LISTENING TRANSCRIPT Douglas Hey Rose, what are you doing, there? Rose I’m checking my MySpace page. Douglas Oh yeah, everyone is on there now, huh? I had a Facebook page a few years ago, but I just got bored with it. Rose I used to be like that, but now I really like it. There are a lot of games and other things you can do on the site. It’s fun when you understand how it works. Douglas Maybe that’s my problem. Rose OK, that’s it. How about I create a MySpace page for you? Douglas I am going home at five, so... Rose It’s no problem, I can work on it for a few more hours. Douglas Hours? Does it take that long? Forget it! I’m not interested. Rose It doesn’t always take that long, but when you are online you can spend hours there. Douglas Doing what? Rose Making new friends, chatting, playing games, you know. Douglas Yeah Rose, I just don’t think this is for me. I can keep in touch with the people I already know through e-mail, I don’t really need to make more friends that I have to remember to talk to. Rose OK, but I really think you need to get out more and meet new people, though. Douglas I agree, but I just prefer to do it the old-fashioned way, and meet people in person.

LISTENING TRANSCRIPT Vanessa Eric, when did you get back? Eric I got home this morning but I feel like I’m still in Paris. Vanessa I’m sure you do. So tell me. You were there for the whole summer. How was it? Eric Oh, it was great. Actually, I stayed there for about two months. It wasn’t very long but still, it was amazing. Vanessa You stayed with a French family, right? What were they like? Eric They were very nice. It was my second time in Paris, so I didn’t want to visit the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre again. This time they took me to places that aren’t as well-known, and it was great. I saw how French people really spend their time. Vanessa Wow, that sounds like fun! Did you eat many different kinds of French food? Eric Oh yes. The family I stayed with cooked for me every day. We also went to a few really nice restaurants. Vanessa How nice! I’d like to visit France, too. Eric I’d like to go again, but not during the summer. Vanessa Well, my problem isn’t the time of the year, but the language. I don’t speak French very well! Eric Come on! You can learn there!

LISTENING TRANSCRIPT Kelly So what do you think, Mark? What’s the most important invention in the last 100 years? Mark I don’t know, Kelly. I’d say something like the aeroplane, or the car... We can travel so much faster now using these means of transport! Kelly That’s true, I guess. But I think that there are more important things like computers and phones. Especially mobiles, right? I never see you without your mobile. You can’t live without it! Mark Oh come on, that’s not true! In fact, I’m going camping this weekend, and I’m not taking my mobile with me. It will be easy. I don’t think I’ll have a problem at all without it. Kelly Yeah, right. There’s no way you’ll be able to make it. You use it too much! Mark OK and what about you with your computer? The first thing you do when you get home is turn it on and check your e-mails. Plus, you spend most of your night surfing the Net. Kelly Hmm, you’re right, I do that. Mark Well, maybe we could both spend some time away from our favourite gadgets. Why don’t you come camping with us this weekend? Kelly OK, but you’ll have to leave your mobile at home!

Karen Why do you want a pool? We’re going to be on the beach. You can swim in the sea! John The sea is dirty, though. And think of all the fish and other sea creatures in it. Do you really want to swim in that? Karen Don’t be silly, there’s nothing wrong with swimming in the sea. John Still, I prefer a pool. And room service. I hope they have good room service. Karen Are we going to use the room service? I thought we’d be able to try the local restaurants. They are known for their great food. LISTENING TRANSCRIPT Kelly Oh, Dave. You won’t believe what happened! Dave You didn’t make a fool of yourself again, did you? Kelly Unfortunately, I did. In front of my whole English class! Dave OK, so what happened? Kelly Well, I had to give a report in front of the class. I was really nervous, because I hate talking in front of people like that. At some point when I was talking, someone’s mobile started ringing. Dave Oh, I hate that, it really gets on my nerves when people don’t turn off their phones in class. Kelly Oh, I know! It’s really annoying! Anyway, it was ringing and ringing, and no one was turning it off. It was driving me up the wall. Dave So what did you do? Kelly I asked the class whose phone it was, and to turn it off. No one did anything! Dave How rude! Kelly Yeah, well just wait. I was getting angrier and angrier, until finally, I started shouting at them to turn the phone off. That’s when one of my classmates held up my purse, and told me that it was MY mobile that was ringing! Dave Oh no... that’s terrible. Did you apologise? Kelly Of course I did, but that didn’t help. They were really upset with me for shouting at them. Dave Yeah, you really shouldn’t have done that. Kelly I know, I know. And I also shouldn’t leave my mobile on during class!

Woman Uh huh, is that why you got fired after only a month in your last job? Man Actually, I quit that job. I didn’t like the money I was getting. Woman I see. What is the longest job you’ve had? Man Hmm... I was a call centre agent for about four months. I think that was my longest time in one place. Before that, I worked at a restaurant as a cook for about three months. Oh, and I had a summer job as a lifeguard for a few weeks. Woman The summer is a lot longer than a few weeks, isn’t it? Why didn’t you last the whole summer? Man That’s a bit funny, actually. I can’t swim, you see. I really don’t know why they hired me. Woman I don’t know why either. It certainly seems that you’ve had too many jobs and you have never had the time to become a good employee at any of them. Man Hey, that’s not very nice. I am actually a very good employee. I am always on time, I don’t sit around doing nothing. I work very hard. I just haven’t found a job I like yet. Woman I’m sure that’s true. Still, you can understand why I can’t hire you, can’t you? I really need someone with more experience. Man Yeah, sure, I understand. Thanks anyway.
