Study in Canada

Why Study In Canada Canadians place great importance on learning, and have developed a first-rate education system with high standards. The country spends more on education (as a percentage of GDP) compared to the OECD average, and is the second highest among G-8 countries.

Canada Study & Living Study in Canada Understanding the education system Academic Calendar Application Procedure Main exams Documents required Fee & Expenses Financial Assistance Visa Information

A Safe Place To Study Canada has the lowest crime and violence rates in the region making it a safe place for international students to study and live. Unlike its US neighbours to the south, firearms are strictly controlled and generally are not permitted. Best Places in the World to Live Canada has ranked as one of the top ten places to live in the world since 1994 according to the United Nations (UN) and the Economist Intelligence Unit. In the UN survey Canada earned particularly high marks for its access to education, high life expectancy (due to universal health care system); and low crime and violence rates. In addition, Canada’s largest cities — Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal — have been recognized as world class cities in which to live and work, for their cleanliness and safety and for their cultural activities and attractive lifestyles. Low cost of Studying Canada offers the lowest tuition rates for foreign students compared to the U.K., Australia, New Zealand and the US. Rates at U.S. public universities were almost 1/3 higher than fees for Bachelor‘s degrees in Canada, while U.S. private university fees were more than double.

The average cost for a foreign student for one school year (8 months) in an undergraduate program is C$11,903. High Tech Destination Canada provides a stimulating environment to do business and to learn due to the contributions of many talented scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs. The country is an international leader in computer and information technologies and has a reputation for excellence in such sectors as telecommunications, transportation and engineering; and specifically, aerospace, urban transport, microelectronics, medical devices, advanced software, hydroelectric and nuclear power, lasers and opto-electronics, biotechnology, food and beverage processing, geomatics; and ocean and environmental industries.

Understanding the education system School Education Private Schools Private schools exist in every province and provide an attractive alternative for families seeking an overseas education for their children. All private schools must be registered with the Ministry of Education in their province or territory, and must meet the curriculum and other standards set by their respective ministries. Families can choose schools that are boys-only, girls-only or coeducational. Some private schools offer full boarding programs, others are day schools, and many offer both. Many private schools adhere to a particular religious faith, emphasize particular moral teachings and apply rigorous academic standards. Public Schools Many Canadian public schools are now accepting international students into their programs. Publicly-funded schools are managed at the local level by elected school boards. Almost all public schools are co-educational and offer day programs only. Many school boards offer secular or non-religious education while others have religious affiliations. However, this varies from province to province. Policies on accepting international students and the fees charged vary from district to district. Career Colleges Career College are privately owned institutions that offer diploma and certificate training programs with the main objective of preparing students for the job market after a short period of instruction.

Colleges and Technical Institutions Colleges and Technical Institutions are popular education choices in Canada. They offer professional programs of 1 to 3 years (often including a work term) that are highly applicable in the job market. University Colleges University Colleges combine Canadian university and college traditions, with a strong base of applied and academic programs offered in campus environments.A university college offers university degrees as well as college diploma and certificate programs. Students can expect to find a wide range of program choices at university colleges. As a component of the Canadian university system, university colleges offer students a choice of either academically-oriented university degree programs or the more practically-oriented college diplomas and certificates. As part of the Canadian college system, university colleges are distinguished by their strong student support services, small classes and strong campus environments. They also may offer combined degree/diploma programs and university transfer programs. Universities Universities are internationally known for the quality of teaching and research. Degrees from Canadian universities are considered to be equivalent to those from American and other Commonwealth universities. Canadian universities are largely publicly funded; as a result they are of a consistently high quality, regardless of location or area of study. As well, they all retain a high degree of academic autonomy. They offer a broad range of courses and a full range of degrees from undergraduate to doctorates, and can also offer certificates and professional degrees. Fees for universities differ depending on the province, institution and program of study.

Academic Calendar The university year in Canada usually runs from September to May. Some universities are on a semester system, the fall semester (Sept-Dec), and the winter semester (Jan-May), or trimester system, with all courses available even in the summer beginning May.

Documents required For Undergraduate Study Students who are applying for a Bachelor program or another undergraduate course would be required to submit a secondary school report and transcripts of the qualifying exams. The form should be filled out by a school authority like the principal or a headmaster. This form should indicate your whole school experience in relation to the other students in your class to help admission committees judge your performance in your own educational system. The school report should talk about your accomplishments during the school tenure.

Super Student Monthly

Due to variation in the styles of scoring ask your school to attach a guide to the grading standards used in your educational system and your school. Also the ranking system used in your school should be clearly highlighted. Transcripts should be translated by the issuing authority into English for those issued in a language other than English otherwise it may not be accepted by the University. For More info click: 1 Statement of Purpose The Statement of Purpose is the single most important part of the application form, that will introduce the applicant to the admissions committee. It will also give a brief of the applicant‘s current career path and professional interests and goals for the future. For More info click: www.statementofpurpose.com/ Letter of Recommendation One of the most important elements of your college application is the Letter of recommendation. It is a signed statement from preferably a teacher who knows you well and has taught you in a subject that is related to the course you are applying to. The letter should list your positive and negative qualities, useful skills (e.g., computer, statistical, or interpersonal skills), related experiences (extracurricular, work experience, clubs, volunteer work), information about the student that can portray a true picture of the candidate to the reader. A good letter might also provide information about the student‘s development and achievements over time. Therefore you need to choose a teacher who knows you well to write your letter. Graduate Study Transcripts reflecting your past academic record such as your of undergraduate studies and school record are the most important deciding factors in securing admission to a college abroad. Most schools require you to have a good academic record especially for programs and courses offering a master‘s or doctoral degree. Each university has its own minimum requirement for its programs, which are flexible depending on the candidate‘s profile and the course applied for.

Each Universities in Canada have their own marking and evaluation systems.Do not convert your marks one one education system to the Canadian Grade Point Average system since the conversion may not be accurate. You must attach guide from your college to indicate the scoring system in your class and/or university. The letter may also indicate your place as compared to the class and the university average and the number of students in the class and the number of colleges and students in the university. Students applying for Graduate courses (MBA, MS etc) are required to submit an official transcript (mark-sheets) from each college or university that they have attended after secondary school with complete details of the subjects/credits involved (for each year) and other details like correspondence courses, diplomas etc. Most universities ask for the transcript (mark-sheets) to be sealed in an envelope and signed and attested across the seal by the registrar. This procedure is to be done for each and every college that you have attended. Some universities may ask for more than one copy of the transcript. If the transcripts are in a language other than English, then they must be translated into English only by the issuing authority or university otherwise it may not be accepted.

Fee & Expenses Student Employment You may work on campus at the institution where you study without a work permit, if you are a full-time student at a publicly-funded post-secondary institution or a private institution authorized by provincial statute to confer degrees. Biographies... of Ancient Indian Scientists ARYABHATT (476 CE)

MASTER ASTRONOMER AND MATHEMATICIAN Born in 476 CE in Kusumpur ( Bihar ), Aryabhatt’s intellectual brilliance remapped the boundaries of mathematics and astronomy. In 499 CE, at the age of 23, he wrote a text on astronomy and an unparallel treatise on

mathematics called “Aryabhatiyam.” He formulated the process of calculating the motion of planets and the time of eclipses. Aryabhatt was the first to proclaim that the earth is round, it rotates on its axis, orbits the sun and is suspended in space - 1000 years before Copernicus published his heliocentric theory. He is also acknowledged for calculating p (Pi) to four decimal places: 3.1416 and the sine table in trigonometry. Centuries later, in 825 CE, the Arab mathematician, Mohammed Ibna Musa credited the value of Pi to the Indians, “This value has been given by the Hindus.” And above all, his most spectacular contribution was the concept of zero without which modern computer technology would have been non-existent. Aryabhatt was a colossus in the field of mathematics. August -2013

Washington, July 26 : Closure of another bogus American university has left hundreds of students, many of them from India’s Andhra Pradesh state, scrambling for options for continuing their studies. The University of Northern Virginia was ordered to cease operations and close immediately July 16, after the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia revoked the college’s license to operate. UNVA operated on the ground floor of an office building in Annandale, a Washington suburb in neighbouring Virginia, for 15 years, according to the Washington Post. It remained unaccredited for the last five years and failed four audits by the state for not hiring “qualified faculty.” The council said once it has received the student academic and financial records from the university it would communicate with students “regarding the impact of revocation and currently enrolled students’ options for continuing education.” Students who are in the US on FI visas were also advised to make inquiries regarding immigration, Optional Practical Training (OPT) and the SEVP/ SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Programme and Information System) from the US Department of Homeland Security at (202) 282 -8000 or via its website at www.dhs.gov. In a 2011 raid on UNVA federal officials found, almost exclusively enrolled foreign students from India whom the college had helped obtain visas by exploiting loopholes, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. The next month, UNVA’s chancellor David Lee resigned following separate reports of his kinky personal life. Lee had advertised his private basement sex dungeon on a BDSM website, saying he was seeking “attractive

submissive” women, according to The Smoking Gun, which posted photos from Lee’s profile on the site on Aug 1, 2011. Many Indian students had transferred to UNVA from Tri-Valley University, another bogus university in California, that was shut down by immigration authorities in 2011 for alleged visa fraud.

DU begins session with new fouryear programme New Delhi, July 25 : Delhi University (DU) Thursday opened its gates to the first batch of students of the four-year undergraduate programme, welcoming them with cultural shows, refreshments and a promise of no ragging. Dressed in the trendiest of attires, the freshers were obviously excited as they embarked on a new chapter of their lives. “I am very excited to be a part of the prestigious DU. Being the first day, I had to be in my best attire because, as they say, the first impression is the last impression,” said a chirpy Ankita Mahajan, who had gone for a retro look, sporting palazzo pants and a polka dot shirt. Nikhil Cherian, a student of Hans Raj College, dressed in shorts and a printed t-shirt, sported a casual look. “The weather is humid and you should wear what is comfortable. Till winter arrives, my wardrobe is not going to change,” he said. While some colleges which had finished orientation programmes earlier began with classes Thursday, others kept the first day informal, and sought to make the newcomers comfortable. August -2013

There were dance and theatre performances by cultural societies in some colleges and interactive sessions, where alumni shared their experiences with the newcomers. Meanwhile, the political student outfits too went all out to woo students as they spread across the campus meeting new students, trying to impress upon them the need to join them. The issue of ragging remained on the top of everyone’s mind, with student outfits putting up colourful posters all over the campus promising “no-ragging.” “There is an anti-ragging campaign in place in all the colleges of north and south campus. If anyone is ragged, he or she can come to us and we will make sure that the guilty are taken to task. No cases of ragging were reported today,” Varun Khari, vice president of Delhi University Students Union, told Press. “We have also started self-defence classes for the girls,” he said. Meanwhile, there was heavy deployment of police personnel across the campus to prevent ragging. The students were excited about the new undergraduate course too. “I feel DU has made the graduation programme more comprehensive and we now know about all the subjects. It will help our prospects of getting employed,” said Nishant Singh, a student of the arts and humanities subjects at St. Stephen’s College. Some teachers too agreed. “This is a very productive programme, and students shouldn’t worry. This will enhance their understanding,” Rajinder Kumar, a Sanskrit teacher at Hindu College said. Indian universities should focus on research: Tharoor New Delhi, July 25 : Indian universities need to focus on research as building up research and development (R&D) is one way India can maximise its economic potential, union Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD) Shashi Tharoor said Thursday. Speaking at the two-day Global R&D Summit here on the opening day, Tharoor called for increasing collaboration between industry and academia in this regard. Observing that no Indian university figures among the list of top 200 universities of the world, Tharoor said: “When we looked into the rating system, we found that 30 percent weightage while ranking universities globally was given to research and another 30 percent was given to citations.” “Our universities are primarily teaching institutions and we need to change it. Indian universities need to focus more on research.” The minister said his ministry has been focusing on putting more money into research and development and private players must also pitch in. He said the Universities for Research and Innovation Bill 2012 — aimed at creating research institutions — is pending before parliament. “R&D as prime driver of the economic growth cannot be overlooked. Happiness peaks in 20s and 60s New York, July 25 : People are happiest around age 23 and then again around age 69, a new study has revealed. Study author Hannes Schwandt, a research associate at Princeton University told the New York Daily News that for most, life hits a slump during the mid-50s, likely because that’s when people experience the most regret. Schwandt said that young people strongly overestimate their future, they’re overoptimistic and they think that they will be the ones who don’t get divorced, who have money and nice jobs and healthy children. The author warns that optimism translates to happiness, but can lead to misery if dreams aren’t fulfilled. This might explain why well-being hits a low a couple decades later. The study data comes from more than 23,000 surveys that were conducted in Germany, among participants between ages 17 and 85. The respondents were asked how satisfied they were with their current life, and how they expected to feel about life in five years.Schwandt said that the reason for the late-age boost in happiness could be because people have come to peace with lost opportunities. The research was published this month by the London School of Economics and Political Science at the Centre for Economic Performance.

Parental divorce during childhood linked to spending habits Washington, July 24 : Parental divorce could be one of the factors that contribute to compulsive buying behaviour in adulthood, a new study has suggested. Author George P. Moschis said that when kids grow up in a disruptive environment for instance, if their parents divorced, they were born out of marriage or they did not get sufficient affection and attention from their parents - they try looking for satisfaction outside their home. Moschis told the Huffington Post that there is a kind of insecurity and self esteem’s impairment that could make some kind of need for feeling better about oneself. He said those things that people buy make them feel good about, which kind of eases adverse feelings and that eventually becomes compulsive buying. Moschis and his co-researchers asked 327 undergraduate students at two universities to fill out questionnaires about their spending habits and family history. The findings have been published in the Journal of Consumer Affairs. August -2013
