b) Cleaning Cleaningis car ed oul withthe aid ol waleror waterand detergents. In mostcaseswe recomnend 0,05% of a detergent lke Teepol. The cleaningsolutioncan be appliedcoldor hot, usingbutteMorlhmachines.Whenapplyinga solvenl cleanerby sprayingit wil be obviousthat aflerthe reactionttme(minrmum 30 minutes)the residues haveto be washedaway. ButteMorlhmachineswithcold or warmwaiershouldbe usedtor this, not too hot,otnerwtse the appliedsolventwill evaporate. The machinesmustbe operatedtromthe deckand mustbe lowereddown nto the tankat recurring intervalsin orderto obtainan eflectivecleaningthroughout the tank. The cleaningsolution(approximale y j0 tonsfor tanksup to 5OOcubicmeters)is sioredin a small IANK.

A butleMorthpumpwillcarryil via heatersand thenthroughthe butterworth machineInlome tankto be cleaned. Fromth s tankthe solutionhaslo be pumpedbackintothe storagetank or in lhe sloplankby meansof lhe cargopump. Throughout the cleaningoperationthe tankbottomhas to be keptas dry as possibleby constantlypumping. The cleaningsolutioncan be usedtwo or threetimesif lightpetrochemical productsare ro oe removeo. However,precautions haveto be takenin orderto preventbuildup ol staticetectriccharges. l Whensteaminga tankwithTolueneone has to considerthat the lowerexplosionlimil(L.E.L.)ot Toluene in air is 1.2volume% Therelore,becauseol the quantityof Tolueneneeded{or a propercleaning,this lowerexplosionlimit valueis alwaysexceeded. In orderto avoidan unsafemixturein the tank,inertng withnitrogengas untilan oxygenconlenlof lessthan5% is reached,has to be performed. The reqiriredquantilyol Tolueneis put intothe tank.The tank-halchis closedbut not secured.Steam is blowninlothe tank. The durationof the sleamingdependson lhe lemperature ol the sleamand pressuren the tank. The pressurein the lank shouldnol be too high;thereforethe tankhatchmustnot be secured.
