LUBRIZOL TEST PROCEDURE TP-N01013 Edition : November 1, 2011 2011 Previous Edition : October 7, 1996 1996
Determin Determin ati on of Gardne rdn er Color Numbe umb er Scope
Procedure
This method covers the measurement of color of varnishes, oils, resins, nitrocellulose lacquers, fatty acids, polymerized fatty acids, and similar transparent colored liquids by comparison with arbitrarily numbered glass standards. standards. A sample's sample's color can can indicate batch contamination contamination and and reproducibility. This method should conform to all of the requirements outlined in the ASTM method D1544.
1. Fill sample tube with sample to be tested and place in the test compartment of comparator. For solid samples, first fill a sample tube with pieces of the sample and melt in a hot water bath. Do not not heat to a temperature more than 5.6°C (10°F) above its cloud point.
Theory
2. Rotate the color wheel disks in the comparator.
A specified sample tube is filled with the solution to be measured and placed in a comparator or suitable photometer. Color comparisons using a comparator are made by simply revolving a disc with mounted glass color standards until a color match is obtained between the sample being tested and one of the glass standards. The glass color standards are based on a color scale equivalent to the 1933 Gardner color standard. The color scale conforms to ASTM specification D-1544. The measurement can also be made using a specially calibrated photometer which determines Gardner color by comparing transmitted light to international color standards.
Equipment 1. Gardner color comparator: Gardner Model 212 or equivalent. or
LICO 50 Photometer, and sample cuvettes suitable for the LICO 50, available from Dr. Bruno Lange GmbH Berlin, Willstatterstr. 11, Postfach 19 02 29, 4000 Dusseldorf 11, Telephone (0211)52 88-0, Telefax (0211) 5288-106.
For the Color Comparator Method:
3. Determine which glass standard most closely matches the sample in terms of brightness and saturation. Ignore hue differences. For the LICO 50 Photometer Method (see the instrument manual for detailed descriptions of the principles of operation and instructions): 1. Fill a round cuvette with approximately 3 mL of the sample to be analyzed. 2. Press the "Gardner" program key to enter into Gardner color determination mode. 3. Insert the cuvette into the LICO 50 sample compartment. 4. The Gardner color value will be directly measured and displayed by the instrument. Read and record this value.
Data Reporting Report the color number of the matching standard, or the directly read Gardner value, as N1013. Enter Pass or Fail as N1013B.
2. Glass sample tube. 3. Heating bath.
