TUBES: Must not be bent, split, distorted or corroded. PLANKS: Must not be split more than 300mm (12”), warped or damaged. LADDERS: (1) Must be supported on both feet. (2) Must extend 0.9m (3’) above landing point. (3) External ladder must be inclined at an angle of 75o(4 vertical to 1 horizontal). (4) Both side rails of ladder to be secured.

1 SILLS (SOLE BOARDS) used to support scaffold posts on soft surfaces. Minimum size 765mm (30”) long, 225mm (9”) wide and 38mm (11/2”) thick. 2 BASE PLATE min. size 150mm x 150mm x 6mm and installed below all posts (standards). 3 POSTS (STANDARDS) must be plumb, straight, on firm ground, and not near the edge of any excavation. Distances between posts will depend on the loading. For tube and coupler scaffolds, the maximum allowable distances between posts is as follows: DUTY

MAXIMUM LOAD

LIGHT

120 kg/m2 (25 lbs/sq.ft) 240 kg/m2 (50 lbs/sq.ft)

MEDIUM

MAX. DISTANCE BETWEEN POSTS ACROSS WIDTH ALONG LENGTH

1.2m (4’)

1.8m (6’)

4 BEARERS (TRANSOMS) run across the width of the scaffold on each row of posts and are spaced vertically nor more than 2m (6’6”) apart. For tube and coupler scaffolds, bearers are to be fixed on top of the runners (not underneath) and extend at least 100mm (4”) beyond supporting runners. 5 RUNNERS (LEDGERS) run along the length of the scaffold on each row of posts and are spaced vertically at not more than 2m (6’6”) apart. 6 BASE LIFT (KICKER LIFT) is positioned about 150mm (6”) above the ground.

7 WOOD SCAFFOLD PLANKS (BOARDS) to be at least 38mm (11/2”) thick and 225mm (9”) wide, and - gaps between planks on platforms shall not be wider than 25mm (1”) - 38mm (11/2”) thick planks to be supported by bearers or board bearers spaced not more than 1.5m (5’) apart (see Fig. 1) - 50mm (2”) thick planks to be supported by bearers or board bearers spaced not more than 2.4m (8’) apart. - planks to overhang their end support by at least 150mm (6”) and not more than 300mm (12”). (see Fig. 2) 8 BRACING Scaffold is vertically braced for the full height across the width and along the length to provide structural stability. All braces must be attached as close as possible to the post/runner/bearer intersection. 9 TOPRAIL is the top horizontal rail of the guardrail system, to be 0.95m 1.15m (38” - 45”) above the platform. 10 MIDRAIL is the horizontal rail installed midway between the toprail and platform. 11 TOEBOARD of a minimum size 100mm (4”) high x 25mm (1”) thick. General note to 9, 10 and 11: Toprails, midrails and toeboards are installed on the inside of support posts on all open sides and ends of platforms. 12 SELF-CLOSING DROP BAR to be installed inside posts whenever there is a step-through opening in the guardrails. 13 SUPPORTED SCAFFOLDS with a height (H) of over four times the minimum base dimension (W) must be restrained from tipping by ties or equivalent means.
