DOWNHOLE MOTOR TOOLS TOOL JOINT & NOZZLE IDENTIFIER TORO DOWNHOLE TOOLS TOOL JOINT & NOZZLE IDENTIFIER
The Toro Tool Joint Idenfier is a simple yet eff ec ecve way to determine most oil field rotary shouldered connecon types. This can be be an invaluable invaluable tool when the connecon idenficaon marking is worn or in ques on. The Toro Tool Joint Idenfier also includes a bit nozzle idenfier for checking the bit nozzle orifice.
Both measuring
instruments are combined into a compact and portable ruler format that can be made readily available should a queson arise in the field.

The following rotary shoulder connecons can be determined by using the Toro Tool Joint Idenfier: API Numbered Connecons (NC)
API Regular Connecons (REG)
PAC
Extra Hole (XH)
Full Hole (FH)
Hughes (H-90)
Internal Flush (IF)

DOWNHOLE MOTOR TOOLS TOOL JOINT & NOZZLE IDENTIFIER HOW TO USE THE TORO TOOL JOINT IDENTIFIER Pin Threads:
First, you will need to determine the thread count by inch using the thread cut outs at the end of the idenfier (Figure 1) Figure 1
Connue to use the thread cut outs unl you have a match. In Figure 1 the thread cutout idenfies the pin as 4 threads per inch.
When idenfying a pin connecon, first determine whether it has a cylinder radius or a stress relief groove. (Figure 2)
Figure 2
If your pin connecon does not have a relief groove, use outside
diameter calipers to measure the cylinder radius next to the pin shoulder. (Figure 2)

Using the Tool Joint Idenfier, place one side of the outside diameter calipers in the pin notch and the other side on the idenfier to measure the size. (Figure 3, Figure 4)

In this example, because we determined deter mined that the connecon is 4 threads per inch, the Toro Tool Joint Idenfier has designated the pin threads as NC 46. ( Figure 5)
NOTE: Because we determined that the pin is 4 threads per inch, the nearest measurement is NC 46 (this is why we must know how
many threads per inch the connec on on has before measuring it) In this example we know that the threaded connec on on is NC 46.

DOWNHOLE MOTOR TOOLS TOOL JOINT & NOZZLE IDENTIFIER HOW TO USE THE TORO TOOL JOINT IDENTIFIER, PIN THREADS, CONTINUED
To measure a pin with a relief groove, you will need a couple of rubber bands or another another set of hands. You will also fi
need another Tool Joint Iden
er or a straight edge.
Figure 6
Place two straight edges on opposite sides of the pin and hold in place with rubber bands or have someone else hold them in place. (Figure 6)
Using outside diameter calipers, take a width Figure 7
measurement from both sides of the straight edges next to the shoulder and around the relief groove. Be sure to subtract the thickness of the straight edges before checking the thread size on the tool joint iden fi e er. r.

Using the Tool Joint Idenfier, place one side of the outside diameter calipers in the pin notch and the other side on the idenfier to measure the size. If straight edges were used on a pin connec on on with a relief groove, then be sure to subtract the thickness of the straight edges before Figure 8

NOTE: Because we determined that the pin is 4 threads per inch, the nearest measurement is NC 46 (this is why we must insure we know how many threads per inch the connec on on is)! In this example we know that the threaded connec on on is NC 46.

HOW TO USE THE TORO TOOL NOZZLE IDENTIFIER
The Toro Tool Joint Idenfier is a simple yet eff ec ecve way to determine nozzle nozzle size in drill b bits its nozzles. To determine fi
fi
nozzle size, insert the small end of the Nozzle Iden er into nozzle ori ce. Check the measurement at the loca on where the Nozzle Idenfier stops inside the orifice. This measurement will be the diameter of the orifice.
The front side of the Nozzle Idenfier shows increments in 1/32 of an inch. The number on this side is typically used to idenfy the nozzle type (i.e. #12 nozzle, #16 nozzle, etc.). Front View
The back side of the Nozzle Idenfier shows the same measurement markings as the front side but in 1/8 of an inch increments.
