TQM Case 6 February, 2013

The Parable of the Green Lawn

I. Problem Statement: What changes should Mr. Fast N Furious do in order to improve his lawn?

II. Objectives    

To help Mr. Fast N Furious improve his lawn. To identify, minimize, and prevent errors during landscaping and cultivation. To know the methods in landscaping and cultivation. To guide Mr. Furious with his expenses for the lawn.

III. Alternative Courses of Action ACA 1: Strategic Change: Re-landscaping of Mr. Furious’ lawn First, the weeds and other things that are not meant to be in his lawn should be removed, till the soil, and fertilize it. Then he will replant the patches of grass and sprinkle new seeds to the lawn. He will also have to maintain the lawn, so it will be uniform. Also, instead of Mr. Furious and his children doing the work for the re-landscaping, they will first hire a gardener for the initial work or change processes. Then by the time the grass is uniform and good, Mr. Furious and his family may do the maintenance of the lawn. Pros:   

It will definitely fix the appearance of the lawn The growth of the plants will be uniform and consistent since there are no weeds and the soil is fertilized. The lawn will have a proper maintenance than before

Cons:   

It will cost a lot for Mr. Furious’ part. It takes time for the changes to take full effect. It will waste Mr. Furious’ initial investments for his lawn.

ACA 2: Process Change: Change in maintenance routine Instead of doing his usual maintenance routines, Mr. Furious may use other maintenance method, he may remove the sprouts and weeds instead of letting them spread into the lawn. He may also water the lawn in morning and in late afternoon instead during the noon. Pros:  

Lesser costs than ACA 1 Lesser work and effort than in ACA1

Cons:  

The change in appearance of the lawn will not be fully guaranteed. It takes time for the changes to effect.

ACA 3: Change Management: Combination of the two ACAs Mr. Furious will apply the two ACAs simultaneously. Pros:    

The change will be more effective The change will take effect faster The expenses will be used more efficiently The growth of the plants and its maintenance is more guaranteed

Cons:  

It will be too costly It requires more time and effort

IV. Recommendation The student recommends the ACA 3 or the re-landscaping and change in maintenance routines. This is the most efficient way for Mr. Furious to improve his lawn since the change will be effective and the costs will be more efficient.
