THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

ACT 1 1, OLIM

(Chorus)

SCENE 1: The Cathedral of NOTRE DAME CHORUS: (the CONGREGATION walk on stage fully robed. CLOPIN, robed as well, walks through the center with a thurible.) OLIM OLIM DEUS ACCELERE HOC SAECULUM SPLENDIDUM ACCELERE FIAT VENIRE OLIM

2. BELLS OF NOTRE DAME

(Company and Chorus)

(The stage is filled with the light of Notre Dame and the CONGREGATION face the audience and carry out the opening chords) CLOPIN (robed): MORNING IN PARIS THE CITY AWAKES TO THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME CONGREGATION: THE FISHERMAN FISHES THE BAKER-MAN BAKES TO THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME PHOEBUS (robed): TO THE BIG BELLS AS LOUD AS THE THUNDER CONGREGATION: TO THE LITTLE BELLS SOFT AS A PSALM ESMERELDA (robed): AND SOME SAY THE SOUL OF THE CITY’S THE TOLL OF CONGREGATION: THE BELLS THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME

5

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME CONGREGATION: On the Morning of January 6th, 1482, the good citizens of Paris gathered at the cathedral to listen to the sermon… (DOM CLAUDE FROLLO enters, robed. He stands centerstage, addressing the CONGREGATES of Notre Dame). FROLLO: …of Dom Claude Frollo… CONGREGATION: …archdeacon of Notre Dame, before whom the congregation trembled as he stopped beneath the lofty arches of the church. FROLLO: Congregants, we gather here, in this vast symphony of stone, on the morning of the Feast of Fools. Our streets will soon be filled with those unsavory elements: criminals, foreigners, and gypsies, who have infested our city, and are on this one day free to roam without being subject to arrest. Beware the temptations of those less devout than we. We must fight the urge to indulge ourselves. For remember, we are all born sinners. CONGREGATION LONG YEARS AGO DID THIS STORY BEGIN IN THIS PLACE CALLED NOTRE DAME TWO ORPHAN BROTHERS WERE BOTH TAKEN IN BY THE GRACE OF NOTRE DAME FROLLO (de-robes): CLAUDE, THE OLDER WHO CARED FOR HIS BROTHER JEHAN (from the CONGREGATES, also de-robes): YOUNG JEHAN, FULL OF BEAUTY AND CHARM BOTH: AND THEY LIVED AND THEY GREW AND AWOKE TO THE MUSIC OF BELLS ALL: THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME CHORUS: KYRIE ELEISON FROLLO OH DEAR BROTHER MEET THESE ARCHES AND THIS SACRED DOME CHORUS KYRIE ELEISON

6

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME FROLLO WE ARE BLESSED TO FIND OUR SANCTUARY AND OUR HOME JEHAN: (lovingly picks up his brother and hugs him) Come with me dear brother! I’m heading into town for a little fun. FROLLO: No, Jehan, you must stay home and write out your catechism. JEHAN: No, you must come with me to the bar! FROLLO: Jehan! I am not going to lie for you again if you stay up late. JEHAN: Yes you will. Brother dear! (He kisses FROLLO’s cheek) You are so good to me. (JEHAN exits). CONGREGATION RIGHTEOUS CLAUDE FROLLO WAS EVER MORE DRAWN LIKE A SON TO NOTRE DAME JEHAN (entering): NOT LIKE HIS PROFLIGATE BROTHER JEHAN WHO’D HAVE NONE OF NOTRE DAME CONGREGATION THOUGH AS BROTHERS THEY LOVED ONE ANOTHER FROLLO WATCHED IN DESPAIR AND ALARM AS JEHAN WHO GREW WILD AND DEFIED AND DEFILED ALL THE LAWS THE LAWS OF NOTRE DAME (Jehan now has a bottle of liquor and has arrived back at the cathedral, late at night). FROLLO: Jehan, Where have you been? Why weren’t you in evening mass? JEHAN: It’s your birthday today! We must celebrate! I brought you a gift — she’s a friend of mine. (He reveals FLORIKA). FROLLO: A gypsy girl in our room? JEHAN: Florika – she is a beauty, isn’t she? This is my brother, Claude. FLORIKA: Happy birthday…Claude. Don’t be shy. I can see you want to. I can see it in your eyes. Ha-ha! I can feel it, too!

7

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME FROLLO: Stop! FATHER DUPIN: Claude? JEHAN: It’s Father Dupin! Help me hide her! (Within the CONGREGATION acting as a stone wall, they hide her. FATHER DUPIN hides her) FATHER DUPIN: What is going on in here? JEHAN: Nothing, Father! FATHER DUPIN: Is it nothing, Claude? FROLLO: Tell him, Jehan. If you won’t, I will! (Pulls FLORIKA out of the hiding place and throws her to the floor). CHORUS: KYRIE ELEISON FATHER DUPIN: YOU MUST LEAVE, JEHAN, THIS HOLY REFUGE WHERE YOU’VE DWELLED. JEHAN: Leave? But Father— FATHER DUPIN: SORRY CLAUDE, BUT I’VE NO CHOICE YOUR BROTHER IS EXPELLED FROLLO: Jehan… JEHAN: What did you think? That they wouldn’t send me away? Who do you think these people are? FROLLO: These people have given us a home and comfort and safety! JEHAN: Comfort?! You call this comfort? You call this safety? Well, you can have it! You’re welcome to it. JEHAN AND FLORIKA: And Jehan and the girl left. (They exit) CONGREGATION: And Frollo didn’t hear from his brother for several years. Meanwhile… FROLLO ASCENDED UNCOMMONLY FAST THROUGH THE RANKS THE RANKS OF NOTRE DAME TILL HE WAS NAMED THE ARCHDEACON AT LAST

8

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME AND GAVE THANKS TO NOTRE DAME AND THEN ONE AWFUL DAY GOT A MESSAGE FROLLO: AND THE NAME THAT IT BORE WAS “JEHAN” CONGREGATION: AND CONCEALING HIS FACE FROLLO STOLE TO A PLACE FAR AWAY…AWAY FROM NOTRE DAME FROLLO: I’m Father Claude Frollo. I was told to come to this place. WOMAN: Oh, we’ve heard about you. JEHAN: (laying in a bed and dying) Hello, brother dear. FROLLO: Jehan! Oh, thank God! Where have you been? JEHAN: I’ve been traveling…hounded from city to city with my beautiful Florika. FROLLO: The gypsy girl—you’re with her? JEHAN: She died three months ago—from the pox. It was a terrible thing to watch her suffer. FROLLO: Jehan, let me take you back. I’ll bring you home. (He holds him in his arms). FROLLO: BROTHER DEAREST, COME WITH ME WHERE WE WILL FIND A REMEDY AND NOTRE DAME ONCE MORE WILL BE YOUR SANCTUARY HEALING YOU WILL BE MY GOAL NOT JUST YOUR BODY, BUT YOUR SOUL WE’LL BE TOGETHER IN OUR HOLY SANCTUARY JEHAN: Enough, Claude! Enough of your pieties! It’s too late for me anyway. But if you have truly discovered charity at this late date, there is someone you can help. (A member of the CONGREGATION hands FROLLO a baby wrapped in a blanket). FROLLO: A baby? Yours? A…a monster! It’s God’s judgement on you! The wicked shall not go unpunished! JEHAN: I should have known! I was a fool to think you’d look after him!

9

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME FROLLO: Look after him? Me? JEHAN: He has no one else! FROLLO: But he’s a gypsy child! JEHAN:…And mine. Take him…if you can find it in your heart. (Dies). FROLLO: Jehan? Jehan?! (He rushes into the night with the baby). CHORUS: DIES IRAE DIES ILLA SOLVET SAECLUM IN FAVILLA (FROLLO runs to the front of the stage and raises the baby, ready to throw it into the abyss). CHORUS: KYRIE ELEISON CONGREGATION: AND THE SAINTS REGARDED FROLLO FROM THEIR STONE FACADE CHORUS: KYRIE ELEISON AND HE FELT THEIR GAZE AS IF IT WERE THE EYES OF GOD FROLLO: Oh Lord, you’ve sent me a test. This child is my cross to bear. I may not have saved my brother, but I will save this…thing. But a monster like this must be kept hidden. FROLLO: SEE THIS LONESOME CREATURE FROM WHOM LESSER MEN WOULD FLEE I WILL KEEP AND CARE FOR HIM AND TEACH HIM AT MY KNEE TO THINK LIKE ME CONGREGATION: And Frollo gave the child a name. A cruel name that means half-formed… FROLLO: Quasimodo!

10

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME CLOPIN: NOW HERE IS A RIDDLE TO GUESS IF YOU CAN SING THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME (QUASIMODO enters in common attire) QUASIMODO: WHAT MAKES A MONSTER AND WHAT MAKES A MAN? (During this, he smears paint on his face to give the illusion of a deformity and the actor transforms into the hunchback. His tunic is placed on him as well.) ALL: SING THE BELLS, BELLS, BELLS, BELLS, BELLS, BELLS, BELLS, BELLS, THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME FROLLO: Up! (He points to the bells). (The bells ring. QUASIMODO swings from the bells, and speaks over their chiming.) QUASIMODO: Oh Marie! You’re in very good voice today! Jacqueline, we need to fix your clapper! C’mon, Gabriel! Pour your flood of sound into the square! Oh, it’s a holiday! Sing, my bells! Sing till you are all quite out of breath! (Distant sound of birds chirping. QUASIMODO goes to them.) QUASIMODO: Ah, morning, my little birdies! (The GARGOYLES are members of the CONGREGATION, but have small chimes and bells that they ring when they speak). GARGOYLE: Don’t you wish you could be like those birds and just fly away? QUASIMODO: Ooh, me? No. No! GARGOYLE: But how beautiful it must be out there! QUASIMODO: Ah, no. No. Not for me. GARGOYLES: Why not? QUASIMODO: It’s too dangerous!

11

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME GARGOYLE: The boy is right. Don’t encourage him! GARGOYLES: Why shouldn’t we? CONGREGATION: For Quasimodo, the cathedral was not only his home, but his universe. It was people with figures of marble; with kings and saints, monsters and demons. The saints blessed him, and the monsters protected him! QUASIMODO: Today…is the Feast of Fools! GARGOYLES: YEAH! YAY! GARGOYLE: Quasimodo, why don’t you try going down there? QUASIMODO: You know I’ve never gone outside. GARGOYLE: You can leave any time you want! GARGOYLE: Master won’t allow it! QUASIMODO: No, last year, he said “Someday, maybe.”. GARGOYLE: He always says “Someday.” Never today! GARGOYLE: Besides, you shouldn’t have to ask for permission to go outside! Just put one foot in front of the other! GARGOYLES: And sneak out! QUASIMODO: I can’t! (FROLLO enters carrying a basket with two cups and bread). FROLLO: Quasimodo? (He taps him on the shoulder). Good morning, Quasimodo. QUASIMODO: (At the sight of his master, he scrunches up, and looks up toward FROLLO). Morning, master. FROLLO: Were you talking to someone? QUASIMODO: No! Just…my friends. FROLLO: Mhm, your friends. And what are your friends made of? QUASIMODO: Stone.

12

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME FROLLO: And can stone talk back? QUASIMODO: No! (slaps his hand.) FROLLO: That’s right. What kind of conversation is that? It takes two people to communicate, my boy. And who is that other person for you? QUASIMODO: You. You, Master. FROLLO: Right, again. (Frollo presents bread and wine to QUASIMODO) Corpus christi (the body of Christ). QUASIMODO: Amen. FROLLO: Sanctus christi (the blood of Christ). QUASIMODO: Amen. FROLLO: In nominee patri, fill et spiritu sancta (In the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit). I brought you a special treat today. Strawberry? (QUASIMODO goes to grab one from him.) FROLLO: Ah! Ah! (Smacks him away) Self-control, Quasimodo. It’s important to master the art. (QUASIMODO tentatively takes the strawberry and puts it in his mouth.) FROLLO: And of manners, too! QUASIMODO: (spits it out) Thank you, master. (FROLLO gestures to him that it is okay to eat it. QUASIMODO immediately devours it). FROLLO: Now shall we tell today’s story? QUASIMODO: Yes! Yes! FROLLO: Stories from our home’s beautiful statues! And we were up to…? QUASIMODO: Flight into Egypt! FROLLO: That’s right. What do you remember about that story? QUASIMODO:…Joseph fled into Egypt. FROLLO: (laughs) Yes, he did. With his wife, Mary, and…?

13

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME QUASIMODO: Baby Jesus! FROLLO: That’s right now, who hid them? Who protected them? QUASIMODO: Saint Aphro- (he keeps trying to pronounce the name.) FROLLO: (laughs, but speaks clearly) Aphrodisius. Saint Aphrodisius. As I have hidden and protected you. (Nearby horns are heard) FROLLO: Oh, ugh. Well I suppose I must stop stalling. (Goes to look down upon the square in disgust) Look at them down there, like horrible vermin! Scuttling about. And all to see the gypsies sing and dance. QUASIMODO: Gypsies? You told me gypsies not allowed to sing, dance. FROLLO: They aren’t except on this one day: The Feast of Fools. QUASIMODO: Feast of Fools. FROLLO: It’ll be the last time if I have anything to say about it. QUASIMODO: Last time? FROLLO: I petitioned the king to stop next year’s festival. QUASIMODO: But then, I can never go.

3. SANCTUARY

(Frollo)

FROLLO: Why our king allows the gypsies here in the first place is beyond me. THROUGH BORDERS POROUS AS A SIEVE WE LET THEM COME AND LET THEM LIVE IT’S ALMOST AS IF THEY WERE GIVEN SANCTUARY HOW IT FILLS ME WITH DISGUST TO WALK AMONGST THEM YET I MUST I LOATH TO LEAVE YOU AND OUR TRUSTY SANCTUARY QUASIMODO: What if I came with you? I’m strong, I could protect you.

14

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME FROLLO: You protect me? QUASIMODO: Like Saint Aphro- (tries to pronounce it again) FROLLO: (laughs at Quasimodo) Aphrodisius.

3A. SANCTUARY II

(Frollo and Quasimodo)

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME FROLLO: OUT THERE THEY’LL REVILE YOU AS A MONSTER QUASIMODO: I AM MONSTER FROLLO: OUT THERE THEY WILL HATE AND SCORN AND JEER QUASIMODO: ONLY A MONSTER FROLLO: WHY INVITE THEIR CURSES AND THEIR CONSTERNATION? STAY IN HERE BE FAITHFUL TO ME QUASIMODO: I’M FAITHFUL FROLLO: BE GRATEFUL TO ME QUASIMODO: I’M GRATEFUL FROLLO: DO AS I SAY OBEY BOTH: AND STAY IN HERE FROLLO: Remember Quasimodo, this is your sanctuary. (He leaves the stage, giving ESMERELDA a look) ALL: IT’S THE DAY WE DO THE THINGS THAT WE DEPLORE ON THE OTHER THREE HUNDRED AND SIXTY-FOUR ONCE A YEAR WE LOVE TO DROP IN WHERE THE BEER IS NEVER STOPPIN’ FOR THE CHANCE TO POP SOME POPINJAY AND PICK A KING WHO’LL PUT THE TOP IN TOPSY TURVY DAY, TOPSY TURVY MAD AND CRAZY UPSY-DAISY TOPSY TURVY DAY, HEY! TOWNSPERSON: (carrying a tomato) You think he’s ugly now? Well, watch this! (He throws it at QUASIMODO’s face and laughs). Now, that’s ugly! TOWNSPERSON: Hail to the King! (mock bows) TOWNSPERSON: Long live the King! (throws food) TOWNSPERSON: Bon appetite (throws food) CONGREGATION: The crowd had never done this before. Not in all the years of the Feast of Fools, but they had never seen a creature so horrible! And it drove them wild! (The crowd springs onto QUASIMODO, while FROLLO watches in disgust. They strip him of his cape and hit him over the head. Then, they dunk his face into a bucket of water). TOWNSPERSON: Tie him down!

28

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (They grab ropes and attempt to tie QUASIMODO down. He hurls one of them off of the stage. At last, they have him pinned down and begin to whip him.) QUASIMODO: (seeing FROLLO) Master, help me! PHOEBUS: Permission to stop this cruelty, your grace. FROLLO: Not just yet, Captain, a lesson needs to be learned here. ESMERELDA: (seeing the cruelty) Stop, please! No! CLOPIN: (trying to stop her) What are you doing? Are you crazy?! I’m warning you, Esmerelda! ESMERELDA: (breaking away from CLOPIN to the front of the stage) No! STOP! (The townspeople break away from QUASIMODO and let go of their ropes. QUASIMODO starts to cry). ESMERELDA: I’m so sorry. (She rushes to him, and he turns away thinking she will hurt him). ESMERELDA: No, please, don’t be afraid. QUASIMODO: Wat— water. (She gives him water). QUASIMODO: …Thank you. (ESMERELDA takes a handkerchief out and wipes QUASIMODO’s face, who whimpers). ESMERELDA: Shhh. (She takes out a knife, and cuts him free from the ropes). Go! Please! (Quasimodo rushes to the side) TOWNSPERSON: What are you doing?! You’re ruining all our fun! TOWNSPEOPLE: Yeah!/You Gypsy whore!/Gypsy whore! CLOPIN: (rushes to ESMERELDA) I warned you, didn’t I?! (With a flash and puff of smoke, the two disappear). FROLLO: Witchcraft!

29

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME TOWNSPERSON: (sees QUASIMODO) There he is! Get him! FROLLO: Stop this at once! We must show kindness to this…creature! As our savior did when he healed the Lepers. Time to go home. The performance is over! PHOEBUS: (shouting at the people) He said to go!

8B. SANCUTARY IV

(Frollo and Quasimodo)

(The crowd disperses. They hiss and spit at QUASIMODO, who goes to his master. FROLLO backs away). FROLLO: SEE HOW ITS CRUEL? SEE HOW ITS WICKED? SEE HOW I’VE SHELTERED YOU FROM HAVING TO GO THROUGH THIS? HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME? QUASIMODO: Forgive, master. Won’t ever leave again… FROLLO: NOW BOY, YOU SEE YOU DON’T BELONG WITH NORMAL MEN YOU ARE HAPPY WHEN YOU’RE IN YOUR SANCTUARY QUASIMODO: SANCTUARY… FROLLO: YOUR SANCTUARY BOTH: NEVER TO COME OUT HERE… QUASIMODO: HERE… FROLLO: AGAIN. FROLLO: (to PHOEBUS) Take the boy inside.

30

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (PHOEBUS goes to grab QUASIMODO’s arm, who pushes him away and enters the cathedral. FROLLO sees ESMERELDA’s scarf laying on the ground. He picks it up and exits the stage. Who is this girl? he thinks).

9A. BELLS OF NOTRE DAME II

(Congregation and Esmerelda)

CONGREGATION: SO THE POOR HUNCHBACK RETREATED BACK IN THROUGH THE DOORS OF NOTRE DAME AND THERE FOLLOWED THE GYPSY GIRL WHO’D NEVER BEEN THROUGH THE DOORS OF NOTRE DAME AND SHE STOPPED AND BEHELD ALL THE BEAUTY LIKE A BEGGAR RECEIVING AN ALMS AND EACH WINDOW AND PILLAR AND ARCH SEEMED TO FILL HER WITH LIGHT ESMERELDA: THE LIGHT OF NOTRE DAME (She is amazed by the beauty. FROLLO enters the cathedral and sees her and hides her scarf.) FROLLO: So a gypsy dares to enter this holy place? ESMERELDA: Why not? FROLLO: Because your kind aren’t allowed here. ESMERELDA: (upset) Why do you hate us so much? What did we ever do to you?! FROLLO: More than you know…What are you doing in here? ESMERELDA: I came here to find that boy. It was my fault he was up on the stage in the first place. FROLLO: The boy doesn’t need your help. He’s my charge. God loves even a monster. ESMERELDA: He’s no less human than the rest of us. FROLLO: Some of us are less human. In the moral sense.

31

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME ESMERELDA: (knowingly) Do you mean me? FROLLO: You dance in public without shame or modesty. ESMERELDA: I dance because I enjoy it (smiles). Others enjoy it, too, and give me money. FROLLO: As they would a woman of your repute. Do you also deny possessing black magic? ESMERELDA: If I had the power of magic, why wouldn’t I use it to help myself and my people?! FROLLO: (beat) You’re clever. You twist the truth just as you twist your body and dance. ESMERELDA: Your grace, there must be some charity inside you. If you’ve helped that boy, then surely you can extend that kindness to others almost as unfortunate. How you would wish others to treat you, could you not treat them? FROLLO: Our Lord Jesus said something very similar. (He walks toward her and she backs away). (The bells ring for midnight mass.) FROLLO: You see him on the cross there, gazing down on us? (He hears the choir) Midnight mass is starting. I must go. My child, though your people are lost, maybe something within you can be saved. Stay. Perhaps you’ll see what true beauty is and we….We can continue this conversation afterwards. (He leaves).

10. GOD HELP THE OUTCASTS

(Esmerelda and Congregation)

ESMERELDA (looking toward the cross): I DON’T KNOW IF YOU CAN HEAR ME OR IF YOU’RE EVEN THERE I DON’T KNOW IF YOU WOULD LISTEN TO A GYPSY’S PRAYER YES, I KNOW I’M JUST AN OUTCAST I SHOULDN’T SPEAK TO YOU STILL I SEE YOUR FACE AND WONDER WERE YOU ONCE AN OUTCAST TOO GOD HELP THE OUTCASTS HUNGRY FROM BIRTH SHOW THEM THE MERCY THEY DON’T FIND ON EARTH GOD HELP MY PEOPLE THEY LOOK TO YOU STILL

FREDERIC tries to capture her, but he is stopped and exits). PHOEBUS: It’s all right. I’ll take care of it. (To ESMERELDA). I thought you disappeared in a puff of smoke. ESMERELDA: Don’t believe everything you see. (She rushes toward him). PHOEBUS: Where do you think you’re going? (She pulls her knife out and places it in front of his neck). PHOEBUS: Calm down…Give me a chance to apologize. ESMERELDA: For what? PHOEBUS: For this. (He grabs her arm and knocks the knife out of her hand) Still, I am impressed. You fight almost as well as a man. ESMERELDA: Funny…I was going to say the same thing about you! (She elbows him in the chest and grabs her knife back).

33

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME PHOEBUS: Look, it’s my job to protect this cathedral. ESMERELDA: From dirty gypsies like me. PHOEBUS: You said it, I didn’t. But I do have my orders to follow. ESMERELDA: And if there’s one thing a good soldier knows, it’s how to follow orders. PHOEBUS: (shaking his head) Who said anything about my being a good soldier? ESMERELDA: Are you saying you’re not? PHOEBUS: I’m saying I have a job to do. It’s much better than the one it got me out of. ESMERELDA: Burying your comrades in unmarked graves?…You can look at me, you know. We don’t all cast spells. PHOEBUS: I know that…Where are you from anyway? ESMERELDA: (laughs) Oh, you’re asking a gypsy? (He nods). ESMERELDA: (Her expression changes) All I know is that I come from nothing. Just like you.

10B. OUT THERE II

(Congregation)

(At this moment, QUASIMODO moves and makes a noise. ESMERELDA hears him and rushes up through the cathedral). PHOEBUS: Now where are you going?! ESMERELDA: To see that boy! PHOEBUS: Why can’t you just mind your own business? ESMERELDA: It has to be somebody’s business (calling after him) Hello?! Are you up there?! (Phoebus exits) CONGREGATION: QUASIMODO, QUICK YOU’VE GOT TO HIDE YOU’VE GOT TO RUN

34

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME QUASIMODO! MUSTN’T LET HER FIND YOU QUASIMODO: Oh, no, mustn’t! CONGREGATION: FIND A PLACE AND QUICKLY SO SHE CAN’T SEE WHERE YOU’VE GONE HERE SHE COMES! I THINK SHE’S RIGHT BEHIND YOU! QUASIMODO: Oh, have to hide! CONGREGATION: THIS WAY! OVER THERE! CLIMB UP HERE! ESMERELDA: Hello?! CONGREGATION: THIS WAY! FIND A PLACE… TOO LATE! (the GARGOYLES freeze in position) ESMERELDA: (enters, sees him hiding) Please don't be afraid. I’m so sorry about what happened to you. (looks around) Oh, what an amazing place. Are you alone up here? Are you-.. Hello? Can you hear me? (She reaches out to QUASIMODO, and he turns to her). ESMERELDA: You can’t hear me can you? QUASIMODO: The bells. But I can still hear a little and read lips. ESMERELDA: (speaks clearer) Well, I thought I heard you when I came up here. QUASIMODO: Oh no, not me. Gargoyles…(Gestures to them, but they are gone). ESMERELDA: Gargoyles? Oh, they talk to you?

35

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME QUASIMODO: Everything talks to me. Wind, a bird, a tree, the bells: my friends. (Turns on himself) No, that’s stupid! ESMERELDA: No, no it’s not! I like your friends. Have you lived here a long time? QUASIMODO: Whole life. ESMERELDA: Really? Well, it seems like a wonderful place to live.

12. TOP OF THE WORLD

(Esmerelda, Quasimodo and Congregation)

QUASIMODO: Yes. But in winter…cold. Can see everything from up here. City gates, river Seine. ESMERELDA: Oh yes. It sparkles in the light. (She climbs up on the balcony ledge to see clearer) Small problem…I’m afraid of heights. (She teeters and QUASIMODO pulls her off of the ledge). ESMERELDA: Thank you. You’re very strong. QUASIMODO: Yes, I am. ESMERELDA: Still, I’m glad I can get to see things down there. GAZING DOWN FROM THE TOP OF THE WORLD SUDDENLY SEEING A DIFFERENT CITY THINGS LOOK TINY AND FRIENDLY AND FAIR SEEN FROM THE TOP OF THE WORLD WHEN YOU LOOK FROM HIGH ABOVE EVERYTHING SEEMS PRETTY SEEING LIFE FROM THE TOP OF THE WORLD NOTHING NEEDS FIGHTING AND NO ONE NEEDS PITY THANKS FOR GIVING THIS MOMENT TO ME WHEN JUST FOR A MOMENT THINGS STOP HERE AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD CONGREGATION: FOR ALL THESE YEARS

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME YOU’VE STAYED ALONE AND FREE FROM DANGER WE’VE SHARED YOUR FEARS IT WASN’T SAFE TO TRUST A STRANGER BUT MAYBE WE WERE WRONG HERE COULD SHE BELONG HERE? THIS GIRL APPEARS (QUASIMODO climbs onto the balcony and pretends to AND SHE IS KIND lose his balance. ESMERELDA is scared by this, and he AND WE’RE ADMITTING smiles at her. They both laugh.) WE’D GIVE THREE CHEERS TO SEE YOU BOTH FOREVER SITTING LOOK AT YOU SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD ESMERELDA: SEEING LIFE FROM (QUASIMODO walks along the edge of the balcony and THE TOP OF THE WORLD the GARGOYLES guide him along the way.) NOTHING NEED FIGHTING AND NO ONE NEEDS PITY THANKS FOR GIVING THIS MOMENT TO ME WHEN JUST FOR A MOMENT THINGS STOP HERE AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD CONGREGATION: THIS GIRL APPEARS AND SHE IS KIND AND WE’RE ADMITTING WE’D GIVE THREE CHEERS TO SEE YOU BOTH FOREVER SITTING LOOK AT YOU SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD QUASIMODO, SAY SOMETHING TAKE OUR ADVISE BE BRAVE AND SAY SOMETHING PLEASE DON’T THINK TWICE QUASIMODO SAY SOME— QUASIMODO: (shuts them up) ESMERELDA… ESMERELDA: Yes?

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME QUASIMODO: I…I…it’s nice, the two of us sitting. ESMERELDA: THE TWO OF US SITTING… CONGREGATION: THE TWO OF YOU SITTING…

(As the song ends, QUASIMODO and ESMERELDA are both sitting on the edge of the balcony.)

ALL: SITTING ON TOP OF THE WORLD (ESMERELDA moves his hair from out of his face. QUASIMODO gets off of the ledge and rings the bells for her). QUASIMODO: Oh, bells, oh, Gabriel, ring for her! Sing for her! Sing for Esmerelda! (The bells of so loud that ESMERELDA has to cover her ears). ESMERELDA: It’s so loud! QUASIMODO: Yes! ESMERELDA: Beautiful, but loud! QUASIMODO: All in good voice today! I knew today would be a special day! Look, up there is hot lead. ESMERELDA: Hot lead? QUASIMODO: Yes, I use to fix the bells. I show you! But careful, it’s very, very hot. FROLLO: (entering) QUASIMODO, WHAT ARE YOU DOING RINGING THE BELLS AT THE WRONG TIME?! SINCE WHEN HAVE YOU EVER- (sees ESMERELDA). Oh, my child. I looked for you after mass. I thought you left. Instead, I see my charge has distracted you. Quasimodo, you shouldn’t have. ESMERELDA: It was my fault, your grace. FROLLO: Oh, my son, don’t you have duties to perform? QUASIMODO: (bows) Yes, master. FROLLO: Don’t stray too far. (QUASIMODO exits reluctantly and gestures to the gargoyles to join him). FROLLO: Filling the boy’s head with dreams?

38

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME ESMERELDA: No, just thoughts. Nothing wrong with thoughts, is there? FROLLO: That depends. Well you see how impressionable he is. Little more than a child. ESMERELDA: Looking at him I don’t see a child. FROLLO: But you are in a way, you indicated a willingness to learn. A soul who wishes to be saved is all ready halfway there. I could instruct you in the gospels; share with you our Lord’s grace. You could come here every day. Better yet, perhaps…you could stay here. ESMERELDA: (smiles, but then recoils) Stay here? FROLLO: (getting more filled with lust) In the cathedral…with me (He attempts to grab her hand). ESMERELDA: (she becomes frightened and backs away) I don’t think that would be a good idea. FROLLO: No?… ESMERELDA: I see the way you look at me. FROLLO: (enraged) HOW DARE YOU?! Your soul is so unclean, you can’t imagine goodness in others. I should have known no gypsy would truly want to be saved. ESMERELDA: I don’t think I’m in need of saving. (She is slowly trying to get away). FROLLO: Of course, your kind never do. CAPTAIN! (He calls down to the square and grabs ESMERELDA). I could be a good friend to you, but I warn you, I could also be a terrible enemy! PHOEBUS: (below) Your grace! FROLLO: Escort this gypsy out of the church! She never sets foot here again and if she does she’ll be arrested! (He makes her leave) Quasimodo! That gypsy girlQUASIMODO: She…she was nice to me. FROLLO: Oh, was she? What do you know of people and their feelings, my boy?! QUASIMODO: Feelings? (realizing his mistake) I….nothing. FROLLO: Quasimodo, do you ever have impure thoughts? QUASIMODO: Impure…? FROLLO: Oh, a boy like you; all ready grown in body possessing those urges and ideas that come to a young man — (he is now furious) YOU MUST STOP. YOU MUST STOP THESE FEELINGS! (He smacks

39

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME QUASIMODO across the face). YOU MUST NOT FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF YOUR FATHER! HE WAS WEAK…and you have is corruption inside of you! Listen to me, Quasimodo, I’m warning you about her. She’s dangerous. She was put in our paths for a reason. To tempt us. Promise me you won’t think of her again. QUASIMODO: Think-? FROLLO: PROMISE! (He raises his hand to smack again). QUASIMODO: I promise…(he is crying now). (FROLLO opens his arms, and QUASIMODO embraces him). FROLLO: Soon we will be rid of her. CONGREGATION: (whispers) Esmerelda….Esmerelda….Esmerelda…. FROLLO: It’s just the two of us still, boy. You and I against the world. QUASIMODO: Yes, master! FROLLO: Good boy. Now sound the bells and send the city to sleep. Goodnight. QUASIMODO: Goodnight, master. (The bells start to ring) CONGREGATION: But despite his admonition to Quasimodo, Frollo himself cannot stop thinking about her. (FROLLO retrieves a cloak and goes out into the night) CONGREGATION: He began to walk the streets night after night, unable to bring himself to return alone to his cold, dark chambers. He barely knew what he was looking for, but he could not resist… FROLLO: (seeing a woman in the street)…so he saw her, everywhere!

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME PHOEBUS: Relax, just looking for for a little rest and recreation for my young friend, Fredric, as well. CLOPIN: Well, I’m sure we can arrange that. PHOEBUS: Actually, I’m looking for someone in particular. CLOPIN: I’m afraid that doesn’t surprise me, but unfortunately she’s all ready spoken for. ESMERELDA: Oh really, Clopin? Nobody speaks for me. CLOPIN: (disappointed) I am only looking out for your own welfare. ESMERELDA: I can look out for myself. PHOEBUS: You lose friends easily, don’t you? ESMERELDA: I have that way about me. PHOEBUS: Which makes seeing you that more difficult. ESMERELDA: And does that disappoint you? PHOEBUS: Does that surprise you? ESMERELDA: Frankly, yes. PHOEBUS: Me too. ESMERELDA: Well, you found me, what are you going to do about that? PHOEBUS: I told you. I’m not as good as everybody likes to think. ALL: IN THE DARK OF THE NIGHT FROLLO (from the shadows): BASE AND LEWD AND ODIOUS THIS VILE, DEPRAVED DISPLAY ALL: IN THE DEAD OF THE WINTER FROLLO: I CANNOT BEAR TO WATCH AND YET I CANNOT TURN AWAY

ALL: IN THE DARK OF THE NIGHT IN THE DEAD OF THE WINTER ÁNDO BÍRTO ZHAS THAI MOL PIYAS COME KEEP ME WARM UNTIL MORNING COME KEEP ME WARM UNTIL MORNING COME KEEP ME WARM UNTIL MORNING (At the bell tower) (QUASIMODO is looking down into the square, looking for ESMERELDA) QUASIMODO: Oh, I see her! GARGOYLE: That isn’t her… QUASIMODO: You’re right. I keep thinking I see her, everywhere. GARGOYLE: You’re not supposed to be thinking about her. QUASIMODO: Oh, I can’t help it. I miss her. GARGOYLE: Quasimodo, you can think about whoever you want. QUASIMODO: No! Master said I must not. GARGOYLE: He can’t tell you what to think and not think! Besides, you look down there almost every night. QUASIMODO: Yes, but this is different.

43

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME 14. HEAVEN’S LIGHT

(Quasimodo)

Everything is different now. QUASIMODO: SO MANY TIMES OUT THERE I’VE WATCHED A HAPPY PAIR OF LOVERS WALKING IN THE NIGHT THEY HAD A KIND OF GLOW AROUND THEM IT ALMOST LOOKED LIKE HEAVEN’S LIGHT I KNEW I’D NEVER KNOW THAT WARM AND LOVING GLOW THOUGH I MIGHT WISH WITH ALL MY MIGHT NO FACE AS HIDEOUS AS MY FACE WAS EVER MEANT FOR HEAVEN’S LIGHT BUT SUDDENLY AN ANGEL HAS SMILED AT ME AND TOUCHED MY FACE WITHOUT A TRACE OF FRIGHT I DARE TO DREAM THAT SHE MIGHT EVEN CARE FOR ME AND AS I RING THE BELLS TONIGHT MY COLD, DARK TOWER SEEMS SO BRIGHT I SWEAR IT MUST BE HEAVEN’S LIGHT

LOUIS: Frollo, you are a good man, but you know how I hate to be overly hasty. FROLLO: I do, Your Majesty, but be careful, unless the people think you are weak, and the various vergers around the city feel the need to get the upper hand. LOUIS: Very well, if you feel you must, but be well…

47

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME BOTH: “Prudent”. FROLLO: I assure you, Your Majesty, I will do only what is necessary.

They ducked into the shadows to avoid being seen by a pair of women at the windows holding candles, which sputtered in the gathering fog. The curfew had sounded long ago and the streets were becoming blacker and more deserted every moment. They could distinguish nothing of the mass of buildings, except black roofs at strange acute angles. And the labyrinth of alleys and bridges like a ball of thread tangled by a cat. PHOEBUS: I think you got us completely lost! QUASIMODO: No, should be…right…here. PHOEBUS: Here? Where? Where the hell are we? QUASIMODO: Looks like cemetery. PHOEBUS: Oh god. You’ve taken us completely in the wrong direction. QUASIMODO: Hmm, what’s that? PHOEBUS: I don’t hear anything. CLOPIN: (jumping out) Aah!!
