STHAN BALA – A CONSIDERATION OF PLANETARY POTENCY

Sthan Bala is one of the most important considerations of planetary potency, as part of Shad Bala (six-fold sources of planetary strength) in a chart. An attempt is made to show the influence of Sthan Bala through a case study.

Sthan Bala comprises of the following considerations: 1.Uchch Bala (exaltation) 2.Varga Bala (Sapta Varga bala : strength accruing out of positions in Rasi, Hora, Dreshkan, Saptamsa, Navamsa, Dvadashamsa and Trimshamsa) 3.Ojhayugma Rasi Bala (acquired by placement in odd, or even Rasi and in odd, or even Navamsa) 4. Kendradi Bala (due to placement in Kona, or Panaphara, or Apoklima House), 5.Dreshkan Bala (due to placement in first, second, or third decanate of a Rasi). Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra: Ch. 27. STHAN BALA INDICATION PLANETARY POTENCY IN A HOROSCOPE

- Effects of a planet in the house is assessed by the residential strength of the house. - The effect is felt in the main or sub period of the planet. In the above case, the following effects were felt: - The Sun has the highest residential strength and sthana bal. During the Sun dasha the native prosecuted his higher studies in medicine. According to vedic astrology, Sun is the karak for medicines as mythology says that Sun god passed on the knowledge of medicine to Dhanwantari and his children, the Aswini twins are the physicians of the god. Further, Sun is the lord of IXth house, signifying higher studies. Sun is in Virgo (health care) along with Mercury (exalted) and Mars (surgery) also having sthana bal. - The Moon has the third highest residential strength. As Moon is in the IXth house (higher studes) and on the star of Magha, also an asterism indicating medical studies. Being lord of VIIIth, it shows research. Further VIIIth house shows research and operation theatres, aspected by Saturn. All these conditions indicate research and higher studies in orthopedic surgery. The native became one of the leading orthopedic surgeons during Moon dasha.
