QA/QC PROCEDURE FOR ENGINEERS & DRAFTSMEN
AECOM, Building Engineering Structural Department October, 2015
SMALL DRAFTING MISTAKES MAKES THE SITE WORK DIFFERENT
THIS PRESENTATION Highlight the necessity of structural design QA/QC measures in enhancing production and deliverable quality. I.
Outline the production team relation.

I. Outline the production team relation.
I. Production Team Relation A - RELATION BETWEEN DESIGNER AND CAD (AT DESIGN STAGE) •The Draftsman clean architectural drawing, print grid line drawing for engineer’s input, this should be called markup #1. •Engineer to draw column locations, sizes, etc. required in the markup and return back to the Draftsman. Supporting sketches from software model with a clear direction are accepted. •Engineer and Draftsman follow color coding checking procedure as in Appendix (A). •Same markup procedure should be followed for all G.A’s, Reinforcement and Foundation drawings. •Final markups should be scanned and saved on project folder.
B - RELATION BETWEEN DESIGNER/CHECKER AND CAD (AT REVIEW STAGE) •New markups to be provide including name of Designer/Checker and CAD. •Follow same procedure in item (#A). •Lead Engineer to ensure that final checking markups are scanned and saved on the project folder.
II. Outline the production team responsibilities.
Engineer:
Production Team Responsibilities
1) Transfer all design information in to markup, special case for complicated steel structure will be described in Appendix (D). 2) Follow the markups color coding checking described in Appendix (A). 3) Insure that final markups are scanned and saved on the project folder. 4) Prepare Markups reflecting a clear content and the main components in Appendix (B). 5) Cover all drawings review aspects including but not limited to title block, notes and general notes, legend, scale, implementation of AECOM’s standard drafting parameters in addition to above mentioned design information. 6) Multi discipline coordination, including Navisworks clash detection.
Production Team Responsibilities Lead Engineer: 1) Ensure that QA/QC procedures are followed throughout project life. 2) Ensure that final markups are scanned and saved on project folder. 3) Communicate with the engineer for changes/amendments to design and/or drawings. 4) Over review the design and drawings, assuring competency and completion vs. the scope of services.
the the any its
Production Team Responsibilities REVIT Technician: 1) Follow AECOM’s standard drafting procedure manual. 2) Follow markups color coding checking procedure as in Appendix (A). 3) Follow BIM QA/QC procedure as per BIM Plan ( sample is in Appendix (C)). 4) Self-check as per QA/QC procedure. 5) Cooperating with the project structural and CAD teams. 6) If in doubt ask the engineer.
Production Team Responsibilities Senior Technician/ Project Lead: 1) Maintaining Standards Across the project. 2) High Level checks of REVIT Technician’s Works (Standards, following QA/QC procedures etc.,) 3) Responsible for compiling, arranging and record the drawings in the approved directory per structural design drawings register. 4) Coordinating structural drawings with the other Project’s discipline drawings under the structural engineer’s guidance. 5) Follow AECOM’s standard drafting procedure manual. 6) Follow markups color coding checking procedure as in Appendix (A). 7) Follow BIM QA/QC procedure as per BIM Plan ( sample is in Appendix (C)). 8) Self-check as per QA/QC procedure. 9) Cooperating with the project structural and CAD teams.
Production Team Responsibilities Discipline REVIT Lead : 1) Leading overall structural drafting teams assigned for all projects, and provide technical support. 2) Overall continuous internal drafting monitoring and deliverables auditing, assuring standards compliance. 3) Maintain and update drafting standards, in coordination with the engineers. 4) Manage drafting resources assignments for all projects, highlight deficit once occur. 5) Monitor drafting resources performance; carry out drafting standard training induction for new hires, and other drafting related trainings for existing hires.

Example Markup
Appendix (B): Sketch Components 1. Project Name
3. Sketch Title
2. Building Name 4. Sketch Body • GA plan •Reinforcement plan •Section
5. Date & Signature
Advantages Sketches are solely owned by the originator Ease of understanding and implementation by draft man, specially once swapped. Is used in checking the drawings. Is used in calculation report. Easily referenced once engineer to hand over. Saves time, noting it can be used as a reference to check the drawings Vs. design input.
Drawings Checking Hints Grant review process its complete duration: More time + Focused Checking = more comments = better Quality
Check Everything: Structural design input “sketch”+drafting standards + architectural drawings +text clashes +title block + notes, legend + SCALE
Clear comments & markups: Easy incorporation+ Less queries= Time Save
Share your markups and consider the other engineers markups So many markups, consider phasing for clarity. Sign off the mark up drawings.
Appendix (C): BIM QA/QC Check list
Appendix (D): •Draftsman to clean architectural model and provide the number of cross sections requested by Engineer. •Engineer to provide markups for geometry to Draftsman (i.e. No. of Trusses, Trusses depth, No. of verticals and inclined members, bracing locations etc.) •Draftsman to draw the 3D structural geometry and print 3D and 2D plans and sections to Engineer. •Engineer provides the required comments on geometry as per the color coding checking procedure as in Appendix (A). •After geometry is corrected, Draftsman send the 3D model to the engineer for using it in design. •After the engineer complete the design and Checker reviewed the model, the model returned again to the Draftsman to incorporate it in the BIM model. •The Draftsman prints a new set of 3D and 2D markups and Sections for Engineer’s review. •Engineer to provide the required comments as per the color coding checking procedure as in Appendix (A). •Final markups should be scanned and saved on the project folder.
