THE NCLEX CHANNEL { Transmission-Based Precautions}

Session Objectives:   Objective 1: Identify necessary personal protective equipment when following standard, airborne, contact, and droplet precautions.    Objective 2: Recognize disease processes that require airborne, contact, droplet, and neutropenic precautions.  considerations when caring for   Objective 3: Explore appropriate nursing considerations clients who require airborne, contact, droplet, and neutropenic precautions.   •





Points of Emphasis:   Point 1: Strict handwashing is the single most important strategy to reduce the spread of infection in all health care settings.    Point 2: Health care personnel should wear a gown and gloves when entering the room of a client on contact precautions.    Point 3: Health care personnel should wear a mask for care within 3 feet of a client on droplet precautions.    Point 4: Airborne precautions requires a fit-tested N-95 respirator be worn by health care personnel while in the client’s room.   Point 5: Transport of clients on transmission-based precautions should only occur for medically necessary diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. •
