1. GENERAL The thesis report should be organized in a scholarly manner, an account of the original research work of the candidate leading to the discovery of new facts/or techniques of correlating the known facts (analytical, experimental and design). It shall demonstrate a quality as to make a definitive contribution to the advancement of knowledge and the candidate's ability to undertake sustained research and present the findings in an appropriate manner. 2. NUMBER OF COPIES: Three copies are to be submitted, through the Thesis Coordinator - one for each Department Library(soft copy), Panel guide (soft copy), and one hard copy for the candidate to take after the evaluation. 3. SIZE OF THESIS Size of thesis shall not exceed 150 pages of typed matter reckoned from the first page of chapter I to the last page of the Appendix. 4. ARRANGEMENT OF CONTENTS OF THESIS The sequence in which the thesis material should be arranged and bound shall be as follows: (a) Title Page (b) Bonafide Certificate (c) Synopsis (d) Acknowledgement (e) Table of contents (f) List of Tables (g) List of figures and photographs (h) List of Symbols, abbreviations or Nomenclature (optional) (i) Chapters (j) Appendices (k) References (l) Comments of Examiners

5. PAGE DIMENSIONS AND MARGINS The dimensions of final bound copy of the thesis report shall be 290mm x 205mm. Standard A4 size (297 x 210mm) paper may be used for preparing the copies. (Landscape format) The copies submitted shall have the following page margins: Top edge : 10 to 15mm Bottom edge : 35 to 45mm ( space for title may be adjusted within this margin ) Left side : 35 to 40mm Right side : 10 to 15mm The thesis should be prepared in good quality white paper preferably not less than 80 gms/sq.m. Tables and figures shall conform to the margin specifications. Large size figures and drawings shall be photographically or otherwise reduced to appropriate size before insertion. 6. MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION: The candidate shall supply a typed copy of the manuscript to the advisor/s for the purpose of approval. In the preparation of manuscript, case shall be taken to ensure that all textural matter is type written to the extent possible in the same format as may be required for the final thesis. Hence some of the information required for the final typing of the thesis report is included in this section. Headings of all items 2 to 12 listed in section 4 should be typed in capital letters without punctuation and centered, 50mm below the top of the page. The text shall commence 4 spaces below this, heading. Page numbering of all items 1 to 8 should be done using lower case Roman numerals and the pages thereafter should be numbered 1,2,3..... etc. 6.1 Title Page: A specimen copy of the title page is given in Appendix 1.

FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE MANIPAL UNIVERSITY THESIS MANUAL (2014- 2015) : B.Arch - IV YEAR 6.2 Bonafide Certificate: Using double spacing for typing bonafide certificate shall be of the following format: Certified that this thesis titled ".................................................. is the bonafide work of (name of candidate)........................ reg no ………………. who carried out the work under my supervision. Certified further that to the best of my knowledge the work reported herein does not form part of any other thesis or dissertation of the basis of which a degree or award was conferred on an earlier occasion on this or any other candidate. 6.3 “Dedication", if there is any shall be placed between Certificate and Synopsis. 6.4 Synopsis: A synopsis shall be an essay type of narrative not exceeding 400 words, outlining the problem, methodology used and summary of findings. 6.5 Acknowledgement: It should be brief and should not exceed one page when typed in double spacing. 6.6 Table of Contents: Table of contents should list all material following it as well as any material which precedes it. The title page, bonafide certificate and acknowledgement will not find a place among the items listed in the table of contents, but the page numbers of which are in lower case Roman letters. One and half spacing shall be adopted for typing matter under this head. 6.7 List of Tables: The list shall use exactly the same captions as they appear above the tables in the text. One and half spacing shall be adopted for typing the matter under this head. 6.8 List of figures and photographs: The list should be used exactly the same captions as they appear below the figures and photographs in the text. One and half spacing shall be used. 6.9 List of symbols, abbreviations, Nomenclatures: One and half spacing shall be adopted. Standard symbols and abbreviations shall be used. 6.10Chapters: The chapters may be broadly divided in to 3 parts: (i) Introductory (ii) Developing the main theme of the thesis (iii) Results, conclusion and discussion. The second part shall include appropriately literature studies, case studies, site study, experiments, etc. All design drawings and model photographs shall be included in the 3rd part There can be further subdivisions of the above three broad parts, Each Part, and subdivision shall be given an appropriate titles or chapterised foot notes shall be used sparingly. They shall be typed in single space and shall appear directly underneath in the very same page which refers to the material they annotate. 6.11Appendices: Appendices are provided to give supplementary information which if included in the main text may serve as a distraction and cloned the central theme under discussion. Appendices should be numbered; Appendix No.1, 2, etc.

FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE MANIPAL UNIVERSITY THESIS MANUAL (2014- 2015) : B.Arch - IV YEAR 6.12 List of References: If any work of others, used directly or indirectly, the origin of the material, thus referred to at appropriate places in thesis shall be indicated. A paper, a monograph or a book may be designated by the name of the first author, followed by the year of publication placed inside the brackets at the appropriate place of reference. The citation may assume any one of the following forms: (i) An important method of creating forces in mentioned by Kevin Lynch (1972) (ii) As regard to the rise of Post Modernism in Europe (Jenks 1990) and its reflections in allied fields like literature (Sachindanandan 1995) The listing shall be typed four space below the heading "REFERNCES" in alphabetical order in single spacing, left-justified. Reference material shall be listed in the alphabetical order of name of first author. The name of author/authors must be immediately followed by year of publication. A typical illustrative list is given below: 1. Shivanand Swamy H. (1991), "Transportation network and Land Vale Changes" - Nagarlok - Journal of Transportation, Vol.42, No.5, pp 127-131. 2. Shin K.G. and Mckay ND (1984), "Open Loop Minimum Control of Mechanical Manipulations", Prentice Hall (India), New Delhi. 6.13Figures and Photographs: Figures and photographs shall have good resolution. Photographs, when stuck to the page shall be well protected by good quality butter sheets to avoid sticking to the previous page. Digital prints or colour photocopy shall be accommodated within the limits of margins prescribed. 7. TYPING INSTRUCTIONS This section includes additional information for final typing of thesis. Some information given under "Manuscript Preparation" shall be also be referred. Impressions on the typed, duplicated or printed copies shall be black in colour If computer printers are used, uniformity of the first in the same thesis shall be observed Sub-heading at the bottom of a page must have at least two full lines below it, or else it shall be carried to the next page. One and half space shall be used for typing text Single spacing shall be used for long tables, long quotations, foot notes and references Double spacing shall be used for typing bonafide certificate and acknowledgement

8. NUMBERING INSTRUCTIONS All page numbers shall be typed without punctuation on the upper right hand corner 20mm from top with the last digit in line with the right hand margin. The preliminary pages of the thesis, such as acknowledgement, table of contents etc. shall be numbered in lower case Roman numerals. The title page shall be numbered as (i) but this should not be typed Pages of the main text, starting with chapter 1 should be consecutively numbered using numerals 1,2,3......... 9. BINDING SPECIFICATIONS Thesis submitted (1 copy) should be bound using hard binding material. Spine for the bound volume should be of black calio of 20mm width. 10. PHOTOGRAPHS AND DRAWINGS All drawings of design shall be presented in the part that explain results. Photographs of the drawings of size 4x6 shall be pasted with appropriate titles. Drawings if made with the help of computer, shall be reduced to appropriate size and included as inkjet printout/plot out or digital print.
