Surely the rules were invented in order to help us succeed? But some things I’ve read recently have made me wonder about this, and made me realise that people like me often have a big success in life. As a young child, I was often stubborn, uncooperative, difficult eventhat incorrigible. I actually had to ask what thecalled last word meant, though I could easilyand guess it wasn’t anything positive. No one wanted to explain it to me, which made me think it had to be really terrible. Looking it up revealed the truth. Adults thought I was ‘unable to be improved or corrected’. In other words, they thought I was hopeless. Fortunately, I was too confident to take this very seriously. I knew I was intelligent. I often asked questions which interesting, happywas to dig into ado subjec subject, t, and I expressed myself wellteachers in speechfound and on pa per.. MyI was paper problem t hatdeep that I couldn’t things the way I’d been told. It seemed silly to me to read only five pages of a history book when the whole chapter was so interesting. And why do maths problems in a certain cer tain way when I could

REALISING AN ANTARCTIC DREAM I have always been fascinated by Antarctica, especially its wildlife and its huge, empty landscapes, but I never imagined that I’d be able to travel there. I satisfied my interest by watching films and documentaries and reading various articles by people who had been there. I discovered later that, like me, many people don’t realise that you can take a tour of Antarctica, which is strange considering the number of options that come up when you do a simple search on the Internet. I think we all like to imagine that it is the one place on Earth that is totally free of tourists. So, when a friend who shared my interest suggested we go on a two-week cruise to Antarctica Antarc tica together,, I actually together act ually hesitated for half a second. Was my dream of a lost continent about to be destroyed forever? But when she told me it would only cost a few thousand pounds, and would be a great opportunity for me to write about my own experiences there, I decided to go for it. Our ship sailed from the southernmost part of Argentina. The voyage included a very unpleasant time as we navigated the Drake Passage, one of the roughest areas of ocean in the world. Luckily, I had packed some medication to prevent getting sick, so it wasn’t nearly as horrible as I’ I ’d thought. Instead of being shut up in my cabin like so many other passengers, pas sengers, I managed to see huge sea birds touching the waves with their wings, and to enjoy the freedom of feeling a part par t of nature. Later, Later, in calmer waters, seeing the enormous whales near our ship was like travelling back in time and meeting the dinosaurs.

I have to say that sailing through Antarctica, Antarc tica, even in a fairly luxurious ship, gave me a feeling I had never got before from travelling. I felt I had reached a land where people had no place, p lace, as if we were visiting the Earth Ear th before humans. The few times we were actually allowed off of f the ship – once to see a place where penguins live, which smelled amazing! – were less interesting than just standing on the deck and admiring the hugeness of the place in the never-ending daylight. Sometimes a place you’ve dreamed about is a disappointment when you actually visit it, but what I felt in Antarctica Antarc tica was an amazing sense of familiarity and rightness. Yes, Yes, this was the place I had imagined. adapted from https://www.telegraph.co.uk
