B ack g round of the the study Social media is any website that allows social interaction; it is growing rapidly throughout the world. More adult and teenagers are joining sites such as facebook, twitter and instragram to interact with friends, family and strangers. The introduction of social media has changed the world in many ways. It affects each individual in different ways. Today it can be used as a very helpful tool in changing a person`s life, but at the same time cause such conflicts which can negatively effects the academic performance of the students. Social media is very significant nowadays in communicative process because we are able to communicate globally in all circumstances, we develop our capability of expressing ourselves toward others and it is the path to teach abroad, complying requirements, applying a job and knowing what is happen globally. Nevertheless, all of this usefulness of social media will cause disadvantages which can destroy the life of a person particularly in the life of the students in their academic performances. Social media may cause distraction of the students during their class hours, their interest in the learning will distract by this social media. Students may spent more time in dealing facebook, instagram, twitter and other website that involved socialization even in the pass hours. Students can miss their studies and spent a lot of time in social media. They can`t make their assignments and requirements, cannot study well and cannot actively participate in class discussion that may affect their academic performance. Students must have time management in when, where and how they used social media. They must have the schedule to focus one thing in a certain time before doing anything else. Although social media can help the students in different ways but they have their limitations. Students must have more time in studying than using social media. In this research, the researcher will try to find out the relationship between social media and academic performance. If this is cost positively or negatively otherwise both of them can be used in the same hour and place.

This study aimed to determine the effects of social media to the academic performance of the students of Marian College. Specifically, this study answers the following problems: 1. What are the profiles of students of Marian College? 2. What is the mean number of hours per week that spent by the students on social media. 3. What is the average midterm grade of the students during the first semester of the school year 2017-2018? 4. Is there significant relationship between the number of hours spend on social media and the average midterm grades of the students?
