Nuestra amiga Cecilia esta en Mexico para ayudarnos virtualmente hoy. Hi Cecilia, how’s it going? Hi Brian! Do you know the expression, “how’s it going?” Supongo que es igual de, “como te va”? Si? Si o como Que tal? En los estados unidos, los jóvenes hablan esta expresión muy rapidamente, Suena como Howsitgoin. Howsitgoin. Es un poco extrano, pero no necesitaas contentar esta pregunta con, “I’m fine, thank you” o algo asi. Howsitgoin solo es un saludo. Puedes contestar, “Hey, howsitgoin?”

Anyway, Ceclila, are you ready to travel once again to America and practice your English? I am always ready! OK, here we go …. Imagine you are Los Angeles International Airport in California … Imaginate estas en el aeropuerto en Los Angeles . LA! Que bueno! I always wanted to go to LA! OK! Well, actually, you are just waiting for a flight to Phoenix, Arizona … estas esperando un vuelo a Phoenix, Arizona. You are going to visit a friend in Phoenix. Vas a visitar a un amigo en Phoenix. Your flight is number 16-35. Que raro, en ingles se dice 16-35. De hecho, es 1635, o 1,635. Pero en ingles a menudo se separa los numero asi. Speaking of Italy, maybe you should order a cappuccino at the coffee shop? OK, good idea. I will get a cappuccino. OK, you’re at the Starbucks now. Estas en el café. There is a young man working there. He is kind of cute. Sabes cute? Por supuesto. Significa lindo. OK. It is your turn to place your order. El chico te dice el siguente … [Hi. Howsitgoin. Well, actually, I’ve never been there. But I hear it’s really nice. Are you visiting somebody?] OK, Cecilia, he’s making small talk with you! Sabes “small talk”? Sii, es igual de charla o charloteo. Right. So, what do you say? Did you understand him? No totalmente, no. El se encanta Phoenix, pero no ha estado alli. Y el me preguntó algo … Yes, he did. No recuerdas? Preguntale, “puedes repetir la pregunta?” OK … sorry, can you repeat the question? [Sure, I just was wondering why you’re going to Phoenix …] Ceclia, entiendes “I was wondering”? Como se dice eso en español? I was wondering. Me preguntaba. Right!! El se pregunta por que estas viajando a Phoenix. What do you say? Well, I am going to visit a friend.

[Ah, cool. I hope you have a great trip! Here’s your cappuchino!] Thank you! Bien dicho, Cecilia! OK, ahora, que quieres decir? Algo mas? Hmmm, no. I should probably go back to the gate. OK. Venga. [airport sounds] OK, you walk back to the waiting area for your flight … caminas a la sala de espera. De pronto, hay otro annuncio. [Jayson warchester … pick up any white paging phone] Hmmm, no la entiendí. Cecilia, era este annuncio importante? I don´t think so. Creo que ella estaba llamando a algn por el busca … Yes, the name sounded like Jason Warchester … OK, So, you sit down … te sentas y sorbes tu café. Entonces, oyes algo mas en el sistema de megafonio. `[final boarding call for Phoenix] Oh, Cecilia? Importante, o no? Siiii. He oido los numeros 16-35 y la palabra Phoenix. Ok!! It’s time to board the plane! Tienes que embarcarte ahora. OK! Well, here I go!! Thank you for helping me in the airport! You’re welcome! Thank you for your help! +++ THAT’S ENGLISH! A menudo hispanohablantes me dicen, I would like to speak English without an Accent. “Me gustaria hablar ingles sin acento.” Bueno. Me gustaria hablar español sin esto acento horrible tambien. Pero por que? But why? Why do we worry about our accent? Por que preocupamos sobre el acento? Are we hiding something? Estamos ocultando algo? To tell you the truth, I like the sound of English spoken with a Spanish accent. La verdad, me gusta el sonido del ingles hablado con acento español. For me, an Accent is Orly a problem when it impedes understanding. Para mi, es un problema solamente cuando el acento dificulta la comprensión. But it´´s trae, we live in a World of people who The hardest sound is the “i.” A little bit Hello What, why, When, who Th R in the middle of a word. Don´t flick it. That’s English!
