Although the title suggests three separate pieces this very much one work. Each of the three movements share material both harmonically and rhythmically. In an attempt to expand the harmonic palette the piece is based on a row of twelve notes that is also used in its derivative four semi-tones higher. This is however not a serial piece it is freely-atonal in nature. The row is there to provide not only chordal harmony but also serves in a motivic function. The lines become interwoven in one another however, the ear still grabs hold of a few recurring ideas both harmonically and thematic. The structure is Slow-Fast-Slow and gives a sense of a quasi A-B-A structure.
