The Trumpet Call Pastor’s Corner

We got off to a strong start last Sunday in our new Sunday morning schedule with two strong worship services and a great unity breakfast in between. Thanks to all who attended, and a special thanks go to those who prepared, served, and cleaned up the breakfast. Our youth had a great deal to do with the success of the breakfast! This Sunday, we begin our new discipleship classes in both of our buildings. Please see the complete listing of classes on page 2. It is not too late to sign up, and all older youth and adults are invited. One of the discipleship offerings is called CATCH, taught by the Rev. Bob Hachtman. You will be hearing more about this program over the next several months, as it has the potential to move our church to a more “outward” stance toward the community around us, and to help us provide a more hospitable environment to those who come to visit. To begin to introduce the principles of CATCH, I’ll preach a three part series starting this Sunday called, The Invitational God. We will begin with the fact that God invites us to be in relationship, long before we invite anyone else to come with us to church. Invitation always begins with God, but never ends with God; we are called to be invitational in the way we live our Christian lives. As you know, our full time music director, Andrew Waddell, left in early August to begin his graduate studies at Drexel University in Philadelphia. We have enjoyed the talents of many of our members and friends on a volunteer basis since that time. Still, many have been wondering when hirings will take place in our music ministry. It’s important to know that our Staff Parish Relations Committee has been working on this since last April. Over time, we have come to discern that because of the difficulty in finding someone able to lead both contemporary and traditional music well, the best thing at this time will be to split the full-time position into two part-time positions.

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Pauline Fox, our organist, will become our Director of Traditional Worship on an interim basis, effective immediately. Pauline will, in addition to her continued organ duties, be responsible for selection of music and finding those in our congregation and in the community to provide special music and other aspects of worship. If you attend the contemporary service at 10:45 a.m., you have appreciated the talents of Doug Malefyt for many years. Also effective immediately, Doug will be our Interim Director of Contemporary Worship, working closely with me and all those who contribute so much to worship every Sunday. I’m sure you share my gratitude for both Pauline and Doug and the tremendous talents they have already brought to our congregation! We are in need of persons to direct our chancel choir, bell choirs, children’s chimes, and children’s choir. Please turn to page two to see these job postings. Even though they are being advertised “in house” at this present time, if you know of others in the community with directing talents, by all means let us know and invite your acquaintances to apply. I look forward to seeing you this Sunday!

Outreach/Opportunities Stephen Ministry Each person’s suffering is a separate story. Some people are ambushed by a sudden crisis. Others are shackled with chronic problems. Some have quiet, nagging pain that has accumulated over decades and is only now recognized. Since every person’s pain is unique, each possible care receiver’s story is distinct. Each will need an explanation about Stephen Ministry that is appropriate to his or her situation. Don’t suffer alone when help may be available to you.

Sunday, September 20th, 9:30-10:00 a.m. in the Bridal Lounge. All women invited.

A Delicate Subject Recently, our maintenance staff has discovered toilet paper rolls stuffed into toilets in our restrooms. This appears to be happening on Sunday, as the evidence is found on Monday morning. This has the potential to cause serious plumbing issues if not stopped immediately. Please supervise your children when they use the restrooms, and immediately report any suspicious activity to our weekend sexton, Anthony James or to Trustee Chairperson Connie Moyer.

ESUMC Musicians to perform in Bethlehem Three of our ESUMC musicians will perform in the American Guild of Organists Lehigh Valley Chapter opening program of the 2015-2016 season. Pauline Fox will play a variety of 5 duets with Joe Dorsch on baritone sax and Kaitlyn O’Brien as duo-organist. This free public event is Saturday Sept. 19 at 10 a.m., in Cathedral of the Nativity, 321 Wyandotte St., at the south end of the Rt. 378 bridge in Bethlehem. Feel welcome!
