Physical & Health Education MYP YEAR 5 Year 10 Badminton Doubles Criterion B Game Plan Task 1 1. Identify your own strengths and weaknesses Strengths: 1. During a match, I am able to serve forehand very comfortably and accurately. 2. During a match, I am able to clear shots towards the opponent’s court. 3. During a match, I am able to both hit the shuttlecock using back and forehand. Weaknesses: 1. During a match, sometimes I am not able to perform the drive serve. 2. During a match, sometimes I may not be able to hit the shuttlecock using my backhand. 3. During a match, sometimes I forgot to stand back in the base location of the court, therefore allowing the opponent to perform a smash towards that empty area. 2. Identify your partner’s strengths and weaknesses Strengths: 1. During a match, my partner is able to perform clear shots towards the opponent’s court accurately. 2. During a match, my partner is able to perform drop shots when the shuttlecock is close to the net. 3. During a match, my partner is able to quickly return back to the base location of the court after each shot. Weaknesses: 1. During a match, sometimes my partner is unable to serve the shuttlecock towards the correct side of the court. 2. During a match, sometimes my partner is unable to perform smash. 3. During a match, sometimes my partner is unable to hit back the shuttlecock after the opponent performs a push shot. Based on the weaknesses you have identified above, suggest technical ways to improve and strengthen these weak spots. Weakness 1 (Unable to perform the drive serves) Drive serves are serves that allow the shuttlecock to travel fast and low over the net so that it makes a horizontal flight over the net. During the matches and experiences I had before, I’ve noticed that I was not able to perform the drive serve, and are definitely a disadvantage for me during matches. To improve this, I will try to practice only serving this drive serve once a week and approximately 10-15 shots. This will enable me to be able to focus on practising a specific serve. Also, I will try to use more drive serves during practising matches, this will allow my peers to give me some feedback on my performance, but

also more opportunity to try out the actual serve in a match. Weakness 2 (Unable to hit shuttlecock using backhand) Personally, I’m a right-hander, and it has been a challenge hitting the shuttlecock using backhand. Most of the time during matches, I noticed that the reason why I was not able to hit the shuttlecock was that my timing and accuracy was not good enough when using backhand. Therefore, to improve this I will try to kindly ask my peers to serve different types of short towards my backhand side so that I can practice performing the backhand hit for different situations. Weakness 3 (Forgot to return to base location) From the past experience of playing matches with others, one of the biggest problems that I always notice is that I always forgot to return back to the base location of the court, which is crucial in a badminton game. Although this usually applies most in single badminton matches, but I believe that this is very important for double matches as well. Returning back to the base location allows us to have a better sight of the shuttlecock when the opponent hits back, but also allow us to easily go towards corners of the court and better reaction. To improve this, I will try to practice the different routes for running towards a different location of the court and try to remind myself that every single time I need to return back towards the base location. I will also try to ask my peers to serve a few shots towards my side, and allow me to form a habit of returning to the base location of the court.

Task 2: Game Plan Now you know your own strengths and weaknesses as well as those of your opponents you will need to come up with your game plan. *Remarks: A=Herman B=Edmond Game Plan 1 - Make a plan on how you will use your team’s strengths 1. Description of team formation; state and outline your initial game plan on how you will use your team’s strengths (player’s role, expectations, analyze the opposite team’s play strategy etc.)

For the first week, our team will be focusing on practicing our team working skills, therefore we will be mainly playing in a Defensive side-side formation. I will be focusing on the left side of the court, and my partner would be on the other side. We don’t have a lot of expectations on the first week, but we do hope that we can use this as a chance to strengthen our serving and rallying skills. At the start of a match, me and my partner will analyze the opponent team’s strategies first and come up with possible tactics to counterattack. We will be serving towards the opposite side (represented by the blue arrows), and using both drive and high serve. During the match, me and my partner will be responsible for hitting the shuttlecocks in our own side of the

A

B

court (represented by the red arrows). However, during emergency or sudden situations me and my partner can both help and hit the shuttlecock in any location of the court (represented by the purple arrow), this allows us to have more freedom and chance of hitting the shuttlecock back, decreasing our chance of losing a point. Our team is

planning to focus on performing clear shots during the first half of the match, because we believe that this will definitely decrease the opponent’s ability and their energy level, therefore we can gain a advantage in the second half of the match.

Summarize your team’s performance, design and outline a (better) game plan for next week’s lesson. (Did your team give their best while playing? Suggest possible changes for a better team formation and team strategy. State and outline two team tactics/formations/strategies to be applied in the next game.) Overall I do believe that our team did a pretty good job during each match with other classmates, although it was our first

week practicing double badminton but still I think me and my partner cooperated pretty well. We started off this week with a defensive formation to try and grasp what it’s like during a double badminton match but also we feel like it’s the best formation for warming up. Since it was the first week, I and my partner didn’t push ourselves to our limits yet, although we did try our best to practice how double badminton works and basically we’re trying to adapt this new formation style. Now that we’ve practiced a few times of how double badminton works and we feel like we’re ready to try something new, therefore next week we’ll try to play in an offensive formation. We’ll try to practice being more offensive and engaging, therefore we’ll try to perform more clear and smash shots to try and gain more points and as a result, develop our attack skills. Although we’ll be changing to an offensive formation, we will still maintain developing our team working skills further since we believe that it’s crucial in a double badminton game.

Con’t Game Plan #1 *Remarks: A=Herman B=Edmond 1. State, describe and outline a new / improved /revised game plan based on last week’s performance. From the experience that we got last week, our team will be focusing on practicing our attacking skills but at the same time continue to strengthen our team working skills, therefore we will be mainly playing in an Offensive front-back formation. I will be focusing on the back of the court, and my partner would be in the front of the court, but this formation could change anytime during a match (represented by the purple arrow). Since we’ve now warmed up and practiced the basic skills for double badminton, we will expect ourselves to be able to switch between the offensive and defensive formation anytime during a match. Also we would want to maintain our serving skills, as usual we will be in

B

charge of serving in our own respective side of the court (represented by the blue arrow). At the start of the match, me and my partner will try to stay in the defensive formation for 2-3 serves to try and analyze the opponent team’s strategies first and come up with possible tactics to

A

counterattack, then we will switch back to a offensive formation of the rest of the match. During the match, we will now be responsible for

returning the shuttlecocks based on where it seems to land, if it’s in the front of the court my partner is responsible (represented by the green arrows), and I’m responsible for the back of the court (represented by the red arrows). Therefore, this week my partner will be practicing returning drive and drop shots from the opponent, and I will be practicing returning the smash and clear shots from the opponent. However, during emergency or sudden situations me and my partner can both help and hit the shuttlecock in any location of the court, which this allows us to have more freedom and chance of hitting the shuttlecock back, decreasing our chance of losing a point. Our team is planning to focus on performing clear shots during the first half of the match, because we believe that this will definitely decrease the opponent’s ability and their energy level, therefore we can gain an advantage in the second half of the match.

Summarize your team’s performance, construct and outline the final (and the best!) game plan to be used in your final assessment. Overall I believe that our team really did improve a lot from the experience of the matches with other classmates earlier last week. I think that our overall performance, especially our offensive skills have improved a lot throughout these weeks. Last week we focused on building up our team working skills, and we’ve continued working on our team working skills this week, as a result we feel like we’ve definitely cooperated much efficient and better this time and much fewer mistakes performed. Our final game plan would be focusing on making use of both our defensive and offensive formation skills that we’ve been practicing the past 2 weeks, on the first half of the match we’ll be in a defensive formation and we’ll be switching to an offensive formation on the other half. Same as before, for both formations my partner will be focusing on the front areas of the court (mainly receiving drive shots) and I’ll be focusing on the back areas of the court (mainly receiving smash and clear shots). Although same as the past few weeks, our plan is that anyone of us could help out in all areas of the court during emergency situations in order to minimize as few point lost as possible. For the serving, mainly I will be the person who’s going to start the match, but anyone of us could serve according to the specific score we’re on at that moment. Both of us will perform different types of serves in intervals, and we’ll try to confuse our opponent on the type of serve that we’ll be

performing and that’s one of our tactics. Another tactic that our team will focus on is that when we perform smash shots, we’ll aim at areas that our opponent members are further away from or requires more reaction time for them to return, which allows us to score points easier. We hope that this game plan based on the experience from last 2 weeks would be successful. Game plan 2 – Make a plan on how you will exploit your opponents’ weaknesses 1. Describe, state and outline an initial game plan on how you will exploit your opponent’s weaknesses.

*Remarks: A=Herman B=Edmond For this alternative game plan that aims to exploit our opponent’s weakness, from our experience the last 2 weeks we believe that most of the opponent’s weakness is their in-consistency of shots. We analyzed their performance and weaknesses, and we believe that a defensive formation would be the best to counter their weakness. From the various matches that we’ve played with different opponent, we believe that most of them lose points because of their mistakes when they perform smash and drive shots. As a result, we plan to aim at leading them to making these mistakes. To do this we try to perform more clear shots (represented by the red arrows) and drive shots (represented by the

A

B

blue arrows), which usually everyone’s reaction is to either return by performing smash or drive shots, which sometimes they might encounter their mistakes and we can gain points through this tactic. However, we understand that this tactic might not always work, therefore we plan to stand in a front and back position when we

perform this tactic. In this formation we could easily return the shots that the opponent performs in case they don’t make any mistakes, which is an alternative plan during emergency. 2. Analyze each player’s performance after playing in week #1 Name#

Summarize your team’s performance, design and outline a (better) game plan for next week’s lesson. Suggest possible changes for a better team formation and team strategy. State and outline two team tactics / formations / strategies to be applied in the next game/lesson.) Overall our team really did encounter and exploited some of our opponent’s weaknesses throughout the matches that we did with various teams. I think that our team’s performance really did improve a lot throughout the past few weeks, and certainly, it has improved from our revised game plan. Now during matches, I and my partner cooperate very efficiently and there are far fewer mistakes or communication errors compared to the past few weeks. This week we tried our new game plan in which we used both the offensive and defensive formation throughout the match. We followed our game plan and we switched from the first half in a defensive formation into an offensive formation in the second half, however that didn’t work too well. We decided to change this in our future game plan, in which we will reverse the order of our formation. From the matches we see that our

opponents tend to attack and engage more often in the second half of the match, meaning that it would not be a good idea to be in an offensive formation in the second half. Also next time, we will be introducing a tactic to attack our opponent quickly. To do this, we will sometimes switch to an offensive formation throughout the match (mostly when we believe that the opponent is tired or distracted), then we will try our best to find chances to perform smashes towards the corners of the opponent’s court area. Same as before, we will still maintain developing our team working skills further since we believe that it’s crucial in a double badminton game. Con’t Game Plan #2 1. State, describe and outline a new/ improved/revised game plan based on last week’s performance. *Remarks: A=Herman B=Edmond From the experience that we’ve learned from last week’s matches with other classmates, we’ve now decided that we shouldn’t have a fixed plan on what time we should be using which formation, instead now we can change our formation anytime during a match. We analyzed their performance and weaknesses, and we believe that still many teams are lack in their consistency of shots, especially when performing smash and drive shots. As a result, we’ve decided to follow mostly the tactics of our last week’s game plan, in which we plan to aim at leading them to making these mistakes. To do this we try to perform more clear shots (represented by the red arrows) and drive shots (represented by the blue arrows), which usually everyone’s reaction is to either return by

performing smash or drive shots, which sometimes they might encounter their mistakes and we can gain points through this tactic. However, we understand that this tactic might not always work, therefore we plan to stand in a front and back position when we perform this tactic. In this formation we could easily return the shots that the opponent performs in

case they don’t make any mistakes, which is an alternative plan during emergency. Moreover, since we believe that it’s crucial to perform some attack during a match in-order to gain points and put pressure on our opponent, therefore we’ll sometimes engage attacks by performing multiple smash shots towards the corner area of the opponent’s court (represented by the green arrows).

much slower in the late games. Summarize your team’s performance, construct and outline the final (and the best!) game plan to be used in your final assessment. Overall our team really did a great job in dealing with some of the strong opponents that we’ve faced during the matches using our game plan. Our game plan focused on more of a balanced idea in which we’ve decided to incorporate the offensive and defensive formation together and switch between when needed instead of having a time frame of when to switch. I think that this idea really worked well and has certainly boosted our performance throughout the matches, therefore we believe that this should definitely be maintained for our final assessment. Also from our revised game plan, we’ve decided to make use of a new tactic which aims to attack the opponent quickly and to not let them predict when we’ll be attacking. From the actual experience of using this tactic during the matches, we believe that it worked realty well although we think that we should keep this tactic in the second half of the match to increase the chance of succeeding since some opponents may have consumed a lot of their energy. This tactic will definitely stay for our final assessment. Furthermore, for serving me and my partner both could be responsible for serving, however for the final assessment we’ve decided that we should be responsible for performing different types of serves throughout the game. I and my partner will change the types of serve that each of us is responsible for throughout the game, I will be focusing on performing high and flick serves and my partner will be focusing on performing drive and low serves. We hope that this last and most revised game plan would be successful in our final assessment.
