It was composed in 1923, with lyrics by Cecil Mack and Mack  and music by James by  James P. Johnson Johnson,, who frst introduced intro duced the stride piano method o playing.   The song was eature eatured d in the American American black lack Broadway  Broadway  mu musi sica call come comedy dy show show Runnin' Wild , which had its premiere at the New Colonial Colon ial Theat Theatre re   in New New York ork on Oct Octob obe er 29, 1923. The music o the dockworkers rom South Carolina   in Carolina inspired  Johnson  Johnson   to compose the music.
