IN THE NEWS Nursing home to be B&B? PLANS to change the Rosslyn Nursing Home into bed and breakfast are to go before Wirral councillors. The developers want to make alterations to the premises at 2-4 Hoscote Park, West Kirby, with new parking to front and associated landscaping, rear extension to form breakfast room, outside upgrade and minor modifications including finishes. MP’s search for a new apprentice WIRRAL West MP Esther McVey has launched her own apprenticeship scheme. Miss Mcvey, who lives in West Kirby, is to employ a modern apprentice in her constituency office. She said: “If every MP were to employ apprentices, it could result in around 1,000 jobs. In Wirral we have a great apprentice scheme, and, while it is doing well, it is seriously over-subscribed. Forum date The next West Wirral Area Forum is Thursday 21st October 7pm-9pm at Blackhorse Hill Junior School, Saughall Massie Road, West Kirby. This is the chance to catch up on what is being planned for Hoylake and West Kirby and to have your say on future council services in the area. New additions to local police THREE new Special Constables have been recruited by the police in West Kirby. The increase in volunteer staff will provide an addition to the service the local policing team offer to the community. The newly recruited officers are Elizabeth Robinson, Mike Dowdall and Mike Barrowman. They have already been on patrol in the area, with Special Constable Barrowman, on his first evening out on patrol, helping a regular colleague to detain a female who ran away from the officers. If you have information about crime or anti-social behaviour in your neighbourhood, you can contact your team directly on 0151 709 6010, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Quad bikes used in crime battle POLICE used quad bikes to tackle problems on the beach at West Kirby this summer. The summer months are always busy for the police in West Kirby. This time they adopted a different approach to ensure that there was a reduction in the number of incidents of crimes or anti-social behaviour. They used plain-clothes police and the use of quad bikes to deal with people’s misbehaviour in parks and on the beach. Police also worked with British Transport Police and the Merseyrail Revenue Protection team to ensure that the rail system into West Kirby is safe. Other issues tackled include enforcing an alcohol-free zone in the town.

Interior design thoughts with Ally MacDermot, from Your Choice Interiors

Paint v Wallpaper There is no denying that wallpaper is back with a vengeance. It could be the three rolls of feature wallpaper with its strong bold colours and designs for the chimney breast or it could be a hessian style texture suitable for all walls. Big bold patterns need not be confined to just one wall either, there are lots of dramatic Dining Rooms and Cloakrooms in West Wirral. Harlequin and Thibaut couldn’t be more different as suppliers, but both worth having a look at. Then there is paint - not the thin cheap emulsion in limp colours, but the strong dense colour achievable from Farrow and Ball or Little Greene Paint Company. Rich, deep tones that shout quality as soon as you dip the paintbrush in the tin- beware of cheap imitations! Paint needs a very flat surface, and a steady hand, to achieve a good result. If your walls aren’t even, don’t despair - there are many different grades of lining paper that will cover those imperfections before the paint goes on. I would always suggest two if not three coats of paint to achieve a good colour on most walls. Wallpaper can give you a fairly dramatic look reasonably quickly and inexpensively if all you need is two rolls for the chimney breast. Many of the papers are prepasted and relatively easy for a novice to hang. Beware of stripes if your walls or chimney breast run out. Paint can look very different from the colour on the front of the tin due to lighting and shadow in your own home. Always buy a tester pot if in doubt. Whatever you do, if it’s not applied correctly to the wall surface the effect will be ruined. Take your time - or call in an expert.

Stylish shutters stunning homeowners Interior Plantation Shutters are the hottest trend in interior décor because they are gorgeous, stylish and incredibly functional – and as the dark winter nights draw in they are coming into their own.

That’s the view of the Wirral’s expect on window coverings Marc McQuilliam from Apollo Blinds who says the winter months are the best for showcasing how versatile Shutters are. “As well as looking absolutely fantastic, it’s easy to see why Shutters are becoming so popular,” said Marc. “They have excellent energy savings properties because when they are closed they become a robust barrier which prevents heat loss escaping through windows. “Slatted Shutters are also fantastic for providing privacy while not blocking out light. This makes them a popular option in front rooms and bedrooms; but we’re also seeing a massive number of consumers putting shutters in bathrooms. This is down to their simplicity and clean styling.” Marc says that Shutters can be tailored to fit conventional and non-conventional window shapes, and colour matched to customer’s requirements be it wood, stained or painted.

They come in a variety of styles, to fit any shape of window or door such as tier on tier shutters that operate like a stable door, where one shutter sits on top of another and they open independently of each other. Bi-fold shutters are ideal for large windows and allow the shutters to be folded back. Full height shutters span the whole window to offer a seamless effect, while the café style option just covers the bottom half of the window where screening is required to leave the top section exposed. “Shutters are extremely versatile,” said Marc. “They suit most styles of room in modern loft apartments or Georgian town houses; but above all it’s that they’re currently considered simply more stylish than curtains or other shading options. For more information about how Plantation Shutters and how Apollo Blinds can make your home beautiful either call Marc McQuilliam on 0151 203 6160 or 07863 805638 or visit www. apollo-blinds.co.uk/wirral

Are you running the risk of outliving your sAvings? Financial column with Simon Tutton, from the Hadlow Edwards Partnership

A

lthough the State Pension provides a limited income (currently £5,077 for a single person, per annum, based on a full NI record), it falls drastically short of what is really needed to fund a comfortable lifestyle. So how do we avoid poverty in retirement? First, decide how large a fund you will need. One method is to multiply your target retirement income by 25. For example, if you need £25,000 a year, aim for a fund of £625,000. Next, select the most appropriate investment vehicles to achieve your goal. Property, Investment Bonds and ISAs have all proved popular over recent years but don’t offer the same degree of tax breaks or guarantees as a pension. Take advice from a trusted financial professional. If your retirement is imminent you will obviously want to maximise your income from the money available. But be aware – you’ll need to make it last. Retirement funds are coming under increasing pressure from the simple fact that we are living longer. In 1981, a person’s pension was expected to last them for 16 years. Now it needs to last 22 years. So where

£100,000 provided an annual income of £6,250 in 1981, £137,500 is required today to achieve the same income.

So what are your best income options? Most people will be familiar with annuities, whereby you exchange pension funds for a guaranteed annual income form a life assurance company. Annuities are fixed for life but they can be linked to inflation and furthermore, can provide your partner with an income when you pass away. The annuity rate offered by the life assurer is affected by the prevailing yield on gilts and corporate bonds. Annuity rates have recently been falling. Nevertheless, it is imperative to exercise the Open Market Option – your right to compare annuity rated in the market – before making a decision. An alternative to an annuity is something called income drawdown. These schemes aim to outperform annuities by investing in assets such as stocks and shares. Why not start by spending an hour with me (at no cost or obligation). I would be delighted to hear from you. Please call on 0800 652 8175 or email [email protected] to book an appointment or to obtain 5 tax free saving tips on the subject of pensions. Top chef makes his mark at Hillbark Hotel Great British menu finalist and Michelin star chef Aiden Byrne has launched his latest venture at the luxurious boutique Hotel Hillbark in Frankby, Wirral. Aiden Byrne is taking over the three restaurants within the hotel including the former Yellow Room, brand new contemporary Cellar and the relaxed Grill Room. He has implemented a complete overhaul of all the menus, injecting his unique approach to modern British cuisine and ‘opening up the restaurants to a wider audience’. Originally from Kirkby he became the youngest chef to be awarded a Michelin star, aged just 22. Over the past 16 years he has worked at some of the UK’s leading restaurants including The Grill room at The Dorchester, Pied a Terre in London, Adlard’s in Norwich, The Commons in Dublin and Danesfieldhouse in Buckinghamshire. Aiden is at the helm of his own succesful venture – the amazingly popular Church Green in Lymm “I will still oversee every element of the Church Green offering but I couldn’t be more excited about this amazing new venture and the challenge that lies ahead,” Aiden told West Coast magazine. Aiden plans to split his time between the Church Green and Hillbark Hotel, where he will be present Monday to Friday, travelling back to Lymm at the weekend. l Pictured are Paula Brown Nicky Saverimotto, Wirral MP Ester McVey, Carolyn Hughes and Mandy Molby sampling the new menu at Hillbark. West Wirral Car Club

Martyn, Mandy.... and Vanessa Those who have read these articles from the beginning will know that the cars featured all belong to the West Wirral car club, meeting at The Cottage Loaf Thurstaston and known as Triumph Appreciation Wirral & Friends. This month I am introducing you to one of the ‘Friends’, a 1930 Austin 7 known as Vanessa; she is one of our very best mates. Despite her advancing years and odd wrinkle, Vanessa always wants to come out and play and in fact is game for...well, almost anything, despite her diminutive size. The big, younger boys of the club, with their six packs love to lure her out into the countryside and then see if they can get her into trouble doing things she really shouldn’t be doing, especially at her age! They trick her into steep long hill climbs half hoping she won’t make it, then perhaps worst of all, they watch as she comes down the other side grabbing feverishly at her brakes as she tries to keep on the straight and narrow; brakes which only work on the rear wheels, when you press the pedal. Once when she was out, her master got so anxious he pulled on her hand-brake lever as well...and had a moment of enlightenment. Vanessa was now really digging her heals in as Martyn discovered the right way to handle the little madam. Foot for her rear end, hand for her front! One thing us guys like best about Vanessa is that she doesn’t cost much to take out. Road tax exempt, inexpensive insurance, easily fixed with cheap and readily obtained spare parts and in these days of expensive fuel she even is a very light drinker. Maybe this really is ‘back to the future’ stuff. After years of endless teasing and never once falling by the wayside, Vanessa decided it was time to show the big boys what she was really made of, what she could really do, so one day she challenged them all to come out for a REALLY, REALLY long run with her. At first a good number said they would come along to keep an eye on her and make sure she didn’t get into trouble but then, one by one, they all started to make excuses until there was only a few left. Finally they all chickened out and poor Vanessa was left on her own having her bluff called. Undeterred, just eight weeks ago, she set off carrying Martyn and Mandy and their luggage all the way to John O’Groats at the top of Britain and then all the way down again to Lands End at the bottom before returning home, none the worse for wear. Although she has recently celebrated her 80th birthday she did this to raise money for children at Claire House and deserves a very big pat on the back for her achievement. If you keep your eyes open it’s likely you will see her scurrying around someday as she rarely puts her wheels up for long. If you see her you can be sure she will go straight to Clair House if you push a few pounds her way. Dave Evennett [email protected]

s on the move The Norse Hogback Stone has been on show in St Bridget’s Church for many years – a reflection of the Viking presence in West Kirby and the Wirral as well as over 1000 years of Christian worship at St Bridget’s Church. The stone was found on the site when St Bridget’s Church was extended in 1869/70. Hogback Stones are believed to act as markers for the burial place of important members of the Norse community and to represent contemporary buildings with a tiled roof and with plaited or interlaced carving on the side. On 6th September the stone was carefully removed by specialists in the movement of old artefacts so that it may form one of the central features in an exhibition on the Vikings in Cheshire entitled “Reap and Tillage” at the Grosvenor Museum in Chester. The exhibition will run from 11th September 2010 to 9th January 2011. The stone will return on 11th January after which it will again be on display in the Church on weekday afternoons.

Gardening in October Gardening by Janet Heath

O

ctober is a good month to move existing plants or plant out new plants as the soil will still be warm from summer and moist which will enable plants to settle in before winter.

Flowering perennials such as Phlox, perennial Geraniums, Yellow Loosestrife Lysimachia punctata or its relative the Chinese Loosestrife Lysimachia clethroides, with wonderful white wavy cone shaped flowers, all spread and can be dug up, split and replanted. Phlox in particular, can become congested and tend not to flower well after a few years. Splitting them and replanting in enriched soil will rejuvenate them. Shrubs can be moved now so if you have a shrub that is in the wrong place, give it a can of water an hour or so before moving, dig it up, being careful to dig up all its root ball. When replanting, dig a hole larger than the root ball, ensure that the soil is loosened all around the planting hole so that the roots will be able to grow out into the surrounding soil. Mix some well rotted manure or planting compost in the soil and if the soil is dry, add a watering can of water to the base of the hole. Backfill with soil, firming in with your fingers (not your boot!), and add another can of water. Roses that are tall can be cut back before winter although the main pruning is usually in March. This will prevent the plant from being rocked in high winds. If the leaves are diseased from blackspot and falling from the rose, remove them as the spores can remain in the ground to re-infect next season. Plant bulbs in October, such as the tiny Iris reticulata, daffodil and tulip bulbs, for flowering next year. Also try hyacinths in pots outside as they will survive outdoors. In my garden a previous owner planted them out in the borders where they come up each year. I pick the blooms to bring into the house for their scent. All the above do well in pots with winter flowering pansies to give colour in winter and spring. Cut out the fruited canes of raspberries and harvest the last apples from trees. Laying turf in October is ideal as the soil below should remain moist to encourage rooting and you will be less likely to walk on the lawn and damage the turf in autumn.
