About Installation of the BMW Diagnostic System Prerequisites: Computer Hardware/Operations system: Windows Computer that meets the VMware minimum requirements for RAM and OS. (For XP we suggest a minimum of 1.5 GB RAM, 2 or even 3 GB is better. Vista/Windows 7 3 GB is good). Computer can run Windows XP, XP professional, Windows Vista (32 or 64 Bit) Windows 7 (32 or 64 Bit), and Windows 8.1 (32 or 64 Bit). Other versions of Windows not supported. Recently reinstalled operating system, or an otherwise “clean” installation of Windows with no added security or anti-virus packages. If you attempt to install or run the BMW applications with some AV type products they WILL fail. Windows must have at least Internet Explorer 8 installed. Versions before that do not allow the installation to display properly. If you have done a recent install of Windows XP from CD, it will NOT have IE 8 in most cases. Running Windows Update will get you access to IE 8. Note that because Microsoft has retired XP, getting source files can be difficult. In some instances we can help as we’ve access to much of the original Microsoft XP product line in OEM format. Windows will need the .NET Framework 2.05.0727. As it is not available separately, we recommend installing at.NET Framework 3.5. This can be downloaded separately or as part of Windows Update optional downloads. Note that newer versions than 3.5 MAY cause the BMW applications we need to fail under some circumstances. User MUST have or be Administrator for ALL the installation. If using Vista or Windows 7 or 8.1 the UAC (user account control) must also be disabled. After install and configuration UAC can be reactivated but you’ll encounter prompts when attempting to use the applications. Some applications may silently fail however, especially if you turn up the level. 45 GB of disc space before the installation commences. The virtual machines take up a fair amount of space. The computer must have a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768 for the virtual machines to display properly. Higher resolutions are OK. Most Anti-Virus programs are completely incompatible with this installation and the BMW software. We recommend Microsoft Security Essentials if you require an AV program. To diagnose with ADS the computer must have a "Real" RS232 nine-pin COM1 Serial Port for communication with the ADS cable. For ADS interface cables you MUST use Windows XP as the host operating system. An EDIABAS/OBD/ADS cable with either the standard OBD or 20 Pin connections as appropriate for YOUR BMW. If using an OEM BMW Multiplexer (DK-1 Yellow Head, OPS or OPPS) you will need the IP address of the unit to configure the EDIABAS portion of the system.

Everything else: Installed copy of VMware Workstation (Versions 6.5 though 10 tested and known to work with no issues), or a version of VMware Player - Version 6 for 64 bit CPU’s or Version 3 for 32-Bit CPU’s are available as of this document and know to work properly). Player is free for non-commercial use, Workstation you will need a valid license to use. There is a link for the installation of VMware Player in the Installation Program if you do not already have it. PDF File reader such as Adobe Acrobat®, Foxit Reader are both useable, free solutions (Note that if installing on Windows 8.1 you will lose access to the built in PDF reader when the UAC is disabled for the install. You can add the Adobe or Foxit readers to replace this. Or copy this document to another machine to reference while installing. For the installation and update process, you need an active Internet connection. There several supporting applications and any available updates that would need to be downloaded to complete the installation. This is the “Download version” of the EasyInstall system.

Overview Our Philosophy is that one size does NOT fit all situations. Our installation is very comprehensive and allows users to select that which is necessary for their particular situation. We do not send out one preformatted system installation that ‘works only when installed exactly as delivered’ like so many of the other versions of ‘simple installs’ do. And because we want the installation to be as painless as possible, we also do not ask you to do things such as “using Regedit open this registry entry and change this” or “go to the device manager and do this”. So we suggest you first read the document and see that you understand the ‘how’ and we will try to provide the ‘why’ as you go along for this complex BMW diagnostic system. The DirectDownload system is in three main steps. The first step, the initial download from the emailed link is of the files “xxxxSetup.exe” from our secure server. This file contains the EasyInstall applications, including the actual download program. The ‘xxxx’ part of the file name is your assigned serial number. The second step instructs on accessing and installing the required applications that support the EasyInstall system, followed by downloading the BMW EDIABAS CD ISO files, the DIS v44 and v57 as well as the SSS Progman virtual machines. The third step involves performing the actual installation of the BMW applications, and the final configuration of the system for use

Disk space and the installation The download files require between 7.5 and 10 GB depending upon what you download. If you have limited disk space on the target computer you do not have to download all the files at once. You can download only the sections you need for the portion of the install you need to perform and fill in the rest later. When possible, we do recommend saving the download files onto external media such as a thumb drive. As long as Windows assigns the drive an alphabetical drive letter when it’s attached, you can save the files there for future installations. How this works: The files are downloaded as ‘7z’ files to a folder on the drive you choose on your computer and then the downloaded files are extracted from the ‘zip’ format and stored in the correct location. In the case of the BMW EDIABAS ISO files they are stored in a folder on the windows driver called “BMWISO”. The Virtual machine files will be stored on the drive that you choose in a folder named “Virtual Machines”. The update files will be stored on the same drive as the EDIABAS installation (which is usually the Windows Boot drive) in folders named after the downloaded file names. Once all the files are extracted you can delete the ‘7z’ files to conserve space. If you need space to begin with, download, extract then delete each set of ‘7z’ files as you go. This should allow you to install on even a space limited hard drive. If you really have limited space invest in a good quality USB thumb drive large enough to store all the files and then use that as your ‘save’ location for the downloads. Then you will have a complete set of files on a removable media for later reinstallation should it be needed without needing to download the files a second time. 11 Copyright © 2010 – 2016 pss-autosoft.net

First things first Windows Vista, Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. Before actually installing the EasyInstall system you will need to ensure that you have the “User Account Control” disabled. For Windows Vista this is a simple ‘on’ ‘off’ option. For Windows 7 and newer it is a bit more involved. If you do NOT deactivate the UAC you will find that there will be errors in the installation that will keep things from operating as expected. This includes post-install as some applications included will NOT function correctly if the UAC is re-enabled.

Windows Vista UAC Open your control panel.

Begin Installation of EasyInstall system Download the xxxxSetup.exe file from the link provided in your email and save it somewhere you can find it. Double click the downloaded file to start the extraction process.

Figure 13 EasyInstall - Starting the initial installation process. Accept the user agreement, and then enter the password to continue. The password is “EasyInstall” without the quote marks and it IS case sensitive.

Figure 14 EasyInstall - Enter password "EasyInstall" to continue Continue clicking “Next” until you get to the “Install” button. This will actually extract all installation and configuration files to the system so the download of the main applications (EDIABAS 6.4.3, 6.4.7, DIS v44, v57 and the SSS Progman) can happen. We also place several documents about the BMW tools and some documents of general interest in the “My Documents” (or “Documents”) folder depending upon what version of Windows you are working with. There are options to run the EasyInstall registration program as well as to open the document for installing the TeamViewer software for remote support. We can also start the TeamViewer installation when the appropriate boxes are checked when prompted.

Register the EasyInstall System Once this is complete, the “(START HERE) EasyInstall Registration” should automatically start. This will either reside on the desktop (if you chose that option during the install) or on the “Start Menu” under “Programs (or “All Programs for XP”) “BMW CONFIG”. The first step is to authenticate the installation by entering your serial number followed by the email address you used to purchase the system (which will have been forwarded to you in the confirmation email). As part of the installation the software is auto-registered on our server. This requires Internet Access.

Figure 16 EasyInstall- Installation authentication NOTE! Under some conditions the registration will seem to ‘hang’ and not complete as described here. This is normally due to an issue accessing the FTP application built into Windows. If this occurs please simply close the Registration program. You should then be able to continue with the remainder of the installation. NOTE! If you have an incompatible anti-virus program installed, you will likely receive a message about incorrect serial number assigned. This is quite intentional. When the AV program blocks our installer registration, then the same will be true for the BMW tools themselves. And this provides an early warning that your chosen AV program is going to cause issues. 19 Copyright © 2010 – 2016 pss-autosoft.net

pss-autosoft EasyInstall BMW Diagnostic Software We have discovered over time that even AV programs from a couple of years ago that were compatible have grown so much bloat and “nanny-ware” internally that they no longer are acceptable with the BMW Tools. We ONLY recommend the built in Windows Defender for Windows 8 and newer, or Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7 and older. IF you have XP and cannot source the installer for the last XP version of the MS Security Essentials we may be able to assist. We do have their final XP compatible installer in English only, and it will correctly install on XP and allow updates to continue to download.

Starting the DirectDownload (installation manager) Once the registration is the icon is removed from your desktop and the system is registered. Next, find the “EasyInstall Download” application on your desktop (or in the BMW CONFIG submenu of the Start Menu, Programs).

Figure 17 EasyInstall download installer - Initial screen This screen displays the various supporting applications that are necessary to make this system work as intended. There are various options available to you depending upon your specific hardware and software configuration. Since there is sometimes an issue knowing if you have a 32 or 64 bit version of Windows (or a 32 bit operating system on a 64 bit CPU) we provide this data here. Of course if you are running Windows XP then you must have a 32 bit operating system (as our installer will not work with XP 64 bit) but the operating system is incapable of reporting the CPU bit-ness, so you will have to look that up from the hardware vendor’s specifications.

Installing Support / Required Applications

Figure 18 EasyInstall - Main window with all required links. NOTE: If you have to install the VMware, please do so and ensure you go all the way through the reboot process (if required) before continuing the BMW Diagnostic System installation. Click on the VMware Player appropriate for your computer, and save it to then run the installation completely before continuing. You may simply restart the EasyInstall application upon completion of the VMware installation. If you do NOT install the VMware before continuing, you MUST install it before performing the final configuration steps. We will remind you when it’s appropriate.

VMware Installation We do not cover the details of installing the VMware Workstation or VMware Player as there are too many possible versions to cover in detail here. However we do offer the following suggestions: 

We do a CPU Type / Operating System Version check upon startup of the DirectDownload application. The results are shown in red text (see the above image). IF you are running Windows XP, it will report a 32 bit CPU even if there is an x64 CPU installed. If in doubt, look up the specifications for the model computer you are using and choose accordingly. Or you can download a utility such as “CPUID” from http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html to find out your specific CPU type.

Choosing your VMware Application 

If you have a 32 bit CPU (uncommon on more modern machines) you will need VMware Player 3.

If you have a 64 bit CPU (most modern machines are x64 compatible) you can run any version of VMware from Workstation 6.5 (the earliest we support) to the current version. VMware Workstation is a paid-application and has more features and capabilities than VMware Player.

21 Copyright © 2010 – 2016 pss-autosoft.net

pss-autosoft EasyInstall BMW Diagnostic Software 

VMware Player is a ‘free for non-commercial use’ application that performs many of the same functions as VMware Workstation. You do not need any more than VMware Player to make use of the pre-built Virtual machines we have built for you. Versions from 3 to 6 are fully tested, version 12 has been slightly tested without any seeming issues.

VMware Installation Suggestions 

When installing VMware Player there will be prompts on checking for updates on each system start. This is a thinly disguised attempt to convince you to obtain the latest PAID version of VMware. You can safely de-select this option. Note that we don’t expect you to attempt to update the VMware tools installed in the SSS Progman virtual machine, and would recommend you do not attempt it.

When installing VMware Workstation you do not need to perform any custom network settings. In the majority of instances our EDIABAS and final configuration will properly configure the VMware network for use with the EasyInstall system.

When the installation of the VMware is completed, it may require a reboot before using the system. Please allow the system to reboot as necessary. You can restart the DirectDownload application when you are ready to continue.

Installing 7-zip File Archive Application (Optional) Choose the correct link for your particular Operating System (32 bit or 64 bit). This opens an instance of Internet Explorer and should automatically start the download process. You may be prompted as shown below:

Figure 19 - EasyInstall - 7-zip download prompt Note that the above image was from a Windows 7 system using Internet Explorer 11. Older/different versions prompt differently. 22 Copyright © 2010 – 2016 pss-autosoft.net

pss-autosoft EasyInstall BMW Diagnostic Software Save the file or run depending upon your desire. If you save it without running it, it will be in your computers default save location where you can find it and then install it later. Follow the on-screen prompts when running the install. Choose all the defaults.

Figure 20 - The steps for installing the 7-Zip application. The above was taken from a 32 bit installation. The x64 install is similar.

Installing the elby Virtual Clone Drive Application (Required) The elby Virtual Clone Drive application is a simple utility that allows a CD or DVD file that has been created in a special format known as an .ISO format to run as if it were an actual CD or DVD. We specifically use this one because it is very low in overhead and it is very reliable – and it’s freely available. The VCD is required to complete the installation – though if you have a suitable substitute we will not force you to replace it. Just note that any references to the VCD will need to be adjusted to your actual virtual CD/DVD reader. Clicking on the link normally will open the Internet Explorer “Run Save” prompt screen as shown below. But again, it will depend upon the version of Internet Explorer you have installed on your system.

Installation of CutePDF Writer (Required for printing from DIS) After the converter is installed, then install the CutePDF writer. You will have to change some defaults as it includes some (presumably) unwanted changes to your browser. Please follow the prompts as shown below:

Figure 25 - CutePDF Writer Setup step one. When you get to this screen in the installation please remove the check mark from the boxes so it does NOT install the ASK software (hint! click the bottom box, middle and then the top box!). Unless of course, you actually want the ASK software.

Figure 26 - CutePDF writer installation step two. Following that, for the remainder of the CutePDF installation just click through.

Installation of the ddrLPD to print from UNIX to Windows (Required for printing from DIS) Finally we install the ddrLPD application. The ddrLPD is not freeware or shareware, but is a functioning demo of software that will allow printing from the DIS v44 and DISv57 to the Windows host computer. It works with XP through Windows 7 64-Bit. The program is pre-configured to work as is, though upon each startup of the application a reminder to purchase the registered copy will appear. However, it will work as 25 Copyright © 2010 – 2016 pss-autosoft.net

pss-autosoft EasyInstall BMW Diagnostic Software is, with only a nag-screen. Note that if you use the DIS printing function you should really consider helping out the author of the application. It is the least expensive application that can actually capture UNIX network printing and cause it to print on your Windows computer. Click the link to download the application and you’ll see the familiar Internet Explorer View Download box (again depending upon your version of Internet Explorer):

Figure 27 - EasyInstall - Download prompt for ddrLPD application Save it or run it as you desire, and when you do run it you’ll see the following:

Downloading the Virtual Machines and EDIABAS ISO files Select the “Install Menu” button to get to the download portion of the EasyInstall system.

Figure 29 EasyInstall – System download and update page. The first step is to select the location you want to save the downloaded files on your hard drive. You can choose a external drive or a Mapped network drive (note that is has to be mapped to a drive letter such as “Z” drive or the install gets confused). Select the place where the Virtual Machines will be extracted.

Figure 30 EasyInstall - selected target locations 27 Copyright © 2010 – 2016 pss-autosoft.net

pss-autosoft EasyInstall BMW Diagnostic Software Note that the download of the complete system WITH updates is over 9 GB, and just the EasyInstall base system without the updates is 7.8 GB. You need another 36 GB space for the extracted BASE system (for a total of 43 GB, or 47 GB (plus the download of 9 GB) for the base system with full updates. You can however download in parts; do the EDIABAS ISO files, then they are extracted, so the download files become unnecessary and can be deleted. Then do a Virtual machine (recommend the SSS first as it takes the most space) then dump the downloaded files after it is complete. This keeps the space requirements to a minimum. However, note that we do occasionally update the archives on our server, so if you need to re-download the files you may have to get an updated set of download data from us. Send us an email and we can get you the latest updates.

Download Selections Explained PSS Hosts Files Generally handled by basic installation, so usually left out. (it’s a placeholder in the program)

Choosing your downloads

Figure 31 EasyInstall Download page with items selected Select the items you would like to download, and press the “Download” button on the left. If you select “Unattended download mode” the system will download and extract all selected files without prompt. If you leave this checkbox blank, the system will provide a detailed list of any download errors after each component part is complete and the system pauses until you acknowledge the error by pressing the OK button. The download program uses a custom program to download the individual file segments. This can be seen by a command prompt icon in the taskbar which appears for each file segment being downloaded.

Figure 32 EasyInstall Download - file segment download in progress If you open the command prompt window you can follow the progress of each file segment.

Figure 34 EasyInstall Download - downloading When a set of files does not completely download successfully, when you have NOT checked the “Unattended download” check box, a message such as the above appears to explain which file segments did not download. This does cause the download process to stop until the user clicks the “OK” button, which is why we’ve added the “Unattended Download” option. The “Unattended download mode” is however useful when you would like to download overnight and see the results in the morning. Note that the files are stored on a secure server and the files are encrypted to ensure that no one can alter them before you receive them. This is to ensure you are receiving the system as intended. As the screen above shows, you can follow the progress of the downloaded file segments that are currently downloading (here the EDIABAS 6.4.3) and the status. As each file segment is downloaded, a verification check is performed to ensure that the file was downloaded properly. If the segment passes it will display “File XXX.XX passes validation. If it fails for any reason, it will instead display ‘File XXX.XX download failed.”

If you have a strictly German spec BMW and read/speak Germam, then choose BMW Group Nacharbeitsprogramme, but note that though the installation program is in English (assuming you chose English of course) the installed applications will be in German. For most cars (including most German BMW’s) we reocmmedn selecting the BMW Group Recertification programs UK. This will allow you to update the EDIABAS data sets (which are delivered ONLY as German language, Metric files) without the possibility of calculation errors in use. If you update a USA version with metric data calculations will be completely incorrect as the USA verison uses standard measures and the UK/Deutsche version use metric measures.

Install EDIABAS 6.4.7 The EDIABAS 6.4.7 installs in two parts. First the “BMW Standard Tools” installation which takes care of updating the system from EDIABAS 6.4.3 to 6.4.7. This is followed by the EDIABAS 6.4.7 update that will add data and update some of the applications included on the EDIABAS 6.4.7 CD. There is an option in the BMW Standard Tools installation that prompts for a backup. We do recommend doing the backup install, but you MUST choose the source location when prompted by the installer. If you do not your basic EDIABAS update will fail and the system will not work as expected. On the desktop, double-click the EDIABAS647 icon to dismount the EDIABAS643 CD image and mount the EDIABAS647 CD image using Virtual Clone Drive. On some computers, even with the Autorun option enabled, you will still have to use Windows Explorer to start the installation program. Open "My Computer" (Windows XP) or "Computer" (Windows Vista, 7). Navigate to the Virtual CD drive icon and double click to open it. The installation program again checks to see what operating system is being used and configures itself to install using the correct parameters for the installed operating system.

NOTE on VMware Network Configuration The following section on VMware settings ONLY applies when using any non-OEM type interface, that is USB or serial based. NOTE: There are circumstances when the “EZConfigure” Application attempts to change the IP address of the VMware virtual network adapter and the VMware Network Adapter VMnet1 indicates that the IP address changes were successful when the change did not actually occur (or did not stay set). This is an issue with how VMware stores their virtual network adapter settings. They store their settings in an initialization file and in the Windows standard registry settings. There are occasions that the update of the Windows Registry settings does NOT change the VMware file, and the settings revert to the initial VMware settings. When this occurs the system will not communicate between the car and the virtual machines and you will be unable to set the internal communications as related later in this manual. The settings can be manually changed in the Windows Control Panel under Network Connections. If this is indicated by a lack of communication follow the next steps (depending upon your Windows version). The most common cause of this failure is VMware not correctly installed, OR VMware running when the EZConfigure was run. Another issue that is important to understand is the issue of using an OEM head. OEM heads that are commonly referred to as “Clones” typically have an IP address in the same range as our basic system. However, authentic OEM heads can and do have any legal IP address based on the source workshop. Now these heads CAN be changed to an address in the expected range of the

Configuring your cable All cable types require some form of configuration. We have built a Cable Selection utility that will configure the EDIABAS system to work with any legitimate configuration. Find your cable type on the following pages.

Figure 96Cable Select Utility - initial screen.

ADS Cables (cars from approximately 1987 through 1997) ADS cables are very similar in appearance to the later 20 pin OBD (AKA K-CAN) cables. They are electronically different and using a non-ADS cable on a ADS car will result in the system not functioning properly. ADS cables are all serial, and the BMW software itself expect to find the ADS cable on COM1 and only on COM1. The software also checks the hardware address, which for real COM1 ports is 3F8 and IRQ 4. If you computer doesn’t support this then you will need to find a different computer. If your car is at the borderline of the age for ADS/K-CAN we recommend you perform the following check prior to purchasing a cable (or purchase a cable from a vendor that offers a Serial Cable that supports both data formats). If you think you might need an ADS interface, check the voltage at pin 15 of your round connector on the car; if you see about 11 volts you need the ADS interface. If not then you will need the 20-pin round OBD version which is covered below. Please remember that the ADS software built into the EDIABAS software is only functional on a Windows XP or older computer. The Cable Select utility does not force you to observe this, but will warn you if you attempt to load an ADS cable on a Vista or newer operating system. NOTE!

Running the ADS driver on anything other than Windows XP will cause a Device Driver Load error that you will see every time you boot the machine!

pss-autosoft EasyInstall BMW Diagnostic Software To configure and ADS cable, select the ADS radio button, the software will automatically select the COM1 COM Port option.

Figure 97 Cable Select - Setting an ADS cable. Press the “Change” button.

Figure 98 Cable Select - Setting ADS Cable - confirmed. In the above image, the change was acknowledged and a Command Prompt was automatically opened so you can run the ADS setup program. This will install the ADS driver on Windows XP. If you attempt to 65 Copyright © 2010 – 2016 pss-autosoft.net

pss-autosoft EasyInstall BMW Diagnostic Software load the ADS on anything other than Windows XP you will instead see the following warning.

Figure 99 Cable Select - ADS on Windows 7 Warning. Then it will continue on and make the changes to the configuration files however it will NOT open the command prompt.

USB/Serial K-Line or D-CAN Setting the Serial or USB cables can be performed on any operating system our install supports. The Serial cables can be on any physical serial port you have available in your machine. Again, like the ADS cable, the serial port should be a “Real” physical serial port built into the machine. Our software will find any installed serial port in the machine, but the BMW software may refuse to work on non-standard serial ports. NOTE!

The CableSelect Utility will find all FTDI based serial ports. If you are using a USB EDIABAS cable, the proper device driver must be loaded before attempting to configure the cable. This means normally that you should have plugged the cable in and let Windows install the appropriate device drivers. When the automatic install fails, we have included the actual FTDI device drivers as part of the installation. They reside in the BMW CONFIG menu on the Start Menu, Programs.

The FTDI Chipset is the only chipset we currently support and is in almost every USB cable we’ve come across. We strongly recommend that you ensure your USB cable is a FTDI Chipset based cable. The Cable Select software may not find the serial port of your cable if it is not based on the FTDI Chipset. If you have any questions, you can query your cable vendor or simply take the cable apart (generally there are four screws holding it together and rarely is there any added glue) and look at the chips inside. All FTDI chips are clearly marked.

Figure 100 Cable Select - Choosing USB COM3. Note that this particular computer has two physical COM ports as well as the USB COM3 COM port. If you are using a laptop with no physical COM port the program will only display the USB port. If you haven’t loaded the FTDI drivers, the program will report there are no COM Ports and exit. Once you have selected the appropriate COM port, choose the “Change” button and the following will appear.

Figure 101 Cable Select - COM3 USB K-CAN/D-CAN configured.

One time configuration of USB FTDI EDIABAS Cables If you are using a USB cable, there is one setting that needs to be configured in the device manager for the connections timing. We have provided a utility program to accomplish this. From the start menu, Programs, BMW CONFIG select the “FTDICONF” utility. This only needs to be done one time for each 67 Copyright © 2010 – 2016 pss-autosoft.net

BMW DK (Yellow Head)/ OPS / OPPS If you have a real (or clone) BMW DK (AKA Yellow Head or incorrectly as a GT1), OPS or OPPS diagnostic head you can use the cable with your EDIABAS and with the DIS or SSS Progman. You must know the IP address of the head to use the cable select utility. There are two basic issues with using an OEM type head. Original “Real” DK/OPS/OPPS First is that authentic OEM heads (used or the rare new models) often have locked IP addresses set to correspond to the workshop they were installed in. Because these heads communicate via LAN and were not typically connected directly between the car and computer, the IP address the IT department in the workshop would be one that is useable inside their company’s network. And since each device on any network must have a unique IP address, the actual address of your head could be any legal address.

Figure 103 EasyInstall - Typical network configuration for shop Clone DK/OPS/OPPS When you are using a typical “Clone” head, it is normally much simpler to setup as they (so far as we have seen) all have a locked IP address in the expected range of this software, Most are preconfigured on the IP address range of “192.168.68.xx”. And there is NO method of changing their locked in address. So if you’re configuring a workshop to use these heads you would have to modify the workshop LAN to match the head. Using EZCableSelect to set EDIABAS In the EZCableSelect program you have the option of “IP Address”. When you select this option the display changes to allow you to enter the IP address of the OEM head. There is also an additional 69 Copyright © 2010 – 2016 pss-autosoft.net

pss-autosoft EasyInstall BMW Diagnostic Software checkbox so that when you have an OPS or OPPS head (and possibly ICOM) you select the “OPS/OPPS/ICOM” checkbox. This will ensure the MOST connection functions as expected.

Figure 104 Cable Select - Configure a real BMW diagnostic head. NOTE: This ONLY configures the EDIABAS. The host computer built in LAN card settings MUST be configured to communicate on the same IP Address range as that of your OPS. If you do not do this, the LAN card will automatically assign a default address (typically in the range of 169.254.xxx.xxx) and will NOT communicate with the head. This is due to the fact that there is no DHCP server between the OPS and the computer. In the earlier workshop image you will note that the heads are all connected to the LAN and computers through a router (or switch). This device normally (such as in the typical home network) uses what is known as DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and automatically assigns and IP address to each device that does not have one pre-defined. And if the pre-defined address (such as we displayed in the VMware configuration manual IP address setting section) is on a different range than the main shop address, the system will still not connect. For the following, our example OPS head has an IP address of “192.168.68.85” and has MOST support so that is what is entered in the following image. You MUST use the actual address of your OEM diagnostic head.

Figure 105 Cable Select - Real Head configuration success. NOTE!

This requires some manual configuration on your part however. The BMW heads use a real physical LAN port to communicate with the computer. This means that your physical COM Port must be manually changed to a complimentary IP address. We cannot automatically perform this, as each BMW head can have its own unique IP address.

Configure XP for OEM Head (BMW DK1 (Yellow Head)/ OPS/OPPS cont.) When using a real (or clone) diagnostic head you will need to manually configure your physical network IP address. Note that this will only affect the hardware LAN connection, not the wireless connection (assuming you are using a laptop with Wi-Fi). Open your Network settings (we are using a Windows XP, which is different from Vista/Windows 7).

Configure Virtual Machine configuration for OEM diagnostic head (BMW DK1 (Yellow Head)/ OPS/OPPS cont.)

The system as delivered is configured for use with aftermarket cables. This means that to use a OEM head you will need to change a setting in the Virtual Machine configuration. This is a minor operation, 73 Copyright © 2010 – 2016 pss-autosoft.net

pss-autosoft EasyInstall BMW Diagnostic Software and can be accomplished in just a few moments. NOTE!

If you have several types of cables (OEM and aftermarket) you will need to reconfigure the virtual machines before each cable type is used. Save time and just check before using if it’s been a while between uses! THIS PRESUMES YOU HAVE ALREADY ADDED THE VIRTUAL MACHINES TO THE VMware MENU! (If not, see the section following this.)

Start the VMware player or VMware Workstation. Select the VM to modify.

Adding the cable connection to the DIS Virtual Machine The DiagHead Emulator Now that all the setup is done you can run one of the Virtual Machines for the first time, but first the EDIABAS linkage to the Virtual Machine must be started. On the Windows Desktop the DiagHead application should already be running (or visible on the Task-bar if you've minimized it). The DiagHead emulator has some options. Users can determine the actual head software level that is reported to the DIS and they type of head (DK “Yellow Head” on the left or OPS/OPPS on the right). This will affect the displayed image in the connections page of the DIS and the icon in the menu bar. The signal strength adjustment is to adjust what is reported to the DIS and will be reflected in the DIS strength meters. We do NOT recommend changing anything other than the type of head.

Figure 117 - DiagHead Emulator Options page

NOTE! The DiagHead emulator is not required for ADS cables, OEM diagnostic heads or when running SSS Progman with ANY cable type!

Figure 118 - BMW DiagHead Emulator application. Open it up and click "Run" on the menu, and then you can minimize or leave it as you choose. Important!

The DiagHead emulator will indicate correct functioning of the interface between the

If you have an error or a different IP address then there is an error in the configuration. See the section on VMware Network Configuration for the most common error solution. Remember that this is for users with non-ADS or OEM type interfaces! Next start the Virtual Machine this way; here we’re opening the v44 DIS first. Choose it on the VMware favorites by clicking on it.

Figure 119 - VMware Player - Start a Virtual Machine. From the VMware player, press either the green right arrow, or using the menu, press the “Play” button to start the Virtual Machine (here we’ve started the GTI DIS v44). A prompt will appear indicating that the Virtual Machine may have been moved or copied. Leave it at the default "I copied it" and press the "OK" button. However, you can use either option with the same result.

Connecting to the Host Computer through the DIS Now we need to get the DiagHead emulator connected to this Virtual Machine. We do not need to be connected to the auto to perform these steps. NOTE: These steps ONLY apply to users with an K-Line, DCAN, DK-1 “Yellow Head”, OPS or OPPS diagnostic system. Users with ADS will not see this and should jump to “Configure DIS for ADS Cable”, however ADS users should still read though this section and ensure they exit the DIS properly when done using the system. Click the mouse inside the Virtual Machine to change to focus from the Windows host to the Guest VM. On the lower right side of the screen, you will see a button labeled "Administration", click it and the following appears:

NOTE!

In the top left "Free diagnostic heads" window you will see the virtual EDIABAS connection from the Windows host (this is what the DiagHead software does). The name displayed on your system should be the same as this image; it will show BMWDIAG 192.168.68.1 as the name of the Diagnostic head. (Unless using a “Real” head, then it will display the actual IP address and head name instead!) The next step is important. Click “Connecting” and then the following will appear:

Exiting the DIS System It is important to always try to exit the system cleanly. The DIS is a database application and should never be simply powered off. We added an extra process to shut down properly. From the Administration menu, choose "Exit to System Maintenance.” (Note that the “End” button at the top simply restarts the system!)

Configure DIS for your actual Interface NOTE: Please choose ONLY the type of connection that is pertinent to your needs. You should skip to the correct place based upon your actual hardware. However, if you are a user who has several vehicles and several different cable connections you should read and be aware of which mode you last used your DIS configured for. You do have to ensure the changes are made appropriate for the specific interface in use, and consequently reversed or modified when another type interface is in use. This is an overlooked problem for users who have both “ADS” cars and “K-Line” cars, and have a dual-mode ADS/K-Line serial interface.

Configure DIS for OEM diagnostic head OEM heads MUST be connected to the vehicle to test any settings. The LAN cable provides a data only connection. Power to the OEM head is provided by the vehicle power system! The DIS is preconfigured for use with aftermarket diagnostic cables, and uses emulators to convince the DIS that it is talking to an OEM head. When you have an OEM head, the configuration must be modified to accomplish this. We do this from the Maintenance menu. Please select “3 Choose Protocol Translator”

Figure 130 - GT1 DIS Configure Protocol Translator. If you have used this previously with a standard cable, the current translator is the pss-autosoft version. It will need to be switched to the OEM ‘Softing’ version. To see which is active select “2”.

Press the “Enter” key to return to the menu, and select either 3 to switch to the pss-autosoft version or 4 to switch to the OEM version by “Softing”. Once that is complete, press “Enter” to return to the menu, and then restart the EDIABAS internal to the DIS using menu option “1”.

Figure 132 - GTI DIS Restart EDIABAS internal to DIS. NOTE: There are potential issues with any authentic OEM head as far as network configuration internal to the DIS. The DIS uses a fixed IP address of ‘192.168.68.3x” and when using “Bridged” mode in VMware, normally simply connects correctly to a device that is on a different network address range. Or it may not. If this is the case you may need to alter the IP Address of the DIS Virtual machine itself. This is fairly advanced. We will be glad to talk you through it (or show you how to change these settings yourself using TeamViewer). If you suspect this is an issue then please let us know. 87 Copyright © 2010 – 2016 pss-autosoft.net

Configure DIS for ADS cable The ADS cable requires two changes to the general operation of the DIS. First, the “DiagHead” emulator will not work with an ADS cable, so shut it down before connecting. The second is in the configuration of the DIS internals. We need to change a setting in the DISMagic menu. If you haven’t already opened the System Maintenance menu from the Administrative screen, do so.

Figure 133 – GT1 DIS Configure for ADS cable. Select “2. Configure Processes” to get to the process submenu.

Figure 134 0 GT1 DIS Process submenu. The correct setting is to change is so the vm is off. Do this by selecting “3”. Press “Enter” followed by “Enter” to return to the menu. Then choose “2 Apply configuration now” to write the changes to the system. Making this change changes the visible operation of the DIS and it will no longer display the connection information in the menu bar (the strength meters) as the emulator is no longer running. The system will still connect and communicate with your ADS BMW without a problem however.

Connecting to your BMW with DIS Now everything is ready to actually go to your car and connect. IMPORTANT: All the following is based on using an USB or Serial EDIABAS cable. OEM heads will provide far more functionality and speed, and any warning messages you will encounter when using an OEM head are going to be accurate! First of course, verify that the laptop is fully charged. Having the battery fail while programming the car is VERY, VERY bad. If you can't trust the battery, run an extension cord to the laptop! If doing testing without the engine running, verify that the CAR has a fully charged battery. The same problems occur if the car battery dies (or the voltage drops too low) while programming the ECU's. Again, if in doubt, attach an external charger. (Note: Newer cars require LOTS of power!) Get your EDIABAS/OBD cable or OEM Head and find the correct connection point for your car. Connect the cable to the laptop, then the OBD port and if the DiagHead and VM are not already running, start them. Note: Remember, if using the DiagHead to push the “Run” option.

Figure 135 - GT1 DIS - Main Screen. Remember that DIS v57 only does Diagnosis, v44 does Coding and Diagnosis, and the SSS only does Coding. Since were running the DIS v57 here, we're going to diagnose an E46 BMW. Now we happen to have access to a 2001 M47 (110P.S. diesel) powered touring car, so we will use that for our examples. On the home screen, you will see a column of buttons on the right side of the screen. Measuring System, TIS, Diagnosis, and Coding/Program. We have loaded the TIS into both the v44 and v57 so that option is live. The Measuring system software and hardware doesn't exist on the system, so don't go there. The Diagnosis button is what we want.

Using the BMW Software Service Station Start the SSS from the VMware as normal. It loads just like Windows XP since it is essentially Windows XP running inside a virtual machine. It is a little different as it was originally configured as a Windows XP Embedded installation which does not behave like a regular desktop version. This system was designed to run ONLY the Progman application and there was no way to access the base operating system. We have modified it so that the OS is somewhat useable and the Progman can be started separately. This way you can manage printing, communication with the Host OS and more. However, this means that the Progman file must not be loaded until all the Windows background operations complete loading. When the operating system is still working BEFORE it's ready to run the SSS Progman you will see that near the time, there is a red circle with a slash. This indicates that the system is still loading the VMware tools. Once this turns into a VMware icon, you can load the SSS Progman. Depending upon your computer hardware the Virtual machine may go through a "found new hardware" routine which generally prompts an automatic restart. Don't be alarmed and allow it to happen. This is only occurs during the first startup of the SSS virtual machine.

Figure 148 - SSS Progman - Main Windows XP screen. NOTE: If prompted to update the VMware tools, you can do so, but there is a mouse driver you will need to point to here in the VM: “C:\WINDOWS\system32\ReinstallBackups\0000\DriverFiles\i386” when the VMware Tools updates prompts you for a missing file. Updating probably will not cause any problems, but we do not test or verify every update of the tools VMware comes out with. Generally we do not bother to update the VMware tools.

Adding Shared Folders On the screen you'll note that Google Chrome is installed and the My Documents folder is visible on the desktop. If you want to print reports, they are converted to PDF files and stored (unless you change it!) in the My Documents folder. By default there is no direct connection to the Host system as in the DIS, but you can add it simply by adding a folder on the Host system as a shared folder with the guest. Adding shared folders is done from the VMware not from the Guest. Make sure that you've exited the Host by pressing the "Alt" and "Ctrl" key. Once the host is in control, press the "Ctrl" and the "D" keys together to open the Virtual Machine Settings. You will see something similar to the following.

Figure 149 - SSS Progman -Adding shared folders to VM In this image the "Options" tab in the right pane had already been selected, when first opened the "Devices" tab is displayed. On the Options pane, double-click on the Shared Folders to open the settings page. Change the "Disabled" to Always enabled:

Changing SSS Progman Operational Mode IMPORTANT: The SSS is pre-configured for use with the early “K-Line” type interface as this is the most common type used by our customers. If you have a later car that has MOST support or is DCAN you must change the operational mode to the appropriate setting for your car. The same is true if you have an OEM type head, you must change the settings in the SSS before loading Progman. Progman has been modified to work with aftermarket K-Line and DCAN cables. This required some program modifications to make the Progman believe that our cables are actually OEM heads, either EDIC type or OPS (OPPS). This also means that it wouldn’t work with a “Real” head as it. Since our software is designed to work with any compatible cable or head, we built a special utility to allow you to change it as necessary. This utility resides on the Windows XP desktop of the SSS itself and is called “Cable Interface Selection”.

Figure 153 - SSS Progman Cable Interface Selection utility

Configure Progman for K-Line DCAN or OEM Diagnostic Head The Progman application comes from us pre-configured to work with cars that require the EDIC type interface. This is for cars that require the K-Line type communication. (Generally up to the 2007 model year). It this is your car, no need to change anything.

DCAN For cars requiring the later DCAN connection, you would select “DCAN [OPS/OPPS] and press the “Change” button.

DK-1 (Yellow Head), OPS or OPPS If you have a real BMW DK-1, OPS or OPPS you must use the OEM option to return the system to original configuration! Note that if you have a real head you have more limitations on what cars you can use the SSS With. This is due to how the head was programmed by BMW. This is one case where a multirole aftermarket cable is better.

Coding your Car We can't possibly give you all the information on what you can and can't do with the SSS as it will vary by year and model and options of each car. But we can show you how to do some simple coding for the options that dealers love to charge for. Again we'll use the same BMW E46 we used in the DIS demo, and change some parameters using the SSS Progman. First of course, load the Progman from the Guest systems Desktop (it should be in the middle below the image and is titled "BMW PROGMAN"), Double click to start. This will load the BMW Software in an Internet Explorer full screen panel.

Figure 154 - SSS Progman - Coding process The main screen is where you must be when you exit the system. Here you can be reasonably assured that the underlying database is not doing anything and can be safely closed. To close the Progman and return to the Windows desktop, press the "Alt" and the "F4" key together. The Administration button takes you to the nuts and bolts of the Progman configuration. Since it's already configured we don't need to go there. The Book icon is where the help is. You can print some of it out Note: If you go into the Administration section and attempt to modify the Printer settings, do not use the Print Test option as for some reason the programmers ignored the Windows system settings and try to print to LPT1 which doesn't actually exist. ALL other printing works EXCEPT the print test.

There are parameters that are Ignition-Key specific and if you change the parameters for just one key, another key can have different settings. If you click on a title in the left pane, it will provide you with specific details about that programmable function, as in the example below: IMPORTANT! We would like to remind you that this software has the potential to damage or make your car inoperative requiring expensive parts and service. Don't make any changes until you are sure you understand what the end result will be.

Using OEM head with EDIABAS Applications OEM heads MUST be connected to the vehicle to test/view any settings or web pages. The LAN cable provides a data only connection. Power to the OEM head is provided by the vehicle power system! When you have an OEM head you can use it with the EDIABAS tools (INPA, NCS Expert, Tool32, WinKFP, NFS etc.) as long as the EDIABAS is correctly configured AND you successfully “Lock” the head to the EDIABAS. OPS and OPPS heads have a web based management interface and you can simply log into the web page for the device using any browser and ‘lock’ and ‘release the device as needed.

Figure 179 EasyInstall - OPS Web management interface In the above image the OPS head’s ‘web page’ is accessed through the web browser by typing the IP address of the device into the URL address block. Every clone OEM head has only this single web page access, but authentic heads will have more pages available – but they may be password protected. And the password will have been set by the IT department personal that set the head up originally.

Figure 180 EasyInstall - OPS Web management Admin password request DK (Yellow heads) apparently lack this feature but still must be locked. Users have successfully accomplished this by loading the DIS to the main page (where the device is shown as connected) and been able to use the EDIABAS tools. We have not had a DK head, so have not actually tested this (though we have customers who have explained this method as functional). NOTE! It is very important to ‘Release’ the head after you are done using the EDIABAS tools! Failure to do so may lock you out of using this with the DIS or SSS Progman virtual machines.

Figure 181 Check Settings Utility The “Check Settings” utility does not fix anything. Generally you can re-run the “EZConfigure” program which will be located in the start menu, programs, BMW CONFIG. One final note: There are additional updates and data sets available. Please contact us for more information.
