THE LIST OF GREATS Here is the list of NoFap legends (Great men that benefited from seminal conservation). Please help me add. No hearsay please, your additions must have quotes from believable sources. All on the list fall into one of the three categories: 1. Refrained from all sexual release (masturbation and sex) believing it provided mental/physical benefits 2. Refrained from masturbation believing it provided mental/physical benefits 3. Refrained from sex believing it provided mental/physical benefits

Whether one refrained from sex or masturbation (for life or for a short period of time, as in the case of athletes) they must have done so due to their awareness of its NoFap benefits. unsubscribe (Note: Some of these men refrained from masturbating, some men had children, and some of these men were completely celibate or became celibate at some point in their lives. Even in my sleep -- if there are girls all over me in my dream, I say to them, "I’ve got a fight next week, I can’t do anything. I can’t do it.” That’s control. An incredible amount of wonderful threads, that sometimes required hours of inspired work to their respective authors, goes wasted in the oblivion in this sub. There should be the option to vote a thread to become permanent in the sidebar, or something like that. It is an incredible waste of inspiring material, that could be extremely useful expecially for the starters. I've seen a lot of threads that have been called "most inspirational material" etc., and i cringed while i was saving them in my account, knowing that the major part of the peoples here will never even have a chance to see that precious material. What a waste. permalink parent report give gold reply [–] nofaphmg

Seriously? Some of this quotes sounds like a snake oil. I know the person who says these thing can be considered "great", but it doesn't mean that what they say are always correct (reverse ad hominem). If u put this link on our sidebar, people will start to laugh at this community. No matter what kind of arguments you have, there will always be some people laughing at you, if tell them, that masturbating is not good for you. As Paulo Coelho once said: "Don't waste your time with explanations, people only hear what they want to hear". I say, if this post can inspire and help people to not fap, then let'em see it. Different approaches for different people. The sidebar could have this as well as some scientific posts. There's no need to make it about what kind of argument is the best one, when they all could compliment eachother. I found this post VERY inspiring. It didn't give me any scientific arguments - what it did give me, was HOPE. Hope that this struggle I have had for some time now is actually worth it. permalink parent report give gold reply [–] nofaphmg

I want to point out that this is a community where the contributors have the common goal of stopping watching porn and masturbating in order to improve one's life in some way. I do not see how you can think that providing some inspiration in the form of anecdotes from high-accomplishing individuals who attribute part of their success to abstinence from porn and masturbation could be detrimental to the ethos of this sub. Excuse me saying this but that is rather illogical. As for the sidebar issue. They said they would like the option for members of this community to vote on posts they would like to see on the sidebar. So those who disagree on a particular post can cast their vote against such posts. permalink parent report give gold reply [–] nofaphmg

Thank you for doing this! I always wished someone created the list of all people. You can probably add Friedrich Nietzsche - he is considered a founder of the theory of sexual sublimation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sublimation_(psychology) Also Napoleon Hill who wrote think and grow rich talks about this too and says that all great people conserved sexual energy such as Edison or Carnegie - I don't remember if he explicitly states so in the book. Steve Jobs was also opposed to porn http://gawker.com/5539717/steve-jobs-offers-world-freedom-from-porn permalink report give gold reply [–] autowikibot 7 points 20 hours ago
A bit from linked Wikipedia article about Sublimation (psychology) : In psychology, sublimation is a mature type of defense mechanism where socially unacceptable impulses or idealizations are consciously transformed into socially acceptable actions or behavior, possibly resulting in a long-term conversion of the initial impulse. Sigmund Freud believed that sublimation was a sign of maturity (indeed, of civilization), allowing people to function normally in culturally acceptable ways. He defined sublimation as the process of deflecting sexual instincts into acts of higher social valuation, being "an especially conspicuous feature of cultural development; it is what makes it possible for higher psychical activities, scientific, artistic or ideological, to play such an important part in civilised life". Wade and Tavris present a similar view, stating that sublimation is when displacement "serves a higher cultural or socially useful purpose, as in the creation of art or inventions". about | /u/k9security can reply with 'delete' if required. I used to love reading Nietzsche. Definitely would not want to be him though. I may not write Zarathustra but he seemed like a genuinely miserable person, at least usually. Who knows maybe he was just being brutally honest about his thoughts in a way some of us would rather not face, but it seemed that practically speaking from a daily mental/emotional/physical standpoint, he lived a painful existence inside his head. His body was weak and he didn't seem to really enjoy life. Maybe that's conjecture, but it makes me think that you can't necessarily philosophize yourself into happiness, thinking deeply while crouched over a book, you need to also take action with your body in the world. excuse the rambling, just wanted to say that. permalink parent report give gold reply [–] Tom_Brett

Well some other philosopher said the more you know the less happy you are. Maybe it's a choice he made, happiness is not the goal of life (personal opinion) despite that media and brands sell it as such, for some people making a difference is. But you have a point, I wouldn't want to be so miserable either. permalink parent report give gold reply [–] ultraninja2012

Wow. Truly inspiring. I had a hunch about this a few years ago. But this is solid reassurance. Another instance: While watching the movie Invictus, with Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman, I remember Matt Damon's character telling his wife that he wanted to be "aggressive tomorrow", when she wanted to have sex with him on the night before the big game. Why? There is something here. Btw, Invictus is based on the real story of about Nelson Mandela(played by Freeman) and Francois Piennar, the South-African rugby captain at the time (played by Damon), and his interactions with Mandela when Mandela became the president, and the nation needed a symbol of unity. The rugby team was that inspiration, so the captain had the burden to inspire his team and eventually the country. FYI, I aint South African. The movie was great. permalink report give gold reply [–] one_ornery_taco 5 points 13 hours ago

This is an awesome list, thanks OP for this. Just reading all of these makes you feel even better about abstaining. It helps you realize that the purpose of your life isn't to be successful to get women;no, it's to strive for greatness, to improve your fellow man's lives and your own life. Sex should be something that is enjoyed on the side, not something that should run your life or greatly influence your goals. All of these "greats" are living proof that abstaining from sex can be very very very beneficial. It's just getting that discipline down that is the hard part lol :/ permalink report give gold reply [–] uyScuti

Great post! Truly motivating! I especially like the boxers' stories. They wished for greatness and abstained for lengths of time before they're big opportunity. Devoting all energy to making their success a reality. This is why I abstain, I'm barely 16 years old but god dammit I want to be great in the things in life that are so important to me. I want it so bad and there's no way I would want PMO to get in the way of it. permalink report give gold reply [–] Zwuckel87

Davis was alright; especially his take on clueless white people, which I'm guessing to him was just... white people. Guy broke both his legs crashing his Lamborghini. If you're gonna go big, don't fake it. Funniest thing I ever heard him say, something to the effect of: White people always asking me why I'm so good at playing the blues. "Is it because you're black and your people have had to struggle through so much hardship?"

He's not promoting celibacy. Sure, some of those quotes were from celibate people. The point is that sex is all that a lot of men seem to think about these days. It's their ultimate goal: get laid. And if they can't get that then they jerk it. But here we have a list of great men (mostly...I wouldn't include Kanye) that believed that sex/masturbation could harm their abilities to achieve greatness. They realized there was more to live for, more to reach for. And considering who these men were/are and what they've done with their lives...I'd say there's something to it. My own contribution (I have no source) : I hear once that Samurai were forbidden to masturbate because of the negative effects it had on their abilities. permalink parent report give gold reply [–] BifidusRegularis
9 days 7 points 14 hours ago
I'm sorry but, why would you, how could you not include Kanye West? I know this isn't exactly the place to discuss it but, there is absolutely no question that Kanye is one of the most successful and accomplished people on that list that is still alive today. Kanye went from a producer that nobody saw having a solo career, and became a hip hop phenomenon. He has one 21 Grammy awards, more than any other rapper or hip-hop artists. 6 of his 7 albums have spent multiple weeks as number 1 on the Billboard 200 charts. His ability to experiment with sound has started several trends in hip hop music. He's influenced several popular hip hop artists of today like Drake and KiD CuDi for example. You probably like a lot more Kanye songs than you thought you did because he's produced countless hits for artists such as Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Beyoncé, Common, Lupe Fiasco, John Legend, Nas, and more. So let me ask you again, how on Earth do you consider Kanye a great man? Because he has an ego? Because he's an "asshole"? You think Steve Jobs was a saint? You think Miles Davis wasn't an asshole at times? Most of these men are probably a lot like Kanye, Kanye is just vocal about it. I apologize for this off topic rant but, take inspiration from a man's accomplishments, not his attitude. permalink parent report give gold reply [–] brychew88 1 point 13 hours ago
You're right. Every one has their issues. He's just...such a douche haha. Some of the shit I've heard him say... His recent comment about his being a musician is comparable to being a soldier destroyed any question that he is not a http://www.reddit.com/r/NoFap/comments/1uth8n/the_list_of_greats/

Hi. Yea Da Vinci is someone I tried to look into. There is evidence from legal files during his time that he was arrested and tried for sodomy. It is widely believed that he was a homosexual, and may have had some affairs. But because of being a homosexual at the height of the Roman Catholic Church, he might have refrained from sex altogether at one point. I understand your position. There are many on the list that we all have a problem with in terms of their personalities or certain things they might have done. Kanye is an obnoxious personality. Tyson was convicted of rape. Issac Newton believed in witch-craft. Tesla believed in aliens, would ruin the reputation of other inventors and at one point started to get delusional. Gandhi tested his celibacy by sleeping with naked women. The samurai Takamori beheaded thousands of people. Nonetheless, these men all accomplished a lot in their lives. Tyson is a legendary boxer and in that endeavor maybe seminal conservation helped him? permalink parent report give gold reply [–] no_faps

While their professional accomplishments can all be held in high regard, I'm not a fan of most of the people you listed. If it came out that Hitler was the greatest nofapper of all time, I'd not suddenly have a respect for his accomplishments. It's an extreme example, but the principal is there. permalink parent report give gold reply [–] nofaphmg
2 days [S] 1 point 7 hours ago
Ha! The Hitler example is very relevant here. Hitler's sexuality has been the topic of many books and documentaries. While some consider him asexual (did not have sex with his lover Eva), some others consider that he may have been homosexual. While some have written about his deviant sexual preferences like water-play and incest (his cousin committed suicide and blamed Hitler's incest/activities). In any case, during the war ('39-'45), I believe he did in fact abstain from sexual activity. And no I do not consider him a great nofapper! However, I don't understand how you are not a fan of "most" of the people I have listed? I recognize that you may not like Tyson or Kanye West. But how can you not like Issac Newton, Gandhi, Freud, Steve Jobs, Tolstoy, Michelangelo, Pythagoras, Tesla, the Dalai Lama? It seems as though you know a lot more about them personally than we all do? Or perhaps you have very high standards? permalink parent report give gold reply [–] no_faps

Different strokes for different folks, no pun intended. I don't believe there's anything wrong with sexual release in moderation, after a proper reboot. Porn is the enemy for me. Quick note - Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, and Napoleon were all sexually voracious and conquered most of the known world in their time. What did they have in common? None of them watched porn. People forget there can just be as many benefits to sex as there are to celibacy, just like there are almost as many benefits to hot showers as cold ones. permalink report give gold reply
