CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION This chapter tackles the background of study, statement of the problem, hypothesis, significance of the study, and the definition of terms. Background of the study Alcoholic beverages are commonly known and taken nowadays; no matter where you go, you are likely to notice there is always alcohol around in a social setting that even people with minor age get access to. One important thing to notice about alcohol is that people get addicted to it. It’s known as alcoholism and people who suffer from it are called alcoholics. The truth is, alcoholism is a disease, and it can be very, very hard for alcoholics to stop drinking. So from there we started to question of why do people start drinking to begin with? We have come to choose this study not only of knowledge but also to come in awareness as to the reasons as to why people embark on the consumption of alcoholic beverages amidst the effect such as it causes the heart to have irregular heartbeats as well as high blood pressure, destroys brain cells and excessive drinking over a prolonged period of time can cause serious problems with cognition and memory.
1
From there, we try to allocate all of possible reasons as to why and justify if they were valid or more likely an excuses. Statement of the Problem The study aimed to determine the reason why people drink alcoholic beverages? Specifically, it sought to answer the following: 1. Is the reason valid for taking this alcoholic beverage? 2. Does a taking alcoholic beverage resolve the reason stated? Hypotheses The null hypotheses tested in this study are as follows: 1. Drinking helps people to deal with their problems. 2. Out of curiosity this usually starts during teenage years
that eventually lead drinking alcohol as normal activity. 3.
Socialization, since people tend to be “in”.
Significance of the Study Alcoholic beverages are very common nowadays. Yet some are expensive but a lot of people choose to patronize this. The researchers decided to conduct a study in order to provide further knowledge about the reasons why people choose to take alcohol. This study can be significant to the following: 1. It will determine the reasons behind alcohol addiction. 2. In order to formulate steps and actions to reduce alcohol consumption.

CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES This chapter presents a review of literature and studies both local and foreign which are relevant to the present study. Local Literature “It is at this age is when peer pressure, adventurism, and curiosity influence the behavior and decisions of a lot of young people. It doesn’t only involve alcohol but drugs as well. This is when substance abuse starts,” explains Dr. Thelma Navarrez, director of the Department of Education Nutrition and Health Center. (Source: Garcia, Angelo G., Manila Bulletin, Education Section by October 24, 2010)
Foreign Literature Alcoholic beverages, and their use or abuse, have an ancient history. Long before humans began to keep record of any kind, these beverages were valued as food, medicine, and ceremonial drinks. When people today have beer or wine with dinner, or toast newlyweds with champagne, or share wine at a religious ritual or festival, they are continuing traditions that have deep roots in the past. Some facts about current consumption of alcholic beverages:
4
•
Drinking is more common among men than among women, but the gap is closing.
•
It is more common among people who are under 40.
•
It is more commong among the well-to-do than among the poor.
•
Beyond the age of 45, the number of drinkers steadily declines. (Wagman 2006) Positive reasons for drinking alcoholic beverages include:
Celebrating significant occasions with friends or loved ones. Enhancing enjoyment of social activities and relaxation. Complementing certain meals. Participating in religious ceremonies. Enjoying the taste as a beverage of choice. Negative reasons for drinking alcoholic beverages include: Escaping from tension or worries. Blocking out painful feelings such as fear, loneliness, and self-doubt. Attempting to relate better to people. As a substitute for meaningful relationships with people. Finding courage or strength to face certain situations. What are symptoms of alcoholism? Only a qualified professional can determine if an individual is alcoholic. However, the following warning signals may indicate the presence of alcohol-related problems. Generally, these signals involve later stages of alcoholism and involve symptoms that may be unrelated to time periods and drinking patterns. (Source: http://www.experts123.com/q/why-do-people-drink-alcoholicbeverages-beer-distilled-spirits-or-wine.html) Foreign Studies A lot of research has been done to find and explore the reason why people drink alcohol. •
Sociability (71%) 5
•
Like the taste (51%)
•
Feel at ease (12%)
•
Get intoxicated (6%)
•
Get drunk (2%)
•
Because everybody does it (6%)
•
To forget problems (1%) Alcohol gets risky when you need more to feel good. If you can't
do that anymore on your own, and you use the alcohol for it, at a certain point you run the risk of starting to drink more and more each time to still feel the effects. This can be the beginning of an addiction. If you drink to feel good, you should ask yourself if you can also feel at ease
without
alcohol.

These gave us further insights and knowledge; also the same pattern and reasons are noted. It was recount with authentication that most people indulge to drinking alcohol
because
of
society,
the
influence
of
their
peers,
the
inquisitiveness, and to feel at ease, which tend to temporarily forget about current problems or dilemma.

CHAPTER 3 SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS This part of the study presents the three topical areas of this chapter, namely: summary, conclusions, and recommendations based on the finding of the study: Summary The study tried to find out the reason why people drink alcoholic beverage. To find out if these said reasons are valid and how drinking alcohol relate to the stated reasons. The research that was done through means of written works, literature and information spread across the web. To our collective insight it is narrated and shown that: 1.
Socialization play a big role as to why people tend to have alcohol. Many people drink as their way to fit in with others, it often boosts their confidence and helps reduce stresses they may usually have in a social setting. If sense of belonginess can be found by drinking what others do, can a fault be found? We perceive that it is valid and in a situation to take drink when you are able to take it moderately but if not be, liable to the consequences. 7
2. Next, was the taste, be it someone with a love for beer or the
many mixed drinks available, people do simply enjoy the taste of these
beverages.
Its
beyond
us
to
control
what
other
preferences, yet we must instill that such lead to destructive behaviors and health problems. As to how people drink to relax, or feel at ease. With this is that many people get used to feeling at ease and relaxed and start to rely on alcohol to make them feel that way on a daily basis. 3. Peer pressure came in view as to how common this occurs in
today’s youth society. It's only human nature to listen to and learn from other people in your age group. If you are tempted to drink because your friends expect you to, or you’re trying to show them you’re cool, it’s time to look a little closer at the situation. The idea that "everyone's doing it" can influence some kids to leave their better judgment, or their common sense, behind. What would happen if you told them you weren’t interested in drinking? Would they drop you as a friend or not want to hang out with you anymore? And if they did that, were they really true friends in the first place? A real friend will respect your decisions. 4. Many people drink too much in order to escape from their lives,
forget their troubles, or “drown their sorrows.” And since alcohol makes the brain and memory go fuzzy, some people actually forget what’s troubling them, at least for a night. We also comprehend that this reason got the lowest since not most people will admit that such reason come as to why they drink because they do perceive in our common mind that alcohol never, ever fixes what is wrong with somebody’s life, that when 8
the person wakes up, all the troubles are still there. In fact, it almost always makes things worse, because alcoholism is just one more problem to add to whatever else is going on.
9
Conclusions According on the findings, the following conclusions are drawn: 1. We conclude that people since then, used to drink alcoholic
beverages, whether they are problematic or not, they should drink moderately in order to maintain their cholesterol level and avoid having liver problems. In addition, if they can be able to drink moderately, road accidents and trouble can be avoided. People just need to have self-control whenever they want to take alcoholic beverages to avoid those dilemmas. 2. We believe reason as such taking alcoholic beverages because of personal and family problems is not valid because if they continue to drinking, it will lead that they become addict and they will just destroy their body and problems can be solve in different ways drinking is not a solution in any kinds of problems. Drinking is not getting any good attention to everyone surround us. 3. Taking alcoholic beverages does not resolve the reasons why
people drink because when spirit of alcohol disappear in your body the problems that you may want to forget will be greater. The stated reasons cannot resolve any problems because drinking alcohol is not good in our body, taking alcohol cannot solve any problems and drinking can kill your body and can bring you death.
10
Recommendations In the light of the findings and conclusion of the study, the following recommendations are given: 1. Since alcohol causes a variety of feelings such as happiness, relaxation, sleepiness and drunkenness. There are alternatives such exercise, get more sleep, eat properly, play a team sport, read a really good book, learn something new, talk to a friend. 2. Drinking alcohol is another way of trying to show people that you are mature or grownup. You can invent your own image, take a personality quiz, and by being yourself, not what some ad tells you who you should be. 3. People drink alcohol to change moods they want to escape. To do this, they will probably have to drink more than one drink. This reason for drinking is more likely to lead to problem drinking. Everyone has problems from time to time. Learn how to manage problems by talking to a friend, a parent, a counselor. 4. Moreover, if drinking alcoholic beverages is required in certain situations then learn to do it moderately.
