About the Composer R. Douglas Helvering has quickly established himself as an important new voice in choral music composition. Already, at the age of 27, he has had his music performed across America and the world including such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival. Mr. Helvering has earned degrees from Westminster Choir College and the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He has studied with Dr. Z. Randall Stroope, Dr. Stefan Young (a student of Nadia Boulanger), and Dr. W. Kenton Bales. Mr. Helvering is a member of ASCAP, "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities", and the Golden Key National Honor Society.

About the Text “Ubi Caritas” is taken from the antiphons sung during the ceremony of the Washing of the Feet at the Mass of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday. As in the entire Mass of the Last Supper, this hymn is intimately connected with the Eucharist and thus is often used during the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Recent tradition has the first line as “Ubi caritas et amor” (where charity and love are), but certain very early manuscripts show “Ubi caritas est vera” (where charity is true). The chant melody associated with this text, which dates back to the 5 th century, is very well known and often used. It is a particularly flowing and moving chant melody that conveys the message of the text well. This arrangement makes use of the chant melody in its original form as well as in a rhythmically altered form. This piece also makes use of part of the English translation to further convey the loving nature of the text.

Ubi Caritas Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. Exultemus, et in ipso iucundemur. Timeamus, et amemus Deum vivum. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero.

Where charity and love are, God is there. Christ’s love has gathered us into one. Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him. Let us fear, and let us love the living God. And may we love each other with a sincere heart.

Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Saecula per infinita saeculorum, Amen.

Where charity and love are, God is there. Unto the ages through infinite ages, Amen. Look for more exciting and profound choral music offerings at
