General Description

Bowen Universal Blowout Preventers give positive protection against blowouts when operating with wire line or small tubing in well service or similar work. These units are lightweight in comparison with other similar preventers, yet they are able to withstand high well pressure. All standard models are for service that involves hydrogen sulfide (H2S). H2S causes embrittlement of some metal parts, and this is why a specially designed style is necessary. There are also two types available: a single, when only one set of Rams is required, and a twin, when two sets of Rams are needed. The choice of style and type is usually based on the intended service. Bowen Universal Blowout Preventers are hydraulically actuated, allowing them to be operated from a safe, remote location. They insure positive shut-in of the well by the action of a set of two opposed Rams which seal off against the wire line or tubing. A set of auxiliary

Stems may be manually operated to assure closure of the Rams in case a hydraulic hose fails or to allow the Rams to be closed and the hydraulic hoses removed. Bowen Universal Blowout Preventers are available in three standard sizes 2-9/16", 4-1/16", and 7-1/16" inside diameter. They are equipped with either a flange top and bottom or union connections. A full range of optional flange connections is available. Please refer to the specifications on page 12. Side outlet flanges for shut-in flow, reverse circulation, or other purpose may be ordered on the Blowout Preventers at extra cost. A Ram Assembly is required for each size of wire line or pipe to be sealed off. Ram Assemblies are available for each Blowout Preventer to accommodate all sizes of wire line. The specifications sheet on page 12 lists the maximum size pipe which may be sealed off with each Blowout Preventer. Each Blowout Pre-

venter, when dressed with the proper size Ram Assembly, will seal off any pipe smaller than the maximum size pipe for which it was designed to seal. Equalizer Valve Assemblies are available at extra cost for each Blowout Preventer. The Flush Type Equalizer Valve allows pressure to be equalized above and below the Blowout Preventer Rams. This facilitates opening the Rams without overcoming high differential pressure. To avoid damage to rams, pressure must be equalized before opening the rams, regardless of pipe size or pressure. Bowen Universal Blowout Preventers are usually operated with a Bowen Hydraulic Hand Pump Assemblies. These Hand Pump Assemblies are available at extra cost. They are well matched to the Blowout Preventers in capacity, are dependable, and are easy to operate. In remote locations, where no power source is available, the Hydraulic Hand Pump Assemblies are quite practical.

Bowen Hydraulic Hand Pump Assemblies are self-contained units which include all the necessary valves, gages, hoses, fittings, and couplings necessary to attach and operate the Blowout Preventer. The Hand Pump is designed to allow pressure to be maintained on its discharge line by closing an integral valve. Pressure may thus be maintained for an indefinite period of time. When operating a twin Blowout Preventer, Dual Hand Pump Assemblies are required. The Dual Hand Pump Assemblies may be employed separately on Single Blowout Preventers. Thus, under certain conditions, several Blowout Preventers may be serviced by Dual Hand Pumps. Quick-Disconnect Couplings, Packing Sets, and spare parts and repair kits for Hand Pump Assemblies are available. Use

Bowen Universal Blowout Preventers are used in conjunction with lubricator assemblies whenever danger of a blowout exists or whenever operations under pressure must be performed. They are usually employed in conjunction with other lubricator components such as Control Heads, Line Wipers, Risers, Tool Traps, Unions, and Stuffing Boxes. During operations, Bowen Blowout Preventers (one or more) are usually located near the bottom of the lubricator assembly. While a Line Wiper, Stuffing Box, or Control Head will effectively pack off around a wire line and contain pressurized well fluid, each is limited in its capabilities to contain a blowing well. The presence of a BOWEN UNIVERSAL BLOWOUT PREVENTER in the system allows the well to be positively shut in if required.

Construction

Bowen Universal Blowout Preventers are composed of a Body, a Ram Assembly, Actuator Bodies, Actuator Nuts, End Caps, End Cap Nuts, Actuator Cylinders, Snap Rings, Stems, Stem Indicators, Seal Assemblies, and Handles. The Body is fitted with appropriate top and bottom flange connections for connection to the wellhead and to a lubricator set-up. Bowen union connections are also available. When the optional Equalizer Valve Assembly is ordered, it is assembled on one side of the Body, extending from above the Rams to below the Rams. It forms a pressure communication which allows the wellhead pressure to be bled into a lubricator set-up above the Blowout Preventer, thereby equalizing the pressure above and below the Rams. This eliminates the necessity of opening the Rams against high differential pressure. This Equalizer Valve is designed to be flush, simple, rugged, and lightweight.

bore of the Body, there is a keyway into which slide the Ram keys to orient and maintain the Rams in proper position relative to the wellhead bore. This Ram cross-bore terminates at its ends in a counterbore (which accepts the two Actuator Bodies) and an external thread (for making up the Actuator Bodies in position). The Actuator Bodies have internal Seal Ring Assemblies to seal off the Stems. They also have internal thread and seal surfaces at their outboard ends into which the Actuator Cylinders are inserted. A hydraulic port near the inboard end of each Actuator Body provides an entrance for fluid used to open the Rams. The Actuator Cylinders are smoothbored and are assembled with the Pistons, Piston Nuts, Race Rings, and Seal Ring Assemblies required to hydraulically actuate the Rams. The Actuator Cylinders are closed by the End Caps which are held in position by the End Cap Nuts.

The End Caps include internal seals which seal off the Stem Indicators. They also include a hydraulic port for entrance of the hydraulic fluid which is used to close the Rams. The O.D. of each End Cap has an external seal which inserts into the Actuator Cylinder. It also has a shoulder which bears against the Actuator Cylinder to maintain the End Cap in place. The Ram Assembly is composed of two Rams which are almost identical. Each Ram includes a Ram Body, Outer Seal, Inner Seal, two Retainer Screws (Inner Seal Screws), Ram Key, Ram Key Cap Screw, Ram Guide, and two Ram Guide Screws. The Ram Guides are assembled on opposite sides of the two Ram Bodies: one on top and one on bottom, allowing them to overlap. Thus, Rams must be maintained and ordered in sets (of two).

Because each Ram Assembly is bored for a specific size wire line or pipe, a separate set is required for each size which is to be packed off. If a blowout Preventer is to be used to pack off several sizes of wire line or pipe, a set for each size (plus spares) should be ordered. The Ram Assemblies are of the Replaceable Seal type, which means only the Seals require replacement when they become worn or damaged. The Inner Seal is composed of two steel plates with a tough synthetic rubber core bonded between the steel plates. The lower of the two plates has a slot into which are inserted the two Retainer Screws (Inner Seal Screws). These screws maintain the Inner Seal in proper position within the Ram Body and retract the Inner Seal when the Ram is opened. The Outer Seal is a molded, one-piece, saddle shaped, synthetic rubber part. It is assembled

around the outside of the Ram Body and along each side. It is in sealing contact with the rear of the Inner Seal, so that together the Inner Seal and Outer Seal form a continuous seal across the well bore end of the Blowout Preventer. The Ram Body is made of steel. Its face has a large slot for the Inner Seal and two narrower slots. One of these narrower slots is assembled with a Ram Guide and the other provides space for the mating Ram Guide when the Rams are closed. A rugged “T” slot is cut into the rear of each Ram Body. The Thrust Nut of the Stem which is used to open and close the Ram is inserted into the “T” slot. The Stem and Stem Indicator are assembled together and work as a unit. When hydraulic pressure is admitted to the Actuator Cylinder, the Piston and the

attached Stem Indicator are forced inward, setting the Ram. The same sliding action opens the Ram when pressure is introduced through the Actuator Body. If the hydraulic pressure fails or the operator wants to remove the hydraulic hoses after the Rams have been closed, the Rams may be mechanically set or locked in position by the use of the Handles attached to the Stem Indicators. The rugged threaded connection between the Stem and Stem Indicator is on a left-hand lead, which causes the Stem to move inward when the Handle is turned to the right. Once the Rams are manually closed, the hydraulic pressure may be removed from the Piston and the Rams will remain closed. The operator should note that the Rams cannot be opened by hydraulic pressure as long as these Stems are manually set. The Stem must be manually retracted while applying opening hydraulic pressure. The Rams cannot be opened manually once closed (whether hydraulically closed or mechanically closed); hydraulic pressure must be used for opening. Operation

Prior to operation, the Blowout Preventer should be examined to assure that it is in good operating order and assembled with the correct (line) size Rams for the operation. The size of Rams may be checked directly by measuring the Rams. An inspection of the tubing or wireline groove must be performed. The Actuator Cylinder may be removed by backing the Actuator Nut from the Body. When the Actuator Cylinder is removed, the Ram will be removed with it. Once exposed, the wire line or tubing groove at the face of the Ram may be measured.

Functioning of the Rams may be checked by using the Handles to run both of the Rams to the closed position. The Stems should then be retracted by turning them to the left until they lightly “bottom” against the End Caps.

Some provision for killing the well in case of emergency must be provided to assure complete safety. This may be in the form of a side outlet pump connection, a “kill nipple,” or other safety equipment.

Now hook up the Hydraulic Hand Pump Assembly, place the 4-way valve in the “Close” position, and apply 100 – 200 psi of pressure to the Pistons.

If the well “kicks” or flows to the point that it is not being safely retained by the Line Wiper (indicated by excessive spray from the Line Wiper), stop any travel of the wire line or tubing, and close the Blowout Preventer Rams. The Rams should be closed tightly enough to seal, but not excessively tight. After the Rams have been closed, wait for the well to settle and the pressure to equalize. During this waiting time the Line Wiper, Stuffing Box, or Control Head may be examined, and worn line rubbers may be replaced if required. Additional mud or fluid may be pumped into the well during this time.

CAUTION: It is poor practice to apply pressure to the Rams without a line (or rod) in place. Do not use excessive pressure when checking the Rams, since this causes needless rubber distortion and extrusion. After assuring that closure of both Rams has occurred normally, reposition the Hand Pump 4-Way Valve to the “Open” position and pump the Rams open. Look into the bore of the Blowout Preventer to make certain that both Rams have been fully retracted by the Pistons. When a twin or tandem set of Blowout Preventers is used, both sets of Rams should be checked. Since one set is checked separately from the other, only one Hand Pump Assembly is required. CAUTION: When checking a twin Blowout Preventer with different size Rams, be sure to check the location of each size to assure that each size set is located in the right sequence, top and bottom, as required for the particular operation. Assemble the Blowout Preventer on the wellhead. CAUTION: Be sure to assemble the Blowout Preventer with the wellhead end down. The Body will have the words “Wellhead this end” in relief or stenciled on one side. A further check is to make sure that the Ram Keys are on the bottom of the Ram bore after assembly. If the Blowout Preventer is assembled upside-down on the wellhead, its mechanical ability will be unimpaired, but it will not seal off.

After the well has stabilized, open the Equalizing Valve and cautiously open the Rams part of the way. When it is determined that the well is under control again, open the Rams completely and resume operation. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the Rams or Ram Guides from entering tools, be sure that the Rams are fully open before resuming operations. To operate the Universal Blowout Preventer with a Bowen Hydraulic Hand Pump Assembly: Check the Pump Reservoir by removing the fill plug on top of the reservoir. Be sure the reservoir is full of fluid. If fluid must be added, Bowen Hydraulic Oil H-5395 is recommended as the best fluid for that purpose and is furnished in all Bowen Hand Pump Assemblies. If this is not available, use a clean, good grade industrial hydraulic fluid, turbine grade oil, or if necessary, a good grade,

7

Bowen Hydraulic Hand Pump Assembly

lightweight lubricating oil. After filling the reservoir, set the 4-Way Valve to the neutral position and pump the fluid through the valve for a minute or two to circulate out any entrapped air. Hook up the two hydraulic hoses: one end of each hose to the Hand Pump and the other end of each hose to the Blowout Preventer. The single coupling end of each hose should be connected to the pump 4-Way Valve outlet, and the harness (double connector) end should be connected to the Blowout Preventer. Connect one leg of the harness end to each Actuator Cylinder, so that both hoses will be connected to both Actuator Cylinders. Be sure that both legs of one hose harness end are connected to the closing ports (outboard), and the two legs of the other hose harness end are connected to the opening ports (inboard). Unless these connections are correct, the Rams will not open and close together. Either 4-Way Valve discharge port may be used as a closing port with the remaining one used as an opening port. The way in which the hose harnesses are hooked up to the Blowout

Preventer Actuator Cylinders determines which port is considered the closing port and which port is considered the opening port. To direct fluid to the closing ports of the Blowout Preventer, position the handle of the 4-Way Valve so that the pointer on the front of the handle points to the discharge port of the 4-Way Valve which is connected to the two closing (outboard) ports of the Blowout Preventer. Close the shut-off valve of the Hand Pump. Actuate the hand pump while watching the pressure gauge. Apply approximately 200 psi of pressure to the Rams. If pressure exists on the wellhead, this should be sufficient to seal off up to about 2,000 psi. If no pressure exists on the wellhead, this amount of pressure will close the Rams tightly enough to assure sealing off against any “kicks” of the well pressure up to approximately 2,000 psi. The ratio of required Hand Pump pressure to wellhead pressure to affect a seal is approximately 10:1. Thus, to seal off 5,000 psi of well pressure, approximately 500 psi must be applied to the Blowout Preventer Actuator Cylinders.

NOTE: The first time the hydraulic hoses are put into service, they will be full of air. This air should be removed by connecting the hoses to the Hand Pump and pumping fluid through them while deflecting the QuickDisconnect Coupling at the opposite end. This will allow the air in the hose to escape ahead of the fluid. Stop pumping when fluid begins to flow from the open end of the hose. The hose end may then be connected to the Blowout Preventer. After filling the hoses in this manner, the pump reservoir should be refilled. Once the hoses are filled, the fluid will remain in them since the Quick-Disconnect Couplings used on Bowen Hydraulic Hand Pump Assemblies are of the self-sealing type. The reason for bleeding the air from the hoses is to eliminate an air bank buildup in the hydraulic Actuator Cylinders. An air bank acts as an undesirable cushion and also presents a minor hazard to the hydraulic hoses. To open the Blowout Preventer Rams, open the Equalizer Valve on the side of the Blowout Preventer. This will equalize any differential pressure above and below the Rams. This is especially important when the Rams have been

8

closed against high well pressure which later subsides. Any well pressure trapped in the lubricator equipment above the Rams will be equalized. As equalization is reached there will be a partial relaxation of the seals. This reduction of friction makes the Rams much easier to retract. Open the shut-off valve on the Hand Pump to relieve the pressure on the Rams.

When a Twin Blowout Preventer is being operated, two Hydraulic Hand Pump Assemblies are required: one for each Blowout Preventer. This allows both Blowout Preventers to be operated individually or simultaneously. Both Hand Pump Assemblies will be identical and will be assembled identically on the Blowout Preventer: one to the upper set of Rams and one to the lower set of Rams. Special Notes

Set the 4-Way Valve to the “Open” position, close the shut-off valve, and pump pressure into the Blowout Preventer Actuator Cylinders, opening the Rams. Continue to pump until approximately 25 psi of pressure is registered on the gauge. This will assure that the Rams are fully retracted. The shut-off valve on the Hand Pump may then be opened.

1. When operating the Bowen Universal Blowout Preventer with tubing size Rams, special care should be taken that Rams are completely open when collars are passed through them. The impact of a collar striking a Ram may damage the Ram to such an extent that the Ram will no longer seal or will be prevented from being fully opened.

If the Blowout Preventer is to be left open and unattended for a considerable period of time, the stem should be tagged “Rams are open”. The hydraulic hand pump assembly may then be disconnected.

2. On occasion, the operator may find it necessary to pick up the tubing string to which the Blowout Preventer is attached. Lifting the string with the Blowout Preventer is not recommended. If the weight of the string must be carried by the Blowout Preventer, care should be taken not to apply any side load to the connec tions, and not to overload the connec tions. Any appreciable side load could rupture the connection and result in great damage to the string and the tools as well as the Blowout Preventer. The tensile strength of the Blowout Preventer connections, provided that these connections are not the smallest on the string, are generally as high as any other connection in the string.

In cases when the Blowout Preventer is to be closed and left closed for a considerable period of time, the Rams should be closed, and the Stems should be screwed in by using right-hand rotation. Tighten them as much as possible by hand only. The Hydraulic Hand Pump may then be secured and disconnected. Once a Bowen Hydraulic Blowout Preventer is closed and the Hand Pump Assembly removed, due consideration should be given to having a Hand Pump Assembly available to open the Rams. Stems provide for emergency closing and safety after closing. The Blowout Preventer cannot be opened by the Stems though; they can only be opened by hydraulic pressure.

3. Never under any circumstance apply tension, compression, or pressure to the Blowout Preventer unless the connections are fully tightened.

4. The practice of resting the weight of the running string on the Ram is detrimental and is not recommended when running tubing. If this becomes absolutely necessary, the Rams should be closed lightly against the tubing, and the tubing should be gently set on the Rams. Dropping the tubing, the tubing collar (or tools) on the Rams, even a foot or two, may result in severe damage to the Rams (or Ram Guides), rendering them inoperable. A weight of more than 1,000 lbs. should never be applied to a set of Rams, and lower weighted objects should be applied very gradually. 5. Hydraulic hose ends, used with Bowen Hydraulic Blowout Preventers, should never be allowed to drop in dirt or grit, or otherwise become contaminated with foreign matter. Any dirt or grit introduced into the Blowout Preventer (or Hand Pump) is very injurious to the equipment. If a hose end becomes dirty, it should be thoroughly washed with a solvent and dried. Only clean hydraulic fluid should be utilized to operate the Blowout Preventer. The use of mixed types, dirty, or very old fluid of unknown origin should not be used. When one of these conditions is known or suspected, the hydraulic system should be flushed with solvent, and the hydraulic fluid should be replenished with fresh fluid. 6. Before disconnecting the lubricator equipment above a Blowout Preventer, caution should be exercised to completely remove any residual pressure or accumulated pressure. This may be done by any suitable valve located above the Blowout Preventer or by use of the Equalizer (Bleed off) Valve on the Blowout Preventer. These Equalizer Valves are available as optional equipment for all Bowen Blowout Preventers.

9

They will effectively bleed off any light fluid accumulation or pressure, and they are recommended in all cases when the Blowout Preventer is to be used with lubricator equipment located above the Blowout Preventer. Maintenance

Maintenance of Bowen Universal Blowout Preventers is very important but very simple. After each use, the Blowout Preventer should be completely disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, repaired as may be required, and reassembled. Complete Disassembly

Complete disassembly of the Universal Blowout Preventer should follow the orderly sequence below: 1. Set the Preventer on a clean wooden floor or low workbench. Rotate the Handles to the right to run the Rams into sealing position, but do not tighten them. 2. Remove the Nuts and Handles from the Stem Indicators. 3. Remove the Quick-Disconnect Coupling halves from the End Caps. 4. Using a small rod in the spanner holes, back off the End Cap Nuts. 5. Pull the End Caps out of the Actuator Cylinder. To detach the Stem Indicator from the Stem, the Stem should be rotated to the right as the End Cap is removed. The Stem Indicator should be removed with the End Cap. 6. Shove the Stem Indicators through the End Caps. Be sure that there are no burrs or ragged wrench marks on the smooth surface of the Stem Indicators before pushing them through the End Caps. If burrs are present, they will damage the seals.

7. Using a pipe wrench, unscrew and remove the Actuator Cylinders. Do not wrench on the threaded portion of the Cylinder since this will damage the threads. 8. Using a small rod in the spanner holes provided, back off the Actuator Nuts from the Body. The Rams will be removed as the Actuator Nut is loosened, allowing the Actuator Bodies to come free. As the Rams are with drawn, exposing the “T” slots, slide the Stems and Actuator Bodies laterally to disengage the Stems from the “T” slots of the Rams. 9. Remove the Snap Rings from the Actuator Bodies, and slide the Actuator Nuts off the actuator Bodies. 10. Disassemble the Rams by removing: A. The Outer Seals. This may usually be done by hand, beginning at each side with the straight portions and progressively removing them. B. The Retainer Screws which hold the Inner Seals in place. C. The Inner Seals. D. The Ram Guide Screws.

11. Using an optional Spanner Wrench if available, unscrew and remove the Piston Nuts. If the Spanner Wrench is not available, use a piece of square keystock or a large screwdriver bit. Back the Stems by clamping on the thrust nut end of the Stem with a pipe wrench. 12. After removal of the Piston Nuts, slide the Piston off the Stems. 13. Shove the Stem through the Actuator Bodies to remove them. Remove any burrs raised on the Stem thrust nuts before passing them through the Actuator Bodies. 14. Examine the O-ring Seals. If they appear to be worn, damaged, or have a pronounced flat surface (permanent set), they should be replaced with new seals. The Non-Extrusion Rings and Seal Protector Rings need not be removed or replaced unless they show signs of damage or advanced wear. Complete Assembly

Before actual assembly begins, all parts should be carefully cleaned, inspected, and greased with a coat of good quality, lightweight grease or lubricating oil.

E. The Ram Guides. F. The Ram Key Screws. G. The Ram Keys. These keys are made close-fitting and may be hard to remove. Loosen them by tapping them with the edge of a soft hammer. Pull them out with a large pliers or by clamping them lightly in a vise. With a hand file, remove any jaw marks or burrs thus produced.

1. Begin by assembling the Rams. Insert the Ram Key into the slot at the bottom of the Ram Body. Insert the Ram Key Screw and tighten it. Slide the Ram Guide into either the top or bottom slot of the Ram Body. Make sure the beveled edges of the Ram Guide are in line with the curvature of the Ram surface so that the Ram Guide does not project beyond the edge of the Ram Body. Insert the Ram Guide Screws into the Ram Body, and tighten them.

10

NOTE: The Rams do not use Ram Guides in all cases. When the Rams are bored for pipe or tubing which have diameters greater than half the face width of the Ram, Guides are not required. CAUTION: In all cases when Ram Guides are required, the operator should check and assure that the Ram Guides are bored for the same size as the Ram faces, so that the Ram grooves match the Ram Guide slots. The operator will note that there are two types of Ram Guides: The 7-1/16" Blow-out Preventer uses the flat type Guide just described, while the 4-1/16" and 2-9/16" Blowout Preventers use the curved Ram Guide which fits around the curved external diameter of the Ram face. In all cases however, the grooves in the Ram face must match the slot in the Ram Guide, of either type, and fit the diameter to be sealed off. 2. If they are not already assembled, assemble the Seals and Seal Ring Assemblies in place in the Actuator Body and End Cap. The O.D. Non-Extrusion Rings and Seal Protector Rings may be opened by hand stretching them sufficiently enough to assemble them in the grooves. The I.D. Non-Extrusion Rings may be compressed by squeezing the ends in until they overlap, reducing the diameter sufficiently enough to enter the bore and be placed into their grooves. Be sure to face the beveled face of the Non-Extrusion Ring against the matching bevel in the groove. When two are required, assemble both Non-Extrusion Rings before assembling the Seal Protector Rings.

Assemble the Seal Protector Rings by overlapping the ends and squeezing them to an undersize diameter small enough to allow passage through the bore and into the groove. After both Non-Extrusion Rings and both Seal Protector Rings have been assembled, install the O-ring between the two Seal Protector Rings. Refer to the illustration to see the position of the rings after assembly. 3. Slide the Stem through the Actuator Body, allowing the threaded end to protrude out the Cylinder end. 4. Slide the Actuator Nut over the Actuator Body, and insert the Snap Ring into its groove in the Actuator Body, securing the Actuator Nut in place. 5. With the turned base toward the Ram and the counterbored face toward the End Cap, assemble the Piston on the Stem. 6. Screw the Piston Nut onto the Stem with its slotted face toward the End Cap. Using the Spanner Wrench with a bar, tighten the Piston Nut. 7. Slide the Ram “T” slot over the thrust nut of the Stem, center it, and pull it up into the counterbore of the Actuator Body. 8. Insert the Ram (with the Actuator Body attached) into the Ram bore. Align the Ram Key with the keyway in the Blowout Preventer Body and slide the Ram into the bore. Place the Actuator Body into the counterbore of the Body far enough to start threads of the Actuator Nut. Screw the Actuator Nut on snug. Using a small rod in the spanner holes or a large pipe wrench, tighten the Actuator Nut.

9. Screw the Stem Indicator onto the Stem approximately 4 turns. 10. Assemble the two Race Rings onto the Stem Indicator. 11. Assemble the End Cap Nut over the End Cap, and slide the Actuator Cylinder (the end without the Seal) onto the End Cap, starting the threads of the End Cap Nut onto the threads of the Actuator Cylinder. 12. Fit the sealed end of the Actuator Cylinder into the Actuator Body and around the Stem Indicator. Thread it into position. Both the Actuator Cylinder and the End Cap Nut may be tightened simultaneously. 13. Attach the Handle to the Stem Indicator, and lock it in position with the Nut. 14. Assemble the Quick-Disconnect Coupling halves into the Actuator Body and End Cap. The Equalizer Valve may be assembled as follows: A. Insert the Seals and Back-Up Rings into the Outer Rings. B. Assemble the Seals and Back-Up Rings on the Connector Tube. C. Insert the Valve Body and By-Pass Body into the Outer Rings. D. Insert the ends of the Connector Tube into the bores in the sides of the Outer Rings.

11

E. Holding the assembly together as a unit, screw the By-Pass Body and Valve Body into the Blowout Preventer Body. Be sure to get the By-Pass Body in the upper port (above the Ram bore) and the Valve Body in the lower port. Simultaneously screw both bodies in place, and make them up tightly. F. Assemble the Seal and Back-Up Ring onto the Valve Stem, and insert the Valve Stem into the Valve Body. Using a socket wrench, screw the Valve Stem until it seats. G. Assemble the Retainer Screw into the Valve Body, and screw it until it is snug. Low alloy steels in these products should be welded only by a skilled welder following recognized procedures, particularly with regard to pre-heating and post-heating. Bowen is not responsible for the quality of welds performed by others.
