Falkland Islands- In the Falklands, there is an infantry company group and an Engineer Squadron (81 Sig Sqn (V)) at an operational base at Mount Pleasant Airfield (MPA). They have been there since 1982 and are still there. After the 1982 war between Argentina and the UK, the garrison was enlarged and bolstered with an RAF base at Mount Pleasant on East Falkland. 2. Cyprus- In Cyprus, we retain two Sovereign Base Areas after the island's independence. We have been there since 1960 and currently have two resident infantry battalions, Royal Engineers, 16 Flight Army Air Corps and Joint Service Signals Unit at Ayios Nikolaos operating there. The bases serve as forward bases for deployments in the Middle East. British f orces are also deployed separately with UN peacekeeping forces on the island. 3. Brunei- We are in Brunei for training purposes. We have an infantry battalions and a Bell 212 Helicopter Flight based there. This comprises of one battalion from the Royal Gurkha Rifles, British Garrison, Training Team Brunei (TTB) and 7 Flight Army Air Corps. The Training Team Brunei (TTB) is the Army's jungle warfare school, while the small numbers of garrison troops support the battalion. 7 Flight Army Air Corps provides helicopter support to both the Gurkha battalion and the TTB. We have been in Brunei since 1961 until present. 4. Ascension islands- We are in the Ascension islands as it is used control a vital communications site between South America and Africa. Aslo, when we first gained the island, we used it to prevent the French from using it as an escape route. We currently have have around 40 infantry and some from the 81 Sig Sqn (V). 5. Gibraltar- We are in Gibraltar mostly for training purposes. Thanks to its good climate and rocky terrain, it makes a good training position, and used as a stopover for aircraft and ships en route to and from deployments East of Africa. We have been there since 1704. Operating in Gibraltar are; British Forces Gibraltar, Royal Gibraltar Regiment, Joint Provost and Security Unit, Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron, RAF Gibraltar and Gibraltar Services Police. British Army garrison is provided by a native regiment, the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, which has been on the Army regular establishment since the last British battalion left in 1991. 6. Nepal- We are in Nepal for the focus of the projects that have been upgrading and expanding copper and fibre infrastructures. Squadrons involved are the 81 Sig Sqn (V). We have been there since 2005. We are also there to help the recruitment process, as well as facilitate transit and support welfare. 7. Iraq- In Iraq, we are helping to restore essential infrastructure and services and provide security. We have also maintained a small training facility. Involved in the operations are the 81 Sig Sqn (V), and an extra 4,000 troops. We have been there since April 2003. 8. Northern Ireland- We are in Northern Ireland supporting the police in the defeat of terrorism and the maintenance of public order. We have been there since 1920 and have around 3,200 troops based there. Since 2007, we have been part of Operation Helvetic which replaced Operation Banner. 9. Afghanistan- We are in Afghanistan because ‘it became a source of terrorism’. They are protecting civilians from insurgents, supporting more effective governance at every level. Getting rid of the Taliban regime and Al Qaeda and making sure they never return. Involved in this are ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) and ANSF (Afghan National Security Force). They have been there since 2001. 10. Pakistan- We are in Pakistan for training purposes and using there paramilitary Frontier Corps over a period of 3 years, from 2009 until 2012. We have around 24 instructors there along with 6 American Army personnel. 11. Sierra Leone- British troops were initially sent to help with the evacuation of foreign nationals, but have gone on to provide logistical support to the beleaguered UN operation, and training for government forces. We have been there since 1999 and have around 1,000 troops there. The British Army were deployed to Sierra Leone, a former British colony on Operation Palliser, to aid the government in suppressing violent uprisings by militiamen, under United Nations resolutions.

12. Belize- Currently, we are in Belize to provide a defence force and for training. We have been there since the 1940’s and have the Bri tish Army Training and Support Unit Belize and 25 Flight Army Air Corps. At the request of the Belizean government, British troops remained in Belize after independence in 1981 to provide a defence force. 13. Canada- We are in Canada for training purposes. In Canada, we have the British Army Training Unit Suffield and 29 (BATUS) Flight Army Air Corps operating. We have been in Canada training since 1972. It is a training centre in the Alberta prairie which is provided for the use of British Army and Canadian Forces under agreement with the government of Canada. 14. Germany- We are in Germany because we remained there after the Second World War. We have been in there since 1945 and plan to leave in 2020. Forces declined considerably after the end of the C old War. In Germany, we have the 1st (UK) Armoured Division operating. 15. Kenya- We are in Kenya for training purposes and have been there since 2010. Troops from the British Army Training Unit are there to train the Kenyan Security force. We have a training centre in Kenya, under agreement with the Kenyan government. It provides training facilities for three infantry battalions per year. To prepare for High Intensity Operations in Afghanistan on Op HERRICK 8, 1 R IRISH Battle group conducted a Battle group live-firing exercise in Kenya. 16. Diego Garcia- British troops are in Diego Garcia as we have a base there and are protecting it. It is part of the British territory in the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Fewer than 50 troops are stationed there. It has been a Military base since the 1970’s. 17. Kosovo- We are in Kosovo mainly for peacekeeping after the recent war. We have roughly 1,130 troops in Kosovo aiding the peacekeeping. Britain is to deploy hundreds of troops to Kosovo in a move likely to revive claims that the government is demanding too much from its armed forces. Regiments include 2 Rifle regiments, a light infantry battalion of about 600 soldiers and around 500 other infantry soldiers who are going to help maintain public order in the newly independent Balkan state. We have been there since 2003. 18. Georgia Georgia-- We are in Georgia mainly for peacekeeping, but also to train alongside their army to exercise and learn new techniques from them. We have been in there since 2008. Regiments involved were the Army’s 4th battalion (aka the Parachute regiment). Our troops are also providing help with a strong line of soldiers protecting the ‘Georgian Frontier’. 19. Liberia Liberia-- We are in Liberia to help clean up after the war they have been in. As well as this, we are delivering humanitarian aid and helping to rebuild the infrastructure of the country. Another reason is the training of Liberian forces. We are teaching them about the British standard technique and other skills. We have been there since 2003. 20. Bosnia & CroatiaCroatia- We are in Bosnia & Croatia for protection purposes, providing armed escort to Humanitarian aid Convoys. Around 2,400 troops are in Bosnia and Croatia. We were deployed there in November 2011. In these two countries, over 100 regiments have been deployed there since us being there. Some corps involved are; armoured units, infantry, royal regiment of artillery, royal engineers, royal corps of transport, royal army medical corps and royal logistics corps. Exercise ‘Red Stripe’ is an exchange exercise run with the Jamaican Defence Force (JDF), who sends a regiment to be trained by the British in exchange for a regiment in the British Army being sent there for jungle training. We have been in Jamaica since 1816.
