If you like this tutorial, please write a comment or a suggestion in the "Suggestions" section. Thanks How to create a "PinScreen" (I know this script do just the same. If you want to learn how to do this without the script, continue reading)

We can create a pinscreen with not too much steps. We need to build our displacement map and apply to a plane, no more. The steps for getting a correct displacement map are the next. 1.- Look for the 3D model you want to use. In this case I will use this face.

This face has been downloaded from the free stuff of 3D Cafe (www.3dcafe.com)

2.- Crate a frontal camera as in the next picture.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial5_en.htm (1 of 21)25/10/2006 0.15.41

Cómo crear un sistema de desplazamiento

3.- Using the measuring tool "Tape" measure the distances: 1.- from the camera to the nearest point of the face (the nose); and 2.- from the camera to the most distant point of the head (the source of the ear).

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial5_en.htm (2 of 21)25/10/2006 0.15.41

Cómo crear un sistema de desplazamiento

4.- With these measures, go to the "Render Scene" window and enter in the "Render Elements" flange.

5.- There, add the "Z Depth" as render element and set it up with the two distances get before with the "Tape" tool.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial5_en.htm (3 of 21)25/10/2006 0.15.41

6.- Launch the render. You must get something similar to this. If the Z Depth picture is OK render it with a big resolution (2000 x 2000 in this case). Just save the final "Z Depth" image in TIF format, and with no compresion.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial5_en.htm (4 of 21)25/10/2006 0.15.41

7.- Open the image in Photoshop and apply the "Mosaic..." filter of the "Pixelate" group.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial5_en.htm (5 of 21)25/10/2006 0.15.41

8.- Use a cell size of 19 pixels, that is a good value for this example.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial5_en.htm (6 of 21)25/10/2006 0.15.41

9.- Create a new document with the previous mosaic's cells size (19x19).

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial5_en.htm (7 of 21)25/10/2006 0.15.41

10.- With the "Elliptical Marquee Tool" create a circle saving a margin pixel in each four sides and use the "Paint Bucket Tool" for filling it with black.

11.- Select the entire image and enter in the "Define Pattern..." options, into the Edit menu. That way we create a new pattern that will be tiled over the "Z Depth" image imported from MAX.

12.- Enter a descriptive name.

13.- Return to the "Z Depth" image and create a new layer over the original background.

14.- Fill the new layer with the pattern just created.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial5_en.htm (10 of 21)25/10/2006 0.15.41

We will get something like this.

15.- Invert the colors of the new layer.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial5_en.htm (11 of 21)25/10/2006 0.15.41

16.- The pattern will be like below.

17.- Now, change the blending mode of the new layer to "Multiply". We will see the bottom image (the "Z" face) thought the white zones.

18.- This could be a valid displacement map, but we need "pins" in the black zone too. We can get them modifying the darker parameter of the curves. This way the brightest gray dots will be similar and the darkest ones will go brighter.

22.- Drag and drop the new material over the "none" button of the "Texmap", into the RayDisplacementMod's Common params. Select "instance" and set the parameters up like the shown below: * 2D mapping (landscape): suitable mapping for a plane. * Amount: amount of displacement. For a higher value, a taller displacement. * Resolution: resolution of the mesh. In this case must be very high for representing all the details of the original image. * Tigh bounds: smooth the bounds to avoid possible problems.

WARNING: if you have problems with this method, you can use the "3D mapping", adding a high value in "Face subdivs" (512 or 1024).

23.- Select the VRay as render engine, "Adaptive subdivision" as antialiasing method in the flange "VRay:: Image sampler (Antialiasing)" and if we want, a G.I. effect (shown in the Tutorial 1).

Job finished! But... What happened? We have made a good model, worked in the illumination setup... but there is anything sating this is a C.G. picture. Many times the problem is we want to see the first G.I render and we don't have care of our materials. In this tutorial, we will create many basic materials very useful explaining step by step what to do. This materials are plastic, wood, chromed metal, glass, metallic paint, water and velvet. We will use VRay, but this tutorial can be followed by another render engine users, as finalRender, Brazil or MentalRay. To get advanced of this tutorial, we must know many concepts: ● ●

Color: chromatic shade of an object. We can use a only color, or a bitmap. Specular highlights: bounce of the light come from a luminous emitter. The rougher (surface) the refracter (light over it). The most used are the Blinn (plastic, wood, almost every material), Anisotropic (CDs, or similar) and Multi-Layer (more attractive). Opacity: level of transparency of an object. It can be configured with a value (%) or with a bitmap. Reflexion: feature of many object to reflect the light. It can be set up with a percentage, and the glossiness. Refraction: feature of the transparent materials or translucent to change the trajectory of the photons which pass through it, distorting the image seen through them. The amount of variation of the trajectory is determined by the Index of Refraction (IOR).

Once explained this concepts, and before to start the "nice" part, we are going to see how to do a very useful effect which we will use in almost all the materials: the "Fresnel reflection". The "Fresnel reflection" is a kind of bounce of the light which only works in the perpendicular parts of the objects (with the camera). Is the realest for plastics, glasses, porcelain, etc. To do this effect is more or less easy:

1. Add to the "Reflection" a "Falloff" map.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6_en.htm (1 of 29)25/10/2006 0.16.03

Advanced materials

2. Select as kind of "Falloff" the "Fresnel" one.

3. Do "clic" on the "NONE" button of white color, and add there "VRayMap". If we use another render engine we will use the respective raytrace map, or the "Raytrace" for the scanline render.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6_en.htm (2 of 29)25/10/2006 0.16.03

Advanced materials

4. The "Fresnel" reflect is done. If we want to blur the reflect, we only need to turn the "Glossy" check box on, and try with differents values of the Glossiness.

Once seen this, we are prepared to begin with our materials. ●

Matte plastic (Standard Material)

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6_en.htm (5 of 29)25/10/2006 0.16.03

Advanced materials

1. Assign a color simple (Diffuse) or a picture (Bitmap). This will be the color of our object. 2. Use a white specular color, with a low intensity (Specular Level = 20 - 30) and diffuse enough (Glossiness = 10 - 20). 3.

To improve the final look we can use a "Fresnel" reflect very blurred.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6_en.htm (6 of 29)25/10/2006 0.16.03

Advanced materials

Polish plastic (Standard Material) 1. Assign a color simple (Diffuse) or a picture (Bitmap). This will be the color of our object, as in the matte plastic 2. Use a white specular color, with a high intensity (Specular Level = 200 500) and very sharp (Glossiness = 85 - 95). 3.

Apply a clear "Fresnel" reflect.

Wood (Standard Material) 1. Use a picture (Bitmap) as the image of the wood we wanted, or the procedural material of the MAX called "Wood". Is adviced to use a bitmap because of the realism of this one (though if we get a good procedural we won't need to add a mapping to the wooden objects. In both cases, is used to be needed a desaturation (use as "Diffuse" a grey color (128,128,128) and change the percentage of the bitmap (or procedural) to 80 - 90%). 2. Change the color of the specular to amber or similar, of low intensity (Specular Level = 20 - 30) and very widespread (Glossiness = 10 - 20). It can be improved with a “Multi-Layer” specular, as in the example. 3. We can simulate the bump copying the "Diffuse" map to the "Bump" box. The intensity will be changed depending on the contrast of the "Diffuse" map. Try different levels of bump until it works. 4. If the wood is recent varnished, we will use a sharp "Fresnel" reflect with a 70 - 90% of intensity. If the wood is matte or if the object is old, we can use the "Glossiness" option in a "Fresnel" reflect with a 50 - 70 % of intensity.

Chromed metal (Standard Material) 1. To get a not too bright reflect, we must use a dark "Diffuse" color (dark grey or black). 2. The specular will be white and very sharp (Glossiness = 85 - 95) and with a huge intensity (Specular Level = 200 - 500). It can be enhanced with the “MultiLayer” specular, as it is in the example. 3.

Apply a common reflection (not “Fresnel”) set to 100%.

NOTE: the "quality" of the chromed depends COMPLETELY on the environment that surrounds the object. The richer environment (a finished 360º complete and full scene), the better result.

Glass (VRayMtl Material) We are going to create this material using the "VRayMat" of the VRay render engine. Doing that we will see the facility of using this new material. 1. In the "Diffuse" color select a very dark color (better black), to avoid the bright reflecfts. 2. Change the black color of the "Reflect" (no reflect) with white (maximun reflection). Activate the "Fresnel reflections" (easier than standard way seen before). 3. The refraction works exactly the same way of reflection. Change the black color (no refraction) with white (maximun refraction). VERY IMPORTANT: to get a "real" glass, we must use the specific Index Of Refraction (IOR) of the glass (1,52 more os less). If we use another value the effect will be wrong.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6_en.htm (14 of 29)25/10/2006 0.16.03

Advanced materials

Also, we can do variations of this glass as the following ones: ❍

Tinted glass: the glass can be tinted with the color we want. We only need to do some test to get the exactly tint effect, due to the thickness of the object. To get this, change the white color of the “Fog color” with the desired and change the “Fog multiplier” until we get the wanted tint amount.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6_en.htm (15 of 29)25/10/2006 0.16.03

Advanced materials

Not flat glass: this is a very interesting glass, and can be used in screens, windows, etc. We only need to use a bump map. In this case, it's made with a noise map in the "Bump" button.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6_en.htm (16 of 29)25/10/2006 0.16.03

Advanced materials

Acid glass: it could be a variation of the last material, but with a very small size of noise. To do this we don't need a bump map, because the VRayMat has an option to get this effect. We only need to activate the “Glossiness” value from 1 (perfect glass with no distortions) to the value we want (0,8 is the value of the example). The smoothness of this effect depends on the “Subdivs” value: the higher the smoother (but it increase the render time).

Metallic paint (Standard Material) 1. In the “Diffuse” color button add a “Falloff” map (due to the effect of the real metallic paint) not a basic color. Once into the "Falloff" options, change the first color with the desired color of the object (blue, red...) and the second one with a very darker version of the first color, or even black. 2. To enhance the specular shine use a “Multi-Layer” one (it is a mix of two specular shines). The first specular must be a white one, very intense (Specular

Advanced materials

Level = 300 - 500) and very sharp (Glossiness = 90 - 95). The second specular must be of the color of the object, but brighter, and diffuse enough (Glossiness = 15 - 30), and its intensity will be controlled by a “Celullar”, “Noise” or similar map, but always using a very small size. This way we can get the "grease" effect. 3. Apply a “Fresnel” reflect (in the metallic paint case, we can use a 20% common reflect).

Water At the begining, we must think about wwhat kind of water we need, transparent water (if we are going to see what is under the sea), or opaque one (if we only want it refrecl). If we need transparent water we will use a "VRayMtl" material due to the possible problems with the shadows if we use a "Standard" one. ❍

Transparent water (VRayMtl Material) 1. To avoid the bright "Fresnel" reflects we will use the black as the "Diffuse" color.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6_en.htm (21 of 29)25/10/2006 0.16.03

Advanced materials

2. Change the black of the "Reflect" box to white and check the “Fresnel reflection” on. 3. Also, modify the black box of the "Refract" to white (total refraction). The Index Of Refraction (IOR) must be 1,33. 4.

We get the relief using a “Noise” map ("Regular" or "Fractal" as we want).

NOTE: is very important to activate the “Affect Shadows” checkbox of the “VRayMtl” material to process correctly the color.

(changing the size of the "Noise" map)

Opaque water (Standard Material) 1. The “Diffuse” color will be a lightly desaturated blue (relatively next to grey) and dark enough (the blue of the example is RGB: 28, 48, 58). 2. A nice specular shine is made using the “Multi-Layer” one. The primary specular will be a white one, of a high intensity (Specular Level = 200 - 500) and very sharp (Glossiness = 85 – 95). The secondary specular will be light blue, with not too much intensity (Specular Level = 20 - 35) and very diffuse (Glossiness = 20 – 30). 3. Use a “Fresnel” (remember the "Falloff" technic) reflect in the “Reflect” button.

Advanced materials

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6_en.htm (25 of 29)25/10/2006 0.16.03

Advanced materials

VERY IMPORTANT: similar to the chromed effect, the water quality depends directly on the environment. If we can't get a nice reflect, we could use a bitmap to get a reflect different to the real one. You can get this with the "Reflection/refraction etc environment" - "Override MAX's" VRay's option in the render engine configuration window.

Velvet (Standard Material) 1. The key of this material is it's color, because the lack of specular shine, reflect or similar. The appropiate effect is produced by the “Falloff” material applied to the “Diffuse” button. The upper color of the "Falloff" material will be garnet (in this case), and the lower one pink (not pastel pink). 2. Though the effect would be almost achieved, we could improve it adding a little "Noise" to the "Bump". It must be very little and fractal.

Approximated duration: 1-2 hours Software: Softimage XSI 3.5, 3D Studio MAX 5.1 (VRay render engine) y Adobe Photoshop CS

How many times we have looked at a picture and don't know which parts are 3D objects and which real. This magic is mainly the merit of a good integration of the 3D object in the scene, but... how could we get this? We must follow this basic steps: 1. Modify our 3D model till we get the good one. 2. Set up the camera with the better angle and perspective, as near as possible of the background. 3. Set up the "matte" elements if they were needed. 4. Analyze the illumination of the background where our character or 3D object is going to be composed. 5. Select the render engine, set it up and render the final image. 6. Make the needed retouches in Photoshop. In this composition of our character (Papo) on a frame of the film "Shrek" by PDI/DreamWorks, we use SoftImage XSI 3.5 for the modeling, texturing and set up of it, 3D Studio MAX 5.1 with VRay for the illumination and rendering, and Photoshop CS for the cleaning of the background and final retouches. First steps The first: to think what we want to do. In this case the main idea is replace "Shrek" of the original frame with "Papo". This is a not easy step, because "Papo" is too much thinner than "Shrek". So... select the clone brush and let's go!

Once got the pose, let's export the mesh to MAX. That way we can use the VRay. Setting the camera up After merged the mesh in MAX and created all the materials, we need to set up the camera: position, angle and perspective. This is one os the most important steps of the project because here is the 50% of the final realism, or higher in an infoarchitectural project. The best way to do this in MAX is move the perspective instead of the camera, because with perspective we have a lot of freedom, and after this, convert it to a camera (selecting the viewport, and with the camera selected too, pressing Ctrl+C) We set up as background the original frame ("Shrek" and "Donkey") and orbiting, zooming and trucking the camera, we will get the best perspective with just the angle we wanted.

Lighting The hardest thing to do in this composition is the lighting simulation because of the leaves the light pass through. We must see how the light affect the objects (specially to "Shrek" and "Donkey") and set up the light. After setting up the light, we must look for an image which "filtered" the light (black and white image of a tree's leaves), and create a plane, as a floor, with a "Matte/Shadow" material. The global illumination will do the rest.

3D composing over an image

Render Engine Once set the camera and light up, we only need to choose the render engine. Here we use VRay due to its great render time and its quality. After the rendering process, we save the image in TGA of TIFF, storing the alpha channel. In Photoshop, the alpha channel will help us to select Papo. Final retouches in Photoshop The best advise for a composition is to assign the original image (with "Shrek" erased) as the backgroung, and the Papo one as a layer. This way, we can adjust the colors and every value of each element separately.. http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutoria8_en.htm (7 of 10)25/10/2006 0.16.25

3D composing over an image

The retouches made were a "Hue/Saturation" adjust to desaturate Papo a little, and modify its green color to a yellower one, a "Curves" adjustment layer to get a more contrasted colours, and another layer to add some grass over his feet.

... After many months, I've seen this composition again and... Oh! What is this!?!? The picture was not too marvelous as I remembered. What happened? Basicaly I discovered an error in the background. This is different in the right and in the left of Papo. 15 minutes after the background is right, and with a more professional look.

How to set up the global illumination in VRay

If you like this tutorial, please write a comment or a suggestion in the "Suggestions" section. Thanks How to set up the global illumination in VRay

For creating a good and fast global illumination in VRay you only must follow next easy steps:

1.- Create a simple scene. In this specific case we have done a plane with a teapot on it.

2.- Apply to both objects two simple materials. I have used the standard material for the plane and a brighter and 2-sides one for the teapot.

3.- Go to the "Render Scene" menu (F10) and select the VRay render engine as the Production renderer in "Current Renderers".

4.- Go down, and in the "Global Switches" options check out the "Default lights" checkbox.

5.- Below we find the "Image Sampler (Antialiasing)" submenu. There select the "Adaptive Subdivision" as edge smoothing method. Check the "Rand" checkbox for a noise effect in the edges.

How to create caustics in VRay

If you like this tutorial, please write a comment or a suggestion in the "Suggestions" section. Thanks How to create caustics in VRay

A good caustics can give much life to a scene, because it's a real common optic effect. To create them in VRay you must follow the next steps:

1.- Create a simple scene, like the below one.

2.- Next, apply the materials to the objects. The floor plane have the MAX standard material, and the another three objects have a more complex material explained below.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial2_en.htm (1 of 9)25/10/2006 0.17.39

How to create caustics in VRay

3.- Analyzing the material apllied to the red glass sphere we can see how it's created: 1. The "Ambient" and "Diffuse" colors are changed to a dark red. 2. The opacity must be set up to 30, because if we move it down to 0 we can lose the shadows. 3. The reflection map is made with a "Falloff" material, adding to the white color box the VRayMap, and selecting in it the "Reflect" checkbox. 4. We can get the refraction adding in the refraction map another VRayMap, but this time with the "Refract" checkbox checked, and setting the filter color a lighter color than the diffuse one

Using a displacement map in VRay

If you like this tutorial, please write a comment or a suggestion in the "Suggestions" section. Thanks Using a displacement map in VRay

Many times, for adding extra detail to our mesh, a simple bump map is not enough for getting the desired effect, specially in the mesh borders. For this, the very best solution is to use a "home made" displacement map. VRay offers a superb look and a short render time. To apply a displacement map to a mesh follow this easy steps:

1.- Create a plane and apply it a standard material. We must check the "Generate Mapping Coords.".

2.- Next, place a light as in the picture, so it can generate some interesting shadows.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial3_en.htm (1 of 7)25/10/2006 0.18.33

3.- The light parameters must be this way for a good final effect.

4.- Prepare the VRay for using global illumination as in the 1st tutorial, but with a multiplier of 0,8 in the environment (now we have a light and with the same multiplier that in the 1st tutorial we got an extremely burned image) and render the scene. We must get a plane as this.

5.- Select the plane and add it a "VRayDisplacementMod" modifier.

6.- For a good use of this modifier, we need an image for using as displacement. A displacement always works in the same way: black = down, white = up. In this case, I have made with Photoshop a kind of maze painted in black and white..

How to set up an exterior scene with VRay

If you like this tutorial, please write a comment or a suggestion in the "Suggestions" section. Thanks How to set up an exterior scene with VRay

Everybody has needed to do an exterior scene anytime. It's very easy if we stop and think about how the light affect the buildings. 3D Studio MAX lets us to get this with the great render engine VRay. We only must follow these steps:

1.- For this tutorial, I've created 4 simple buildings and a plane with a multiplier set to 500. Also, I've made the sidewalks.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial7_en.htm (1 of 14)25/10/2006 0.19.04

How to set up an exterior scene with VRay

2.- Create a "Target Direct" light (is the best kind of light to simulate the solar rays because the parallelism of the rays is similar to the sun). We set it up as in the picture.

3.- The best way to set a light up is "looking through it". We can do this (selected the light previously) with the shortcut Shift+4, or pressing the right button on the viewport name and selecting the light into the "Views" menu, as you can see..

4.- We will see something similar to this image.

7.- Set up the light as the next pictures. It's important the shadow was "VRayShadow", the color a little yellowish and to check the "Overshoot" checkbox to get the light illuminate beyond the cilinder (but not cast shadows). In the "VRayShadow" parameters, check the "Area shadow" checkbox and change the size to a good value (trying and changing).

9.- If we render now the scene, we will see something similar to this.

10.- It has a bad quality, but the render time is very low, and we can see how the light works. To improve the picture, we can use as the background color the same light blue used in the VRay to get the Global Illumination. Drag and drop the color from the render window to the Environment one.

12.- The picture is credible, but it can be improved. If we get a 360º x 90º sky we can promote the realism, and correcting the perspective. The actual one seems to be taken from a 15th floor. Loot at this new render. I've changed the sky and the perspective and, as you can see, the final look is completely different.. A good trick for a infoarchitecture work is to set the camera at 1,80m. from the floor, similar to the height of a pedestrian.

To Set up a scene with global illumination and a good quality in finalRender is not too hard, but the fact is that neither it is too easy as VRay or another render engine. For getting a good look we must follow next steps:

1.- Create a scene (not very complicated for see the final image soon) and aplly it the standard material of MAX, but changing the diffuse color to a little more bright grey.

2. Seleccionamos como tipo de “Falloff” el “Fresnel”.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6.htm (2 of 30)25/10/2006 0.20.07

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6.htm (3 of 30)25/10/2006 0.20.07

Plástico mate (Material Standard)

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6.htm (5 of 30)25/10/2006 0.20.07

Materiales avanzados

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6.htm (9 of 30)25/10/2006 0.20.07

Metal cromado (Material Standard) 1.

Negro = no reflejo, y Blanco = reflejo máximo.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial6.htm (16 of 30)25/10/2006 0.20.07

Pintura metalizada (Material Standard) 1.

Agua transparente (Material VRayMtl) 1.

Agua opaca (Material Standard) 1.

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutoria8.htm (8 of 10)25/10/2006 0.20.11

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial2.htm (1 of 9)25/10/2006 0.20.30

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial3.htm (1 of 8)25/10/2006 0.20.35

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial7.htm (1 of 15)25/10/2006 0.20.40

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial7.htm (2 of 15)25/10/2006 0.20.40

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial7.htm (6 of 15)25/10/2006 0.20.40

http://alzhem.brinkster.net/sub1/tutorials/tutorial7.htm (11 of 15)25/10/2006 0.20.40
