INTRODUCTION The connection of the downtown urban core to the rest of Peterborough finds another link with Ice Forest Park. This vibrant multi-use park space will provide a crucial place of respite and recreation within the urban fabric. Ice Forest Park is envisioned as a rich programmatic experience woven between two distinct site anchors - a signature civic space at Charlotte Street and a serene forest at King Street.

A COHESIVE EXPERIENCE Park users walking through Ice Forest Park will seamlessly transition through a series of unique zones: The experience begins on Charlotte Street, as forms and patterns within the park echo onto the contiguous streetscape; The Commons is the signature civic space that greets pedestrians along this frontage; at the core of the park is the Ice Trail, a distinctive ice skating experience that winds through lines of trees; The Mist Grove is a series of nested playground pods providing a fantastical place for younger Peterborians while ensuring active use of the park as a whole; and finally, the nested topographic forms extend and lead strollers through the winding Ice Forest, a tranquil woodland experience.

A LINK TO THE URBAN FABRIC The Charlotte Street streetscape is the first impression of Ice Forest Park to pedestrians walking from downtown. Therefore, the transition from street to park has been rendered as seamless as possible through ground plane treatment. Paving pattern and materials are extended from the park into this new zone with large bioswales tracing these forms. To slow traffic on Charlotte Street, the sidewalk at the park frontage is expanded into the parking lanes. A mountable curb and site furniture provide for flexible parking as-needed.

A CIVIC CANVAS FOR PETERBOROUGH The Commons is the premier new civic space for downtown Peterborough. An expansive and heavily activated space, it is one of the anchor programs of Ice Forest Park. Striking paving patterns enhance the ground plane while also providing more human-scaled areas of informal gathering. Moveable tables and chairs can be found in these areas for maximum flexibility. Dappled canopy trees with high limbs provide an inobtrusive layer of shade and play with sunlight, while lawn areas further in the park allow for picnicing and sunbathing. A sculptural curved seat wall, large enough for lounging, is the signature element of The Commons. It draws pedestrians further into the park, and provides large amounts of seating for Market days. Total capacity for farmer’s markets is 20 large stalls and 40 small stalls. 3M

ICE TRAIL
A SKATE THROUGH THE WOODS The Ice Trail is at the heart of Ice Forest Park, overlapping and pulling together every other element of the park. In the winter, the trail is refrigerated to create an infinity loop of ice ringed with trees. Revelers can experience skating through the woods, right in the middle of downtown Peterborough. A mix of evergreens and umbrella-canopied trees with a dense understory specifically selected for winter interest surround the skaters with flora. An amphitheater leads children and inexperienced skaters down to a mini-rink away from the traffic of the ice trail and also to a new pavilion that provides amenities and houses mechanical.

The Mist Grove is a place of discovery and wonder nested within gentle planted hills. It is the play element of Ice Forest Park, with playground pods forming a spine from the park amenties at the pavilion to the renovated SKBH. These pods will feature alternative play features such as topographic mounds, abstract tree poles, and mist fountains, creating a surreal environment for children to let their imagniations run wild. The surrounding hardwood forest planting enhances this feeling of an oasis in the woods. A mix of deciduous and flowering trees provide a palette of textures, colors, and bloom through all four seasons, while the understory is composed of ferns and interesting specimen shrubs, kept low for clear viewsheds between parents and children. The Mist Grove will provide a valuable place for Peterborough families to ensure the vitality and success of Ice Forest Park. 1.5 M min

COBBLE PATH
A MEANDERING FOREST STROLL The Wooded Ramble is the most interior portion, and second anchor program, of Ice Forest Park. The serene forest landscape, experienced in winter, is the namesake of this new urban park. It is a place for strolling and calm respite. A series of topographic pods hug a forked and winding cobble path. Each pod is heavily planted with evergreens, multi-stem birches and dense understory, created a highly textured mass of foliage that enhances the intimate scale of the spaces. Where the paths converge is a forest room - a clearing where park users can stop, have a seat or perhaps read a book. The Wooded Ramble terminates at the quieter entrance at King Street or links back to The Commons towards Charlotte Street.
