CHAPTER 1 BACKGROUNDS AND PROBLEM OF STUDY
INTRODUCTION Every human being living here in the mother Earth has responsibility to do, that responsibility is to protect the nature. This place is necessary to all children of God because this is created by Almighty God Jesus Christ. Philippines is one of the popular places in Asia. This country has millions of Filipino citizens who different from each other. Some are living in different islands and distant ethnics and also their culture. Therefore, the environment in which millions of people exist is much important. This country has environmental problem, but not only here, maybe in the whole world. This problem is a global concern; this has no limits and boundaries. One of the main causes is the improper management of waste. Disposal of wastes are the major cause of population in this world. There is no permanent thing in this world also an environmental problem that has no solution. The only thing is, men can reduce and to control the waste generally by proper awareness and right practices. Managing of wastes is a process of combining all garbage to their proper places, it is also an act of gathering materials, identify where it belongs. Removing waste is the one chore people do in their house or surrounding to avoid sickness. Managing of waste is a way for safety, and to avoid unnecessary thing that will be set to everyone. The proper gathering of waste is identified and man should divide the garbage in Nonbiodegradable and Biodegradable. This is called segregation, it refers on waste that is
an act of process of segregating or scattered things that separated into a group of garbage, these is also los of something valuable that occurs because of too much of it, or maybe it is being used in the way that is not necessary or effectively. Being aware on waste is intelligent act of person, who knows the process of doing the right way of managing. This awareness makes everyone be safe and stay healthy. Every people have a good hearts to take care of their surroundings. Every day they clean the front of their house and their children teach them to become aware to everything which includes waste. These children are the students; in school and house are the first places why every student has manners. In this two places are where students learn. Many students of Santa Cruz East Central School tackle concerns and issues on waste disposal. They do segregation of wastes where students learned more to manage waste. Some students insolate the waste to find ways to reduce and to avoid unimportant waste. This custom of students here in this school is important for properly disposing of much amount of garbage that they remove in surroundings of their schools. When it says segregation the students do associated or dividing the waste into two the wet and dry also known non biodegradable and biodegradable. Segregating is the first step of waste management of Elementary students because it links towards their awareness in proper gathering and disposing of different garbage on waste. Managing waste and giving time to clean the school are performed after the class in the afternoon. Sometimes they do the time management to manage or to divide their time to do the school's activities and at home. Elementary students and teachers of this school have their own responsibilities being student, teacher, daughter
and son to their parents and also of their environment. In this research the researcher will observes the Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School located in Barangay Lapu-lapu, Santa Cruz, Marinduque. The writer observes the students are throwing the garbage in proper and improper wasting. The researcher also saw that elementary students are aware on waste but there are some students are not aware on their waste and do not care. Many of the students in the Public school of Santa Cruz East Central School do segregation of waste and they also recycled their waste to make a new thing. They have respect in nature and are responsible but there are some students who are not. The researcher noticed that these elementary students do their program by cleaning every morning before their class and ceremony.
In the light of this observation the researcher would like to determine the Awareness on Waste Management Program of Elementary Teachers and Students of Santa Cruz East Central School.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Specifically the researcher would like to seek answers of the following. 1. What are the ways of segregation on waste of Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School?
2. How aware are the Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School on Waste Management Program?
3. What are the problems encountered by the Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School on waste?
4. What intervention can be offered as the result of this study?
ASSUMPTION The researcher assumed that the Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School are aware of the Waste Management Program.
SIGNIFICACE OF THE STUDY This research is very significant point in the life of every student, to every researcher, and also to the future researcher. This will give additional information about the Waste Management Program.
To the Teachers. They will be serving as guide to every student in their schools
to manage their waste.
To the Students. This will be enlightened on the progress being undergone on Waste Management and to be aware in their waste.
To the Community. They will know that MI students have the proper awareness on waste management program to avoid sickness and that this study will help them realize the importance of Waste Management.
To the Future Researchers. This will give them an update and useful information about in this study focused on awareness of every students on Waste Management Program.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY This study is will be focus only on awareness on Waste Management Program of Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School. This research is limited on Waste Management Program. This research will be conducted on the second semester of doing Practical Research I school year 20162017 in Malindig Institute Foundation Incorporated. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK Awareness is the way for the safety and to avoid sickness. Being aware on waste
of every teachers and students makes healthy life. Management of waste is one of the greater challenges for development all over the world. It is not only because of solid waste management impact on the environmental or health, but poor implementations of solid waste management hinder the nation progress towards waste. The conceptual issues of this study will include waste management practices to mitigate its impact on environmental and socio economic development and assess the impact of solid waste management on the environment. Furthermore, the study focused on Awareness of Elementary teachers and students on Waste Management Program of Santa Cruz East Central School. This is the part of conceptual framework of this research.
THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK According to Keiski about Evolution of Waste Theory this theory Waste Management represent more in depth account of the domain and contains conceptual analysis of wastes, the activity upon waste, and a holistic view of the goals of waste management. Waste Management theory is founded on the expectation that waste management is to prevent waste causing harm to human health and environment. The proper definition of waste is crucial to constructing sustainable agenda of waste management. It is largely the case that current legislation attends to existing waste. Definition emerging from this condition may, however, conflict with the goals of waste prevention, because something that already exists cannot be prevented from
arising. When materials are assigned the label of waste, it will be treated as such; consequently, despite its explicit wish of waste prevention, implicitly, legislation essentially amasses waste. Therefore, new, dynamic definition of waste and waste management must be sought, which can explain why waste is created and can offer an intrinsic solution for the problem. A radically new approach, based on object-oriented modeling languages, is presented to define the key concept of waste management.

CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE This chapter presents the related foreign and local literature and also local and foreign studies.
Foreign Literature In the technical note the term waste is use to include all non liquid waste generated by human activity and a range of solid waste materials resulting from the disaster, such as plastics, water bottles, an packaging from other emergency supplies, ruble resulting from the disaster; mud and slurry deposited by the natural disaster and Allen trees and rocks districting transport and communication. Other specialist waste such as medical waste from hospitals and toxic waste from industry, will also need to be dealt with urgently but they are not covered by this technical notes (World health organization,2011) According to Chandrappa, Ramesha, Brown, and Jeff. Waste was already a problem long before water and air pollution issues attracted public attention. Historically the problem associated with solid waste can be dated back to prehistoric days. Due to the invention of new products, technologies and services the quantity and quality of the waste have changed over the years. Waste characteristics not only depend on income, culture and geography but also on a society's economy and, situations like disasters that affect that economy. There was tremendous industrial activity in Europe during the industrial revolution. The twentieth century is recognized as the American Century and the twenty-first century is recognized as the Asian Century in which everyone wants to earn ‘as much as possible’. After Asia the currently developing Africa could next take the center stage. With transitions in their economies many countries have also witnessed an explosion of waste quantities.
Waste problems and approaches to tackling them vary from country to country. For example, while efforts are made to collect and dispose hospital waste through separate mechanisms in India it is burnt together with municipal solid waste in Sweden. While trans-boundary movement of waste has been addressed in numerous international agreements, it still reaches developing countries in many forms. While thousands of people depend on waste for their livelihood throughout the world, many others face problems due to poor waste management.
In this context solid waste has not remained an issue to be tackled by the local urban bodies alone. It has become a subject of importance for engineers as well as doctors, psychologist, economists, and climate scientists and any others. There are huge changes in waste management in different parts of the world at different times in history. To address these issues, an effort has been made by the authors to combine their experience and bring together a new text book on the theory and practice of the subject covering the important relevant literature at the same time.
Local Literature There are many stringent regulations governing the treatments and disposal of waste in the United kingdom both onshore and offshore and most other countries as well facilities involve in waste transfer and treatment requires license and all personal who work at facilities require the proper kind of training while hazardous waste or
chemical will disposed in coordination with concerned government agencies according to prescribed method. The Local government is responsible for collecting reusable, recyclable and non biodegradable waste material from the material recovery facilities. Collecting or segregated solid waste is scheduled per barangay.(Saley,2012)
The municipal council enacted an ordinance establishing waste management also known as "Perkash fashura Ordinance Na Isadaga" The Ordinance Prohibits dumpling of garbage anywhere other than those recognize established garbage facilities dumping of unclean and un segregate wasted at the resumption center /facilities discharging of human feces along the creeks and river throwing of waste in creeks river public places such as roads, sidewalks and established and burning of garbage particularly non biodegradable waste. It also requires residents to practices segregation of waste at source. Readable solid waste such as bottles, plastic, cellophanes and paper shall be brought to the Barangay materials recovery facility duty segregate or directly to the agent buyers non recyclable material and special solid waste will be brought to the material recovery facilities MSWM in Mysore city is not satisfactory based on municipal solid waste management and handling rules 2000 (Chandra, et al, 2009) SYNTHESIS This foreign and local literature of the researcher is appropriate to this study because these literatures characterized the different waste and where these waste
should be dumped, treated, recycled or burned.
Foreign study A detailed case about Solid Waste Management (SWM) the investigation was made regarding the methods of practices associated with sources quantity generated collection, transportation storage treatment and disposal of waste in Mysore city .this data concerning to Waste Management (WM) in Mysore was obtained through questionnaire individual field visit interacting with people and athletic record of municipal cooperation. Photographic evidence were also made about generation storage collection transportation treatment and disposal waste .this study reveals that the present system of that goes with the handling of waste that can often but dangerous if not handle properly . Waste Management facilities also need to be able to respond quickly to emergency situation. By their very nature there is rarely any warning that an emergency is about to occur. For the reason emergency response team need to be on standby every hour of everyday and every day of year. Waste management disposal and treatment can originated from both domestic and industrial source.(Rose 2009)
The study was conducted in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh in India. Hospitals/nursing homes and private medical practitioners in urban as well as rural areas and those from the private as well as the government sector were covered. Information on (a) awareness of bio-medical waste management rules, (b) training
undertaken and (c) practices with respect to segregation, use of colour coding, sharps management, access to common waste management facilities and disposal was collected. Awareness of Bio-medical Waste Management Rules was better among hospital staff in comparison with private medical practitioners and awareness was marginally higher among those in urban areas in comparison with those in rural areas. Training gained momentum only after the dead-line for compliance was over. Segregation and use of colour codes revealed gaps, which need correction. About 70% of the healthcare facilities used a needle cutter/destroyer for sharps management. Access to Common Waste Management facilities was low at about 35%. Dumping biomedical waste on the roads outside the hospital is still prevalent and access to Common Waste facilities is still limited. Surveillance, monitoring and penal machinery was found to be deficient and these require strengthening to improve compliance with the Bio-medical Waste Management Rules and to safeguard the health of employees, patients and communities.( Hanumantha Rao, 2008 )
Local Study The study aimed to assess the waste management practices of LPU-B. Specifically, it determined the level of effectiveness of Waste Management Practices of LPU-B in terms of: collection strategies, disposal and recovery and processing of waste materials; determined the problems encountered on waste disposal practices tested the significant difference on Waste Management Practices in LPU-B and finally, proposed an action plan that will improve the Waste Management Practices of
LPU-B.
This research utilized descriptive method of research. The descriptive
research is also known as statistical research that describes data and characteristic about what practices, level of effectiveness and recovery and processing. The respondents of the study were the staff and heads of different offices/department. One hundred and one (101) respondents were chosen randomly and purposively. The researchers used a questionnaire as the main gathering instrument. The researchers concluded that waste management practices of LPU-Bwas effective in terms of collection, disposable, recovery and processing as perceived by the respondents. Problems occurred specifically that disposal areas of waste materials were not strategically located. Moreover, means of recovering and reusing such waste were not strictly implemented. (Carlo M. Punongbayan, Sheena P. Abu, MarrielDanise P. Arago, Michelle G. Caponpon, Alyssa Marie C. Geron, Maela P. Leyesa, Jennie Margaret Apritado, Abigail Manzano, 2014 )
This is other study that highlights the result of the study that conducted to analyze the waste management practices of the waste generator and extent of their compliance with the Republic Act 9003, otherwise known as the ecological solid waste management Act of 200 the study was conducted in Bacolod City Philippines in 2007. The finding of the study serves as faces in developing a hand book on solid waste management (Bacollados 2010) The experience and practices of house hold waste management of people in the
Barangay (village) in Manila PH are documented. the data were gathered through as interview with households members using open-ended the respondents segregate there waste into PET bottles, glass bottles & other waste (mixed waste) .some household respondents said that possible that the dumpling in certain areas caused the degree fever suffered by some of their family member .Most of the respondents do to collect of disposal is the responsibility of government. The result of the study showed that R.A 9003 also known as Ecological Solid Waste Management act 2000 is not fully implemented in Metro Manila (Bernardo 2008).
Synthesis The foreign and local studies provide as they proposed questionnaire administration, open-ended evidence and photographic evidences. These are the research instruments investigators will employ on.
CHAPTER 3 METHODOLOGY This chapter presents the research design, research locale, research instruments
and the participants of the study.
RESEARCH DESIGN Qualitative descriptive research method is a research type that puts premium or high value of peoples thinking or point of view condition by their personal traits and has no number; this method is more on verbal data and bounds of words and visuals. And also this method was the most appropriate in this study in describing the Awareness on Solid Waste Management Program of Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School.
PARTICIPANTS OF THE STUDY The participants of the researcher in this study are the Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School.
RESEARCH LOCALE This study is located only in Barangay Lapu-lapu, Santa Cruz Marinduque in the public school of Santa Cruz East Central School.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT The researcher employed and used the Questionnaire and Interview. The writer will use questionnaire as the main source to gather the data. In the order will use the inquiry to gathering information in the right or in the possible time. The researcher believed that these two kinds of instruments appropriate in this study can be convent combined it cause of the nature of the problem. The researcher also used interview to determine the Awareness on Waste Management Program of Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School.

CHAPTER 4 FINDINGS, PREPERATION AND INTERPRETATION This chapter presents the findings in paragraph forms. The interpretation analyses of findings are supported with visuals that can be found in the appendices. The
findings are the answers to the following statement of the problem.
Problem no.1: What are the ways of segregation on waste of Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School?
In a way that based on Waste Management Program as stated by the participants the ways they do is by separating biodegradable from non-biodegradable waste, they practice proper waste disposal, some categorize or determine which goes to wet and dry bin then dividing plastics, papers and bottles; also they will recycle materials that can be used again. Some responses throwing their garbage in right places and they have three trashcan for their waste; every classrooms in this school has three trashcan for effective ways of wasting and so that the students be aware of identifying where their waste belong in three trashcan; one for paper wastes, the other for the plastic or bottles wastes and the other one for grass wastes. They have compost pit to dispose their wastes and also they put it there in addition allowed to decompose or burned. These are the ways of segregation on waste in this school.
Data Analysis As shown in the responses the following segregation on waste were documented; 1. Separating biodegradable from non-biodegradable waste. 2. Categorize or determine which goes to wet and dry bin. 3. Dividing plastics, papers and bottles. 4. Recycling materials. 5. Three trashcans will provide one for papers, for plastic or
bottles and for grass wastes for composting or to dispose’ These segregation practices conformed to Bernardo (2008) description that the practices and experience of household Waste Management of people in the Barangay (village) in Manila, Philippines are documented through interview with household member using open-ended the respondents segregate the waste into PET bottles, glass bottles and otherwise (mixed waste). Most of the respondents do to collect of disposal is the responsibility of government. The result of the study showed that R.A 9003 also known as Ecological Solid Waste Management Act 2000.
Problem no. 2: How aware are the Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School on Waste Management Program?
As described by the participants on Waste Management Program they are much aware both teachers and students. By attending seminars or meeting, training about waste that can be aware and tackle in their class, properly handling of waste and to have compost pit for biodegradable and non-biodegradable because of their awareness they did this also avoid having floods, sickness, and other sufferings. In awareness they clean their surroundings every day. In conformity with participants this program gives an idea to people of where their waste right to throw away. Train them by disposing wastes properly, and their maintain cleanliness at home, schools and community.
Data Analysis
As describe by preceding paragraph teachers and students alike are very much aware of Santa Cruz East Central School waste management. They claim that they help in nature or environment, also to avoid having floods, sickness, and suffering. The proposition by Hanumantha Rao (2008) awareness of Bio-medical Waste Management Rules was better among Hospital staff in comparison with private medical practitioner and awareness was marginally higher among those urban areas in comparison with those rural areas. Training gained momentum only after deadline for compliance was over. Segregation and use of color codes revealed gaps, which need correction information on; awareness of Bio-medical Waste Management, training undertaken and practices with respect to segregation. Although the setting defers as that Hanumantha and this thesis speaks about school system, parallelisms are drawn as the level of Awareness of Waste Management brings benefits.
Problem no. 3: What are the problems encountered by the Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School on waste?
The participants revealed that the problems they encountered are: 1. The pupils have no discipline they throw and scatter their garbage anywhere. 2. The pupils do not use proper waste segregation and did not follow their teachers to what they say. 3. Did not cleaning their surroundings. 4. It’s difficult to other pupils to understand the meaning of biodegradable and
non-biodegradable that’s why they don’t know what to do. 5. Pupils do not care even their surroundings is dirty, they not clean it because of their attitudes. 6. The use of polymers being widespread, difficulty and expense of sorting, collection, cleaning and reprocessing. 7. Throwing the waste in river, seas or anywhere that will cause flood to lower areas of the Barangay. 8. And improper handling of waste that the one cause of having sickness, suffer and bad smell that sometimes they can’t breathe.
Data Analysis The following problems are explained in the preceding exposition and are this divided into following categories;
Behavioral- the behavior of pupils affect Waste Management some are disobedient they just throw waste anywhere; they have no motivation to segregate wastes.
Low Intelligences- pupils with low level of understanding do not understand what is biodegradable and what is not.
Problem no. 4: What intervention can be offered as the result of this study?
The fourth problem is answered by the participants as intervention can be offered; ¹full implementation of the (WOW) War on Waste by giving seminars or
meeting about Waste management, ²having rules and signs for proper segregation of waste, inviting a resource person regarding this program, ³proper discipline among of all us no matter what kind of intervention, fourth it depend on people, giving tips or advice and reminds every people, teachers, students to always do proper wasting. Individual most follow the Waste Management and support the campaign for environmental awareness “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. Having plastic bags inside classroom to throw their waste for biodegradable and non-biodegradable; also; recycling or recycle the waste material is also help. In addition compost pit and separate the waste that decomposed and disposed should be maintained this are the best and effective intervention to offer.
Data Analysis Intervention can be designed such as; ¹full implementation of WOW or War on Waste via seminars or meeting, ²also rules and signs must be displayed, ³discipline regarding or Waste Management must be impose in addition of individual support for environmental awareness “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. Depending on the statement or stated by Saley (2012) offered some tips, practices on the Local Government, he disclosed his responsible for collecting reusable, recyclable and non-biodegradable waste materials from the material recovery facilities. Collecting or segregated Solid waste is scheduled per Barangay.
CHAPTER 5 SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION This
chapter
presents
the
summary of findings, conclusion
and
recommendation.
Summary of findings In Santa Cruz East Central School every teachers and students are have ways on Waste Management Program such as doing separating biodegradable from non-
biodegradable, some determine which goes to wet and dry bin, then dividing plastics, papers, and bottles, they also recycling materials to have a new product. In this school and classrooms has three trashcans will provided one for paper waste, one for plastic or bottle wastes and one for grass wastes for composed. The both teachers and students are very much aware in this program, by awareness they attending seminars or meetings, trainings and they can help in their nature to stay clean. From program on waste they learned more about in garbage which includes Green and clean program, properly handling of waste, and having compost pit for biodegradable and nonbiodegradable. In awareness they avoid sickness, or suffer; the participants’ encountered problems involve behavior of pupils affect waste management, some disobedient they just throw waste anywhere, no motivation to segregate waste, low intelligence to understand what is biodegradable or what is not and have no discipline. The intervention can be designed such as full implementation on WOW or war on waste via seminars, trainings, giving rules and signs, having discipline regarding Waste Management must be impose in addition of individual support for environmental awareness on “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. Conclusion Based from result of this study it is concluded that Elementary teachers and students of Santa Cruz East Central School are very much aware on Waste Management Program.
Recommendation
Based on the foregoing conclusion it is recommended that; To the (DepEd) Department of Education 1.1 To maintain the program on waste management from every school. 1.2 Develop both teachers and students by giving seminars or practices in this program.
To the Participants 2.1 Follow their teachers and the rules of waste management program. 2.2 Establish their awareness and keep doing proper ways on segregation of waste.

This research attempts to describe the situation and condition of Waste Management Program of Santa Cruz East Central School that Elementary teachers and students are very much aware. This study used qualitative descriptive research method that more on verbal data and visuals. The participants are composed of teachers and students of public school vis-a-vis their surroundings and nature. Using instruments such as Questionnaire and Interview as primary data and guide gathering on fact stand outs in the findings there are problems they encountered by the participants including lack of discipline of pupils, throwing their garbage in improper handling and way of waste etc. there are the ways on segregation of waste they did proper disposal, dividing biodegradable from non-biodegradable wastes, and they are aware in this program. By this program the participants learned all about on waste includes Green and Clean
Program, proper disposing by giving Compost pit for wet and dry. Managing and segregating is the step or way to reduce the garbage. In awareness they can avoid sick, global warming and your mind think the better way to do like recycling materials to have new things, reduce and reuse.
