LIFE IN ROMAN TIMES In 117 AD, the Roman Empire was very big and important and it covered lots of different countries including today’s Spain, France, Germany, Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Croatia. Part of Britain was also Roman and Scotland was, too, but for a shorter time. The Romans were famous for building very good roads, bridges and dams*, for their laws and their language. But what was life really like back then? Let’s have a look. School: Not all the children had money to go to a school in the town or have a teacher at home. Even fewer girls went to school; it was mostly boys who did. In poor families, the children worked to help their parents.
Toys: Children in Roman times played with toys similar to the ones you have: balls, dolls, toy animals and board games. They also had small letters to practise their spelling. Food: Romans liked eating bread, vegetable soup, fish and meat like sausages. Poor people didn’t have meat very often and they didn’t have a kitchen in their house. They cooked their food at a bakery or had something to eat in the market. Did you know that there was ice cream in those days? *dam = a very strong wall that stops a river

or S (Stirling). THREE GREAT PLACES IN SCOTLAND Edinburgh: Come and visit this great city. There are many green parks to have picnics in and a fantastic castle to visit. Come in August for the International Festival of Music, Dance and Theatre. The streets in the city centre are filled with performers, colours and music. Every day for three weeks, there are shows and plays for everyone. Glasgow: Bigger than any other city in Scotland, this is the place to spend your holiday. Edinburgh is perhaps prettier,
but there are so many things you can do here: go to the Botanic Gardens, visit the museums and galleries. The first football museum in the world is here! Stirling: Stirling is a small Scottish town, but it’s got a lot of history. Visit the National Wallace Monument. Here you can see the sword that Wallace, the real Braveheart, used. On a sunny day, come to Blair Drummond Safari Park and see the wild animal reserves and shows.
