elcome to Violin Star To the teacher: This series will inspire violinists to develop confidence and musical skills through a

t4c

refreshing choice of pieces. The repertoire presents a logical and approachable progression from the very first stages of playing through to Grade 2. Each piece is designed to develop a specific technique; as the series progresses, the pieces introduce the keys (and their related finger patterns) encountered at the early grades. There is a fun mix of musical styles, which include arrangements and original compositions. For each of the three Violin Star levels, there is one Student's book and one Accompaniment book. The Student's books contain the solo violin part, and an audio CD. The Accompaniment books have separate piano and violin accompaniments for every piece. The three different forms of accompaniment in Violin Star offer variety, flexibility and interaction for both pupil and teacher. Dotted around the Student's books you will find suggestions for supporting activities, which can be used in individual or group teaching and can form a base to develop your own ideas. Ali 106 pieces in Violin Star were created during the course of my work as a peripatetic violin teacher. Children are wonderful critics, and if they don't like the music they won't mince their words. The repertoire in Violin Star passed the test - in fact, it could not have been written without the students. I hope you enjoy Violin Star!

Ride on a Quad Bike Before you play Ride on a Quad Bike, try using your left little finger to pluck the open strings. Start by plucking the E string (which is the easiest), then the A, D, and G (which is the hardest). This warm-up helps to keep the little finger curved and held over the strings. ~

Play the scale with three different rhythms, as found in Pachelbel's Canon in the following bars: • each note played as a minim (as in bars 1-8) • each note played as two crotchets (as in bars 9-12) • each note played as four quavers (as in bars 13 -15).

Morning Has Broken The opening of Morning Has Broken uses the first four ascending notes of a D major arpeggio. Here is one octave of the arpeggio, ascending and descending:

• • • • • • Learn this arpeggio by heart and you will find Morninq Has Broken - and lots of other melodies - much easier to learn. Try playing the arpeggio using different rhythms or dynamics.

Action Hero! Improvisation Now make up an improvisation on Action Hera! This works best when you play along with the improvisation piano accompaniment or the Action Hera! Impravisation backing track on the (D. Use the notes suggested: open D and A, and the first and second fingers on the D string. Play any of these notes in any rhythm (if you like, just play long notes). Play for four bars, then take four bars' rest. Repeat as many times as you wish. ~W_h_e_n_y_o_u_h_av_e_i_m_p_ro_v_is_ed_s_o_m_e_th_i_ng_y.o_u.r.ea.l.~.li.ke.,.t~ •• w.r.iti.n.g.it.d.o.w.n •.••••

Lullaby

Weber

(1786-1826)

Galliard 'Hooked bowing' means that you play two notes in the same bow, but with a break between them. Ga/liard uses this technique six times (excluding the repeats): can you spot which bars include hooked bowing? Now practise this skill on the open strings first of all, for example like this:

When you feel confident playing on the open strings, try it on a D major scale:

Bourrée from Limousin Bourrée from Limousin is written in E natural minoro This scale uses finger positions that are similar to its relative key G major: the second finger is spaced up on the D string but remains dose to the first finger on the A string. Here are the notes for you to practise the E natural minor scale:

The final bar of Bourrée [rom Limousin indudes the option to

play a harmonic

note on the E string (notated in brackets). Ask your teacher to demonstrate how to play it, and to show you similar harmonics on the G, D and A strings, 50

that you can practise this technique yourself .
