ESTIMATE 7,000 - 9,000 USD Lot Sold. Hammer Price with Buyer's Premium: 11,875 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE It would appear that No. 509 is unrecorded, however, No. 510, which also featured a Z balance is recorded in Vaudrey Mercer, Arnold &Son, p. 249 and 289 and Hans Staeger, 100 years of Precision Timekeepers from John Arnold to Arnold &Frodsham, 1763-1862, pp. 339 and 340.

The Z balance was first used in 1791 on Arnold pocket chronometer no. 405/704. For a drawing of the Z balance, see Mercer, the Introduction, p. X. as well as Mercer p. 60. In the second text, it is noted that the balance was used as late as 1818 by John Roger Arnold.

John Roger Arnold, son of John Arnold the great chronometer maker and inventor, was born in 1769 and apprenticed to his father in 1783. He became Free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1796 and in the following year he joined his father in the firm of Arnold &Son. Following the death of John Arnold in 1799, John Roger continued the business on his own becoming Master of the Clockmakers' Company in 1817. Between 1830 and 1840 he went into partnership with Edward John Dent and after his death in 1843 the business was bought by Charles Frodsham.

LITERATURE Exhibition catalogue: Uncommon Watches and Clocks, Snellenburg, J., pp. 8-9.

CATALOGUE NOTE Two similar watches, the Piguet &Meylan 'Allegory of Summer' and 'Allegory of Autumn' have been sold by Sotheby's in recent years. The first was sold in Geneva on 13 November 2007 for CHF 505,000, and the second in Hong Kong on 7 October 2009 for 2,180,000 HKD. A watch from the same series which bears the 'Allegory of Winter' is also in the Patek Philippe Museum, Geneva.

A similar watch from the same series is described and illustrated in Chapuis, A, Montres et Émaux de Genève, Collection H. Wilsdorf, Rolex, 1944, pp.207-209 &pl.41. The firm Piguet &Meylan was formed by Isaac-Daniel Piguet and Philippe Samuel Meylan in 1811. Piguet was born at Le Chenet in 1775. He settled in Geneva and became Burgher in 1812, one year after he had gone into partnership with Philippe Samuel Meylan to undertake the 'manufacture of watches, jewellery and mechanisms of all kinds.' Piguet specialized in complex watches with carillons and clock watches. Meylan was born in le Brassus in 1772 and is credited with adapting 'tongues of sonorous metal for the combs of musical movement suitable for watches and other small objects. He is responsible for the famous magician automaton boxes and barking dog automaton watches.' Piguet &Meylan are particularly known for their watches made for the Chinese Market. As such, decoration was very important to the creation of all their pieces, and they employed some of the best enamel painters to decorate their watches. Examples of their works can be seen in many of the world's foremost collections, including the Patek Philippe Museum, Geneva, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Musée d'Horlogerie, Locle. Jean-Abraham Lissignol (1749-1819), known as Pére Lissignol to distinguish him from his son Abraham, also an enameller in Geneva, was trained by Jean-Marc Roux. As well as painting portrait miniatures, he supplied the Fabrique with plaques for snuff boxes and watch cases. He appears to have specialised in allegorical subjects. In 1806, Père Lissignol wrote eloquently to the Paris authorities (Geneva then being occupied by France) suggesting that the Imperial Court buy enamelled trinkets to encourage the failing trade in Geneva, just as they had bought Lyons silk to help that market recover (Geneva archives).

Brothers Louis-David-Benjamin Oltramare, born 30 August 1781 and Jean-Hugues Oltramare, born 2 February 1786, were both trained as 'monteurs de boîtes en or' (makers of gold watch cases). Coming from a family of artisans with a horological background, they worked together in an informal association and entered a maker's mark as the Frères Oltramare in 1810/11. When Geneva was liberated from French occupation and they re-registered the same mark on 4 November 1815, their workshop was at rue de Coutance 82. The association was dissolved on 31 March 1826.

ESTIMATE 75,000 - 100,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE The brand Hublot was founded in 1980 by Carlo Crocco. His concept was to design a watch that would break with the traditional watchmaking of the past and create a modern classic using diverse materials. For 25 years Hublot's production would remain faithful to this design throughout all of its different collections.

In 2004 Jean-Claude Biver, who had made a name for himself at the helm of Blancpain, succeeded Crocco as the CEO of Hublot. He surprised the luxury watch industry with this move by joining a firm considered by some to be of a lesser caliber. For him it was a perfect fit, as Hublot would offer him the opportunity to realize his vision of a watch that incorporated the fusion of various high-tech metals and materials, which would become the company's trademark.

In a 2006 interview with WatchTime Magazine, Biver stated that his goal was not only to use fusion in the aesthetics of the case and band design, but to go deeper and create new forms of 'mechanical watch technology.... Fusion would be synonymous with the tradition of the future.'

Hublot introduced the 'Bigger Bang' tourbillon in 2006. Three series were made in total: one with a platinum case and black ceramic bezel, another with 18k 'red' gold case with black ceramic bezel (such as the following lot), and a third with black ceramic case and bezel (such as the present lot). Each was produced in a limited series of 18 pieces.

The flying tourbillon carriage with three lightning-bolt-style arms measures 13¼ mm. It functions without ball bearings and is raised 2.80 mm above the bottom base plate, creating the impression that it is suspended in mid air.

ESTIMATE 80,000 - 120,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE Richard Mille began working the watch industry in 1974, however it was not until 2001 that he released the first watch from his own company. Since that time, he has become one of the greatest innovators in terms of technical development, cutting-edge materials and forward-looking style.

Inspired by the perfection found in the Formula-1 racing circuit, Richard Mille creates his innovative and performance-oriented wristwatches using non-traditional materials, such as ceramics, new metallic alloys and carbon fiber compounds. The company does not produce watches with standard metal parts, as many of the gears and pieces that make up the movement are custom-made for individual models.

The current model, the RM003, features several unusual and sophisticated technical innovations, including a movement base plate in carbon nanofiber, torque indicator, variable inertia balance, fast rotating barrel and function selector. All these advanced developments are not simply created to optimize the performance of the watches, but also to enhance their precision and reliability. When combined with the technical elegance of the tourbillon and the usability of the quick-set second time zone, the watch becomes not only a mechanical marvel, but a beautiful and easy-to-use timekeeper.

ESTIMATE 40,000 - 60,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE Released in 2008, Ref. 5450 was made in a limited series of 300 pieces. It followed the first two 'Advanced Research' models by the firm: Ref. 5250, released in 2005, and Ref. 5350, released in 2006.

With the first model, the firm unveiled the Silinvar escape wheel, and the second model supplemented this innovation with a Spiromax hairspring. Ref. 5450 completed this evolution by the addition of Silinvar lever, which transfers energy from the escape wheel to the balance wheel, resulting in the highly efficient Pulsomax escapement.

Originally known for its application to information technology, Silinvar is a semiconductor that is significantly lighter than the traditional steel, transmits energy more efficiently and can be shaped more accurately, making it an ideal material for use in watchmaking.

So that the wearer can admire the complex and cutting-edge Silinvar elements of the movement, Ref. 5450 also features a magnified aperture to the sapphire crystal display back. To this end, the bridge work and wheel train were also altered slightly for increased visibility.

manual wind movement, 18 jewels lapis lazuli dial case back secured by two screws bracelet composed of interlocking ovals with bark finish case, dial, movement and bracelet signed interior length 165 mm

ESTIMATE 5,000 - 7,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE As the Swiss watchmaking world was being upended by the newly developed quartz movements in the early 1970s, a good deal of energy was being devoted to the creation of ultra-thin watches, a technical marvel that have of late fallen flat in their aesthetic appeal. By contrast, Piaget's cutting-edge jewelry pieces from this time period stand out as some of the most timelessly chic from the era.

The 'Esclave' cuff watches, made under the direction of Jean-Claude Gueit in the early 1970s, make use of a variety of gems and stones in creative forms specifically intended to accomodate the curviture of the arm. Unlike a perfectly symmetrical cuff, the present example is slightly wider at the bottom so that it fits comfortably. It also features a vertically-set dial, so the time is easily read when the arm is outstretched.

It is interesting to note that the present model is not signed on the dial, and instead bears a signature only on the case back. This was done out of respect for Prince Faisal and the Saud family, so his image and the family name would not have to share space with the maker's name.

CATALOGUE NOTE The present model, Seamaster XVI, was produced by Omega for a limited period of time to celebrate the Summer Games of the 16th Olympiad in Melbourne, Australia. It is particularly unusual to find an example of this model with a lacquered dial rather than the more common gilt dial. Omega made approximately 100 examples in this special lacquered series.

The Seamaster XVI was created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Omega being the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games. Beginning in the 1932 Los Angeles games, Omega watches were, and still remain, a constant at finish lines during the sporting fortnight.

The emblem seen on the dial and back of this model is the Olympic Cross of Merit, which Omega received in 1952 for their outstanding technical support of the Games.

The Games of the XVI Olympiad were the first to take place in the Southern Hemisphere, which meant they were held in late November and early December - autumn for countries in the Northern Hemisphere.

The host-country Australians showcased their excellence in international competition, including swimmer Murray Rose's three gold medals and runner Betty Cuthbert's three gold medals.

For more information on this model and several illustrations, see Richon, M., Omega: A Journey Through Time, pp.282-283.

ESTIMATE 7,000 - 9,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE During World War II, many watch companies began making massive-sized aviator's watches, similar to the present lot, to answer the increased demand for such pieces. Vacheron Constantin, Wempe, Laco and IWC also produced similar models for both sides of the conflict.

The black dial, dull luminescent numerals and hands, satin-finished case and the long leather strap, big enough to wear on the outside of a flight jacket, all point to the military purpose for this model.

cal. ESTIMATE 5,500 - 7,500 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE In the mid-1950s Breitling produced the Navitimer wristwatch for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). The most notable difference between these early models and later versions is that it was fitted with the Valjoux 72 movement, which was also used in Rolex Daytonas and other chronographs and calendar watches in this era. By the next generation of the model, the movement was changed to one by Venus. Typical of this era, the dial on the present example features the AOPA winged logo rather than the Breitling name.

OMEGA A RARE LARGE STAINLESS STEEL AVIATOR WATCH CIRCA 1938 REF CK 2042

manual wind movement, 15 jewels black dial, luminescent Arabic numerals, luminescent spade hands, subsidiary seconds outer rotating bezel calibrated for 12 hours, extended lugs, snap back case, dial and movement signed diameter 40 mm

ESTIMATE 7,000 - 9,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE Omega created this model, CK 2042, in 1937 for use by aviators who needed to tell time in two different time zones simultaneously. By rotating the bezel, one can read local time on the main dial and home time with the adjusted hours surrounding it. This is the same basic concept of the Rolex GMT-Master.

For more information on this model and an illustration of it, see Richon, M., Omega: A Journey Through Time, p.510.

Recently Omega launched the Omega Museum Collection Pilot watch, which was inspired by this model and features an almost-identical design throughout.

cal. 501 automatic movement, 20 jewels black matte dial, luminescent triangular and dagger indexes combined with Arabic 12, 3, 6, 9, luminescent arrow hands, sweep center seconds double steel and rotating black bezel calibrated for 60 units, screw back case, dial and movement signed diameter 39 mm

ESTIMATE 5,000 - 7,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE Omega launched the Seamaster 300 in 1957 as a direct competitor with Rolex's Submariner, Ref. 6538. Despite the model's name, the Omega was only tested to 200 meters rather than 300, though the name was kept because it was able to withstand pressure beyond most measuring devices of the time.

The present lot comes from the first evolution of the model.

Today, this model is very collectible for its unusual double-bezel design, with a fixed steel and rotating black bezel, as well as its iconic arrow hands.

CATALOGUE NOTE This model, Ref. 3056, is rarely seen in the market. Like the 'Piccolino', Ref. 3055, it is unusual among Rolex chronographs for its small size. Its diameter is 30 millimeters, whereas other chronographs from that time period were generally 34 -36 millimeters in diameter. The two models differ in that Ref. 3055 has a flat case back, whereas the present example has a rounded case back.

PROPERTY FROM THE FAMILY OF THE ORIGINAL OWNER ROLEX A STAINLESS STEEL CHRONOGRAPH WRISTWATCH WITH REGISTERS, TACHOMETER AND TELEMETER CIRCA 1952 REF 6034

cal. 72 manual wind movement, 17 jewels silvered dial, three subsidiary dials for constant seconds, 12-hour and 30-minute registers, telemeter scale in red tracking, tachometer scale in blue tracking chamfered bezel, two round chronograph pushers to the band, screw-down case back case, dial and movement signed stainless steel Rolex buckle serivce paperwork from 1985, 1986, 1998 and 1999 diameter 34 mm

ESTIMATE 20,000 - 30,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE The present lot was originally purchased by Joseph W. Cochran, an amateur race car driver on the California Sport Car Club circuit during the late 1940s and 1950s. At that point, the sport was just gaining recognition and becoming a professional sport rather than simply an amateur hobby.

He would use the watch's chronograph function to time his own races as well as those of this competitors. His car, No. 101, a 1952 Cad-Allard J2 4150cc Roadster, featured the engine of a Cadillac in the body of the smaller and faster Allard.

Cochran's races took him all around California and Nevada and introduced him to Hollywood race enthusiasts, including James Dean and the Gabor sisters. Through these connections, his car was prominently featured in the 1949 Mickey Rooney picture, 'The Big Wheel', a film that put the star behind the wheel on the tracks of the California raceways.

The provenance of the present example is evidence of the direct connection that Rolex watches have always had with sports, and auto racing in particular. Even a decade before the development of the Cosmograph Daytona, drivers were already relying on Rolex chronographs for accurate timing of their events.

The present example, Ref. 6034, figures into the succession of Oyster chronographs Rolex produced from the beginning of the 1950s until the introduction of the Daytona in 1961. Along with other round-button chronographs with three subsidiary dials, such as Ref. 5034, 6234 and 6238, this model was produced in relatively few numbers as a result of its short production period.

For another example of Ref. 6034 with red and blue tracking, see Gobbi, P. &Pucci, P., I Cronografi Rolex: La Leggenda, pp. 230-1, and for other examples of the model, see pp. 232-251, op. cit.

ESTIMATE 100,000 - 150,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE Rolex began production of the Ref. 5036 in the late 1940s as a replacement for the earlier Ref. 4767. ROLEX A STAINLESS STEEL AUTOMATIC SWEEP SECONDS DUAL TIME ZONE WRISTWATCH WITH DATE, 24HOUR INDICATION AND BRACELET MADE FOR THE PERUVIAN AIR FORCE CIRCA 1966 REF 1675 GMT-MASTER

cal. 1570 automatic movement, 26 jewels black dial, luminescent dagger, dot and baton indexes, luminescent Mercedes-style hands, sweep center seconds, gilt printing and tracking, magnified date aperture rotating bezel calibrated for 24 hours with corresponding triangular hand, screw-down crown and back case, dial and movement signed stainless steel Rolex Oyster rivet bracelet with deployant clasp diameter 39 mm

ESTIMATE 20,000 - 30,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE The outside of the back on the present lot has an engraving, 'Fuerza Area Del Peru.'

In the 1960s the Peruvian Air Force bought watches from Rolex for use by their pilots. Almost all of the pieces that have reappeared on the market are Daytona chronographs. Examples of GMT-Masters for the Peruvian Air Force are rarely found.

It is interesting to note that the GMT-Master is a model designed for pilots and is therefore more appropriate for use by an air force than a chronograph.

CATALOGUE NOTE This model, Ref. 5508, was released in 1958 and was one of the last models of the so-called 'James Bond' Submariners. The nickname comes from the fact that models similar to this, without crown guards, were frequently featured in the Bond movies. Today any Submariner without crown guards is referred to as a 'James Bond' model.

ESTIMATE 8,500 - 10,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE This model, Ref. 6202, was released in 1953 and was first marketed as a watch intended for air travelers as it was easy to use the rotating bezel for timing functions. The model was ultimately pulled from production in the early 1960s, as it was seen as redundant when compared to the timing and diving abilities of the Submariner and the GMT-Master lines, both of which were more popular.

ESTIMATE 7,500 - 9,500 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE By the early 1950s, the commercial trans-Atlantic airline industry was at a point where planes were able to take off on one side of the ocean and land on the other in a matter of mere hours. Partly as a result of this, Pan American airlines approached Rolex, and the two companies began working on a watch that could easily tell the hour in two different time zones.

When Ref. 6542, the first GMT-Master, was released in 1954, it became the official timepiece of Pan-Am Airlines. Their pilots found the watch to be a useful tool in the cockpit where many timing calculations were necessary over the duration of the flight. In addition, the simple ability to know what time it was 'back home' was very easy to see with the watch's colorful bezel.

Early examples of the model featured a Bakelite plastic bezel. Over the years, this accent was found to be too fragile and expensive to produce, so the material was changed to a more standard metal bezel insert.

The present example comes from the fourth evolution of the model, where the bezel insert is metal and the seconds hand is not painted white.

ESTIMATE 8,000 - 12,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE This model, Ref. 1680, was launched in 1966 as the first Submariner model to feature a date aperture. Early examples from this reference feature the word 'Submariner' printed in red lettering. Ultimately, the dials were standardized so that all the printing was in white, making examples with the red printing rarer, and thus more desirable.

cal. 3085 automatic nickel lever movement, 27 jewels cream dial, luminescent triangular, dot and baton indexes, magnified date aperture, red secondary hour hand bezel calibrated for 24 hours, screw back and screw-down crown case, dial and movement signed stainless steel Rolex Oyster flip-lock bracelet numbered warranty, tie-tag, box, packaging diameter 39 mm

ESTIMATE 10,500 - 15,500 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE This model, Ref. 16550, was first launched by Rolex in 1985. Originally Rolex offered this new reference with standard black as well as cream dials. Ultimately, they would eliminate this option and sell only the black dial, thus making examples with cream dials, such as the present lot, more collectible.

The present watch features the so-called 'Railway' dial. This designation refers to a dial on which the spaces between the words 'Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified' line up from one line to the next, creating a visual break in the printing. As Rolex re-formatted the printing on the dials, this aspect was lost. Collectors today see such examples as more desirable.

For a similar example of this model with this dial variation, see Skeet, M. &Urul, N., Vintage Rolex Sports Models, p. 86.

ESTIMATE 18,000 - 22,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE In 1974 the movement and dial for this lot were put into case 4048937. As was appropriate of that era, the case number was engraved inside the back of the watch by the factory.

Years later, the movement and dial were re-cased by Rolex in the present case, 4466877, however the original back was retained. Interestingly, the factory then engraved the numbers of the new case on the inside of the old back as well as EX4048937. It is unusual for a watch to have received such complete markings after it has been serviced.

ESTIMATE 8,000 - 12,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE This model, Ref. 1675, was released in 1960 and was initially available in gold, steel and two-tone. Gold GMTMasters were made in smaller production numbers and are rarer than their steel counterparts. For this reason, they are more sought after by collectors.

It is interesting to note that this model, Ref. 1675, was the only sport model originally offered with the Rolex Jubilee bracelet option. For this reason, many examples of this reference still retain these dressier bands.

CATALOGUE NOTE Beginning in the late 1960s, Rolex offered special dials, known as 'exotic' dials, on their Cosmograph Daytona models. Years later, watches with these dials became known as 'Paul Newman' models, as the actor is presumed to have worn one in the 1969 auto racing film 'Winning'.

The 'Paul Newman' dial is characterized by square markers in the chronograph scale and subsidiary dials and the alternating patterning of the coloration. Though widely available at the time, these dials were produced in smaller numbers and are rarer to find.

ESTIMATE 5,000 - 7,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE At the 2007 Basel Fair, Rolex reintroduced the Milgauss model, a tool watch that had been dormant for roughly thirty years. The new model, Ref. 116400, would take much of its refined styling from the conservative-looking Ref. 1019, the last of the vintage Milgauss line.

Originally this model was available in three variations: a white dial and clear sapphire glass, a black dial with clear sapphire glass and a black dial with green sapphire glass (such as the present example).

The new model became an instant hit with collectors who appreciated the technical merits of this anti-magnetic watch as well as the bold design of the orange lightning bolt hand.

ESTIMATE 30,000 - 40,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE Comex (Compagnie Maritime d'Expertise) was founded in 1961, in Marseille, at a time when industrial deep-sea diving did not yet exist. Very soon, however, Comex promoted new technology and became a pioneer in deep diving operations for the offshore oil industry. Today, it has more than 2,000 employees and 800 divers located around the world.

At the end of the 1960s, Comex asked Rolex to create a watch that could sustain the high pressure of deep water dives, as the compressed and saturated air began causing a build-up of pressure in the standard Submariner case, which destroyed the mechanism.

Rolex rapidly came up with a patented solution by installing a one-way pressure release valve on the side of the watch case, beside the 9 o'clock position, that allowed the release of helium from the case. This model would later become known as the Sea-Dweller.

The relationship between Comex and Rolex continues today. One of the last Comex models made was the present one, the Submariner Ref. 16610. These are rather hard to find in the market, as many of them are still in use by their original owners.

Adding to the rarity of the present lot is that fact that it has never been used or worn, and still retains its factory finish and even its protective stickers to the back of the case. As this watch was never officially retailed (it was sold directly from Rolex to Comex) the Attestation paperwork is left 'open', with no retailer's name or stamp.

ESTIMATE 100,000 - 150,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE Patek Philippe launched Ref. 3970 in 1986 and two years into production, modified the design to a screw-down case back and continued production for approximately two years. This water-resistant model was designated 3970E, with the suffix indicating étanche, or waterproof. Production of the model ended in 2004.

Ref. 3970 was created following the success of the exceptional and iconic Ref. 2499. One main difference between the two models is the addition of the leap year indicator to the 3 o'clock subsidiary dial and 24-hour indicator to the 9 o'clock subsidiary dial. The design of the case of Ref. 3970, with its downturned, fluted lugs, is clearly influenced by the form of Ref. 2499.

Ref. 3970 is illustrated in Huber, M. &Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Watches, Vol. 2, Second Edition, pp. 305.

VARIOUS OWNERS PATEK PHILIPPE A FINE AND RARE EARLY 18K YELLOW GOLD HUNTING CASED WATCH WITH ENAMEL SCENES 1850 NO 4735

14''' movement with cylinder escapement, gold cuvette white enamel dial with hairlines, bezel and crystal lacking front cover with a polychrome enamel Swiss mountain scene inhabited by boats and a fisherman, the reverse with a shepardess with a mule tending her flock, both sides framed in champlevé blue enamel with loss with floral medallions case and cuvette signed and numbered Extract from the Archives confirming enamel scenes and sale 30 April 1855 diameter 38 mm

ESTIMATE 8,000 - 12,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE The present lot is an excellent example of a very early moment in the relationship between Antoine-Norbert de Patek and Jean-Adrien Philippe. The two met in 1844, in Paris, and the following year, founded Patek &Cie together. In early 1851, the firm was renamed Patek, Philippe &Cie'.

As the present lot is signed 'Patek Philippe &Co', the most likely scenario as suggested by the Extract is that the movement was completed in 1850. The cuvette was one of the first to be signed with the new company's name, sometime before the recorded date of sale in 1855.

In the early days of the partnership, the company was not satisfied to rest on the laurels of their technical advances, and as such also worked to create pieces of aesthetic beauty. At their display in the 1851 London Universal Exhibition, they advertised 'enamel painting in flowers, landscapes, portraits and historical subjects' alongside their newly patented stem-winding watches.

It is rare to find such an early piece bearing an enamel scene on both covers. Patek Philippe watches from this time period generally do not feature figural scenes. Such pieces are highly sought after and coveted by collectors and curators alike.

Similar watches from this time period are illustrated in Huber, M. &Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Watches, pp. 108111.

ESTIMATE 5,000 - 7,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE The present lot is a good example of Patek Philippe's work to create individually customized piece at the request of important clients. It is interesting to note that while it is not uncommon to see retailer's signatures on the firm's watches, this particular piece was in fact made for the owner of the Brodnax jewelry store. As such, the George Brodnax signatures on the cuvette and movement are in fact personalized signatures for the owner of the watch.

George Taylor Brodnax, Sr. was the owner and president of Brodnax Jewelry, 39 South Main St, Memphis, TN, at the time the largest jewelry store in the South. After the death of George Sr. in 1917, ownership of the firm was passed on to his son, George Taylor Brodnax, Jr. (1900-1939).

The date of manufacture in 1921 suggests that the watch may have been commissioned as a 21st birthday gift to George Jr., as a piece that would evoke the memory of his father and the pride in the business passed down from father to son.

The watch has been held in the possession of descendants of the Brodnax family until this point. Sotheby's is pleased to offer this piece for the first time at auction.

For similar watches from this period, see Huber, M. &Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Watches, p. 162-165.

22''' gilt movement, cam-wheel regulator, 18k gold cuvette white enamel dial customized for Dr. Venancio Labatut, Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds guilloché case with monogram case, dial, cuvette and movement signed Extract confirming sale with monogram 19 May 1904 diameter 56 mm

ESTIMATE 5,000 - 7,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE Watches made by Patek Philippe for the illustrious Brazilian firm of Gondolo &Labouriau, are prized as some of the best examples of the high-quality watches from the turn of the last century.

The present lot is a particularly interesting piece, as it is customized specially for a important client of the firm, Dr. Venancio Labatut. His name appears on the dial where the Patek Philippe signature would normally be, and as such, the maker name is curved over the subsidiary seconds instead. Dr. VH is also engraved on the case back. An 'engraved monogram' is confirmed on the Extract from the Archives.

Watches made for Gondolo are always characterized by movements bearing cam-wheel regulators and 9k gold gear train wheels. The central bridge of these Gondolo watches is frequently engraved 'Pat. Jan 13, 1891', which refers to the American patent for this type of wheel-train bridge.

For a similar movement, see Huber, M. &Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Watches, Second Edition, p. 134, and for more examples made for Chronometro Gondolo, see pp. 145-6 of the same text.

The 1930s and 1940s in particular saw a strong emphasis on square, rectangular and driver's style watches, with experimentation in lug and case design.

A similar watch, Ref. 556, is illustrated In Huber, M. &Banbery, A., Patek Philippe wristwatches. Like the present model, Ref. 555, it bears unusual tubular lugs, however the lugs are faceted rather than round.

ESTIMATE 40,000 - 60,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE Patek Philippe launched Ref. 2526, its first automatic model, in 1953 and ceased production in 1960. It is an iconic reference and highly sought after by collectors for its understated elegance.

The present example stands out as an extraordinary piece within the reference. According to our research, it is the only example to come to the market with the combination of unusual Arabic hours dial, pink gold case and Serpico Y Laino retailer's marks. Sotheby's is pleased to offer this watch for the first time at auction.

The applied Arabic numerals at 9, 12 and 3 o'clock require that the enamel dial be fitted specifically for this configuration, as the index 'feet' are laid out before the enamel is heated and set. According to our research, only two other examples of Ref. 2526 with Arabic hours have come to the market. One of these is cased in yellow gold and is on display at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva.

The Arabic numeral and baton configuration featured on the present lot is one of the rarest options that were available for the dials of Ref. 2526. Other exotic variations included Breguet numerals, diamond indexes, black dials as well as the 'Do Unto Others' dial. While all highly sought after by collectors for their rarity and unusual looks, our research indicates that examples featuring Arabic numerals have come to the market in the smallest quantities.

The Serpico Y Laino retailer's marks on the present example are clearly visible on the dial, case and bracelet. This esteemed Venezuelan retailer sold some of the finest watches by Patek Philippe in the 1940s and 1950s. Pink gold watches were frequently made for the Latin American market, thus it is fitting that the present lot was created for the elite of Caracas. It is estimated that pink gold pieces account for only one in six of the total production for Ref. 2526.

Ref. 2526 features the 12-600AT movement, an engineering marvel which made its debut at the 1953 Basel Fair. As the first automatic movement made by the firm, its debut was delayed until Rolex's 1933 patent for a full-rotation self-winding movement expired. At the time of its release, it was one of the most highly-jeweled calibers for a timeonly watch produced by Patek Philippe, or indeed any firm.

Examples of Ref. 2526 are illustrated in Huber, M. &Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches, pp. 213 and 216-7. Cal. 12-600 is illustrated on p. 214 of the same text.

For examples of various Gay Frères bracelets on Ref. 2526 watches, see Reardon, J., Patek Philippe in America, pp. 168-169.

PROPERTY FROM A DESCENDANT OF THE ORIGINAL OWNER PATEK PHILIPPE A FINE AND RARE LARGE 18K YELLOW GOLD AUTOMATIC PERPETUAL CALENDAR WRISTWATCH WITH MOON-PHASES 1977 REF 3448J MVT 1119486 CASE 332602

cal. 27-460Q movement stamped twice with the seal of Geneva, 37 jewels, 18k rotor apertures for day and date, subsidiary dial indicating date combined with fan-form aperture for moon-phases, outer painted minute track sloped bezel, downturned lugs, snap back case, dial and movement signed 18k Patek Philippe buckle Extract from the Archives confirming sale 22 July 1977, original retail receipt dated 29 Aug 1977 diameter 37 mm

ESTIMATE 70,000 - 90,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE This model, Ref. 3448, was launched in 1962. At that time, it was the only automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch on the market. Ref. 3448 underwent four main evolutions, each introducing a new variation on the design. The present example belongs to the second evolution, produced roughly between 1968 and 1976, which varied from the original 3448 by replacing the painted minute track with a pearled minute track.

The subsequent evolutions are distinguished by their larger calendar numerals, wider-set hour indexes, a return to the painted minute ring, and in the final evolution, a larger bezel in order to accomodate the sapphire crystal. The model was ultimately succeeded by Ref. 3450, produced from 1981 to 1985, which included the leap year indication and some more subtle differences. For an example of Ref. 3450, see lot 203 of this sale.

It is interesting to note the relatively small quantity of watches made in this reference. Only 586 pieces were made in total over the 20 year production period, meaning roughly 30 examples were made each year. As such, Patek Philippe's technicians were able to pay the utmost attention to each piece.

One marker of the artistry that went into Ref. 3448 is the moonphase sector. Each plate is made in solid gold, handenamelled in transluscent blue, set in high temperatures, and polished so that the gold stars and moon shine. As a result, each plate bears slight variations from the next in the placement of the stars and tones of blue, and is one of the most strikingly attractive feature of this exceptional and rare model.

For a discussion of Ref. 3448 and other examples, see Reardon, J., Patek Philippe in America, pp. 232-33. For a similar model, see Huber, M. &Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Vol. 2, pp. 288-289.

ESTIMATE 5,000 - 7,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE Arguably the greatest sporting model produced by Patek Philippe, the Nautilus has become one of the company's most iconic wristwatches. Gerald Genta, the master watchmaker of the eponymous watch firm, made the original drawings for the patented Nautilus case design.

The original concept for the model was inspired by a ship's porthole window. During the same period, he also created two other celebrated designs: the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet and the iconic engraved bezel Bulgari watch. Genta's design is as practical as it is aesthetically appealing: the Nautilus boasts water-resistance even when the crown is pulled out in the setting position.

Various Nautilus models are illustrated in Huber, M., &Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches, Vol. II, Second Edition, p. 77.

PROPERTY OF THE ORIGINAL OWNER PATEK PHILIPPE A FINE AND RARE 18K YELLOW GOLD AUTOMATIC PERPETUAL CALENDAR WRISTWATCH WITH RED DOT LEAP-YEAR INDICATION AND MOON-PHASES, RETAILED BY BEYER 1982 REF 3450 MVT 1119604 CASE 2788651

ESTIMATE 150,000 - 250,000 USD

CATALOGUE NOTE Production of reference 3450 began in 1981 and ceased in 1985. In total, only 244 examples were made. Its design marks an evolution from its predecessor, Ref. 3448. For an example of this model, see lot 184 in this sale.

The aperture for leap year indication on Ref. 3450 is the most apparent difference between the present model and Ref. 3448. In the first series of the reference, to which the present example belongs, the leap year indicator was Arabic numerals with a red dot appearing on the leap year. The second series, introduced in the second year of production, featured Roman numerals for each year, including the leap year.

According to our research, only ten examples of Ref. 3450 have come to the market featuring this highly sought after red dot leap year indication. Of these, the present example is the only piece to feature a Beyer retailer's signature on the dial.

Based in Zurich, Beyer Chronometrie boasts one of the strongest relationships with Patek Philippe of any watch retailer having worked together since 1842. The family-owned watch boutique has sold only the highest grade pieces for more than 250 years, Patek Philippe being one of the anchors of their business for their high quality timepieces and innovation. As a mark of their close association, the longest collaboration for both firms, Patek Philippe produced the first series of the famed Ref. 3940 automatic perpetual calendar watch was made as a special edition of 25 pieces for Beyer in 1985.

In addition to the leap year indication, it is interesting to note the subtle case design differences between Ref. 3448 and Ref. 3450. The Ref. 3450 case, made by Favre &Perret of La Chaux-de-Fonds, features a thicker bezel than the 3448, as well as a sapphire crystal. In addition, the Ref. 3450's snap case back is some 2mm smaller than that of the Ref. 3448.

For an example of this reference, see Huber, M. &Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches, pp. 290-291.
