The Gift by Hafiz

Beautiful Gift

Hafiz, a secret Sufi, came to prominence in his day as a writer of love poems. That love transformed into an all-consuming passion for union with the divine. In The Gift, Daniel Ladinsky bestows on us the impassioned yet whimsical strains of Hafizs ecstasy. Never forced or awkward, Ladinskys Hafiz whispers in your ear and pounds in your ches t, naming God in a hundred metaphors. I once asked a bird, How is it that you fly in this gravity Of darkness? She responded, Love lifts Me. Like Fitzgeralds version of Khayyams Rubaiyat, the language of The Gift strikes a contemporary chord, resonating in the readers mind and then in the heart. Ladinskys language is plain, fresh, playful--dancing with an expert cadence that invites and sur prises. If it is true, as Hafiz says, that a poet is someone who can pour light into a cup, reading Ladinskys Hafiz is like gulping down the sun. --Brian Bruya Features: * Click here to view our Condition Guide and Shipping Prices This book is changing my life. Not only is Hafizs writing innovatively poetic, but some is laugh-out-loud funny and most is shockingly relevant. And, always, inspirational for anyone seeking even a slightly better understanding of faith, love and God. (Literally every poem addresses one of these three topics.) A reader gets a sense of Hafiz as a completely down-to-earth, fun guy you would want to hang out with, and, by reading this book, you feel like you are. A self-described simple man, Hafiz had achieved enlightenment and then humbly took on the duty of sharing his understanding with the world. The poems are self-referential, witty and edifying, and every time I read a few I feel better, no matter what my mood. I also feel a tiny bit closer to comprehending God, and how to be a better human being.

The book starts with a brief and informative discussion of its translation, which is very modern, and a little about Hafiz himself. The book is thereafter purely a collection of Hafizs poems, most of which are very short. Only a few are longer than one page, and thats with wide line spacing. The poems are eminently approachable and yet excessively profound. And very sensitive to all faiths and genders. He speaks only of God without advocating any organized religions. In fact, he a lmost advises against them. In one poem he writes: The great religions are like ocean liners and the poets are the lifeboats and all the passengers are throwing themselves off the sides.
