Introduction of thuja in homoeopathy Thuja occidentalis The history of th e introduction of this drug is somewhat novel. Hahnemann received in his office on one occupation a patient who complained of some symptoms about the genital organs, which were, to say the least, suspicious. There was a thick purulent discharge from the urethra, with burning on urination. There were also small pimples, attended with itching, about the glans penis, and some swelling of the parts. Hahnemann charged his patient with having contracted gonorrhoea. This was stoutly denied by the patient, who, by the way, was a theological student. However, on the principle prevailing in every court, to consider a man innocent until he has been proved guilty, Hahnemann determined to give th e young man no medicine, and directed him to report in three days. At the end of that time he came back well. Hahnemann was puzzled. He questioned the patient closely, but found no cause. Then the young gentleman remembered that as he sauntered through a garden a few days before he picked some leaves of the arbor vitae and chewed them. This led Hahnemann to investigate the properties of Thuja, and he discovered that the theological student had told the truth. Hahnemann gives us only 634 symptoms of Thuja, and Allen's Encyclopedia gives us 3,370 symptoms. For easy understanding I have tried to explain the essence of Thuja Occidentalis in a small dramatic script. The Thuja patient in the consulting room. Here one has to imagine that the patient has arrived in the consulting room of a homeopath for her sickness.

Waiting room Observation. 1) Patient is repeatedly asking the receptionist wh en her turn will come. 2) Patient paces about in the waiting room, does not sit down, walks in a and sometimes walks in a circle. 3) Finally when her name is called she is quite unaware of the surroundings and then may suddenly say "Oh! It is my turn ?" 4) Or occasionally she may sit on the sofa and doze off. When suddenly her name is called the patient awakens and gets irritated at the receptionist complaining "why are you shouting"? or may absent - mindedly ask "where am I "? 5) Or else while sitting on the sofa she may ask other patients as to how the doctor is, Is he good? Does he cheat his patients ? does he prescribe steroids in Homoeopathic medicines ?" 6) "You see, I am usually more comfortable with a female Dr. Because I just cannot bear to have a male Dr. As my physician."

7) As she enters, the physician observe her stance - Sickly looking - The skin is greasy, shiny and oily as if it had been rubbed with vaseline. - Prominent varicose veins on the cheeks and on the alae nasi - Bushy eyebrows. - Extremely hairy patient appears like a gorilla. 8) The physician pulls up a chair for the patient and patient shouts, "Okay, Okay, I can do it myself". 9) As the patient starts describing her complaints she speaks slowly, hesitantly, mostly confused and monosyllabic 10) Sometimes the patient may not know how exactly to describe her complaints as she herself does not know what to tell about her sickness. © Copyright 2000, Archibel S.A.

11) Sometimes to cheer up the patient the Doctor may say "well you look so fresh and healthy" The patient says " Doctor  you are always joking. I don't feel fresh at all".

12) While describing her complaints the patient does not give the full symptoms. 13) The patient may sometimes complain that the word 'DOCTOR' terifies her. I' m always afraid of the Doctor because these days I read in the newspapers and see films about Doctors. 14) The patient than asks the doctor "who is this person sitting next you ". The Doctors replies "My Assistant". Patient says " I've never seen him before." 15) The patient complains " I've gone thin, I feel so delicate in every organ that I will break like dry wood". She further adds "You are perhaps looking at the bulk of my muscles. Perhaps from outside you cannot judge how I am and how I feel. I am like a big empty earthen pot, made of raw earth; I feel so eroded from inside as if brittle and I will break under slightest pressure" she speaks with increased mental strength and slows down to a halt.

16)The patient wants to speak certain things, scratches her head and tries to recollect what else is there to tell about herself, but does not succeed and then she may angrily yell "what is all this ? what is all this? Have I to hunt for the words to express myself doctor? These days I feel my thoughts are stagnated in one corner of my mind and I do not recall them easily". Patient may also further express wh at a useless person I' am? I cannot even explain my symptoms to my Doctor. I feel I have no right to live and suddenly she recollects and says "Oh ! yes, I want to tell you about my abdomen. Occasionally it gives me the sensation as if I am with a child, also most of the time I feel I have a serpent in it. This thought persists, seems to be coming from my abdomen.

As the physician refers the Homoeopathic Materia Medica Medica the patient sits quitely. I suffer from a fear that originates from the stomach. Hissing sounds emanate from my abdomen all th e time. My present trouble of these abnormal sensation is because of some omission on my part. Last year I visited a holy shrine but I do not remember of having promised an offering to the deity. Some spirits keep on reminding me all the time of having committed a wrong by not keeping my word. Because of this I am always afraid of some impending evil. I feel disgusted with everything and then go back to myself. Dr. Many a times I have an impulse to kill myself. I have tried on occasions to even jump from the window, due to my abdominal complaints, I am w eary of life and I am utterly discouraged. I desire nothing but death.

Medorrhinum Medorrhinum You have to imagine over h ere a middle aged man who comes to the O.P. D. of the Mumbadevi Homoeopathic Hospital, Vile Parle, Bombay to see Dr. J.S. The patient is accompanied by his dog and a close friend. OBSERVATION As he enters the gate he is stopped by the security officer who shouts, "Dogs are not allowed in the hospital". The patient replies, very arrogantly and says. "Do you know this is not an ordinary dog ? he is an original German breed dog. Small people like you will never understand what I mean". The dog is tied outside the building and the patient and his friend walk into the building and inquire for Dr. J.S. the patient has been given an appointment, for 10 O'clock in the morning but he arrives at 9 O'clock sharp and as the time passes, the patient becomes extremely anxious and asks the receptionist, medical students and the patients sit ting in the waiting room, "When is Dr. J.S. going to arrive ? I am getting late to reach my office. I hope he comes in time and does not come late as most of the honoraries do". The friend tells the patient to sit quietly on the chair but the patient get angry and says, "you better be quiet. I am the patient, you do not know how I am feeling from inside".

OBSERVATION Dr. J.S. arrives and the patient gets extremely excited and shouts with joy, "Here comes my great Doctor". The patients's name is called and he does not give any notice. Not once but many times the patient's name is called. The patient's friend gives him a push, and tells the patient; "Go quickly, they are calling your name since long. The patient says "Why the hell do they have to shout ? I am not deaf." © Copyright 2000, Archibel S.A.

The patient walks inside the room. Dr. J.S. gives him a smile, but suddenly our patient who was so excited becomes very quiet and gives a very sad and depressed look to the Doctor. The Doctor th en asks his name and th e patient cannot recollect what is name is . after a minute, he answers; that too incorrectly; and then suddenly starts weeping. He w eeps for a minute and then becomes calm, and again he comes back to his original state. The Doctor inquires, "Please tell me your complaints" th e patients replies, "Doctor You see, you see! Just a minute, actually  you see will you just repeat the question". The Doctor then repeats his question and then the patient answers "The greatest difficulty with me is, I have an extremely weak memory. It has affected my work so badly that being a bank manager, I cannot remember the dates of the month, neither can I remember what I have said or what someone has told me. Sometimes I even forget the thought which I was about to write. Doctor recently my secretary has pointed out that I make lots of mistakes in spelling and while giving her dictation". "Doctor even though I am highly educated and I am settled in life I have not yet taken any decision about my marriage and as a result my sexual life is full of perversions. 'As a child, I had a very strong sexual desire and I used to masturbate almost daily. Also I used to see lascivious dreams with frequent wet pollutions. "When I was 13 years old I had my first experience of intercourse, and then subsequently with various girls. I used to practice various sorts of perversions that can be given in a psychiatry book, to the extent that I have even practiced Homo-sexuality".

OBSERVATION "You would be surprised to know that as a child I was an extremely dull and dwarfish person. My school friends and teachers th used to call me a mentally retarded child. Suddenly I found that when I entered the 10  class my academic performance improved dramatically and I started getting prizes and scholarships for the same and today you can see I am a C.A. with a first class in Business Management from London University. "Doctor I have a strong suspicion that someone is in the room near the wall and is trying to see and hear what we do. I do not known why, but since the last few months even when I am walking on the road I feel someone is behind me or some persons are following me. You know Doctor I am so delicate that I have to protect myself otherwise I will be doomed or I may turn insane. Sometimes it so happens that in my office, I see animals and rats in my room but when I tell my secretary about this she denies that there is anything in the room." The physician now wants to examine the eyes of the patient so he switches off the light. The patient shouts, "Please ! please! Doctor don't make this room dark as I am afraid of drakness and I see ghosts. In short Doctor I am strongly averse to stay alone at night". "my present trouble is, I was startled to receive the news of the death of my very near and dear friend. These days I feel that death can come to anyone and I am taking all t he possible precautions, so that I should not die early".

"Doctor you won't believe, I was feeling many days in advance that someone very close to me is going to die. This happened may a times in my life. Whatever I predict generally comes true." The Doctor now tells the patient that he should see him next week as his case will take a lot of time to study. As the patient comes out of the room, he asks his friends, "is this the same waiting room we had come to half an hour back ? are you sure this is the same place?" The friend, tell him, "Yes, Yes', we are in the same place". In the waiting room the patient finds an idol of shiv (an Indian diety). The patient rushes immediately to the idol and bows down and touches the idol at least 50 times and prays. His friend comes and tells him, "Come on now, we are getting late". The patient replies, "If you are getting late you may go. This is the only way I can neutralise my sin, by praying to God." Finally when the patient leaves the clinic he sees his friend waiting in the long queue at the bus stop. Our patient engages a taxi and goes away leaving his friend beh ind.

Introduction by Swan in 1848. Potencies were made from gonorrhoeal discharge from the urethra 1) during acute stage 2) during the chronic or the gleet stage. 120 years ago Hahnemann formulated the concept that all chronic diseases are the sequelae of 3 miasms - Ps ora, Sycosis and Syphilis. The orthodox physician certainly recognises the remote effects of Syphilis and tuberculosis, though he might not be so ready to concede a similar hereditary potency to other veneral, notably to gonorrhoeal infections apart from occasional arthritis. Nevertheless, the Homoeopath believes that t he results of gonorrhoeal infections are not only acute, but also remote. A series of manifestations and symptoms in patients have been observed and collected, by which the effects of remote gonorrhoeal infection may be recognised. To these manifestations, and the morbid state which slowly develops after a veneral but non-syphilitic infection, the term Sycosis has been applied. MASTER F. J., The Bed Side Organon of Medicine (mtf26) MASTER Farokh Jamshed

How the materia medica sould be studied For the beginners the easiest way study Materia Medica is to follow the pattern given below: A. The source-books like those of Gibson Miller, Robin Murphy 's Lotus Materia Medica, encyclopaedia Britannica will give  you a lot information. B. Proving-It is essential to know how the remedy was introduced into the Homeopathic Materia Medica. Hahnemann s Material Medica Pura, Hering 's Guiding Symptoms and Allen 's Encyclopaedia would be of great help. ( Warning: be very careful of newly introduced remedies in our literature that have cropped up due to over-enthusiasm of some doctors who intend to gain cheap publicity by proving a remedy in a weekend seminar or who prove a remedy not by the conventional method as mentioned in the Organon of Medicine ). C. The introductions to remedies given by William Boerike, Clarke 's Dictionary of practical Materia Medica will give you an idea of the main spheres of action and the major symptoms of the remedy. Note: The italicized information in the above mentioned Materia Medica is more important than t he rest of the text. D. The next step is to learn general symptoms. Frans Vermeulen 's Materia Medica and Bhanja s Materia Medica best give this.

E. The mental picture is best studied in two ways. First is to read the rubrics in the section of the mind of a given remedy, best given by Roger Van Z andvoort in his Complete Materia Medica of the Mind. The second way is to read the mental symptoms as described in a picturesque way by Dr. Kent in his Lecture 's of Homeopathic Materia Medica, Studies of Homeopathic Remedies by Dr. Douglas Gibson and Portraits of Homeopathic Medicine by Catherine R. Coulter F. Last but not the least, modalities should be studied using Comparative Materia Medica by Dr. E. A. Farrington and Clarke s Dictionary of Practical Materia Medica. Recently George Vithoulkas published his Essence, Roger Morrison published his Desktop Guide. All the above literature when studied in depth will result in a splendid Knowledge of Materia Medica.

How the materia medica should be studied through For beginners,I would recommend "How to study Kent 's Repertory by Dr. Margaret Tyler. The first step is to run through all the rubric of the repertory with only one remedy, which is in the 3 example; 1. Frightened easily -night, wakens as 3.00 a.m. : Arsenic alb. Kent 's repertory page 49. 2. Indifference to welfare of others: Sulph., Kent 's repertory page 55. © Copyright 2000, Archibel S.A.

3 Irritability -sends the nurse out of t he room: Cham., -- Kent 's repertory 59. The next step is to go through the rubrics where more that one remedy is mentioned, but has only one remedy of the third degree. For example: 1. Aversion - approached, to being: Kent s repertory page 9.9 remedies out of which Lyc. Is of the third degree 2. Anxiety - Warmth from: Kent 's repertory page 9. 3 remedies out of which Kali-s. is of the third degree. 3. Embarrassed - ailment after: Kent 's repertory page 39. 8 remedies out of which Sulph. Is of the third degree.

If you understand the rubric you have been reading and if you remember the remedies of the third degree you will know the main pillar on which rests th e essence of a remedy. A good English Dictionary, preferably Webster 's is required to understand the real meaning of the rubrics. I have tried to make this work easier by w riting a book "Perceiving Rubrics of the Mind"  The above work can also be done by good software like Hompath, Mac-Repertory and Radar. the only disadvantage is that  you will miss the essential step of keeping a major part of this information in your mind. Further it is essential to understand the cross- reference. Dr. P. Sankaran 's booklet is one of the most valuable basic books, which I had used during my student days. Recently with my learned friend Dr. Jawahar Shah I have compiled a book on cross-reference for the chapters of the mind which will be of great use to the students and practitioners. There are quite a lot of additions to the Kent s Repertory. The best selections of additions were made by George Vithoulkas, Bill Gray and Roger van Zandvoort being amongst the others. In order to pain a good idea of mental symptoms of a particular remedy, there is an excellent book -Materia Medica of the Mind by Dr. H.L. Chitkara, which one can consult. He has made the study of Materia Medica and Repertory most interesting.

Susceptibility and miasm in practice All of us have read about susceptibility and miasm from various philosophical book. The ones that I feel are most practical are: 1. The Symposium Volume by Dr. M. L. Dahawle. 2. The Science of Homeopathy by Dr. George Vithoulkas To understand the practical utility of the above, I divide my patents into 3 categories: Category "A": Cases that have been cured, after one or t wo remedies in a very short time. Category "B": Cases that are cured after some years but they needed three or four remedies. Category "C": Stubborn cases that have been given more than five-six different remedies yet did not get cured. The fact that these categories of patients occur in practice has little to do with the Homeopath; but has much to do with miasmatic layers of the remedy and the miasmatic layer of th e patient. Some patients are so deeply miasmatically rooted that their time on earth is too short to get rid of these miasms. that is why they cannot be cured and can only be palliated e.g. 1. An advanced case of multiple sclerosis. 2. An advanced case of malignancy. 3. An advanced case of chronic obstructive lung disease.

Whenever young Homeopathic physicians are exposed to patients of Category C, they start thinking that they do not know enough of Homeopathy or they come to the conclusion that Homeopathy does not work. This makes them jump into the abyss of other systems of medicine, like Allopathy, Acupuncture, Acupressure and what not. Unfortunately, these days we see more and more patients t hat belong to Category C and very few patients that belong to Category A and B. to effectively treat the patients, who belong to Category C, the Homeopath should have vast Knowledge of Medicine,Materia Medica, Repertory, Homeopathic Therapeutics, etc. Backed by this Knowledge, he has to look for the remedy, which is indicated at that moment of the consultation. If t here are several remedies indicated for the patient, then it is the duty of the physician to decide on only one out of them.

Judging the susceptibility This is best done after the second or third visit, when you will definitely know to which category the patient belongs.

High susceptibility These are the patients wh ose immune system is very strong. They have a lot of peculiar, queer and rare physical symptoms and good mental symptoms. the totality of the case will indicate not more than two remedies. If they are given the appropriate remedy, they will make significant inroads into health. Sometimes a second remedy is needed which can b e found very easily-that which is complementary to the previous one. These patients will send hundreds of new patients to you and make you famous with their stories of the miracle that happened to them with Homeopathy.

Moderate susceptibility Here the immune system is moderate. the patient does give good general symptoms, mental symptoms, desires, aversions ect. There or four miasmatic cover the defence mechanism of the patient. Here you have to tart w ith the remedy that will remove the upper layer, then the second layer, ect. Thus, after a long time of correct treatment with Homeopathy, their level of health will improve.

Poor susceptibility These patients to not have significant mental or physical symptoms. their history is strewn with incomplete particular symptoms. Their immune system is very weak. To remove one complaint it requires the help of five or six remedies at different times. Indeed they never get well totally. We have to be honest to these patients that they cannot expect cure, only palliation.

Layers of miasms Dr. George Vithoulkas presented the theory of layers of disease. He has made the complex topic of miasms easier to understand when he says, "It is possible that a patient is loaded with two, three or four miasmatic predisposing layers of disease". Sometimes, therefore, several remedies may be needed for every layer disease to get at this predisposing layer, so t hat the patient can climb to a better state of health. Usually such patients fall into Category C. Some of them will cured of all their miasmatic layers after a longer period of time and will also become mentally/emotionally healthy. Others will be cured of their superficial layers of miasms, while their deeper mental emotional disturbances remain. Once a patient came to me for consultation for recurrent Apthous stomatitis. From the disease history we learnt that he used to suffer from migraine and sciatica. The mouth complaints disappeared after administrating 3-4 well chosen remedies over a period of on year. Then, the patient had relapse of migraine. He was treated with well-chosen remedies for this episode for 6 months. The migraine disappeared but sciatica returned. Again, some well-chosen remedies kept the sciatica trouble under control and made it disappear after some months.

Ideal cure In order to fully understand this judgement criterion in Homeopathy and to apply it daily in practice, the book "The Science Of Homeopathy "by George Vithoulkas requires reading. We can say an ideal cure is achieved when th e patient is growing to a higher, when Homeopathic treatment makes the patient have less complaints and be more creative on the mental, and physical levels. This evolution can happen progressively, but usually occurs in smaller or greater leaps. Patients in Category A can make w ith one well-chosen remedy. Patient in Category B makes smaller leaps and that in Category C makes virtually no leaps at all. The stronger the defence mechanism of t he organism, the clearer that organism will produce the disease picture. After giving the appropriate remedy in an acute case, one should see a change of symptoms within few minutes to few hours, e. g., in a case of dymenorrhoea the pain should subside within half an hour. In case of chronic disease, however the general feeling of well being and the intensity of symptoms takes a few weeks to show up and may be after a few months the patient starts feeling better emotionally, has a positive attitude towards life and is more creative in his approach.

Potency choice Kinds of Potencies The decimal dilutions are indicated with D (decimal) or X (Roman number 10) e.g. D6, D12. 24 X. The centesimal dilutions are indicated with C (centesimal) e.g. C30, 200 C. When we about a potency of 30 or higher we mean 3C potencies. The most used C potencies are 30, 200, 1000 (1M), 10,000 (10M), 50,000 (50M) and 100,000 (CM). The 50 - millesimal potencies are indicated with LM. E.g. 6LM, 12 lm. Upto the dilution of 30, the potentisation method of Hahnemann is used. This type of dilution is indicated with CH. E.g. 12CH, 30CH. From 30 on wards the Korsakov method is used ( mechanical). This king of delusion is indicated with CK or just k for 200 potencies or higher. E. g. 200 ck, MCK or 200K, MK. Potencies below 12C or 24 d (24X) are material dilutions where some substance of th e original product is still present Higher potencies do not contain any molecule of th e original product, so they are purely dynamic. The commonly used potencies in my practice are 30C, 200K,MK, 10MK, 50MK and exceptionally CMK.

potencies: General Rules. When the remedy is correct, it will mostly work whatever the potency. How long the remedy will work depends on the potency. The higher the potency, the deeper and longer the remedy will work, in a chronic case. A low potency works at the physical level but not quickly at the psychological or mental level. A High potency easily acts on the mental as well as the physical level. That s why the choice of the potency should relate to the depth of the disease. Additionally, the vitality of the organism and the sensitiveness of the patient play their parts too. As a guideline, the following scheme is easy: A). Pure physical problems (e.g. neurosis) :prefer a 200K potency. B). Pure psychological problems (e.g. psychosis) :prefer a 10MK potency. Advice for all the potencies If a remedy in certain potency worked well, always repeat the same potency before increasing. If you have given the same potency twice without amelioration, you can go one degree higher, i.e. , the potency that next higher ( do note change from 30 to IM, but to 200). If a well acting drug has been antidoted by allopathic drug, wrong homeopathic treatment, coffee, mint, etc., repeat the

same potency.

If there is a quick relapse, repeat the same potency, but suspect dangerous or incurable disease like Ishaemic Heart disease, Brain tumour, etc. If a patient s complaints relapse after a long time, you can use the same potency. If that does not help, go a higher potency. If you are not sure that there was an antidote, repeat the same potency. Advice for second prescription a) If the first remedy worked perfectly and you get a clear picture of a complementary remedy, but t he problem is more peripheral, a lower potency. E.g. After Calc carb. 10. M the patient is generally better but he get a peripheral Rhus-Tox complaint give Rhus-Tox 200 or 30. b) If the first remedy did not work and we see a very clear alternative remedy, give a higher potency. (Dr. Vassilis gh egas in Greece follows this). E.g. Sulphur 1 M did not work, clearly Pulsatilla appears afterwards, give 10 M. c) If you have given two or three remedies without result and are not sure of the remedy, you ought to give a low potency. (Do not stimulate the organism more than necessary). d) If a remedy has worked only superficially and a new remedy appears, give a lower or the same potency. The superficial remedy has opened the way to the next remedy. e) If after 3 years of superficial treatment with good results, suddenly a clear deep-acting remedy appears, you may give this in a higher potency.

The potency that I give depends on the following factors: a) The kind of disease and the depth of the disease ( mental, emotional or physical ). b) The strength of the organism and its energy condition ( in old, weak and exhausted people, you should start with low potency; in a severe heart affection where ejection is low due to organic damage to heart ? start low ). Be careful with the potency of certain remedies. E.g. Lachesis in skin problem-give a low potency. Nosodes in heart problems or low blood pressure: Give a low potency ( maximum 30 or 200). h. Heavy remedies in serious psychological conditions where patient is on heavy allopathic medication give a low potency preferably. E.g. Aurum, Gelsimium, Hellerus, Muriatic acid, Phosphoric acid, Plumbum. I. In acute situations, certain remedies should be given in higher potencies. E.g. Aconite, Arnica, Belladonna, Bryonia, Ignatia. J. If patient is seriously, acutely ill and a clear picture of a drug appears, give a higher potency if t he organism is strong. E.g. A patient who has been previously treated homoeopathically with success. If the organism is weak give a low potency. When to I use 200K? This is the most common potency to start with at the first interview. If the Homeopathic picture is not so clear, you should certainly note give higher.

New Homeopaths should not give higher potencies. With heavy remedies, you better not prescribe higher than 200. E.g. Alumina, Muriatic acid, Phosphoric acid, Plumbum, Stannum,Zincum etc. If you start with 200, you will have all the higher potencies as reserve for the future. If you have give several remedies without result, Stick to the 200 potency for the next remedy and do not go higher. If you hat a good reaction with twice and the third time there is no reaction, you can give 10 M ( one degree higher). If this does noes not have effect, you ought to try 200 before leaving this remedy ( never change a remedy too quickly when it has worked). In acute diseases, you have to start with 22. In acute diseases in children with a very clear picture, you may give 1 M. if necessary. Only in an acute case of Arnica or Aconite should you give a higher potency. of Homeopathy in Greece prefer to give certain remedies in certain potencies only rather th an sticking to a general rule ). L. When do I use 1M? In case of a first prescription in a strong individual with a very clear picture. In case of a first prescription in children wh en the picture is very clear. In emotional or psychological problems, e.g. situations where Staphysagria or Ignatia are, indicated. In the patient has been on Allopathic medication for a long time.
