Installation Computer Requirements • Pentium IV 2GHz • 512MB – 1GB RAM • 685MB total disk space •  Additional 2GB free disk space • 128-256MB OpenGL compliant 3D video card (for example nVidia Geforce 4 MX) with an appropriate OpenGL driver • 3-button generic mouse with wheel • Screen resolution 1280 x 1024 • CD-ROM drive • Parallel/USB port for dongle/network connection for FLEXlm floating licence server • Microsoft Internet Explorer® 6 (or later)

Installing the Software For information on installing Vulcan, refer to the Installation Notes on the CD. 1 Before installing Vulcan™ 8.0, close any other applications open on your computer. 2 Insert the installation disc into your disc drive, and follow the on-screen instructions. 3 If the install CD disc does not run automatically, double-click on My Computer and right-click on the CD-ROM icon or name and select Autoplay .

Prior to installation, your environment variables need to be set and the correct amount of swap space/virtual memory needs to be allocated.

 Vulcan Support  Vulcan Online Help  Vulcan Help provides access to product documentation and instructional content, which is referenced throughout this user guide. Vulcan Help is available by double-clicking the  Vulcan Help icon (placed on your desktop as part of the installation).

Once in Vulcan, the Help pages can be accessed using one of the following methods: • Pressing the [F1] key. • Selecting the Start Vulcan Help icon from the Application Area (displayed next to the  Vulcan Start button). Help button

 Vulcan Users Area  The Users Area offers many useful resources, including the latest Vulcan service pack, a comprehensive FAQ section, and an online form for reporting errors or making suggestions to our Vulcan development team.  Vulcan service packs are released when fixes for known issues and critical updates are made. Primary contacts at each mine site are notified when a new service pack is available for download from www.maptek.com or ftp sites ftp.maptek.com and ftp.maptek.co.uk. Licensing  Activate the Software When starting Vulcan for the first time, you will need to run the Licence Administrator for the purpose of setting a path to a licence file.  There are two types of licences: • Node-locked - Licence key with matching licence files. • Floating - Licence key on a server machine that contains multiple licences. 1 Start Vulcan by double-clicking the Vulcan 8.0 icon on your desktop. 2 On the Vulcan 3D Software dialog box, click the Licence Administrator button.

Installing a Network Licence FLEXnet Publisher is the third party software that Maptek uses to allow licence sharing.  The primary contact at your site will be informed (via e-mail) if a FLEXnet Publisher server is required when a licence file is sent.

Installing a FLEXnet Publisher Licence: 1 Log in to your computer as an administrator. 2 Close any other applications that are open on your computer. 3 Insert the installation disc into your disc drive. 4 Select Install Vulcan™ and drivers. 5 Select Install Network Licence.

 Vulcan Workbench When starting Vulcan, you will need to select a Vulcan Work Area and an application to open your work area.

Envisage Envisage provides a full 3D environment for the design and digitising of lines, polygons, points and text. Extensive string editing and manipulating options are part of the core Envisage system. Included are tools to apply symbols, primitives and line styles to the original string data.

Isis Isis is the interactive database editor used in conjunction with Vulcan user-defined databases. In addition, Isis is used to maintain and edit drillhole, composite, grade control, and geotechnical databases.

Plot Utility  The Plotting Utility enables you to preview single or multiple plots, zoom in or out of areas of interest, print selected subsets of the plot and print multiple plots using the same page and printer settings.  Viewing Data When Envisage is started, a work area must be selected. 1 Start Vulcan. 2 Double-click on Browse. 3 Browse to the location of your data and select a folder to open. 4 Click OK . •  The folder will appear in the work area box. Any directories that are opened will remain in the work area until manually deleted. •  To delete a directory, right-click on the folder and select Remove from History  or Remove all to delete the entire list. •  The work area history is stored in a file called .vlaunchpref, which is located under C:\Documents and Settings\User Name.

User Interface  The Vulcan Workbench consists of the following menu options: File, Window, Tools and Help. These menu options are accessible from all applications (Envisage, Isis, and Plotting Utility); however, each application’s File menu contains unique options.  The following image shows the Envisage work area with its various elements. Triangulations and Design Data Structure  Triangulations are stored as separate files with a .00t extension. As separate files, they can be moved and copied in the same manner as copying any windows file. Design data (such as lines and polygons) is stored within layers in a design database.  There are two windows files associated with each design database, .dgd.isis and .dgd.isix.  All of the data is stored in the .dgd.isis file, but it is indexed by the .dgd.isix file. Both files must be in the working directory before Envisage can access the design data. Layers are located within the design database. They do not have their own file extension; therefore they can not be manipulated in the Windows environment. It is possible to transfer layers between design databases or to other users using Envisage menu options. Loading Data  To load layers, triangulations and other types of data in Envisage, use one of the following methods: • Using the Vulcan Explorer window: • Double-click on a file. • Drag and drop a file into the Primary window. • Right-click on a file and select Load. •  To load multiple files use [SHIFT] (for multiple, consecutive files) and [CTRL] (for multiple, non-consecutive files) to select, right-click and select Load. • Click the Open icon on the Standard toolbar.
