W h i l e e v e r y o n e i s w a t c h i n g i n t e n t l y , a real r o p e is s e e n to e m e r g e f r o m the basket and slowly rise up into the sky. F o l l o w i n g this, a p r e v i o u s l y s e l e c t e d card is s e e n to p e e k o v e r t h e e d g e o f t h e b a s k e t , t h e n s l o w l y w i g g l e and c l i m b t o t h e t o p of t h e r o p e ; t h e e f f e c t b e i n g a s if t h e p i c t u r e suddenly c o m e s t o l i f e .

P a i n t t h e cardboard dead black and t h e n , w i t h w h i t e paint, outline t h e s c e n e s h o w n in t h e s k e t c h . N e a r t h e b o t t o m of the picture attach a small wicker b a s k e t w i t h a f l a t back, s u c h a s sold in a n y d e p a r t m e n t s t o r e , and divide it into t w o vertical c o m p a r t m e n t s , f r o n t and rear. N e x t , c u t a p i e c e of s o f t , pliable r o p e s u c h a s o r d i n a r y c o t t o n c l o t h e s line. T i e a black t h r e a d to o n e end and a small w e i g n t to t h e o t h e r . Coil t h e r o p e in t h e r e a r c o m p a r t m e n t and run t h r e a d up f r o n t of p i c t u r e , and t h r o u g h a pinhole n e a r t h e top. E f f e c t : P e r f o r m e r e a l l s a t t e n t i o n t o a l e n g t h of r o p e , t h e e n d s of w h i c h h e t i e s t o g e t h e r , f o r m i n g a loop. Then a s p e c t a t o r is a l l o w e d t o c u t t h e r o p e r i g h t in t h e c e n t e r o f t h e loop. T h e t w o c u t e n d s are held w i d e a p a r t and s h o w n to b e a c t u a l l y s e p a r a t e d , w i t h t h e k n o t n o w in t h e middle of t h e rope. C u t a p i e c e of thin cardboard t h a t will f i t s n u g l y in t h e b o t t o m , and c o v e r t h i s w i t h black v e l v e t . On t h e v e l v e t , g l u e a small p i e c e of wood a s s h o w n in s k e t c h , and slip all i n t o b o t t o m of b o x . U p o n u n c o v e i n g t h e hand, the r i n g s are d i s c o v e r e d o n t h e f i n g e r s once m o r e .

Effect: Performer s t a t e s he will illustrate a bedtime s t o r y .
