Dear Colleague
Welcome to your new catalogue from Pearson I hope the Pearson name won’t be new to you because, in fact, you’ve been working with us for many years. All our imprints – Heinemann, Longman, Causeway and Payne Gallway – have been part of Pearson for some time and this year we are making the Pearson connection a little clearer. Like you, we are completely committed to excellence in education. You’ll have come across our work in the UK through names like Edexcel and BTEC in assessment and qualifications, and Fronter and Phoenix in learning technology. And this year I’d like to tell you a little more about Pearson and all it can do for you.
Pearson: helping people progress, everywhere We aspire to be the world’s leading learning company by helping everyone progress in their lives through education. We believe in every kind of learning, for all kinds of people, wherever they are in the world. Working in over 100 languages, we have built an international reputation for raising achievement through innovation in education. Every business in the Pearson family is connected to learning. Some are household names, like Penguin and the Financial Times, others you may not know so well. But all of them demonstrate our commitment to the very highest standards in learning around the world. And all of them aspire to our vision, summed up in the words ‘Always Learning’.
Pearson: where learning comes together We hope you’ll be impressed by the breadth of our capabilities and begin to see the benefits of joining them together. Our technology already enables teachers to personalise learning for individual students, provides assessment data to help learners identify where they need to improve, and brings our resources and content to students in engaging, challenging and supportive ways, in and out of the classroom. We believe that technology will offer huge benefits to all of us involved in learning in years to come.
Pearson: inspiring inspirers like you We employ many people who have worked in education all their lives. We all share the same goals: to inspire and support teachers like you; to raise educational standards; and to use data and technology imaginatively to benefit all learners.
Pearson. Always learning To achieve these goals, we listen to what people like you have to say. Every day we learn lessons big and small. ‘Always Learning’ is not just what we believe, it’s what we do. To learn more about Pearson and how it is evolving, visit www.pearson.com/uk With best wishes,
Jacob Pienaar Managing Director, Pearson UK Schools and Colleges

Chapter 7 Oceans on the edge
Investigating how mangrove swamp is used
Objectives
How and why are some ecosystems threatened with destruction?
Describe the impacts of human activities on marine ecosystems such as mangrove forest.
The term ecosystem describes a grouping of plants and animals that is linked with its local physical environment – through use of soil nutrients, for example. The oceans, covering two-thirds of our planet, are home to distinctive marine ecosystem communities composed of fish, aquatic plants and sea birds – as well as tiny but very important organisms such as krill and plankton.
Explain how marine food webs work, and why they become damaged.

MEDIUM
Mangroves are areas of swampy forest, found in estuaries and along marine shorelines in around 120 tropical and subtropical countries. Many are densely populated, especially in coastal Asia (Figure 2). Mangrove plants have evolved to tolerate daily tidal flooding and high salinity. Long twisting roots anchor the trees against a constantly ebbing and flowing tide (Figure 3). The roots trap mud, making a habitat for lobster and prawn.
MEDIUM
Figure 3: Mangrove forest
Build Better Answers
Coral reefs HIGH
Study the distribution of mangrove swamp shown in Figure 2. Identify the main populated areas where mangrove swamp grows. (3 marks) Basic answers (0–1 marks) Name only one or two areas, or are very imprecise, writing things like ‘there is a lot on the right hand side of the map’.
Deep ocean (volcanic activity can support life)
Continental shelf MEDIUM
These species used to be fished in sustainable ways that preserved the mangrove swamp. However, prawns can be more intensively harvested from ponds dug in mud on cleared land. Global demand for prawns (worth £30 billion a year) has caused widespread removal of mangrove vegetation. Mangrove swamp naturally covered 200,000 km2 of the Earth’s surface but only half that area now remains, often because of this prawn aquaculture. Vietnam’s Mekong Delta is a typical site where mangrove trees have been removed, leaving a flat muddy plain studded with blue plastic-lined ponds.
River estuary HIGH
HIGH MEDIUM
Mangrove removal creates problems of coastal erosion and loss of nursery grounds for fish. Crocodiles, snakes, tigers, deer, otters, dolphins and birds all lose an important habitat. Carbon dioxide stored over centuries in the rich mud beneath the swamp is released when the trees are removed.
LOW Biodiversity
Mangrove swamp is also nature’s defence against tsunamis. The enormous ocean wave that struck the coast of south-east Asia in 2004 killed 230,000 people. Where they were still in existence, mangrove trees shielded lives and property. In Thailand, recent conversion of mangrove habitat into prawn farms and tourist resorts close to Phuket contributed significantly to the catastrophic losses experienced there.
Figure 1: Biodiversity in the oceans’ ecosystems
Good answers (2 marks) Correctly identify Asia and Central America as named locations. Excellent answers (3 marks) Also provide more specific details of Asian locations (naming the west coast of India and Indonesia) or mentioning north-west and south-east Africa.
Coral reef ecosystems have an incredible level of biodiversity (their variety of plant and animal species). Although they cover less than 1% of the Earth’s surface, they are home to 25% of all marine fish species. Biodiversity is also high in waters close to the edges of the world land masses – above the continental shelf. There, species enjoy shallow warm water, enriched with silt nutrients from river estuaries. Even in the deep ocean, where light cannot penetrate, unique ecosystems are found. Underwater volcanic activity can create densely populated sites of plant and animal life. Here, often at great depth, life has evolved that can survive truly extreme conditions of heat and pressure.
M07_EXGE_SB_GCSE_5018_C.indd 102
Prawn aquaculture can also cause serious pollution problems. Antibiotics and pesticides used in the prawn pools frequently leak into the delicate ecosystem of neighbouring areas.
8/4/09 15:31:27
M07_EXGE_SB_GCSE_5018_C.indd 103
Quick notes (Mangrove swamp): • Human use of this environment was originally sustainable. • Because of commercial pressures, unsustainable exploitation now takes place. • Vegetation removal and pollution damage local ecosystems and settlements.
t
Skills Builder 1 Study Figure 3 (a) Name one adaptation shown that helps the trees survive in a wet tidal environment. (b) Describe two ways in which undisturbed mangrove forest can support human activities.

Understanding GCSE Geography for AQA A Case Study
Watch the teachers and students at Wellingborough School as they use the resources – www.pearsonschools.co.uk/AQAGCSEGeogcasestudy.
Wellingborough School is an independent school situated in Northamptonshire, with approximately 900 pupils. Peter Lowe is the Head of Geography and he has been using Understanding GCSE Geography since September 2009 with his students. Student Book
Controlled Assessment Workbook
“The use of bullet points, the use of bold text and the very careful use of diagrams, photos and maps makes it an appealing read for the students.”
“They like the structure of the pages themselves. The fact that there is a mixture of text and some visual information… and that it’s all in one place, makes it a really good resource.”
Peter Lowe, Head of Geography
Richard Campbell, Teacher
I like the way it is set out because it’s easier to learn from.
“I’ve found it really useful. It provides quite a lot of information and templates to use when you’re doing fieldwork.”
Year 10 Student
ActiveTeach CD-ROM “One of the advantages of the ActiveTeach on the interactive whiteboard is that you can move between pages very quickly… It covers the content superbly and for our best pupils, as well as those that struggle with the subject, they find there’s plenty there that they can get their teeth into.” Peter Lowe, Head of Geography
Year 10 Student
Revision Toolkit “In the past revision has largely been down to the individual teacher teaching from the front. Now with Revision Toolkit it will be possible to pick up all the chapters, all the topics which the pupils have done and work through those in a much more structured way.” Peter Lowe, Head of Geography
