Kunstmuseum fUr Kinder 1987- 89 Hyogo Das Museum liegt auf einem Hugelriicken mit Blick auf die ausgedehnte Wasserflache eines Sees. Es macht sich zur Aufgabe, Kindern die Kunst nahezubringen. Die dreiteilige Anlage umfaBt das eigentliche Museum, eine Workshop-Einheit und einen zwischen den beiden Komplexen liegenden Platz. Die einzelnen Einheiten sind durch einen Iangen Weg verbunden, den eine Reihe von Mauern markiert, die einen markanten Einschnitt in den Hiigelabhang bilden. Das Museum ist ein multifunktionaler Komplex, der eine Bibliothek, einen Theaterraum im lnnern sowie eine Freilichtbiihne, eine Galerie, eine Mehrzweckhalle und ein Restaurant enthalt. Er besteht aus zwei versetzt angeordneten Bauki:lrpern, von denen der eine an den facherfi:lrmigen Bauki:lrper anschlieBt. der {len Theatern Raum bietet. Rund um das Museum sind Wasserbecken angelegt. Der zentra le Platz ist ein ummauerter AuBenraum mit sechzehn neun Meter hohen, gitterfi:lrmig angeordneten Saulen. Die Workshop-Einheit, ein zweigeschossiger Gebaudeteil mit quadratischer Grundflache, ist ihrerseits auf eine geraumige Piazza gesetzt.

Children's Museum 1987-89 Hyogo Sited on a hill overlooking a broad lake, the Museum is a cultural facility for the artistic education of children. The facility consists of three parts- the main museum, an intermediate plaza, and a workshop complex- all linked by a long pathway marked by a series of walls which slice dramatically through the slope of the hill. The main museum is a multi-functional complex, containing a library, indoor and outdoor theatres, an exhibition gallery, a multipurpose hall, and a restaurant. It is composed of two staggered volumes, one of which connects with a fanshaped volume housing the theatres. A series of manmade pools surround the museum. The intermediate plaza is a walled external space, containing a grid of sixteen nine metre-high columns. The workshop complex consists of a two-storey workshop building, square in plan, and set within a plaza.

Himeji Das Literaturmuseum enthalt einen Vortragssaal und Ausstellungsraumlichkeiten fUr die Dokumentation von Autoren, die zu dieser Gegend in besonderer 8eziehung stehen. Der Entwurf des Gebaudes nimmt wesentlich Bezug auf eine in der Nahe gelegene historische Sehenswiirdigkeit, SchloB Himeji, und das Museum ist von kiinstlich angelegten Teichen und Garten umgeben. Das Gebaude, drei Stockwerke plus UntergeschoB, setzt sich aus zwei kubischen Baukorpern zusammen - jeder aus einem Grundraster von neun Einheiten entwickelt - . die sich in einem Winkel von 30 Grad uberschneiden. Ein zylindrischer Baukorper umfangt einen der beiden Wurfel. Er bildet einen dreigeschossigen Leerraum. An der lnnen- und AuBenwand des Zylinders fiihren aufsteigende Rampen entlang.

Museum of literature

Himeji The Museum of Literature houses a lecture hall, and exhibition space for displays relating to authors who have a significant connection with this locality. The design of the building focuses on its relationship with the nearby historic landmark, Himeji Castle, and the museum is wrap· ped by artificial ponds and gardens. The building, with three storeys above ground and one basement level, is composed of two cubic volumes- each based on a grid of nine units- which overlap at a 30-degree angle. A cylindrical volume encompasses one of the cubes, and contains a three-storey void. Ramps wind around both the interior and exterior walls of the cylinder.

Museum «Wald der Graber» 1989- 92 Kumamoto Der c:Wald der Graber• ist ein Museum, das zur Aufgabe hat, das historische Kulturerbe der Hiigelgraber von lwabaru in der Prafektur Nord-Kumamoto zu erhalten und zu fordern. Um das Gelande so weit wie moglich unberiihrt zu lassen, wurde das Museum als erhohte Plattform entworfen, von der aus sich die Grabstatten und ihre Umgebung iiberblicken lassen. Eine Halite des Baukorpers ist unter den Boden verlegt. Die Besucher nahern sich dem Museum zu FuB, nachdem sie zunachst das iippige Grun eines Waldes durchquert haben. Das Museum liegt zwar in 250 Meter Entfernung vom beriihmten Futago-zukaeinem groBen Grabhiigel in Form eines Schliissellochs -. ist aber iiber einen Mittelpunkt symmetrisch darauf bezogen. Die Anlage wird so als moderner Tumulus wahrnehmbar. Der Komplex besteht aus einem Quader von 26 Meter Breite und 79,2 Meter Lange, einem kreisrunden Hofraum von 15,8 Meter Radius und einer L-fOrmigen Wand. die bis zum Mittelpunkt des Holes durchstoBt. Das Grabungsgelande liegt unmittelbar jenseits der Hofwand. Ober eine Rampe, die sich an der lnnenseite der Wand entlangzieht, wird der Besucher an ausgestellten Grabfunden vorbeigefiihrt.

Forest of Tombs Museum 1989- 92 Kumamoto The Forest of Tombs Museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting understanding of the historic cultural legacy of the lwabaru burial mounds in Northern Kumamoto Prefecture. In order not to intrude on the site any more than necessary, the museum was designed as a raised platform from which the tombs and their surroundings can be viewed, and half of its volume buried below ground. Visitors approach the museum on foot. passing first through a lush green forest. Though 250 meters away from the famed Futago-zuka, a large keyholeshaped tumulus, the museum is symmetrical to it with respect to a midpoint, engendering the perception of the museum as a contemporary 'tumulus'. The building consists of a 26m x 79.2 m rectangular volume. a circular courtyard 15.8 metres in radius. and an L-shaped wall that penetrates to the center of the circular courtyard. The excavation grounds lie just beyond the wall of the circular courtyard, while inside, a ramp winding around the wall leads visitors through displays of artifacts.

Historisches Museum Chikatsu·Asuka 19850saka Das Historische MuseumChikatsu-Asuka wid met sich der Ausstellung und Erforschung der Kofun-Kultur - der Kultur der traditionellen Hugelgraber. Anders als die konven· tionellen Museen stellt es die Ausgrabungsobjekte nicht nur aus, sondern dient zugleich als Ort, von dem aus die Graber selbst in ihrer ursprunglichen Umgebung betrachtet werden konnen. Das Gebaude liegt in einer Senke und ist als Hugel konzipiert, von dem aus die gesamte Ausgra· bungsstatte Oberblickt werden kann. Das Dach- eigentlich eine ausgedehnte getreppte Plaza - soli fur Auffuh· rungen und Veranstaltungen genutzt werden, und die ganze Einrichtung samt Gelande ist als regionales Erho· lungszentrum geplant. Die Ausstellungskojen im lnneren des Museums liegen im Dunkel, und die Objekte werden so gezeigt, wie sie in den Grabern gefunden wurden. Der Besucher erhalt auf diese Weise den Eindruck, als betrate er eine wirkliche Begrabnisstatte.

Chikatsu-Asuka Historical Museum 19850saka The Chikatsu-Asuka Historical Museum is dedicated to exhibiting and researching Kofun (burial mound) culture. Unlike conventional museums, this building not only exhibits the excavated objects, but acts as a place from which the tombs themselves can be viewed in their sur· roundings. The building, sited in a basin, was conceived as a hill from which to view the entire excavation area. Its roof, which is in effect a farge stepped plaza, will be used for various performances and events, and the entire facil· ity and its grounds are designed to function as a recreational hub for the region. Inside the museum, the display areas are dark, and the objects are exhibited as they were found in the tombs. Visitors experience the sensation that they are entering an actual tomb.
