Parish Book of Psalms

Introduction

T

his collection of plainchant Responsorial Psalm settings in English is intended for Ordinary Form Masses. The texts of these psalms correspond with those found in the Lectionary for Mass for the dioceses of the United States of America and provide an accessible, tradition-based option for singing the Responsorial Psalms at Mass on Sundays and selected solemnities and feasts. Each of these settings can be led by an unaccompanied schola or single cantor; members of the congregation should be able to repeat their parts after one or two hearings. All of the verses are fully pointed and notated to facilitate ease in performance by the cantor or schola. Plainchant is text driven. Though modal in form, neither the melodies nor the mode choices for these settings are based on those of their corresponding Graduals, which are sometimes considered the predecessors of the Responsorial Psalm. The melodies of these antiphons are original and were inspired by the abrupt but ultimately delightful sonority and rhythms of the English language. The verses are set to the Gregorian Office tone formulas that not only correspond in terms of mode but also best complement the English idiom. With a few exceptions, I have opted to treat each cycle of verses with only one mediant and final cadence. This allows the congregation to hear the final cadence only one time per cycle and sends a clear signal when it is time to repeat the antiphon. Finally, spending a good deal of time on the reciting tone translates into fewer interruptions in the flow of the text and, by way of contrast, renewed attention to the antiphon melody. My hope is that this collection fosters prayer in the minds and hearts and on the lips of individuals and communities who sing from it— Introduction

and that its foundation in Gregorian structures gives rise to a greater appreciation of our musical heritage as Catholics in both cognitive and auditory ways. Many thanks are due my friends and colleagues in the Church Music Association of America and beyond who have provided me with a great deal of encouragement: David Hughes, Paul Weber, Aristotle Esguerra, Jeffrey Ostrowski, Adam Bartlett, Richard Rice, Ryan Murphy, Wilko Brouwers, William Mahrt, Scott Turkington, Mary Jane Ballou, and many more. I am also indebted to the Reverend Monsignor William J. Skoneki, the St. Cecilia Schola, and parishioners of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Auburn, Alabama, for helping me to see, week after week, what works and what does not. Special thanks are also due Jeffrey Tucker, Richard Chonak, Ben Yanke, and Mary Weaver as well as the many donors who have made this book a reality. As always, I am grateful to my family, and I remain in humble service to our Lord, to whom all prayers are lifted and for whom all songs are sung. Arlene Oost-Zinner

Each psalm was engraved using open-source software and fonts under a Linux operating system. The chant-engraving program Gregorio, originally invented by Élie Roux, is a software add-on for the document-processing program LaTeX. Information on the Gregorio project is available on the internet at home.gna.org/gregorio.
