Why study in Sweden? for its creativity, cutting-edge research and independent thinking. Technologically advanced and bold enough to experiment with new concepts and ideas, Sweden is regarded as a nation of early adopters and trend setters. But it is not only in technology that Sweden excels. Swedish campuses are among the most progressive worldwide, with an emphasis on equality, democracy and cultural awareness. There is a modern approach to learning, where student-teacher relations are informal and easygoing. Professors are on a first-name basis with students and often accessible outside lecture hours. You have the ability to influence your own studies, and your ideas and opinions count. High standards are guaranteed: Swedish universities have a reputation for rigorous quality control, with nationally certified degrees. Sweden has one of the most ambitious educational evaluation programs in Europe aimed at maintaining this competitive edge globally. Theory is easily turned into practice: Cooperation between academia and industry forms an integral part of many Swedish master’s degree programs, giving you a distinct advantage over your peers when entering the job market. You’re in good company: Sweden attracts more and more international students, and universities have extensive experience in dealing with the specific needs of foreign students. International offices strive to make your stay as rewarding as possible, from the moment your application is accepted. English is Swedes’ second language: English is widely spoken and understood by Swedes. Swedish universities offer 500 master’s degree programs taught in English aimed at international students. For more information, see www.studyinsweden.se. SWEDEN IS KNOWN

The world’s top democracy The Economist Intelligence Unit report ranks Sweden in first place among 167 countries. Sweden scored 9.88 out of 10 from 60 indicators spread across the following areas: electoral process, functioning of government, political participation, political culture and civil liberties. (EIU, 2006)

Sweden provides students with a global perspective, and opens the door to career possibilities in many fields of study. Swedish universities aim to produce independant thinkers who like to take the initiative and who work well in a team. These are highly sought-after qualities in business and industry. In Sweden, master’s degree programs often combine theory with practice. Close ties between universities and industry gives you invaluable experience in your chosen field. Not only will you enter the job market armed with a desirable qualification, you’ll be able to back it up with proven knowledge and understanding. The selection of master’s degree programs in English continues to grow, with universities adapting their programs to global demand.

HIGHER EDUCATION IN

Aiko Fallas Yamashita, Costa Rica, Software Engineering and Management Master’s program, IT University of Göteborg

“ 2

I came to Sweden because of the nature of the master’s program, the high standard of English among Swedes and the reputation Sweden has for being an evolved country in terms of equality. I made good contacts and people gave me the support I needed to pursue my career as a researcher.”

Choosing your career path Technology Master’s degree programs in technology are particularly widespread among Swedish institutions, with programs ranging from space technology and robotics to IT, computer science and microelectronics. Several universities focus solely on technology in cooperation with industry, for example the IT University of Göteborg and Wireless@KTH, a subsidiary of KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology. Natural sciences Sweden has long been at the forefront of research in natural sciences, a precedent set 300 years ago by Carl Linnaeus and Anders Celsius. Swedish university laboratories continue to excel, with noted success in the pharmaceutical arena. The biotechnology clusters in StockholmUppsala, Göteborg, and Malmö-Lund are considered to be three of the strongest in Europe.

Nima Dokoohaki, Iran, Master’s Programme in Software Engineering of Distributed Systems, KTH

Universities in Sweden have a very close relationship with industry. In our courses, there are always guest lecturers coming from Microsoft, or Sun Microsystems. You realize what will really happen when you work at Microsoft and how you should be prepared if you want to work there. When students come out of the university here, they are ready to go to work.”

Famous brands born in Sweden Ericsson, IKEA, Volvo, Saab, AstraZeneca, Electrolux, ABB, Atlas Copco and H&M.

Medicine Six institutions in Sweden have faculties of medicine: Göteborg University, Karolinska Institutet, Linköping University, Lund University, Umeå University and Uppsala University. Areas of interest range from public health and nutrition programs to pure research and commercial product development, with drug discoveries that have changed lives around the world. These include the local anesthetic Xylocain®, the stomach ulcer drug Losec®, new asthma treatments and the kidney dialysis machine. Business Swedish universities offer master’s degree programs in management, marketing, finance, economics, entrepreneurship and e-commerce. Many of these programs include work experience with large Swedish multinationals.

Thomas Ott, Germany, Joint European Master in Space Science and Technology, Luleå University of Technology

“ 4

We all joined the Space Master because of our passion for space. There is no other place in Europe where space is so close. Our lectures are supported by experts from all over Europe and the theory can be applied to real space projects. Moreover, we used the opportunity to get to know each other’s cultures. We studied intensively but we also made friends for life from all over the world.”

Law Given its history of neutrality, Sweden has a reputation as a nation of mediators. Building on this expertise, some master’s degree programs in Sweden offer multi-disciplinary academic programs combining law (international and European) with human rights, ethics, international relations, intellectual property rights and development studies. Design Swedish design has long been a mark of quality, from glassware and furniture to manufacturing. Swedish universities offer master’s degree programs in many areas of design, such as fashion and textiles, light and product design.

Nataliya Gumenyuk, Ukraine, Master’s Programme in Global Journalism, Örebro University

After studying in Sweden and getting a degree, I've got a better position at my office. Now I have a better job, more responsibility and a lot of job offers. As I work as a foreign news correspondent, every aspect I learned during the course is beneficial for my work. Moreover, the contacts and experience I gained are invaluable. After studying in Sweden, I also became very interested in academia and I am planning to go on with it.”

Master’s degree programs High up on the Human Development Index Among 177 countries and territories, the UN Human Development Index places Sweden in the top six in a comparative measure of life expectancy, education and living standards. (United Nations Development Programme: Human Development Report, 2007/2008)

learning environments and a well-funded commitment to quality education, Sweden provides a solid foundation on which to build your career. WITH ITS MODERN

Degree structure In line with the Bologna Process – the Europe-wide drive for harmonization in higher education – Swedish universities have switched to a new degree structure. There are two master’s degree qualifications available. The difference between the two is based on the length of the study program. – Degree of Master (One Year) – Degree of Master (Two Years) Sweden has also adopted the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), the European standard for study attainment and grading. Who can apply? In short, anyone who is qualified, regardless of age, sex or nationality, can apply for a master’s degree program. Cultural diversity is encouraged. Students who do not have a scholarship and require a visa to study in Sweden will need to show they have SEK 7,300 (about EUR 780) per month to cover living expenses during their stay. Certain conditions apply to all students: a good level of English is a prerequisite as are good academic grades – expect competition for places.

How and when to apply? ALL MASTER’S DEGREE

programs taught in English at Swedish universities are listed on www.studyinsweden.se. Each program has a unique application code. Make a note of the code for the program you’re interested in and go to www.studera.nu/english. Applications for master’s degree programs must be made through www.studera.nu. Applications are accepted from December 1; with a few exceptions, the deadline for applications is February 1. The academic year usually starts in late August or early September. For more information please see www.studyinsweden.se.

The world’s smallest gender gap In an evaluation of 128 global economies, Sweden is the most egalitarian nation when it comes to gender having closed over 80% of its gender gap. (World Economic Forum: The Global Gender Gap Report, 2007)

Samuel Awe, Nigeria, Master’s in Minerals and Metallurgical Engineering, Luleå University of Technology

The people here are committed to their work. The academic staff are ready to help you – and they are friendly. In Nigeria, meeting a professor is like meeting God. In Sweden you are allowed to share your own ideas. Even if the professor is the number one in that discipline, you can speak your mind.”

7

Bits and pieces of Sweden

Financial help fees for students studying at universities in Sweden with a few exceptions. Higher education is currently fully subsidized by the state, for both Swedish and foreign students. Should you want to top up your living allowance while in Sweden, it is good to know that non-EU citizens with a student visa can work for the duration of their studies. Scholarships are also available. The Swedish Institute, a public agency, administers over 500 scholarships annually to foreign students and researchers from around the world. Competition is high and recipients are chosen for their academic excellence. The Erasmus Mundus program, which is largely aimed at non-EU students, offers generous scholarships for selected courses at a number of Swedish universities. For more information on scholarships visit www.studyinsweden.se. THERE ARE NO TUITION

Hairuo Zhang, China, International and Comparative Law Programme, Uppsala University

“ 10

The seminars are my favorite part of studying in Sweden. In China, most of our classes are lectures and there is no student participation. Here, we are divided into groups to prepare for the seminars. Group discussions are very beneficial because they require us to learn how to cooperate with people who are from all over the world. This method also promotes the spirit of teamwork. And this is how law firms work in real life.”

Further information EXTENSIVE INFORMATION ABOUT higher education for international students is available on www.studyinsweden.se. Sweden.se, the country’s official gateway, is a rich source of information that provides a direct insight into contemporary Sweden in many different languages. These websites are managed by the Swedish Institute (SI), a public agency that promotes interest in Sweden abroad. SI seeks to establish cooperation and lasting relations with other countries through active communication and cultural, educational and scientific exchanges. The Swedish Institute produces a wide range of publications on many aspects of Swedish society. These can be obtained directly from Swedish embassies and consulates around the world or ordered through the Sweden Bookshop, www.swedenbookshop.se.
