Rewiews:

Jan 30, 2016 Rawa Muhsin Rated it: it was amazing I started studying this book somewhat seriously around two months ago. I was hoping to finish it quite soon. Since I had this goal in mind as I was progressing through the chapters and not quite revising the previous grammar topics suitably I started to benefit less and less from the later chapters. By the final chapters I would simply skip trying to solve the exercises and simply look at the solutions. I did try to memorize (though lousily) the word list of each chapter as I went ahead. quite soon. When I reached the end of the book I started memorizing the entire Hindi-English glossary at the end. When I properly finished that I came back to the start of the book and re-studied the dialogues and grammar of each chapter, making sure I understand every grammar topic and making sure I can analyze the grammar of every single expression in each dialogue and example. This second reading was a very fulfilling experience since this time I could actually what was being said and why it was being said like that. I also made a note of the difficult verb mixtures and wrote them down on a paper for my reference. I didn't redo the exercises this time, though, but I plan to redo them iA in the future after my next project. When I finished this I did another review of the Hindi-English glossary. Then I memorized the English-Hindi vocabulary (memorizing one way doesn't mean you know it the other way also). Along the way I would also listen to the Glossaries Alive audio files of Rupert Snell and go with the handouts. I am planning to redo these handouts more seriously in the near future iA. My next step or project for consolidating my basic knowledge of the language is to go with A Door Into Hindi by Afroz Taj: http://taj.chass.ncsu.edu/ It is a very good resource and is cross-linked to TYH, which makes it even better. Perhaps with or after this I might go through the Glossaries Alive handouts more seriously, trying to become comfortable with the various expressions in it. With or after these I can then start to read simple Hindi story or comic books such as the Hindi versions of Amar Chitra Katha. -------------------------To avoid what I had to go through I suggest either you go through this in the form of studying with a friend if available. You can try going more slowly and keeping up with each other, which should ensure that you don't miss points along the way. Another possible suggestion is to first memorize the Hindi-English glossary at the end of the book then start going through the chapters. This may be somewhat difficult in the beginning and may take some time, but it seems to be worth trying. In any case this book is a very good and inclusive introduction to learning the language. 3 likes 5 comments
