For Becky Who Actually Prefers Pepsi Over Coke, But They Do Not Make A Vanishing Pepsi Bottle

The Ultimate Coke Vanish By Devin Knight Congratulations, you have bought one of the most amazing Coke bottle vanishes ever created. I have used this in my act for many years and it always brings the house down. Many magicians have been fooled by the final unrolling of the paper, as they are NOT expecting that.

EFFECT: The performer shows a bottle of Coke, he moves the bottle around so the audience can see the liquid inside and realize it is a real bottle of Coke, a small paper tube is dropped over the bottle and instantly the bottle vanishes. The tube is opened out and shown empty. If the performer wishes, the paper tube can even be tossed out into the audience for examination, as there is nothing to find!

SECRET: To do this effect, you will need the Vanishing Coca-Cola Bottle sold by many magic dealers. This is NOT the rubber Coke bottle. This is the plastic bottle that looks like a Coke bottle. The lower half of the bottle is empty and is simply a shell. The lower half of the bottle is made so the inside looks like a white paper tube. The upper half of the bottle sits on top of the shell. It is plastic and holds real Coke inside of it. A real Coke bottle cap snaps on top. When the upper half is filled with Coke and placed on the shell, it appears to be a real bottle of Coke. A paper tube is placed over the bottle, and the upper half is stolen away under cover of a silk, the tube is shown empty as the audience sees the inside of the hollow bottle. This is a great trick, but you cannot unroll the tube at the end. My improved handling allows you to unroll the tube at the end and toss it out into the audience for a killer ending. I will not describe the basic handling for this trick, as when you buy it; it comes with full directions for the basic method. Once you fully understand the basic workings, refer back to this e-book and get ready to do a real miracle. There are several versions of this trick on the market. Some versions use the larger two-liter bottle and the effect will work with the large bottles too. Other versions have only a painted top that does not allow you to fill it with liquid. These versions will work, but I strongly suggest that you try to find the version that allows you to put liquid in the upper half of the bottle. It adds so much more to the effect. At the time of this writing, the vanishing Coke bottle that I use sells for about $25.00. Check with your favorite dealer or do a Google search on the Internet. I have included a picture of the prop I use so you know what to look for.

HANDLING: This effect will take a little practice to get the timing down. Do not worry, this is an easy trick to perform and does not take a great amount of skill, but you will have to put in some practice to make the effect flow smoothly. Once you have mastered this trick, you will blow away both lay audiences and magicians, as the final unrolling of the paper is a KILLER effect. To do my routine, you will need to use an 18" silk, the one that is included with the trick is a heavier cloth. I prefer to use a semi-transparent silk as this makes the vanish appear even more impossible. You will also need a container in which to ditch the Coke bottle parts. For the sake of explanation, I will use a top hat. This is what I use in my performance, although any box or prop can be used to conceal the Coke parts. It is even possible to hide them behind props on your table. For me, I find a top hat works best. You can experiment once you learn the routine and try using other objects to hide the Coke bottle parts. Be sure to put something soft inside the hat to dull any sound when you drop the shell into the hat.

It Is Best If You Follow Along With The Props In Hand 1-Start out with the Coke bottle set with the upper half filled with real Coke. This should be on your table with the paper tube and top hat or other container. The silk should be draped over the front of the hat. 5

2-Pick up the Coke bottle in your LEFT hand grasping the bottle where the seam is. This ensures the bottle stays together. Move the bottle back and forth slightly so the audience can see the liquid moving around. MAKE SURE YOU KEEP the bottom of the bottle tilted away from the audience. You must be careful to not flash the bottom and expose the white inside. 3-Set the bottle back on the table and pick up the roll of paper and quickly unroll and let it snap back into a rolled tube. 4-With your LEFT hand reach over and pick up the bottle from the bottom, with your right hand pick up the tube and drop it over the bottle. Your left forefinger presses against the tube to prevent it from dropping all the way down. The top of the tube should be even with the bottle-cap. This is important so make sure you have the tube in the right position. Explain to the audience that you are going to attempt to make a bottle of Coke vanish under impossible conditions. That you plan on the bottle being in full view and visibly disappearing. You state that many magicians make things vanish by covering them completely with a scarf. As you say this, grab the silk with your right hand and drape it over the tube (this should appear to be a quick illustration) State you are not going to do anything like this. MAKE SURE THE BOTTOM of the bottle stays in view. Do not conceal it completely. Under cover of the silk, your left forefinger pulls down on the tube about an inch. This allows the top of the bottle to extend above the tube. Your right hand now reaches over and grabs the silk at the same time pinching the top of the bottle between thumb and forefinger. IMPORTANT HANDLING POINT HERE: Please read and understand this part carefully, this move is what sets this trick apart from other versions. Most versions in the past required you to use a thick scarf to conceal the bottle; otherwise, it would show through. With my handling, you can use a thin scarf that is almost see through with no fear of the steal being seen. Here are the workings. A-The top of the tube is flush with the bottle top, so when the scarf covers it lies flat. B-As your right hand comes to take away the scarf, your right hand goes against the front of the tube with the right forefinger being even with the top. C-As soon as the right forefinger is even with the top of the tube, the left forefinger pulls down on the tube an inch. You will find this will allow your right thumb and forefinger to pinch the top of the bottle.

6

D-Lift your right hand straight up and the moment the top gimmick has cleared the tube, push your right thumb toward your forefinger causing the bottom of the stolen top to tilt away from your palm and toward you. If you play around with this, you will see what I mean. E-Due to the small size of the upper gimmick, you will find in this position your right hand completely hides the stolen upper bottle part. Tilting it away from the palm, gives it even more cover. F-Your right hand moves (as your body slightly turns) and places the silk back over the edge of the top hat, as you do so, LEAVE the upper gimmick with the Coke sitting upright inside the hat. MAKE SURE it is sitting upright as turning it sideways may cause some Coke to spill out into the hat. The important thing to understand is that it must appear that you showed them how some magicians want to vanish something by throwing a scarf over it. You will not do that, but instead leave the Coke in view. If you have done this part correctly, you will have stolen away the upper section of the bottle using a thin transparent silk and NOBODY will be the wiser. Even some magicians may be thrown off track here. 5- You will find unlike most Coke vanishes on the market; the bottle gimmick is almost 2/3s of the bottle instead of half. This makes for an even more amazing vanish. You will see in a moment. 6-THE GET READY- Once you have placed the scarf back into the hat, reach over with your right hand and grab the tube at the bottom area, putting enough pressure to hold the Coke shell in place. Your left hand then extends palm up so you can set the bottle on your left palm. Once the bottle is on your palm, loosen the grip on the paper tube and with your right hand raise the tube exposing almost all the red label (be careful not to go too high). The audience will see almost 2/3's of the bottle and this will drive home the fact the bottle is still there. 7-THE VANISH- Follow closely, release the tube with the right hand--DON'T PUSH IT DOWN, because the tube is loose and rolled, it will unroll enough to let it fall to your palm creating a magical and visual vanish. Other versions of the Coke vanish require you to push the tube down over the bottle. Letting it drop, as in my method, creates the illusion the bottle instantly vanished! 8-THE CLEANUP- Quickly reach over with YOUR RIGHT HAND, grasping the paper tube near the bottom, HOLD it tightly so the shell will not fall out. Flash the inside of 7

the tube (from the bottom) so the audience can see it is empty. Your left hand goes for the silk in the hat as your body turns toward the table. IMPORTANT THIS SHOULD BE PEFORMED WITH THE MAGICIAN STANDING AT THE LEFT SIDE OF HIS TABLE. Never stand behind a roll-on table as this looks unprofessional. Turn slightly to your right as your left hand picks up the silk, the paper tube is held at a slight angle with the bottom of the tube inside the hat. You will find if you loosen the grip on the tube the Coke shell will slide into the hat. The bottom of the tube is at the back of the hat and as the left hand moves forward with the silk; the shell is released in the hat by the right hand. 9-THE BLOW THROUGH- As your right hand moves forward (AFTER DITCHING THE SHELL) it turns so now the bottom of the tube is facing the audience. The left hand has grabbed the silk. The magician brings the tube toward his mouth as the left hand tucks the silk in from the rear of the tube. Now you blow the silk into the air with a flourish further proving the tube empty. Catch the silk with your left and drop into the hat. Checkpoint: If you have done this correctly, it will appear you dropped a paper tube over the Coke bottle and it vanished in full view, then you quickly grabbed the silk and blew it through the tube. This is what will take practice to get the timing down. Ditch the shell as you go for the silk. If you do this properly, even seasoned magicians will miss the ditching of the shell. They will not suspect it either, because they know that there would be nothing to stop you from blowing a scarf through the shell. Many magicians use to place a silk in the shell so when the bottle vanished, they could blow the silk into the air proving the tube was empty...magicians watching will think you are doing the same thing, they will never suspect that you ditched the shell. In other versions, this is impossible, as the paper tube has been glued or stapled together making a tight fit for the shell. This will not allow the shell to secretly fall into the top hat. After you have caught the silk, toss it back into your hat and walk FORWARD well away from the table and hat retaining the tube in a ROLLED POSITION. Pause and unrolled the tube while you smile showing it to be flat. Believe me they will fall off their seats...unrolling the tube is a KILLER finish and even well-informed magicians 8

may be deceived by this move. If you wish, you can toss the paper tube out for examination. Give this the practice it deserves, as other Coke vanishes do not allow such a clean handling, nor allows you to unroll the tube for a killer finish. Such an effect will leave your audiences wondering where the bottle could have gone! Enjoy. Devin Knight 2013
