Definition A preposition  is a word or set of words that indicates location (in, near, beside, on top of ) or some other relationship between a noun or pronoun and other parts of the sentence (about, after, besides, instead of, in accordance with). A preposition isn't a preposition unless it goes with a related noun or pronoun, called the object of the preposition. Preposition is always used before a noun or pronoun and shows the relation of the noun or pronoun to the other words in sentence.

Preposition for time ex. in, on, at, etc. Preposition for place ex. in, on, at, etc Preposition for direction ex. to, towards, into, through etc. Preposition for agent ex. By, with Preposition for device, instrument or machines. ex. on, by, with, etc. Prepositional Phrase is used after verbs to make prepositional verb. ex. look at, look after, laugh at

Prepositions of Time : at  We use ‘at ’ to designate specific times. Examples :

-The train is due at 11.00 a.m. -Our teacher was teaching biology class at noon. -We have practiced microbiology at 3.00 p.m. this afternoon.

Prepositions of Time : on We use ‘on’ to designate days and dates. Examples :

-The rice seeds are going to come on Monday. - We’re going to have a party of milk on the Fourth of July. -The workers are having their holiday on Sunday.

Prepositions of Time : in We use ‘in’ for nonspecific times during a day, a month, a season, or a year. Examples :

-She likes to jog in the morning. -It’s too cold in winter to run outside. -They started the job in 2013. -He’s going to quit in August.

Prepositions of Place : in, on, at  We use ‘in’ “In” is usually used for place which have some boundary (boundary may physical or virtual). We use ‘on’ to designate names of streets, avenues, etc . We use ‘at ’ for specific addresses.

Examples :

She lives in New York. Students study in library. The wedding ceremony will be held in the hall. There are some books on the table. The teacher wrote a sentence on blackboard. He was flying kite on the roof. Her parents were waiting for her at the entrance of school Dr. Paul lives at 55 Boretz Road in Durham. His house is at the end of street.

Preposition for agent is used for a thing which is cause of another thing in the sentence. Such prepositions are by, with etc. Following examples will help in better understanding. Examples. This book is written by Shakespeare. The work was completed by him. The room was decorated by her. The tub is filled with water.

Different preposition are used by different devices, instruments or machines. e.g. by, with, on etc. Following examples will help in better understanding. Examples. She comes by bus daily. He opened the lock with key.
