THE INNER SOUND TECHNIQUE The Inner Sound Technique is very simple to practice... Block off your ear canals with your thumbs, either by inserting them directly into your ears, or by pressing them against the flaps of skin that partially cover the front of the ear holes (The Tragus). Now concentrate on the sounds that you hear inside your head. If you listen closely, you will be able to hear two distinct sounds..... One is a low rumbling bass vibration, and the other,a higher pitched buzzing or humming sound. Once you can hear the basic inner sounds, there are two distinct "modes" of experience you can choose to practice. In the PASSIVE MODE, the intention is simply to listen to the sounds, and let the mind drift until one's thoughts naturally slow, and then finally cease (for a time), as your consciousness merges with the sounds. This "emptying of the mind", of course, is the supreme goal of Eastern Raj Yoga, and the purported effects include Enlightenment and God Realization, amongst other sundry enhanced mind powers. In the ACTIVE MODE, on the other hand, the intention is to focus more and more intently on a small portion of the overall sensory experience. In practise, this means choosing (for example) the higher tone, concentrating on it, and listening intently for any variations in pitch, rhythm or intensity. Try starting with attempting to discern a even higher tone, and let this lead you to a further "new" sound, and so on. With regular (daily) practice you will find that the initial two basic tones can expand into an esoteric form of internal music, with distinct "instruments", rhythms, chords and melodies, an experience perhaps known to the ancient Greeks as "the music of the spheres". This acquired skill is similar to the way a musician is able to to analyze and extract the diverse elements that make up the sound of a piece of music, while an untrained ear experiences the overall effect. The Inner sound Technique, like the Inner Light Technique, is a free, always available, means of countering the energy draining demands of modern life. The ancient Taoist Masters were reputed to enjoy a healthy, vigorous and extended existence, in an era when conditions were harsh, and life was commonly brutish and short.

One of their basic tenets is that a human being is born with a certain finite amount of "innate" or "primal" energy, or life force. This internal energy can be gradually dissipated by the physical and emotional interreactions we have with the external World that we experience. As our internal energy levels decrease over the course of a lifetime, we can become more and more vulnerable to the physical and mental frailties programmed into our genetic code. Fortunately, by simply listening to, and absorbing the energy inherent in the inner sounds on a regular (daily) basis, we can gradually recharge with vitality, internal life force, chi, prana, (call it what you will), from a source within. This source of energy, I call it the Inner Sun, is our connection to the primal creative energy that gives life to all things. The more internal energy you have, the more exalted and uplifted your life will become, not to mention healthy, happy and wise. This is the message passed down through the centuries from the ancient masters, for all who can hear. Best Wishes to you, more tips and techniques on request.... Keith Burrows [email protected]
