Description

Khoi Dang

For Flute & Bb Clarinet

How on earth did anyone get the idea that people can communicate with one another By letter. Of a distant person one can think, and of a person who is neea one can catch hold - all else goes beyond human strength. Writing letters, however, means to denude oneself before the ghosts, something for which they greedily wait. Written kisses don't reach their destination, rather they are drunk on the way by the ghost... The ghosts won't starve, but we will perish.

In a way, you are poetry material; You are full of cloudy subtleties I am willing to spend a lifetime figuring out. Words burst in your essence and you carry their dust in the pores of your ethereal individuality.

Performance Notes YDN (Dialogue in Dream Language) for flute and Bb clarinet is a coded expression of affection. It is based on an excerpt from a Kafka's letter to his beloved Milena. In this work, music serves as a form of meta-language, a coded language, to facilitate the dialogue between two entities.
