Step by Step Installation and Configuration of Hyper-V

Microsoft Hyper-V is windows virtualization platform that provides a set of tools and services to create and manage virtualized computing environment. Hyper-V is available in two variant: 

Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 is a standalone, free product offered by Microsoft with command line user interface (CUI) to provide virtualized computing environment. To download free version of Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2, click -> http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/evalcenter/dn205299.aspx and login with your Microsoft account.



Hyper-V as installable role in Windows server 2008, Windows server 2008 R2, Windows server 2012, Windows server 2012 R2 and as optional feature in Windows 8 Pro 64-bit Edition, Windows 8 Enterprise 64-bit Edition, Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit Edition, Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit Edition & windows 8.1. (64-bit processor with Second Level Address Translation is required to install hyper-v on client operating systems.)

This guide is primarily focus on the installation and configuration of Hyper-V role on Windows server 2012 R2 platform.

Following are the high-level requirements to install hyper-v role:  

An x64-based processor Hardware-assisted virtualization (Intel VT or AMD-V)

Follow the below steps to install hyper-v role on Windows Server 2012 R2. 1. Login on the physical host with local administrator credential and open server manager, click on the “Add roles and features”.

2. On the Before you begin page, click Next.

3. On the Select installation type page, select Role-based or feature-based installation and then click Next.

4. On the Select destination server page, select a server from the server pool and then click Next.

5. On the Select server roles page, select Hyper-V

To add the tools to create and manage virtual machines, click Add Features. On the Features page, click Next

6. On Select features page , click Next.

7. On Hyper-V page, click Next.

8. On Create Virtual Switches page, Select Network adapters to create virtual switch or click Next and create virtual switch after installation of Hyper-V role.

9. On Virtual Machine Migration page, select appropriate option or leave it default and configure it after installation of Hyper-V role, if necessary.

10. On Default Stores page, specify the location store virtual disks and virtual machine configuration files and click Next.

11. On Confirm Installation Selections page, Select Restart the destination server automatically if required and click Install.

12. On Installation progress, click close after completion of installation and restart the host.

13. Open Hyper-V Manager, right click on host and click on hyper-v settings…

14. Click Virtual Hard Disks and specify the location to store virtual hard disks.

15. Click Virtual Machines, specify the location to store virtual machine configuration files and click Apply and OK.

16. To configure virtual network, click on Action menu and click on virtual switch manager….

17. Select the virtual switch type and click on Create Virtual Switch.

External switches are used to connect VMs to external network, host system and other VMs.

o

Internal switches are used to connect VMs to VMs and physical host only . Private switches are used to connect VM to other VMs on same physical host.

18. Enter name for virtual switch and specify the connection type and click Apply and OK.
