michelle: Hello, everyone. P: So, Michelle, what did you do last weekend? M: Well, I’m a pilot so when I’m working I travel a lot. This means when I’m not working I love not doing anything. P: Really? So last weekend you stayed at home, on the sofa? M: That’s right. I did absolutely nothing and it was fantastic!

Susan: Hi Louise! Are you going to International Sports Day? Louise: I don't know. What's International Sports Day? S: It’s an amazing day! You can see lots of athletes from different countries and learn about sport. L: Wow! That sounds cool! Which athletes will be there? S: The most popular ones in the world from all different sports, like tennis or running.

P: And now, Ruth. What did you do last weekend? R: Well, I normally go hiking at the weekend because as a police officer I am always in the city, so when I have a free weekend I love going to the mountains. P: So, did you go there last weekend? R: No, I went surfing! It was my first time and I wasn’t very good but it was amazing! I can’t wait to go again!

Listening Transcripts P: And finally, over to you Bill. What did you do last weekend? B: Last weekend I went away. You see, I normally work at the weekends because the animals won’t take care of themselves. The cows still need milking even on a Sunday! P: I imagine! Working on a farm is hard work. B: That’s very true. But last weekend was a special weekend and I came to the city. It was fabulous. My wife and I walked all day and we went to a museum too. It was fascinating! 9
Anna: This is a great picture, James. James: Oh, thanks, Anna. We’re doing a project at school on life in the future. This picture is of an exhibition we saw at a museum. A: Cool. What do you think life will be like? J: Well, first of all, I think everyone will travel by spaceship. It will be amazing! A: Awesome! 10
Anna: So, who is in the picture, James? James: Some friends from school but also some people I don’t know. Let’s see. That’s Leanne. A: Who? The girl playing baseball? J: No, the girl looking out of the window. A: Oh, yes, she’s looking at Saturn. It’s beautiful. J: Yes, it would be wonderful to be able to see the planets that close. A: So, who’s the girl playing baseball? J: Oh, I don’t know her, but I know the boys. A: OK, who’s the boy wearing a baseball cap? J: Both boys are wearing baseball caps. A: Ah yes, sorry! The boy between the girl and the alien. What’s his name? J: That’s Jim. He’s my best friend. A: And the other boy? J: The boy who is sitting down looking at photos? A: No, the boy who is going to throw the ball. J: Ah, the other boy wearing a baseball cap. That’s Patrick. A: Patrick? J: Yes, he doesn’t go to my school now but he will next year. J: And you see this girl, the girl sitting down? A: Yes, what’s she doing? J: She’s looking at photos and learning about the customs on different planets. A: Good idea! That will be very important if we travel to different planets. J: Yes, she’s very clever. Her name’s Janet. A: And can she speak to aliens? J: No! In the future they will be able to speak English though! A: And James, did you meet the aliens from the picture? J: Yes, I did. Well, I met one; the one who is looking at the photos with Janet. A: What was his name? Something really strange I bet. J: No! His name’s Simon. A: Simon? J: Yes, he isn’t a real alien. He’s an actor who works at the museum! 11
Anna: Are you going to colour in the picture, James? James: OK. A: I’ll help you if you like. J: Great! OK, can you see the boy next to Leanne? A: Yes, he’s looking at Saturn too. J: Yes. Let’s colour the star on his T-shirt yellow. A: OK. A: Now, let’s draw something! J: OK.
A: Let’s draw a telescope. J: OK, but where? A: Under the table. J: OK. Done. J: I want to write something now. A: OK. What do you want to write? J: Ermmm, let’s write FUTURE. A: Yes! Write it above the boys and girls playing baseball. J: The boys, girls and alien playing baseball! A: Oh yes, sorry! I forgot about the alien. 12
1 Emma: Oh no! I’ve forgotten to pack my book! Dad: Really? But you love that book. E: I know. I think I’ve left it at home. D: Were you reading it on the sofa? E: No, I was reading it in the bath. D: So have you left it in the bathroom? E: Yes, I think so. 2 E: Oh no! I’ve left my skateboard somewhere too. D: Oh Emma! I told you to check your bags before we got off the ferry. E: I did check! I haven’t left it on the ferry. D: Where have you left it then? E: On the helicopter, I think. D: Yes. I remember you had it before we got on. 3 E: Oh no! I can’t find my parrot now. D: Seriously, Emma? Have you looked under the bed? E: Yes, I have. It’s not there. D: Have you left that on the ferry? E: Yes, I think I have! I was playing with it as we arrived in the harbour! 4 E: Oh no! I’ve left my mask somewhere too. D: I can’t believe this Emma. You’ve lost all your favourite things. E: I know, Dad. And I know exactly where I’ve left the mask. D: Where? E: On my chair. D: Which chair? At home? E: No, in the restaurant. D: Oh, Emma! E: I really need to be more careful! 13
Julie: Hi Stuart, can I ask you a couple of questions? Stuart: Sure, what about? J: Have you organised a summer camp for your kids yet? I need to organise something for the summer. S: Yes, I have actually. I’ve booked a drama camp for them. J: Wow, that sounds cool. Where is it? S: It’s in an old theatre. J: In the city? S: No, in a little village. J: So, where do they sleep? In the theatre? S: No, the theatre hasn’t got space. J: Ahh, so the children don’t stay at the camp at night. S: No, you can pick them up if you want but they can also stay. J: But where? In a hotel? S: No! They sleep under the stars, in tents. J: How amazing! And is it all acting or are there other activities? S: Well, my kids have only ever spoken about the acting but I did read that they offer other things. J: Like singing or playing an instrument? S: No, they might do that but what I read about was directing. J: Directing? That sounds fun.

J: Really, is it quite a new place? S: Yes, I think so. It’s been open for 3 years. J: Right, I think it sounds great. Have you got their phone number? S: Yes, hold on. Here, it’s six - zero - five - two - four - double one. J: Brilliant! Thanks, Stuart. S: No problem. 14
1 Mum: How was the concert last week, Billy? Billy: Oh, it was great, Mum. Claire played her instrument brilliantly. M: Your dad said she has stopped playing the piano now? B: No, she hasn’t stopped; she’s just trying new instruments. M: So, what did she play in the concert then, a didgeridoo? B: No, she played the bagpipes. And I can’t believe how well she did it. M: Wow, that’s a difficult instrument, I certainly couldn’t do that! 2 M: Billy, come and look at these photographs. B: Wow, that boy is break-dancing. Cool. M: Yes, and this boy is playing ice-hockey. B: Oh, I tried that once, but I wasn’t very good. M: Yes, but it was fun! Oh, look this reminds me of our holiday last year. B: Oh yeah! I learnt to mime! It was great. I haven’t practised much recently, though. M: Well, go and tidy your room and then after you can do a show for me! B: OK! 2 B: Hey, can we look at the pictures from my birthday party before I tidy my room? M: OK, why not? There were some fantastic costumes! B: Yes, but I think Laura’s was the best. M: Did she come as a pirate? B: No, that was Jack! He has seen that film a hundred times! M: OK, well did she dress up as a fairy? B: No! Here she is! Look! M: Ah yes! I remember now. She came dressed as a witch! B: Yeah! With a green face! 15
Eve: Hi, Peter! Can you help me with something? Peter: Sure, what do you need? E: I’m planning our summer holiday and I can’t decide between two places. P: OK, which two places? E: Argentina and Mexico. P: Well, I’ve been to Argentina so maybe I can help. E: Fantastic! Where did you stay when you were there? P: In Buenos Aires. My family has friends there. E: And how long did you stay for? P: In Argentina, two weeks, then I stayed for another week in Brazil. E: Wow! And who did you go with? Your family? P: No. My mum couldn’t come so I went with my dad. E: Just the two of you, how lovely. I bet you saw some incredible things. P: Yeah, we saw lots of things. The most amazing were the waterfalls and the glaciers. E: It sounds wonderful. Argentina here we come! 16
Girl: Look at this picture of when we went to the woods. Boy: That was a great day. G: A great day for most of us, but not for Alfie. B: Why, what happened to Alfie? I can’t remember. G: Well, he was with another boy and they went for a walk in the woods.
94 514698 _ 0081-0094.indd 94
Mr Brown told them, ‘You must wear insect repellent and you mustn’t go barefoot’. B: But Alfie didn’t get bitten, did he? G: No, Alfie didn’t get bitten. But the boy he was with got a painful insect bite on his foot. Alfie had to carry him all the way back to the picnic area! B: Oh yes, I remember now! Poor Alfie! B: Do you remember how wet we all got after lunch? G: Yes, there was a terrible thunderstorm. B: And you can see it starting in this picture. G: Yes, you can. There’s Sara and her friend, they are looking at the sky. They look really worried. B: Is Sara the girl wearing the short-sleeved T-shirt? G: No, her T-shirt’s got long sleeves. G: And look, there’s Billy. B: What’s he doing? Is he eating a sandwich? Those sandwiches were really good. G: I know! But, no, Billy isn’t eating in this picture. B: What’s he doing then? G: He’s with the boy and the girl who are eating. Look. B: Oh, I can see him now. He’s sitting at the picnic table. G: Yes, he's pointing to the hummingbird that’s flying above them. B: And who is sitting with Billy? G: Well, there are a couple of people. Do you not remember anyone? B: I know the boy who has a lizard on his T-shirt. I play football with him. G: And the boy who is eating a sandwich? B: Yes, I know him too. G: I know the girl. That’s Andrea. B: The girl eating the sandwich? G: Yes. She goes to our school. 17
G: Shall we colour the picture now? B: That's a good idea. G: We shoud colour Mr. Brown. He’s standing next to the boy with the insect bite on his foot. B: Yes, let’s colour his hat. G: Perfect. I’ll colour it yellow. B: Let’s write something now. G: Should we write something on the big cloud? B: No, but let's write something under it. G: OK, what should we write? B: Let’s write ‘STORM’. G: OK. I’m writing it now. Storm. G: You should draw something too. B: OK, what should I draw? G: Why don’t you draw a spider? B: Ooh. Yes. Where? G: On the girl’s back! B: Which girl, there are three? G: The girl who’s standing up, looking at the sky and wearing a short sleeved T-shirt. B: OK, I’m drawing it now. It looks great! G: And finally, we must colour one more thing. B: I agree, but what? G: Why don’t we colour someone’s T-shirt. B: OK, Alfie’s T-shirt? G: No. How about the boy next to him? The boy with the insect bite? B: Yes. I’m colouring his T-shirt purple. G: It looks great.

Play Track 18. Tell the children to follow along in their books. Divide the class into two groups. Assign the first verse to one group and the second verse to the other, and have them try to memorise it. The whole class will sing the chorus together. Play the track and have the children sing along. Practise until they can perform the song without the track or the lyrics.
2 Play the Christmas game. Divide the class into pairs. Give each pair a coin and show them heads and tails. Explain that if the coin lands on heads, they move two spaces, and if it lands on tails, they move one. The children play the game. Once they finish, have them switch partners and play again. Monitor and check. Ask the questions around the class at the end.
3 Play a Christmas memory game. Materials: Coloured pens, scissors, glue, one sheet of A4 card per child. Show the children the pictures and go over key vocabulary as a class. Tell the children to colour in their pictures. When they have finished, they stick their sheet of paper onto A4 card, and then cut the pictures out. Put the children into pairs, and tell them to put their pictures together, shuffle them and place them face down on the table. Children take turns to turn over two cards at a time. If a player finds a pair, he or she keeps the cards, if not, they turn them over again. Encourage the children to say the names of the objects as they turn the cards over. The winner is the player who finds the most pairs.
4 Make a Christmas tree decoration. Materials: glitter, straws (1 per student), green paint, template. Ask: Do you decorate your houses at Christmas? What do you use for decorations? What can you use to decorate a Christmas tree? Tell the children to cut out the parts of the decoration. Show them how to colour the adornments on each level carefully and paint the rest green. Show them how to decorate the edges with glitter. Distribute the straws. Help students punch holes in the levels and push the straws through. Have them glue and glitter the star and attach it to the top of the straw. Display the decorations around the classroom. The children can take them home for Christmas.

Extension Easter Eggs Materials: hard-boiled eggs (1 per student) Explain that eggs are an Easter symbol because they represent new life. Easter is a time when many animals are born and flowers bloom. Give each student an egg. Have them decorate their eggs with markers and paint. Ask them to write their names on their eggs. Have students display their eggs and say which are their favorites and why.
Extension
Read the instructions aloud. Explain what a challenge is and look at the box for examples. Brainstorm more challenges and write them on the board. Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a paper bag and strips of paper. Have each child write two challenges on strips of paper and put them in the bag. Play Track 20 again and tell the children to move around the room freely, dancing, skipping, spinning or however they like. Stop the music and tell the children to stop and keep still. Watch the statues carefully and if any are moving, have them take a strip of paper from the bag and take the challenge.
Easter Egg Puzzle Race Materials: paper (1 sheet per student), cardboard, colored markers Have students draw an egg on a sheet of paper. Make sure the eggs are more or less the same size. Have students draw patterns on their eggs and color them. Ask them to glue their eggs onto a piece of cardboard. Tell students to cut out their eggs and then cut them into eight pieces. Divide the class into teams of five or six students. Have all the students in the team put their pieces together and mix them up. The first team to put all the eggs back together again wins. Award a prize to the winning team.
3 Make a rabbit mask for Easter. Materials: string or elastic (1 piece per child), cotton wool, red and silver sequins. Tell the children to cut out the rabbit face and ears. 1 Tim: Hi, Annabel. Can I ask you some questions for my homework? Annabel: Hi, Tim. What’s your homework about? T: It’s about friends. Are you ready? A: Yes. T: Right. First question. Who is your best friend? A: Oh, that’s easy. It’s Lisa. 2 T: OK. Next question then. Where does she live? A: Oh, she lives near the centre of town. In Northdown Road. T: How do you spell Northdown? A: Just the way it sounds. N-O-R-T-H-D-O-W-N. T: Ah, OK. Northdown. Got it. 3 T: OK. So, do you see her a lot? A: Yes, I suppose so. T: How often do you see her? A: Erm, it depends. In summer I only see her once a month, because she goes to stay with her grandparents, but the rest of the year I see her every week. T: So you usually see her every week? A: Yes. 4 T: OK. When do you meet? After school? A: No, not usually. I’ve got homework and after school activities most days so I don’t have time. T: Oh, OK. A: Sometimes I see her after school on Fridays, but we usually meet at weekends. T: At weekends. OK. 5 T: Next question. Why do you like your friend? A: Why do I like her? T: Yeah. Is she funny? Talkative? A: Oh! OK. Well, I suppose I like her because she’s outgoing. She’s a lot of fun to be with. T: OK, she’s outgoing. Great.

6 T: Right, last question. You meet at the weekend, right? A: Yes, on Saturdays. T: OK. What do you do on Saturdays? A: Well, last week my dad drove us to the mountains. That was excellent, but we don’t usually do that. We usually go to the cinema. T: Go to the cinema. Cool. OK, well that’s all! Thanks for answering my questions! A: No problem! Any time. 23
1 Melissa: Hi, Luke. What are you reading? Luke: Oh, hi Melissa. I’m reading an email from my cousin. She’s travelling around the world and she’s having lots of amazing adventures! M: Really? Like what? L: Well, she was swimming in Hawaii when sharks attacked her! M: Sharks? Oh no! Was she OK? L: Oh, yes. She was fine. 2 L: But do you know what happened to her at the North Pole? M: No. What happened? Did she see a Polar bear? L: No. She was walking on the ice when she fell into a crack! M: Oh! That was scary! L: Yes! 3 M: Where else did she go? Did she visit Australia? L: Yes, she did. But you’ll never guess what happened! M: Oh, no! What happened? L: Well, she was walking across Australia when a snake bit her! M: Aaah! I hate snakes! 4 L: Oh! There’s more. M: Oh, no! Tell me! L: Well, she was cycling in Alaska when a snowstorm hit. M: Wow! Was she OK? L: Yes, she was fine. She stayed the night at a farm. M: Oh, good! 5 L: Oh, it says here that she’s learning to fly a plane. M: Cool! L: Oh! But... She was flying a plane when the engine caught fire! M: No! That’s unbelievable! L: I know! Hey, look. She sent me some photos. Do you want to see? 24

K: Well, no. Usually the animals take care of their own babies. But I do have to help the animals when they’re ill. T: Do you have to clean the shark tank? K: Oh, no! An expert diver comes to the zoo. He cleans the tank for us. T: Is there anything else you have to do? K: I have to teach children about the animals. There are classes on Saturdays. Would you like to come? T: Wow! That sounds great! 27
Man: Hi, and welcome to Space Trivia! Today’s trivia is about life on the Moon! Contestants, are you ready? Children: Yes! M: Have you ever been to the Moon on holiday? Girl: I went there last year. Tell me! what happens if you kick a ball? L: Well, she was cycling in Alaska when a snowstorm hit. G: The ball flies very, very far! M: Wow! Was she OK? M: That’s absolutely correct! OK. Question 2. What happens if you fly a kite? L: Oh! But... She was flying a plane when the engine caught fire! B: You can’t. The kite falls, just like the pencil. M: No! That’s unbelievable! L: I know! Hey, look. She sent me some photos. Do you want to see? M: Correct! There’s no air on the Moon, so you can’t fly a kite! Question 4: what happens if you play music? 25 G: Nothing happens. You need air to play music. M: Correct again! Excellent! Question five… Girl: Where are we going to have the school Olympics this year? Boy: I don’t know. We can have it in the park, in the gymnasium or 28 at the stadium. I think the park is the best place. Kevin: Hey, Leanne! Did you have a good summer holiday? G: But it’s going to rain this week. Leanne: Oh, hi Kevin. Yeah, I did. B: Oh. You’re right. It’ll be too wet to have our Olympics outside. K: Where did you go? G: So we can’t have it in the stadium, either. L: I went to Brazil. B: No. I guess the school Olympics will be in the gymnasium, but K: Nice! Who did you go with? it’s a bit small. L: With my parents. G: I think it’s big enough. And the gymnasium will be the driest place. K: What did you do? B: You’re right. We can have our Olympics in the gymnasium. L: We went to Copacabana beach most days. And we saw a football match in the 26 Maracaná. Tom: Hi, are you Kate Anderson? K: Wow! I haven’t been to a football match. Was it fun? Kate: Yes. I’m a zookeeper here at the City Zoo. L: Not really; it was a bit boring. Nobody scored! T: Can I ask you some questions about your job? 29 K: Of course. T: Is your job difficult?
