ABSTRACT

Resort is a place of luxury, comfort and relaxation with peace of mind. One feels relaxed and peaceful in natures lap. Living with nature is the concept of resort. Living and healing with the help of nature is the concept of Ayurvedic health resort. Health caring since ages has been a predominant part of man‘s life. Ayurveda

directs that Prevention is better than cure. For prevention physical Fitness-diet, yoga, food according to the season is required. In Ayurvedic health resort one can get rejuvenated, treated by Ayurvedic therapies, Ayurvedic A yurvedic food, and yoga. Etc. Ayurvedic health resort is a resort having all the basic requirements of a resort plus pl us health facilities like health therapies, gymnasium and fitness centre, yoga and meditation centre. It has sports and recreational facilities including swimming  pool. A health resort also provides special health packages. Workshop and trainings are also conducted over here. The concept is to design a health resort that imparts the feeling of wellness rather than illness by integrating cultural values with therapeutic environment. The  benefit of designing an Ayurvedic health resort to reflect age-old traditions and values include the acceptance of the Ayurveda, improvement in the quality of health and increased participation in Preventive Care. This is not a medical facility, facilit y, there are no signs of illness. This should be a place- an escape from the t he frenzied hospital atmosphere, a home of silent reflection to regain a sense of peace. The challenge is to develop an environment for healing in the 21St century- an era focusing on a Preventive, proactive and holistic approach. A solution that incorporates service integration, cost effectiveness, efficiency and increased ease of use.

1. THESIS PROPOSAL 1.1 Background

India has been a popular travel destination for American tourists seeking serenity and spiritual growth. But in recent years, wellness travel to India has exploded.   Wellness travel -- any tourism associated with the goal of maintaining or enhancing one's  personal well-being. As more people embrace overall healthier lifestyles lifest yles at home, we are now seeing those  behaviors translate and be integrated into their travel and vacation habits. Spa experiences, healthy eating, opportunities for personal growth, yoga and meditation, fitness, stress reduction and holistic health are among the experiences sought by wellness travelers, according to the 2013 Global Wellness Tourism Economy Report. India's wellness offerings are very understandable -- they have yoga, meditation and Ayurveda. "Right now, those are things that are really resonating with people... the kind of things that people want and need are the things that India is offering." Along with India, China, South Korea, K orea, Russia and Germany are some of the other top t op wellness tourism destinations. Still, the U.S. remains the top destination for wellness travel, with $167.1 billion in expenditures and a total of 141.4 million wellness trips taken annually (followed by Germany at 49.3 million). 1.2 Statement of problem and research questions

2. INTRODUCTION 2.1 WHAT IS A RESORT?

The sole purpose of a resort, in the classic sense, is to afford its users a place for escape or restoration from the world of work and daily care. “

A resort is a place where families intent to spend their holidays or weekends for relaxation or recreational so that, one can give dynamism d ynamism to their leisure time. People in urban areas are especially busy all through the week and look for ways to refresh and rejuvenate themselves. They are usually located away from the hustle bustle of cities and towns. People can go for long derives and reach the resort which is generally self-contained. A resort is a full-service lodging facility that provides access to or offers a range of amenities and recreation facilities to emphasize emphasi ze a leisure experience. Resorts serve as the  primary provider of the guests’ experience, often provides services for business and

meetings and are characteristically located in vacation-oriented settings . 2.2 ORIGIN AND HISTORY The origin of resorts can be traced t raced back to the second century centur y B.C. to the public baths of

Rome. The first baths were small, modest and separated the genders. Eventually, the baths  became larger, more elaborate and were opened to both men and women. These baths were large public buildings built at the public expense. Some were even built by wealthy emperors. Most baths were free but few had small entrance fees. Baths were much like resorts of today  because of all the amenities offered at their location. Most of them also includes gyms, library, shops, lounges and theatres. The facilities were used for health and social purposes. 2.3 TYPES OF RESORTS

2.4 HEALTH AND WELLNESS RESORT

Wellness resorts and retreats offer short-term, residential programs to address specific health concerns, reduce stress, or support lifestyle improvement. It also provides the natural and ancient medical treatments like Ayurveda treatment, naturopathy treatment and homeopathy treatment, which helps in rejuvenation and reduces stress. Yoga and meditations were also practiced to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state. In some wellness resorts patients are treated holistically. 2.4.1 Health and Wellness Tourism in India

India is well known for tourism and now emerging as a health tourism destination because of its ability to provide high quality treatment at low cost. India is unique as it offers holistic medicinal services such as yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, allopathy and other systems of medicine. Millions come every year to get treated and then enjoy their recuperative holidays across India. India provides world class medical facilities with hospitals and specialized multispecialty health centres providing their expertise in the areas of Cosmetic Surgery, Dental care, Heart Surgeries, Coronary Bypass, Heart Check-up, Valve replacements, Knee Replacements, Eye surgeries, Indian traditional treatments like Ayurvedic Therapies and much more, practically covering every aspect of medicine combining co mbining modern treatments with traditional experience. Medical tourism is a growing sector in India. India's medical tourism sector is expected to experience an annual growth rate of 30%, making it a $2 billion industry by 2015. As medical treatment costs in the developed world balloon - with the United States leading the way - more and more Westerners are finding the prospect of international travel for medical care increasingly appealing. An estimated 150,000 of these travel to India for low-priced healthcare procedures every year. Health tourism market has two segments, medical tourism and wellness tourism. The term medical tourism denotes patients seeking ailment of complex diseases outside their home country. Wellness tourism includes taking holistic treatments like Ayurveda spa, meditation etc to rejuvenate body, mind and soul. Health tourism is being popularized in Kerala and in hill resort of Lonavala close to Mumbai. It offers facilities for invigorating yoga, massages and naturopathy herbal applications. It is practiced in restful environ, supplying healthful diets. An extensive course of treatment is the motto instead of administration of a medicine. India’s Ministry of Tourism has recently been investing in development of infrastructure for major spiritual tourism destination s, as well as the development of “Wellness Centres” (which tend to offer Ayurveda and holistic/alternative healing) in new locations around the country

14

Health resorts operate on the basis of the Spa Act. In order to obtain the status of a health resort, the commune must have:

•Local climate with healing qualities.   •Unique, natural deposits of medicinal resources.  •Healthcare entities providing services within the scope of spa treatment by highly qualified

medical personnel. •High standard hospital facilities and sanatorium centers with complete back-up facilities. •Devices intended for using natural medicinal resources.  •Requirements defined in regulations of the law on environmental protection and shaping of the environment. •Appropriate area that allows division into spa protection zones. •Complete technical infrastructure. 2.5 AYURVEDA Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine from India that uses a constitutional model. Its aim is to provide guidance regarding food and lifestyle so that healthy people can stay healthy and folks with health challenges can improve their health.

Ayurveda is at present well integrated into the Indian National health care system, with state hospitals for Ayurveda established across the country. In the United States, the practice of Ayurveda is licensed in complimentary heath care. There are several aspects to Ayurveda that are quite unique: •Its recommendations will often be different for each person regarding which foods and

which lifestyle they should follow in order to be completely healthy. •Everything in Ayurveda is validated by observation, inquiry, direct examination and knowledge derived from the ancient texts. •It understands that there are energetic forces that influence nature and human beings. These forces are called the Tridoshas. 2.5.1 Basic Principles of Ayurveda comprise of:

•Five Universal Elements- Panchmahabhootas- Aakash (Space or ether), Vayu (Air), Teja or Agni (Fire), Jala (Water) and Prithvi (Earth). The Panchmahabhootas therefore serve as the

foundation of all diagnosis and treatment modalities in Ayurveda and has served as a most valuable theory for physicians to detect and treat illness of the body and mind successfully. •Psyche Components-Sattya, Rajas and Tamas

15

•Seven steps of physiology- ‗Sapta Dhatus‘- Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Meda, Ashti, Majja, Shukra. •Vata, Pitta and Kapha- The Tri-Doshas. 2.5.2 Besides these three body types there are also the body types which have the traits of two of these. So seven Doshic Prakrutis are:

Panchakarma is a set of five therapeutic treatments administered to the patient for the complete detoxification of the body. According to Ayurveda, the detoxification of the body is essential before undergoing any other major treatment. Even for healthy people, it is recommended to undergo this treatment once every five years to rid the body of all the impurities and chemical toxins it accumulates over the years. In some cases, Panchakarma alone can cure many chronic diseases that will not require any further treatments afterwards 1.Purvakarma-the pre-purification preparation Before the actual detoxification begins, there the re is a need to prepare the bo body dy in prescribed methods to encourage it to release toxins. Two procedures are used for this : Snehana and Swedana. Snehana is a full-body massage with medicated herbal oils. The oil is massaged into the  body in a particular manner in order to move the toxins towards the gastro-intestinal tract. The oil also penetrates the skin leaving the superficial and deep tissues soft and supple, thus helping to remove stress and nourish the nervous system. Snehana is given for 3 to 7 days as indicated.

19

Swedana is sudation or sweating. It is given every day immediately following Snehana. An herbal concoction may be added to the steam to further loosen the toxins from the body. Swedana liquefies the toxins and facilitates their movement towards the gastro-intestinal tract. Pradhanakarma-The main Purification process 2. Vamana- Vomiting Therapy When there is congestion in the lungs causing repeated bronchitis attacks, colds, cough or asthma, the Ayurvedic treatment is therapeutic vomiting. This therapy eliminates the Kapha causing the excess mucus. 3. Virechana -Purgation Therapy When excess bile (Pitta) is secreted and accumulated in the gall bladder, liver and small intestine, it tends to result in rashes, skin inflammation, acne, chronic fever, vomiting, nausea and jaundice. Ayurveda suggests in these conditions, the administration of therapeutic purgation or a therapeutic laxative. 4. Nasya- Nasal Administration The nose is the doorway to the brain and also the entryway to one’s inner self. The nasal administration of medicated drops is recommended for an excess of bodily humors accumulated in the sinuses, throat, nose or head areas. They are eliminated through the nearest possible opening –  the  the nose.

5. Basti-Enema Therapy The predominant location for Vata is the colon. Basti therapy involves the introduction of herbal decoctions and medicated oil preparations into the rectum. It relieves constipation, digestive problems, chronic fever, colds, sexual disorders, kidney stones, heart pains,  backache, sciatica and various joint pains. Many other Vata disorders such as arthritis, rheumatism, gout, muscle spasms and headaches can also be treated with Basti 2.6 NATUROPATHY

Naturopathy is a science of health and healing and a drugless therapy based on well-founded  philosophy. It has its own concept of health and disease and principles of treatment.  Naturopathy is a system of medicine that advocates harmonious living with constructive constructi ve  principles of Nature on physical, mental, moral and spiritual planes. It has great health  promotive and restorative, and disease preventive as well as curative potential. A naturopath will recommend a treatment plan that will draw on the body’s ability to heal itself. Treatments are natural, safe and gentle and can be personalized to suit the individual needs of the client. A naturopath may use herbal medicine and a range of other modalities to comprise a treatment program.

20

2.6.1 Principles of Naturopathy

Body heals itself. Main cause of disease is enervation Deposit of metabolic end-products in the body is disease. Acute disease is a remedial process-itself a cure. Food is a building material, does not increase vitality.

Fasting provides an opportunity to the body to heal itself. Germs do no cause the disease but are found in the diseased conditions. Exercise or physical activity keeps the balance between nutrition and drainage. External treatments whether natural, allopathic, ayurvedic or homeopathic-give only relief, do not cure.

    

 

 

Patient’s own will to get well, determination and faith are necessary things for nature

cure treatment. 2.7 YOGA Yoga is derived from the word ―Yuj‖. It means to add, to sum up and to connect. Yoga is a way to connect and to add the internal and external energies. When things get connected

flow of energy is enhanced and gets regularized. Energy is best in a flowing mode. Not in a stagnant mode. Stagnancy brings incapability in expressiveness, makes things complicated and puzzled and leads to sedative stages. Yoga is designed to concentrate but this concentration is not full of selfishness. Yoga asks to concentrate on the cosmic energies. This helps one to bind with the cosmic energies easily. Once, one is in touch with the outercosmic energies influx of energies starts by themselves. Energy tends to flow from higher to lower potentials. Cosmic energies are richer and these start to flow inside and a person starts to enjoy this flow and enriches with the higher energy levels with the time. 2.7.1 History of Yoga

The Vedic Samhitas contain references to ascetics, while ascetic practices (tapas) are referenced in the Brāhmaṇas (900 B.C.E. and 500 B.C.E.), early commentaries on the Vedas. Techniques for experiencing higher states of consciousness in meditation initially had only a slight philosophical underpinning, and were unconnected with Samkhya doctrines. These techniques were developed by the shramanic traditions and in the Upanshadic tradition. 2.7.2 Eightlimbs of Yoga
