tung acupuncture...

Description

This series has been compiled and presented by a learning acupuncturist M.Manoharan. this all has happened accidentally. After my training under Master Sastriji in a residential workshop in Mumbai, on Tung and Tan Acupunture, master has asked me to teach Dr.Tan Balancing System on line and as a result this series of lessons lessons have been prepared by me and posted at regular intervels at acupuncture forums. I committed myself to complete this series before his next seminar and I have concluded this series today with the blessing of Master Sastry. I am very thankful to my master Mr.Raju Krishna, a director of Medicina alternative, Columbo from whom I have learnt TCM, which opened my doors to acupuncture world. I bow to both of my masters and this work is dedicated to them. Dr.Tan’s Balance M ethod et hod Acupunctu Acupunctu re Lesson 1: Introduction

Master Tung was born in china and some form of acupuncture system was practiced in the some Chinese families at that time. It was not based on TCM principle and it was only traditionally handed over to male members of the family for generations, kept very secretively. In 1949…Communists have taken over China during which period acupuncturists were treated very badly and many acupuncture fled out of china fearing for life. Master Tung was one such acupuncturist fled to Taiwan and started practice . Later he decided to make this system open and started teaching this system outside the family , taking any interested students. His system was slightly different from TCM and his meridians and points system is slightly deviating from TCM. His system is about treating opposite sides of the sick side of the body, literally treating the healthy side. This system has all major points on the extremities. i.e. hands and legs. This has kept the risk level minimum. Master Tan is one of Master tung’s deciple who further developed the balance system . His principle is treating contra lateral or opposite side will give instant result. This This system is famous for 1. Treat the problems distally 2. Use of minimum needles 3. Immediate result 4. Instantly know the used points are correct or not 5. Easy to follow 6. Need not have TCM knowledge

So to learn this system, let us have some fundamental. Our Body has 12 organs and these organs are catagorised in 3 groups. The grouping starts with Lung. Let us see the groups: Group 1:

Lung Large Intestine Stomach Spleen

Group 2

Heart Small intestine Urinary bladder Kidney Group 3

Pericardium Sanjiao or Triple warmer Gall bladder Liver Why the groups are defined in this order.?

Tan lesson 2: 2: Order of Qi Flow

The sequence of organs are arranged in the in the sequence of energy flow following the Chinese meridian clock. Though in all organs continuous energy is flowing, each organ gets its maximum energy flow at ever 2 hours. As per the clock the lung energy time is 3-5 am which means lung energy starts increasing from 3 am and reach its peak at 4 am and then starts decreasing and reaches its minimum at 5 am. Then the large intestine becomes more efficient between 5- 7 am. During this time our bowels try to evacuate the remains and wait for the fresh intake. Then the stomach works at its best between 7-9 am. If we want our digestion is to be better to use this time for breakfast. Then the energy shifts shifts to spleen meridian between 9-11 9-11 am. You can refer the following diagram for understanding energy flow through the meridians.

st

1  cycle starts from lung which is anatomical ly located at the top of the middle region. The cycle st

starts with hand yin organ of the 1  group (lung) reaches the hand fingers then returns as pair yang organ (LI) reaches the head and continues through next yang organ (stomach) reaches the leg fingers st

and returns to chest through yin meridian (spleen) and completes the cycle. In the 1  group 2 yin organs (lung and spleen) and 2 yang organs (LI and stomach) are covered. nd

2  cycle starts from Heart ,the next organ below lung goes to SI, then UB and kidney and returns to rd

Heart. Similarly 3  cycle starts from Pericardium , then TW, then GB ,then Liver and returns to PC. The 3 energy cycles independently runs within the group Gr 1, Gr. 2 and Gr.3 but also flows from Gr.1 to Gr.2 to Gr.3 and returns to Gr.1 covering all organs. Our body is a connection between yin energy from mother earth and yang energy f rom father heaven and both energies nurture our body. You can observe all yang channels starts from top and always flow down. All yin channels starts from ground and fl ows up. This is nature’s law. Now how this is important for TAN system let us explore in next lesson.

Lesson 3: Yin and Yang Balance We have seen now there are 12 organs and hence 12 main meridians. One should not get confused these organs are only controlled by these meridians. Meridians are only pathways going through respective organs and many times the diseases of organs are influenced by other meridians also. There are 6 yin meridians and 6 yang meridians. Other 2 major meridians DU and Ren which is called sea of yang and sea of yin respectively. 6 yin meridians are distributed 3 on hand and 3 on leg. Similarly 6 yang meridians are distributed 3 on hand and 3 on leg. Hand yin

When yin energy is balanced by yang energy, the health is in harmony. When yin is more, cold diseases and when yang is more, hot diseases occur. The body is designed in such a way that if yin channel runs on interior, the paired yang channel runs exactly opposite on the exterior side. If yi n channel runs on the medial side the paired yang channel runs on the lateral side, so that they perfectly balance each other. On hand Lung channel  runs on medial side, the paired yang channel Large int est ine   runs on the lateral side on the same axis. Similarly, Heart

Pericardium

On foot spleen channel  runs on medial side, the paired yang channel St omach channel   runs on lateral side on the same axis. Similarly, Kidney

They always balance each other. For the same reason if jingwell point of yin channel starts, with wood point, yang channel is just behind the same with, metal point. In the KO cycle wood is controlled by Metal. You can find the sequence of command points as below. Yin

In our body all yin points meet at chest/heart and All yang points meet at head… Yin is feminity …..yang is masculinity.. Now you know why most women decides by heart and men decides by head. Here I am not talking about intellectual level or which is superior. It is not superior or inferior. It is only an attribute.

Lesson 4 : M erid ians as t heir TCM representat ion Dr.Tan’s Global Balance method has 5 different systems of treatment protocols ( rather 6 which is rarely used) . In case of a problem in specific areas, these protocols helps us to identify the distal area of treatment. The problem can be a pain or internal disease. This makes it clear, that we are not going to treat the problems, on the problem area or local points. The more distal we go, the results are more effective. It is important to understand the meridian system and their chinease representation before embarking a journey i nto Tan’s Balance system. We so far understood there are 12 meridians. In each organ group ( refer lesson 1) there are 4 meridians. If we have a close look at the group, there are 2 yin meridians and 2 yang meridians in each group. If we look at micro level, we will understand 2 yin meridians are running in the up direction, where one yin meridian ends the other yin meridian starts and continue its course in up direction . One yin meridian starts from leg and ends at chest and another yin meridian starts and ends at hand. All Yin meridians starts from bottom of the leg (mostly fingers) and reaches the top of hand (fingers). Similarly one yang meridian of each group starts from hand, travels in the down direction ,ends at head . The other yang meridian starts at head further travels down and reaches the leg. This means yin meridians start from leg and reaches hand and yang meridians start at hand and reaches leg. Let us see with examples from group 1: Lung, Large intestine, Stomach and Spleen Spleen meridian starts from medial side of the toe ends at chest, and lung meridian starts at chest and goes up to the radial end of the thumb. Both are yin meridians. In TCM both meridians are considered as one channel and called as Tai Yin channel. nd

Similarly Large intestine meridian starts from radial end of 2  finger (hand) and ends at tip of the nose. Next the stomach meridian starts from below the eyes and travels down to lateral side of 2

nd

finger (leg). Both are yang meridians. In TCM both meridians are considered as Yang ming   channel. Now Let us see the chinese names of all meridians: Group 1 ………… Spleen & lung ………..Tai yin ……………Large intestine & Stomach : yang ming Group 2 ………… kidney & Heart……….Shao yin………….Small intestine & UB

: Tai yang

Group 3 ………… Liver & Pericardium…Jue yin ………….Triple Warmer & GB

: Shao yang

Remembering this pattern is going to make the understanding of Tan’s protocols lot easier. Tan.s system is based on imaging systems. Imaging one part of the body on to other part of the body. This makes it intresting… Let us go to imaging techniques in the next lesson.

Lesson 5 : Homologous structures

Friends, Let us see what makes the Tan’s Balance system simple and interesting. It is interesting because any one can understand easily. The key is to treat opposite side, contra lateral which means, if your left hand has got a problem, you treat the right leg and if your left leg has got a problem, you treat the right hand. Is it not simple?...But you will ask why it works this way? Do you know that, the left side of the brain controls the rig ht side of the body and the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body? If you know the answer for this, you know why Dr. Tan’s Balance system works this way. Good.. If you have a problem in left hand, you treat the right leg. But the question is where in the right leg?.... Let us compare the structure of hand and leg for a better understanding. 1. We have 5 fingers in the hand and so in the leg. 2. Next comes the wrist and so ankle in the leg. 3. Forearm has 2 bones, Radius and Ulna. Similarly lower leg has 2 bones, Tibia and Febula. 4. Next comes elbow , so the knee.. 5. Upper arm has single big bone called “Humerus” and upper leg has a single big bone called “Femur” 6. Hand hinges on a ball and socket joint at the shoulder and so as the leg on the hip. 7. Hand has Deltoid muscle to connect to the top of th e back and leg has Gluteal muscle to connect to bottom of the back. Look how similar hands and legs are made by the creator. It is a homologous structure. So the key to the problem on the leg, is located on the hand at the simi lar location. 1. Foot is similar to hand 2. Ankle is similar to wrist 3. Lower leg is similar to fore arm. 4. Knee is similar to elbow. 5. Upper leg is similar to upper arm. 6. Hip joint is equivalent to shoulder

Hence foot treats hand , ankle treats wrist and vice versa. So far what we have seen is a straig ht image. In most of the cases the more distal point from the point of problem , treats the cases more effectively. Does it look like the principle of leverage. Yes.. you get more leverage ,if you go more distal. We can also treat as per reverse image. In reverse image shoulder points treat ankle, upper arm treats upper leg and vise versa. Is it not interesting ?.. More imaging techniques on the next lesson.

Lesson 6 : Im aging systems on non simil ar part s

In last lesson Tan 5, we have seen regular and reverse correlation between homologous structures. i.e between hand and leg. In these cases we can treat any hand problem on opposite leg and leg problems on opposite hand. But then you would ask me , how to treat problems on head and torso. Now we take the imaging system which means, imagining the head and body on hand. Imaging system comes in handy to treat all parts of the body on the hands or legs which is by finding a correlation between two non similar parts. Picture 1

picture 2

Picture 1 depicts a relation between head and body with the arm. Again We have straight imaging and reverse imaging system can be appli ed here. In straight imaging system 1. The head is represented by shoulder 2. Chest and upper back is represented by upper arm 3. Navel is represented by elbow. 4. Lower abdomen & lower back is represented by fore arm 5. Hip is represented by wrist and 6. Pelvis is represented by hand In reverse imaging system 1. The head is represented by hand 2. Neck & shoulder is represented by wrist 3. Chest and upper back is represented by f ore arm 4. Navel is represented by elbow. 5. Lower abdomen & lower back is represented by upper arm 6. Pelvis is represented by shoulder So the body points can be treated on hand.

Picture 2 depicts a relation between head and body with the fore arm only. Again We have straight imaging and reverse imaging system can be applied here. In straight imaging system 1. The head is represented by elbow 2.

upper back is represented by upper forearm

3. Ribs/chest is represented by mid forearm. 4. waist is represented by wrist and 5. Pelvis /lower back is represented by hand In reverse imaging system 1. The head is represented by hand 2.

Neck/shoulder is represented by wrist

3. Ribs/chest is represented by mid forearm. 4. Abdomen is represented by upper forearm and 5. Pelvis /lower back is represented by el bow Similarly we can also imagine body on the leg also, so t hat the body problems can be treated on the leg. We will look at the leg correspondence system in the next lesson.

Lesson 7 : Imaging syst ems on non simi lar part s & Head

In last lesson Tan 6, we have seen regular and reverse correlation between complete arm and body & head , also between forearm and body & Head.. In these cases we can treat any body & head problem on corresponding hand . Now we take the imaging system which means, imagining the head and body on leg. Imaging system comes in handy to treat all parts of the body on the hands or legs which is by finding a correlation between two non similar parts. Picture 1

Picture 1 depicts a relation between head and body with the complete leg. Aga in We have straight imaging and reverse imaging system can be applied here. In straight imaging system 7. The head is represented by Hip 8. Chest and upper abdomen is represented by thigh 9. Navel is represented by knee. 10. Lower abdomen & lower back is represented by shin/calf 11. Hip is represented by ankle and 12. Pelvis is represented by foot In reverse imaging system 7. The head is represented by foot 8. Neck & shoulder is represented by ankle 9. Chest and upper back is represented by cal f/shin 10. Navel is represented by knee 11. Lower abdomen & lower back is represented by thigh 12. Pelvis is represented by Hip So the body points can be treated on leg.

Picture 2

Picture 2 depicts a relation between head and body with the lower leg only. Again We have straight imaging and reverse imaging system can be applied here. In straight imaging system 6. The head is represented by knee 7. Chest/ upper back/upper abdomen is represented by upper calf/shi n 8. Lower back & lower abdomen is represented by lower calf/shin leg 9. waist is represented by ankle and 10. Pelvis is represented by foot In reverse imaging system 6. The head is represented by foot 7.

Neck/shoulder is represented by ankle

8. Upper back/chest is represented by lower calf/ shin 9. Lower back/Abdomen is represented by upper calf/ shin and 10. Pelvis is represented by knee

Lesson 8 : Imaging Face on hand or Leg

In previous Tan lesson 6, we have seen imaging head to hip on complete arm or head to hip on fore arm and in Tan 7 , we have seen imaging of head to hip on complete leg or head to hip on lower leg. In these cases if you want to treat only the head/face , this is represented in a small area on hand or leg, which makes it difficult to identify the distinct parts such as fore head, eyes, nose ,mouth and chin. In such case imaging head alone on complete hand or complete leg helps. Let us refer picture 1. Picture 1

Picture 1 depicts a relation between face and the complete hand or complete leg. The face can be divided in 4 equal levels, keeping middle of the nose as centre. 13. In the first level is from top of the head to middle of fore head. 14. The second level is middle of fore head to middle of the nose. 15. The third level is middle of the nose to upper lips 16. The forth level is upper lip to chin. 17. If needed the face can be further divided. Let us explore the 4 levels with hand correspondence. 1. The first level of face is represented by top half of back arm nd

2. The 2  level of face is represented by bottom half of back arm 3. Middle of the nose is represented by elbow. rd

4. The 3  level of face is represented by top half of fore arm. 5. The 4

th

level of face is represented by bottom half of fore arm up to wrist.

6. If needed the levels can be further sub divided. Can the reverse imaging is possible in this case. As i know ,the books and materials available did not indicate that. But the question is why not? If wrist  as a flexible joint can represent neck which is flexible, then shoulder  which is a flexible joint, can also represent neck , then wrist   would represent top of the head. In case if the above representation does not work, i would suggest the reader to do reverse imaging. Let us give it a try.

Now let us see the 4 levels of leg correspondence. Let us explore the 4 levels with hand correspondence. 1. The first level of face is represented by top half of the upper leg (thigh) nd

2. The 2  level of face is represented by bottom half of upper leg 3. Middle of the nose is represented by knee. rd

4. The 3  level of face is represented by top half of lower leg.(calf ) 5. The 4

th

level of face is represented by bottom half of lower leg to ankle.

6. If needed the levels can be further sub divided. Also try reverse imaging if needed. We have seen so far most used imaging concepts. I would not say the imaging is limited to these options only. You may know Sujok uses imaging of head to hip on  fingers. So it is to be further explored depending on the similarity of body structures by the individuals. Now it is the time to recall the lessons read so far, since we have studied channels, their Chinease names, homologous structures, imaging techniques, mirrors etc. All these lessons which looks like a pieces of puzzles have to be assembled as a final picture to identify the problem and create a cure. We will be using this knowledge to understand Tan’s Balance System now. Tans 1-2-3 Dr. Tan has taught, there are 3 steps in curing a case. Step 1: Identify the sick channel which means which are the channels running through the problem area and identify them . The problem may have its location on one channel or 2 channels or it could be between 2 channels. Step 2: Find which meridian or meridi ans to be treated . This is the critical part of the process. For this Dr. Tan has created 6 techniques. Step 3: Treat the problem by needling required points on the corresponding meridian ( not the diseased meridian). How could i find the points.? Locate the area by using imaging techniques. Then palpate and find ashi points. If the point is not tender, then follow the imaging technique to find the relevant area and find the points by calculating the proportional distance from the anatomical land marks. Now let us learn the Tan’s 5 techniques from next lesson.

Lesson 9 : System 1 of Tan’ s Balance M et hod

With all the preparations we had so far let us dive into the Dr.Tan’s Balance systems. Let us recollect the fundamentals once again. 1.

Treat opposite limbs. ( I have not used term contra lateral here, since it does not apply to all systems)

2. Treat the healthy side, and not the sick side 3. Remember the channels by their chinease name so that it is easy to understand. 4. Use straight or reverse imaging systems and find tender points. 5. Remember the channel groups. Let us start with Syst em 1. Anat omical imaging syst em Channel of same chinease names t reat s each other , but hand treat leg and leg treats hand. 1. Hand Tai yin (lung) treats foot tai yin (spleen) and vice versa 2. Hand shao yin( heart ) treats foot shao yin (kidney) and vice versa 3. Hand jue yin(Pericardium) treats foot jue yin( liver ) and vice versa 4. Hand tai yang( Small intestine) treats foot tai yang( U B) and vice versa 5. Hand shaoyang( Triple warmer) treats foot shao yang ( GB ) and vice versa 6. Hand yangming ( large intestine) treats foot yang ming (stomach) and vice versa Let us look at the channel groups: 1 2 3 4

Application:

Let us see how homologous structures treat each other. 1. In case if knee pain is felt on the stomach channel below the knee, we have to treat LI channel on the hand on the contra lateral side. The pain is in leg yangming channel , treat hand yang ming channel, (yang ming treats yang ming)and The location would be, as per straight imaging system of homologous structures, in the fore arm on the LI channel near the elbow. If we assume a reverse imaging system , the location would be in the upper arm on the hand yang ming channel near the elbow. The pain point is 2 inch below knee, we can needle the area approximately 2 inch below or above the elbow depends on the imaging assumed.. The point can also be located by palpating and finding the tender points. 2. If the pain is felt on the wrist , it can be treated at ankle or hip on the corresponding channel depending on reverse imaging Let us see how the imaging of body on the hand treats (treatment of non homologous structures or non similar structures) a problem of body. Assuming a chest pain running through Liver channel, with reverse imaging of non similar structures , we can needle the fore arm. The tender points would indicate, which imaging system is appropriate in the particular case. So , by using different anatomical imaging systems using Tan’s System 1 ( refer above chart for channel correspondence), many ailments can be treat ed and instant results can be a chieved.

Lesson 10 : System 2 Branching Channel System

Basic rules to remember: 1.

Treat opposite limbs. ( I have not used term contra lateral here, since it does not apply to all systems)

2. Treat the healthy side, and not the sick side . Bei Jing treat same side of the problem (not same limb) if the problem is on one side only. 3. Remember the channels by their chinese name so that it is easy to understand. 4. Use straight or reverse imaging systems and find tender points. 5. Remember the channel groups. Let us continue with System 2. Branching Channel syst em  Channel of opposit e chinease names tr eat s each other , but hand treat leg and leg treats hand. 1. Hand Tai yin (lung) treats foot tai yang (UB) and vice versa 2. Hand shao yin( heart ) treats foot shao yang (GB) and vice versa 3. Hand jue yin(Pericardium) treats foot yang ming( stomach ) and vice versa 4. Hand tai yang( Small intestine) treats foot tai yi n( spleen) and vice versa 5. Hand shaoyang( Triple warmer) treats foot shao yin ( Kidney ) and vice versa 6. Hand yangming ( large intestine) treats foot jue yin (Liver) and vice versa Let us look at the channel groups: 1 2 3 4

Application:

Let us see how homologous structures treat each other in system 2. 1. In case if knee pain is felt on the stomach channel below the knee, we have to treat pericardium channel on the hand on the contra lateral side. The pain is in leg yangming channel , treat hand jue yin channel, (yang ming treats jue yin and vice versa)and

The

location would be, as per straight imaging system of homologous structures, in the fore arm on the jue yin(pericardium) channel near the elbow. If we assume a reverse imaging system , the location would be in the upper arm on the pericardi um channel near the elbow. The pain point is 2 inch below knee, we can needle the area approximately 2 inch below or above the elbow depends on the imaging system assumed.. The point can also be located by palpating and finding the tender points. 2. If the pain is felt on the outer wrist (triple warmer to say) , it can be treated at kidney points at ankle or hip on the corresponding channel depending on straight or reverse imaging Let us see how the imaging of body on the hand treats (treatment of non homologous structures or non similar structures) a problem of body. Assuming a chest pain running through Liver channel, with reverse imaging of non similar structures , we can needle the large intestine channel on the fore arm. If pain is in the lower abdomen, the channels of kidney, Ren and Stomach run through the area. If the pain is more in Kidney channel , 1. As per imaging system lower abdomen correspondence is upper arm. 2. Elbow represents navel. 3. As per the System 2 chart the balancing channel for kidney is Triple warmer 4. So the choice would be TW 10 or 11 or needle near TW 10,11 on the channel 5. and The tender points would indicate, which imaging system is appropriate in the particular case. So , by using Branching channel system, Tan’s System 2 ( refer above chart for correspondence), many ailments can be treated and i nstant results can be achieved.

Lesson 11 : System3 & 4 of Tan’s Balance Method Basic rules

1.

to remember:

Treat opposite limbs. ( In system 3 it is only opposites on the lateral side. Contra lateral not allowed)

2.

Treat the healthy side, and not the sick side Remember the channels by their chinese name so that it is easy to understand.

3.

Use straight or reverse imaging systems and find tender points.

4.

Remember the channel groups.

System3. Interior exterior system

We know in our body yin and yang channels are always paired and keep the health in balance. Refer Tan lesson 3.

If lung is an yin channel it is paired with large intestine

channel which is yang. They run parallel , always balancing each other. If lung runs on the interior side, LI runs on the exterior. In TCM also we treat opposite channel of the pair to recover the balance. In Tan system 3 opposite of the paired channel treats each other, but hand treat hand and leg treats leg.

1.

Hand Tai yin (lung) treats hand

2.

Hand shao yin( heart ) treats hand tai yang (SI) and vice versa

3.

Application:

Let us see how homologous structures treat each other in system 3. 1.

In case if knee pain is felt on the stomach channel below the knee, we have to treat spleen channel on the opposite leg.. The pain is in leg yang ming channel , treat foot tai yin limb) and

channel, (yang ming treats tai yin and vice versa on the opposite

The location would be, as per straight imaging system of homologous

structures, in the opposite lower leg on the foot tai yin(spleen) channel near the knee.

Can reverse imaging possible in this system. Try yourself .The point can

also be located by palpating and finding t he tender points. 2.

If the pain is felt on the outer wrist (triple warmer to say) , it can be treated at pericardium points at the inner wrist points on t he other .

Let us see how the imaging of body on the hand treats (treatment of non homologous structures or non similar structures) a problem of body. Assuming a chest pain running through Liver channel, with straight imaging of non similar structures , we can needle the gall bladder channel on the opposite side upper leg.

If

pain is in the lower abdomen, the channels of spleen and Stomach run through the

area. If the pain is more in stomach channel , below navel 1.

As per imaging system lower abdomen correspondence is lower leg.

2.

Knee represents navel.

3.

As per the System 3 chart the balancing channel for stomach is spleen

4.

So the choice would be SP 9 or near by on the spleen channel

5.

System 4: Chinese clock opposites:

It is already studied that the channel grouping is done based on the chinese meridian clock . Energy is at its maximum

for every 2 hours in each organ. it is not absolute

maximum. If the lung channel energy gets maximum between 3- 5 AM, the energy starts building up from 3 AM and reach its maximum at 4 AM and starts reducing from 4 PM and reaches its normal level at 5 AM. When an organs energy peaks at some time ,the opposite clock organ energy goes to its lowest maximum. Understanding this clock and its importance gives us options of understanding the diseased organs. If cough or breathing discofort is aggrevated at this time it pertains to lung. Lung gets maximum energy at this time. Then it tries to push out the blocks on the path. When action gets stronger even reaction gets stronger which becomes cough or breathing difficulty. When lung channel is at its peak between 3-5 AM UB is at its negative peak. This is a sinusoidal wave form. This gives an option for us to treat the affected channel by needling the directly opposite channel as per chinese clock. In Tan system 4 meridian clock

If you closely observe , similar to system 2 and 3 , yin channel treats yang channel and yang channel treat yin channel. Also we can treat hand channels by foot problems and foot channel for hand problems.

Let us see how homologous structures treat each other in system 4. 1. In case if knee pain is felt on the stomach channel below the knee, we have to treat spleen channel on the opposite leg.. The pain is in leg yangming channel , treat foot tai yin channel, (yang ming treats tai yin and vice versa on the opposite limb) and

The

location would be, as per straight imaging system of homologous structures, in the opposite lower leg on the foot tai yin(spleen) channel near the knee. Can reverse imaging possible in this system. Try yourself .The point can also be located by palpating and finding the tender points. 2. If the pain is felt on the outer wrist (triple warmer to say) , it can be treated at pericardium points at the inner wrist points on the other . 3. LI 11 problems can be treated at LU 5 and vice versa. Let us see how the imaging of body on the hand treats (treatment of non homologous structures or non similar structures) a problem of body. Assuming a chest pain running through Liver channel, with straight imaging of non similar structures , we can needle the gall bladder channel on the opposite side upper leg. If pain is in the lower abdomen, the channels of spleen and Stomach run through the area. If the pain is more in stomach channel , below navel

1. As per imaging system lower abdomen correspondence is lower leg. 2. Knee represents navel. 3. As per the System 4 chart the balancing channel for stomach is spleen 4. So the choice would be SP 9 or near by on the spleen channel 5. and The tender points would indicate, which imaging system is appropriate in the particular case. 6. In this particular example this is equal to System 3 If pain is in scapular area on the Small intestine channel, this can be treated through Liver channel  by imaging body on the leg. So , by using Chinese clock opposite system, Tan’s System 4 ( refer above chart for correspondence), many conditions can be treated..

Lesson 12 : System 5 & 6 of Tan’s Balance Method Basic rules

to remember:

6.

Treat opposite limbs.

7.

Treat the healthy side, and not the sick side Remember the channels by their chinese name so that it is easy to understand.

8.

Use straight or reverse imaging systems and find tender points.

9.

Remember the channel groups.

System 5: Chinese clock neighbour system

We have seen in system 3 interior treats exterior which means yin treats yang and yang treats yin. In Clock neighbour system , yin treats yin and yang treats yang. In the same yang group preceeding channel treats the suceeding channel and suceeding channel treats preceeding

channel.

In first

group large

intestine

channel

treats

stomach

channel

and

stomach channel treats large intestine channel. The next yin channel is spleen. Spleen channel is treated by heart channel in the next group. If you think why the spleen can not be treated by lung which is also yin, yes you can . But that is system 1, which is also yin treats yin and yang treats yang. In system 1 & 5 yin treats yin and yang treats yang. The common factor is in both cases large intestine treats stomach and vice versa. But in system 1 spleen treats lung,( The balance is obtained whithin the group.) in system 5 spleen treats heart from the next group.(Balance is obtained from yin organ of next group) If you observe precisely, all possible combinations are taken in Tan’s balance system. So within the system we will find over lapping. Note in System 5 also  hand treat foot and foot treats hand contralaterlly like in system 1.

Let us look at the channel groups:

1 2 3 4

Lung Lar ge intest ine stomach

Heart Small intest ine Urinary bladder

Pericardium Tr iple war mer Gall bladder

Spleen

Kidney

Liver

.

The channels marked with same colour treats each other on the opposite limb . Further the imaging system helps you to locate the corresponding area.

Liver channel

Lung

and vice versa

L I channel

Stomach channel and vice versa

Spleen channel

Heart channel and vice versa

S I channel

Urinary bladder and vice versa

Kidney channel

Pericardium channel and vice versa

TW channel

Gall bladder and vice versa

Application:

Let us see how homologous structures treat each other in system 5. 3.

In case if knee pain is felt on the stomach channel below the knee, we have to treat LI channel on the opposite hand.. The pain is in leg yang ming channel , treat hand yang ming and

The

channel, (yang ming treats yang ming on the opposite limb)

location would be, as

per

straight imaging system of

homologous

structures, in the opposite fore arm on the LI channel near the elbow. You can also do reverse imaging..The point can also be located by palpating and finding the tender points. 4.

If the pain is felt on the outer wrist (triple warmer to say) , it can be treated at Gall bladder points at the ankle points on the other leg.

Let us see how the imaging of body on the hand treats (treatment of non homologous structures or non similar structures) a problem of body. Assuming a chest pain running through Liver channel, with straight imaging of non similar structures , we can needle the lung channel on the opposite side upper arm.

If

pain is in the lower abdomen, the channels of spleen and Stomach run through the

area. If the pain is more in stomach channel , below navel 6.

As per imaging system lower abdomen correspondence is fore arm.

7.

Elbow represents navel.

8.

As per the System 5 chart the balancing channel for stomach is Large intestine

9.

So the choice would be around LI 11 or near by on the LI channel

10. The

tender

points

would

indicate,

which

imaging

system

is

appropriate

in

the

particular case.

So , by using Clock neighbor system, Tan’s System 5 ( refer above chart for correspondence), many channel related conditions and blockages can be treated..

System 6: Hand/ Foot Micro system:

Though there were 5 systems of Dr.Tan w hich is in routine use, there is another system is discussed in literatures. This system represents the hand / leg / body on the carpel/meta carpel and phalanges on the hand and on tarsal / meta tarsal / phalanges on the foot. This system is not so popular.

General Rules for Tan System: 1.

Treat opposite or contralateral as per desired system

2.

Use different imaging systems

3.

Treat distally.

4.

Use of tender points

5.

Retain needles for about 30-45 minutes

6.

The succeeding treatment shall be before symptoms fully reappear.

7.

System 1,3 & 5 treat contralateral.

8.

System 2 & 4 treats opposite (laterally opposite) and contralateral.

Balancing Table:

Dr.Tan’s system is known

for getting immediate results in pain and also used in internal

diseases. Generally though System 1 is most popular but each system has its own areas of use and advantages. I have made a sincere attempt to make the system understandable in a simple form and the ideas used are the original of Dr.Tan. Above a balancing chart for all systems are given for ready reference. I thank all my masters and exclusively Master Sastry for asking me to teach Dr.Tan’s System and I have put in my earnest effort to honour his words and tried to live upto his expectation. Though I have tried to avoid any mistake creeping in this document, I request readers to bring it to my notice if any mistake has happened inadvetantly and I will be solely responsible for such mistakes. Hope everyone will get benifitted in eliciting a cure in most of the conditions and I am thankful to all living and non living masters who has spent their life time in developing this system for the betterment of mankind.

This is a small effort from M.Manoharan, a learning acupuncturist and a student of Mr. Raju krishna , my master in TCM and master Mr.Sastry in Tung and Tan System. I am always indebted to them.
