Description

Well Path Design  – Part III This TIPS&TRICKS is the final installment of a three-part series intended to aid the geoscientist working in Petrel and tasked with providing proposed well paths to a well engineering department for further analysis as part of an exploration or development project. Well planning in Petrel can be done interactively or automatically. automatically. Proposed well paths can be created created interactively by clicking on an object displayed in a 3D window to place design points or automatically by using the well path optimizing program found in the Well path design process dialog window. Proposed well paths can be either standalone standalone or sidetracks of existing wells. Design points can be edited either graphically or through the well trace spreadsheet. spreadsheet. This article discusses the options available for exporting proposed well well data. All forms of well planning in Petrel can only be done in the depth domain.

Export Well Path Design Results In addition to the drilling cost spreadsheet report output shown earlier from the optimizer program you can also export results from the Well path design process to ASCII files for use in other third party applications. Well headers and directional survey reports are exported from the Wells folder in the Input  pane. The best method for exporting data is by right-clicking on a folder and selecting one of the two export functions available in the pop-up window.

To Export the well headers of a well folder: 1. Right-click on a well folder in the Input  pane.

2. Select Export  in the upper region of the pop-up window.

3. In the “Export as”  dialog window: a. Select a file location to save the export file to. Preferably a folder you created somewhere on your workstation. b. Give the file a name that you can identify later. c. Choose Well heads (*.*)  as the Output Type. d. Click Save

4. Select a coordinate reference system for the output X and Y. The default is the last one used in importing or exporting data from the project.

5. The new file is created using Petrel default well header format. The file contains surface locations and header information of all wells in the folder and any sub-folders.

To Export the directional surveys of all wells in a well folder: 1. Right-click on a well folder in the Input  tab. 2. Select Export all wells in folder  in the lower region of the pop-up window.

6. A folder is created in the destination folder you specified for each sub-folder in the well folder. The sub-folder organization of your project is retained in the export. For example, we exported an optimizer run that had 4 realizations each with a different number of platforms that in turn had a different number of wells. The optimizer program organizes these into folders and subfolders in the Input tab of Petrel. This organization is retained in the export folder structure.

7. The exported files are in Petrel default directional survey format.

To Export data for a single well: 1. Right-click on a well name in the Input  pane. 2. Select Export  in the upper region of the pop-up window.

3. In the export dialog window: a. Select the file location on your workstation you want to save the file to. b. Give it an appropriate name that you can easily identify later. c. Select a format to export.

The Irap RMS Well format is basically an X,Y,Z format. Notice that the Z values are in SSTVD. In this example of an onshore well, the Z values are positive and increasing.

The Well design X, Y, Z  format exports only target points you digitized using the Well path design process in Petrel. The Z values are elevation. In this onshore example, they are positive and increasing.

The Well design trajectory transfer  format is an odd format for old Drilling Office software. It is not recommended for anything else.

The Well logs format will export an LAS 2 formatted file of any well logs that may exist in the well. Petrel can create synthetic well logs in proposed wells from 3D model properties.

To Create a Report: Often, it is necessary to generate a report to send to drilling engineers or others responsible for approving the new well. Petrel can produce such a report. 1. Right-click on a well folder in the Input  pane. 2. Select Create new report  in the lower region of the pop-up window.
